My buddy AbedNego just reminded me today that it’s time to start compiling my top tunes of the year.  This is serious bizness folks.  Last year I compiled pages of post it notes and made an excel chart… no joke (I should also tell you though that I had a job and was finding ways to do anything except what I was supposed to be doing while at work, hence the elaborate unnecessary methods LOL).  This year might be a little easier but prolly not as focused as last years as I was no longer sitting at a desk for 8 plus hours listening to mixes for hours on end and making lists of tunes I liked for the latter half of the year.  Still, even I’m curious to see what I end up with.

Can’t believe it’s under two weeks to Christmas – so to get in the Xmas mood on Press Selection, I’ve decided that taking the Scrooge approach and ignoring any music with a Christmas reference in it will be my way of contributing to ‘keeping it Xmas’ this year.

I’m back with another installment in the wonderful miniseries, ‘History of Hospital Mix’.
Tonight, I bring you without further adieu, Hospital Mix Six. Ladies and gentlemen, this is by far, one of the sickest mixes you’ll ever here. Mixed by Hospital’s very own Cyantific, this one, a more recent one than the others, comes at you nice and hard with some very familiar tunes.

Some of the highlights from this mix include anthems from High Contrast’s massive “Tough Guys Don’t Dance” LP, as well as a taste of Logistics and Danny Byrd. Tonight I’m going to begin a short series of uploads, dedicated to the infamous Hospital Records KILLER compilation albums known tentatively as ‘Hospital Mixes’. These albums have always been a beacon of clarity in the ever-changing DnB world, especially for me. Regardless of how I feel, or what sort of ish may be brewing in my life, I know I can always turn to Hospital Records to provide the sickest comp albums to ever hit the streets. Despite the grime and dirt folks, you can never turn the volume down with something as massive as liquid. <3

As I’m sure we’re all aware now, I’m in the midst of a massive DnB phase right now and the usual record company to take my money is Hospital Records. Well they have just released this gem featuring artists from, yes you guessed it, Russia. It’s one of those albums that makes you realize there is a lot more to this music than just variations on the amen break.

Ah Mistabishi, it has been way too long. Although this may be his last release on Hospital Records after his pseudo-DJing scandal at Bassment presents Hospitality at Bar Mango. Personally, I could care less whether he DJ’s live or not at a set. There is a certain tinge of authenticity that comes with live mixing, as long as the tunes are good and nobody can see, who will notice? Although this clearly wasn’t the case at Hospitality. He even released a previously unreleased track on breakbeat.co.uk

In any case, the two tracks featured on one of the latest Hospital releases are absolutely wonderful, with a hint of weird not previously featured on Hospital or any label for that matter. The first track is Matrix’s remix of ‘From Memory’ from the album Drop. It’s an eerie sounding, almost euphoric cut of the song. The male and female voices are capped in such a way that gives it a soulful feeling unmatched by anybody else. It’s quite an oddball of a song.

The second track is aptly called ‘I Feel LOL’ and rightly so. It’s a bouncy tune with a female synthesized type of voice. It features a seemingly teenage idea of love with quite a few curses that do indeed bring the LOL. It’s a neat little track, yet at about 3:30 into the tracker it goes through a bunch of speed changes and the last minute or two finishes out at at least 1/2 speed. It really could have been better without the slowdown.

In any case, it’s a must have for any collection.

here’s the actual flyer that got printed up for the secrecy night (d&b/dubstep in bristol), people seem to like this style of flyer so there will be quite a few designs going up like it. not my choice but clients seem to like it, luckily they’re spread out around the UK so you shouldn’t see too many in the same place which is good.

Hospital’s wunderkind has done it again. No not High Contrast the other one, Logistics. His new album Crash, Bang, Wallop! has just surfaced and it’s another cracker. Following on from the spacey and slighly experimental Reality Checkpoint this LP see’s Logistics firmly back in rave territory. Tracks such as Eastern Promises and Platinum are rife with anthemic vocals and big room breakdowns. Thirteen tracks with your hands in the air would get a little tiresome and a number of other sounds can be found in the record. With the grit and stomp of Murderation to the minimal sounds of When It Rains, It Pours all bases are covered with effortless skill. A testament to the drum and bass long player format and one of the years best.

It’s featured in Hospitals new compilation Sick Music which is definitely worth a listen. The accuratelly titled album has a nice mishmash of Hospitals veterans like London Elektricity, Cyantific and Total Science mixed with the likes of Apex, Randomer and B-complex. The result being another awesome showcase from Hospitals top beat surgeons which is best summarized as sick.

An absolutely storming tune by Drum & Bass heavyweight and one quarter of the Cambridge 4, Logistics, from his forthcoming album on Hospital Records. No release date set yet as far as I know, but I’ve heard through the grapevine that it’s sounding BIG and judging by this, I’m sure it will be.

The tune’s entitled ‘Warehouse’ and the drop is straight salt beef. Liven up your Sunday!

 Cataloguing is just part of the work the Collections Team does; amongst other things we are involved in improvements to our online catalogue, producing guides to our collections, encouraging new deposits and working with volunteers. However, cataloguing is an important aspect of our work.

 The Collections Team undertakes cataloguing work which benefits WYAS’s 5 offices (Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield). The team currently focuses on material from public sector organisations, such as council records, hospital records, and police records. At the moment, we are working on the archives of the West Riding County Council (1888-1974).

Our cataloguing work involves a number of stages –

With a large collection, initially we look to see whether parts of the collection have already been catalogued and then we will “box-list” all the uncatalogued records so we have an overview of what a collection contains. We might also do some tidying up - removing duplicates, blank pieces of paper etc – at this stage (part of what archivists call “appraisal”). We may also need to do further research into the history of the collection which could involve looking at not only the records themselves but books, websites, accession paperwork (the documentation which is completed when a collection is deposited) from which we can draw up detailed administrative histories and flow charts.

Once we know more about the collection and the way the records relate to each other we can decide how the records should be structured in the catalogue. If the records have already been listed in the past sometimes the Collections Team may need to also “retroconvert” old paper lists lists onto our cataloguing database. These lists often need to be restructured to make them easier to use and to conform with modern cataloguing standards.

Once the structure is decided records are organised in our cataloguing database and the records can be marked up in pencil with a collection reference number which matches the number it has been allocated in the catalogue. It may also be appropriate to repackage some or all of the collection, for example, by putting items in acid-free folders or removing rusty paper-clips.

As always drum and bass has been humming along with all kinds hot fire dropping, from the new Bop album to a recent killer Sub Focus Essential Mix. Among all this is a tasty new compilation from the ever reliable Hospital Records. Wittily titled Sick Music this compile ties together 2 CD’s of outstanding tracks and remixes from up and coming producers. Below I have included Different by MRSA to give you a taste. Different reminds me of Logistics circa Space Jam EP. It’s swirling keys and undulating b-line make give it that uplifiting trance n’ bass feel, minus the cheese. MRSA, defiantly one to watch.
