Blogging has become big, as well as very influential. It is used by all kinds of people, ranging from politicians, to actors, to geeks, to even to the school going kid next door. Inevitably, everyone of these people needs blog hosting.

We’re here to find out, which web host is the best for bloggers. The variety in the people writing blogs is only matched by the variety of their motivations to write blogs.

• Personal blogs
• Media Blogs
• Blogs by Subject: For example political blogs, fashion blogs, music blogs, movies blogs, books blogs etc.

In fact there is no end to the types of blogs that can exist. Many people use blogs to describe their daily lives, actors and politicians use it for publicity, technology geeks write reviews which are read by thousands of people. Regular people, who had earlier been just normal next door neighbors, have become over-night celebrities through their blogs and are earning millions. All this has made blogging very attractive to most people, especially those who have an inclination towards writing or sharing their views.

The most attractive benefit of writing a blog is that it can earn you money.

All this takes us to the next important question, which is, if someone wants to enjoy the benefits of blogging by hosting a website, then which web hosting service would be ideal.

If you take the services of a blog hosting services provider, it means that, the service provider will be hosting your blog on his/her server space. If you have decided to go for setting up your personal blog, then you would have to select the right blog hosting provider. Now, since blogging has the potential to develop into a well paying full time career, selecting the ideal provider is a critical decision.

Blog hosting providers can be divided into the following three types:-

• Exclusive blog hosting providers

Exclusive blog hosting providers and Web hosting providers offer free as well paid services. Before you sign up with a blog hosting service provider, you need to define your requirements related to blogging. You may want to have total control over your blog, by being able to completely customize it according to your preferences and requirements.

When you go shopping for a web hosting service provider, you will find that the free services have a lot of limitations, and only by signing up with paid services, you can expect to get satisfactory service. Here the free blog hosting service providers ensure better exposure compared to paid ones. This happens because they usually come on the top in most search engine results.

However this does not mean that you should blindly sign up with a free blog hosting service. Paid blog hosting has its own positive points. These are primarily to do with the fact that you the blogger will be incomplete control of the look and feel of your blog. But in order to do all this you should possess basic knowledge of HTML and other encoding methods.

It has been in the hosting services business since the year 1996. It is a reputed as a serious hosting company. You can view a complete Bluehost review and see what users have to say here.

Had a very bad experience in choosing the right hosting provider. My friend had asked me to setup hi

Had a very bad experience in choosing the right hosting provider. My friend had asked me to setup his already existing RoR app in some cheap hosting arena. I have had previous experience with hostmonster but not sure why i recommended hostmonster again to my friend. Have also used railsplayground.com, which was very good until they choose to move to cPanel from lxadmin.

Then came justhost.com which was similar in the lines of hostmonster.com but the support was excellent. They answered my queries before and after getting into it, in just about an hour (compared to hostmonster.com which is approx 24 hours). I had difficulties in setting up the rails app again in justhost.com and then had to cancel my account, with which they refunded my total amount.

Then came hostmonster.com, which is currently serving rails 2.3.3 and my app also needing rails 2.3.3 for some plugins and other stuff.

After creating the rails application through cPanel, did setup the database and uploaded the app files and started the rails application through the UI. I thought this would point my domain www.example.com to the rails app but didnt.

After some googling and support tickets to hostmonster (which of course they dont answer promptly and clearly), i did manage to solve the issue after one week of downtime out of which 2 days were transferring of domain.

Solution:
I had to remove all the code specific to rails 2.3.3 (which is ok as far the main app is concerned) and freeze rails 2.2.2. This was done because rails 2.3.3 has deprecated CGI use and hostmonster does not provide proper documentation on how to host the rails applicaton without this. Copied the .htacess, dispatch.rb, dispatch.cgi and dispatch.fcgi files to public folder of app generated from a rails application specific to version 2.2.2. This was it and my app is running successfull SANS some authentication module specific to rails 2.3.3.

I am really disappointed on how hostmonster.com is providing support and documentation for users to deploy ruby on rails app.

