So, looking at the field, not only should today’s race offer up an exciting and competitive contest in its own right, but it could also provide some interesting clues with regard to both the Arc and some of the season’s other big races!

If you watched the above replay of last year’s running, you will have noticed the mare GIOFRA finishing a distant second behind Cirrus des Aigles. This probably won’t have filled you with too much confidence regarding her chances today, but there is nothing in this year’s field of the latter’s calibre (a truly top-class performer who ran the unbeatable Frankel to under 2 lengths in the Champion Stakes at Ascot last October!) and I think that, with a decent clip hopefully assured by the 2 pacemakers, the edge of fitness provided by her recent 3^rd in the Dubai Duty Free should see her account for her returning rivals, Pastorius, Saônois, and Ridasiyna. Each of these fine beasts put their names on the map last season with victories at the top level and, at the prices, Saônois looks worth an each-way saver. The glob-trotting Dunaden has two Group 1 wins to his name, but wasn’t at his best last season and will probably find today’s trip too short in any case.

There are also 2 Group 3s on today’s card, but I haven’t discerned any good betting angles available so will be watching simply as part of my continuing efforts to get a handle on the French form, as well as for the eternal pleasure of the equine spectacle. The Prix Vanteaux (13.30 GMT) can occasionally throw up a filly for the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) and the Prix de Barbeville (15.10) often features some of the best French stayers and is always worth a watch.

What a day yesterday! Trainer Willie Mullins swept all before him by saddling no less than 5 winners out of the 8 races on one of the most fiercely contested days in the Irish racing calendar: another truly incredible feat to add to an already dazzling season. Thankfully The Winning Post is a fully subscribed member of the Mullins fan club and so we too profited from the successes of Twinlight (8/1) and Quevega (6/4).  Special Tiara also gave us a nice each-way boost in the Ryanair after Benefficient failed to fire.

Today’s fare lacks the intrigue of yesterday, with small fields in the Grade 1s and a couple of hunters’ chases to beef out the card. The latter can certainly be compelling, as we saw at Cheltenham, but I don’t consider them a reliable betting medium. Hurricane Fly should take the Champion for Mullins as I’m not sure his most serious opposition, the gallant Rock On Ruby, will like the ground, especially after a tough campaign. I’m not going to tip a 2/7 shot though so today’s hopes rest with the trio below!

16.20 – Aon Novice Handicap Chase (Grade A)

(5yo+, 2m 5f, 14 runners)

SWEENEY TUNES has a similar profile to yesterday’s winner Twinlight: lightly raced top-weight, proven at graded level, and with a liking for the ground. He’s really come alive as a chaser and has been a model of consistency this season. The danger is that this may be a race too far, but at 13/2 I’m willing to take that chance.

TIP: SWEENEY TUNES – 1pt E-W at 13/2.

16.55 – Breakfast With Hector On 2FM Handicap Chase (0-145)

(5yo+, 3m 6f, 19 runners)

I almost feel like I’m tipping the same horse as in the 16.20 here as PANTHER CLAW’s profile and price are much the same as those of Sweeney Tunes. He looks a dour stayer and should be sticking to the task when others have cried enough in today’s testing conditions. Novarov is new to these jumps, but looked smart on his chase debut and could make a place at 10/1.

18.40 – Star Best For Racing Coverage Novice Hurdle

(5yo+, 2m, 10 runners)

Un de sceaux could be anything after his facile maiden victory, but the market does exaggerate the chances of the Mullins horses (I think we know why!) and has hopefully left us with some good place options here, especially as the second and third favourites don’t seem the most reliable. I’m hoping COPS AND ROBBERS can continue the improvement he showed last time out behind Pique Sous, when he easily accounted for some fancied rivals, and keep up the good form of the Gigginstown runners.

Quevega – The Mighty Mare

There have already been two fine days of top-class jumping action at Punchestown in Kildare and we’ve still got three to go! I’ll be back with more tips before the Festival draws to a close and will have a review of the full five days up before long, but for now all attention rests on today’s typically competitive contests. Though I don’t believe every race to be worth an interest, I’ve lined up a likely trio that will hopefully get the blog off to a Winning start!

TIPS AND ANALYSIS:

16.15 – Bibby Financial Services Handicap Chase

(4yo+, 2m, 16 runners)

As the ratings suggest, TWINLIGHT is a cut above these handicappers. The heavy ground holds no fear for this proven Graded performer who has won over course and distance and whose connections need no introduction. At 6/1, an Each-Way punt should secure a return.

TIP: TWINLIGHT – 2pts E-W at 6/1.

17.30 – Ladbrokes World Series Hurdle (Grade 1)

(4yo+, 3m, 7 runners)

A cracking race in prospect here, with two giants of the staying hurdle division, Quevega and Solwhit, facing up to the talented but somewhat enigmatic Rêve de Sivola and the up-and-coming young Cheltenham scorer Holywell. The latter pair will put up a real fight, but I think the finish will be played out between the seasoned superstars. Both have impeccable form over track, trip, and on this heavy ground, but the fact that Solwhit has had less than three weeks to get over his latest win at Aintree (impressive though it was!) tips the scales slightly in favour of the lightly-raced Champion QUEVEGA.

TIP: QUEVEGA – 2pts WIN at 7/4.

18.40 – Ryanair Novice Chase (Grade 1)

(5yo+, 2m, Class 1, 9 runners)

As the market suggests, this is a hot novice chase, with only the bottom weight really out of it. However, BENEFFICIENT was mightily impressive at Cheltenham and gave a typical battling performance to convincingly beat the highly touted Dynaste and seems to really be flourishing over fences. Bryan Cooper knows where the winning post is (and what about the Winning Post?!) and won’t give an inch to his rivals. Improving Aintree scorer Special Tiara is very backable at 8/1 E-W.

TIP: BENEFFICIENT – 1pt WIN at 4/1.
