Choosing a garage door needn’t be painful, but as with any other home improvement project you should keep your wits about you and take all the advice that is available. In that spirit, I suggest you keep an eye on the following five secrets of choosing the right garage door.  Before Deciding consider some points in your mind about Garage doors.

Thinking about space

The space within your garage is a valuable asset. Land use costs in the Perth can get pretty steep, and Perth’s garage doors often waste more real estate than they need to. Be wary of garage doors that rob you of that space – it is usually not worth saving money on cheaper doors, if they will rob you of valuable cubic feet of usable space. Hinged doors opening inwards tend to take up more space inside. Let there be light

A second secret: you should be thinking about your garage door not just as a door, but as a window. If you’re ever going to work in your garage, you’ll really benefit from getting some natural light in there. ‘Badly installed garage doors can injure your children’. Yes, it sounds like I’m trying to scare you – but I’m afraid it’s true. I don’t know of anybody who has been injured by garage doors in Perth, but if the city has escaped so far, it’s only a matter of time. The risk is reduced enormously if you take sensible basic precautions. Employ a trustworthy, safety-conscious firm to install your garage door, and get them to explain what precautions they are taking. Demand that the doors meet appropriate safety standards. For instance, they must reverse if they hit an obstacle in their path – because that obstacle could be you.

Locks and keys

Garage doors need to be just as secure as every other entry point to your home. If you are installing a remote-controlled set of automatic garage doors, you need to be sure that the security mechanisms in the remote control are at least as reliable as the physical bolts protecting your front door. The security of electronic devices is an area where it is notoriously easy to be hoodwinked by impressive-sounding jargon, so I would advise you against trying to understand the ins and outs of the system yourself.

Success for your Garage Door

The success of your garage door installation project will depend not just on what you choose but, crucially, on whom you choose. Doing it all yourself isn’t a good decision unless you’re a skilled handyman with a lot of time on your hands. In the business of installing garage doors, experience counts for a lot, and getting your garage door installed by somebody with a lot of experience will save you from many of the errors people make first time round.

I doubt this will come as a shock to many people.  I for one was dubious about how long they would last when they started closing for lunch.

It seems that over the past few years Cardale just haven’t been able to get it right.  Although their marketing is great, the products aren’t.  When you compare them against the likes of Hormann and Novoferm they’re just not as good.  This would be ok if the price was rock bottom and they were marketing themselves as a budget door, but they’re not.  Also most fitters prefer to fit the German doors so tend to push them.  The only great product they did have, the Carteck door, they over priced then stopped importing  due to low sales figures.  Then they bought Henderson, another company with great marketing but poor doors.

No doubt Cardale will be bought as the company is just too big to fold but what then?  Will there be a massive injection of cash to overhaul the outdated retractable gear or the over complicated canopy gear?  By the way has anybody had the pleasure or replacing cables on a recent Caradle canopy?

Cardale should not be allowed to fold if not for any other reason than the redundancies, but if it is going to carry on then it needs huge changes in the business.  It needs to be transformed the way Hormann transformed Garador.

It’s not very often we ever hear from our customers again once we have supplied them with their new garage door or electric garage door opener.  It’s not because they don’t want to deal with us again it’s just that garage doors are not a regular purchase for most people!  No news is good news as far as we are concerned as it means our products have ‘done exactly what they say on the tin’.  I heard from a customer today who wanted to let us know that the door had done more than it said on the tin.

We supplied and fitted a Hormann sectional door to Mr Lillywhite last summer and he popped in to see us to let us know exactly how good his door was.  Unfortunately for Mr Lillywhite he had to learn this the hard way.  His water tank is at the back of his garage and he woke up one monrning to discover there was no pressure on his water supply when he used the bathroom tap. When he went into his garage to investigate he discovered a valve had leaked on the tank and filled the garage with 4 inches of water!

He said the weather-seal on the Hormann LPU 40 sectional door he had was so good it didn’t let a drop of what we calculate to be about 2500 litres of water out of the garage.  This is great news if you are trying to keep water out of your garage but could have not been such great news if the water level had risen any further.  Luckily it was doscovered in time.

The weather-seal is not guaranteed to be water tight by Hormann nor is it designed to be, and Mr Lillywhite did have an exceptionally level floor where the bottom edge seal was, but it’s nice to know how good these sectional doors really are.

The door was completely unaffected by the amount of water sitting behind it and the garage has ‘dried out nicely’ according to Mr Lillywhite!