2 or 3 months ago I switched to Nearly Free Speech (NFS) hosting provider. It “had” some advantages like you pay as much as you use the system. For example, you pay per megabytes of traffic or per megabytes of storage you allocate on the system. This reduced the payments of my web sites significantly because I used to pay a static charge even if I use only 2 megabytes of the 750 MB storage provided to me by my old hosting. The other reason I switched to Nearly Free Speech was that their service is providing some technologies which allows me to do some experimental web pages and my old hosting lacks them.

However things have changed this month, NFS started charging for things they used to not charge and started charging more for other parts of the service. They even started to charge for support tickets! These new changes increased my balance nearly 100% (maybe more).

I can live without the experimental features you know… And NFS even lacks some fundamental features like providing email accounts (they only provide email forwards) which makes my old hosting provider again a shiny solution.

I should now reconsider the situation and maybe change my hosting again. Maybe NFS charges still a little less than other options but it doesn’t worth if it is only 2-3$. Doing a 100% price increase really got on my nerves.

What would it mean to your business if your website went down, or your email did not send or recei

What would it mean to your business if your website went down, or your email did not send or receive?

What would you do if you could not call anyone to find answers?

How would you fix the problem and get your crucial business lifeline back online?

I know it is cheaper to buy your domain and host your website offshore, but is the extra money saved initially, worth it eventually?

Once again, I am baffled by the cheaper is better attitude. For me personally, peace of mind and a smoothly running website and email, with 98% uptime are well and truly worth paying the extra couple of bucks a month.

IMPORTANT REASON 1

If your site and email mysteriously go down … who you gonna call? (Sorry for the pun). If you were calling an Australian hosting company, it is either a local or long distance call away, and yes while there is Skype, if you are really nervous you can jump in a car or on a plane and be there and back quickly and cheaply.

IMPORTANT REASON 2

Back up servicing! Do you fully understand how to run your server? If not, you need to be able to talk to someone in your time zone and localised to you to work out any kinks or make any changes, e.g. moving from a MYSQL database to a MSSQL database.

IMPORTANT REASON 3

Different programming languages require different server extensions, for example should you want to place flash onto your existing website, you may have to install a flash player into your server to make the changes work – locally this can be done in minutes and at little cost to you.

IMPORTANT REASON 4

In Australia we have a Code of Practice and legislation that other countries do not have to protect consumers from fraud or illegal activities, for example hosting pornographic material on the back end of your website.

IMPORTANT REASON 5

Support Australian business! This one is a no brainer; we are currently experiencing a huge shift in the economy and what better way to secure our position than by supporting home grown, Aussie companies that are committed to supporting localised business.

Above all else, it is important that you find a hosting provider that is prepared to go the extra mile for you, whereby if problems do occur they can action them immediately and not pass responsibilities off through international connectivity issues or communication confusion.

Bottom line – support the hosting providers that are supporting our business’ and our country’s future!

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie ….

Like most people, you, too, would want to have an online business. The thing is you can’t affo

Like most people, you, too, would want to have an online business. The thing is you can’t afford to pay for the web hosting services needed to get your site on the internet. It should please you to know that these days, there are cheap web hosting packages designed for the small and medium sized business owners.

With a cheap web host, you get to spend between $1.00 and $10.00 a month only. Then again, you may be interested to find out what kind of service can you get in return from this minimal payment.

Actually, most of the cheap web hosts that you can find on the internet are not legitimate companies. However, if you spend time researching the whole of the World Wide Web, you can be able to spot a good one that is not a burden to your pocket.

There are a few cheap web hosting service providers that you can rely on, so it’s important that you know the features that you need to look out for in order to find the one to host your site. A wrong decision can mean a lot of losses not just in terms of money, but also of data. Keep in mind that reconstructing your data can take a long time.

Reliability is a very important factor to consider when looking for a web host. While most cheap web hosts do not guarantee a very high uptime percentage, try to look for one that is able to make your site visible at least 99% of the time. If you want your online business to succeed, you must have a website that people will be able to upload 99% of the time.

A good customer support is also essential, so make sure that your web host is able to provide you with the necessary support 24/7. Live support is usually available in business web hosting packages, but there are cheap web hosts that may offer this feature, too. It shouldn’t hurt to look around; who knows you may just stumble on a gold mine?

Remember that the prices of the web hosting packages depend on several factors, among which are disk space and bandwidth. See to it, then, that your web host is able to offer you with no less than 5GB space. Many web hosts are able to provide you with unlimited disk space, but they usually require more investment.

It has been said, time and time again, that your web host is key to your success. Therefore, you need to think things carefully before deciding on a particular company to host your site. Review sites make great references when it comes to this thing. Here you can see not just a list of the top web hosting firms, but also a comparison of their features. Do spend some time, then, poring over the different review sites out there.

Another way you can check if a certain company is worth your bucks or not is to join forums that have techno experts as members. Join these groups and solicit the experts’ advice.

Although I have had no problems with down time, billing, or customer support – in fact they we

Although I have had no problems with down time, billing, or customer support – in fact they were all great – but 1&1’s lack of support for the newest “LAMP” versions, or any new languages at that, has become a hindrance for me. So I’m looking for a place that offers the newest versions of PHP and MySQL etc; as well as equal or better support, uptime & features.

Here are my requirements, and if they match yours hopefully this will be of some help to you – because this whole searching blindly thing is not QUITE as fun as a sandpaper and gasoline massage, but it’s close.

My Requirements:

PHP5, MySQL5, access to the php.ini file, .htaccess file, cronjobs, unlimited sites & domains, a bandwidth limit suitable for about 75 sites, a reasonable amount of space, room to grow, non-copy & paste support, good uptime, reasonable price & backup options.

I don’t quite need, want to spend the time configuring, or want to pay outrageous amounts for a dedicated server, but having the option to install my own languages (or not ever need to) would be nice.

Holy crap don’t waste your time with these:
FatCow
MediaTemple
DreamHost
and really stay away from GoDaddy – don’t even think about it. I’ve got about 10 horror stories from clients about them screwing people over on billing – and they aren’t exactly known for their features or support either.

Look the best:
Rackspace/Mosso/SliceHost
ThisWebHost

Have heard is good but have not looked into yet:
A Small Orange, AN Hosting,

Still wondering about:
HostGator

Here are the rundowns:

FatCow

I signed up with FatCow, despite the fact that their site design made it very difficult to take them seriously. They did have all of the features I needed, and then some though. Once I set up a few sites, the ultra-cheap price (88/year normally but if you sign up through live chat and say the landing page you came to says $46 they’ll give you that price – don’t remember the link sorry.) became apparent. On any database applications i ran, server response time was on average 5 seconds and at worst 10 seconds – there’s a good 50/50 mix of these horrible delays. And there are a bunch of times when the server just times out. But, if you are running a simple brochure style site the response times are great – on average 0.3 seconds. I went into their live chat tech support and the conversation went something like this:
Me: “I’m having slow response times on this and this” them: “it is fast here” me: “I’m checking on multiple networks, and even running some virtual tests – all of them are 9 seconds.” them: “It is speedy”. Knowing that it was really not I asked: “Is this just normal for FatCow?” this went back and forth for a bit more and then they pasted a VERY generic script into the chat window requesting me to email them, with 9 questions for me to answer that had absolutely nothing to do with my problem. I emailed them (with my issue, not the off-topic questions obviously), and they replied in a few hours saying that it is a shared server, and there is nothing they can do. I appreciated the honesty. So, 46 or 88 dollars (either is ultra cheap) gets you a decent static page website host for the whole year – not bad at all… but it’s not what I need.

ThisWebHost

I have not signed up with ThisWebHost but I emailed them with a few of my requirements and they had this to say:

1. Yes, you will have access to .htaccess, your own php.ini file and cronjobs from within Cpanel.
2. We are running Ver 5.0.67 of MySQL on our shared boxes. Apache, MySQL and PHP are updated immediately when vulnerabilities are discovered and patched.
3. Offsite backups would be restored manually, and it would take time for this process to occur.
4. We run a variety of OS’s on our shared servers.
5. We do not offer the ability to go over your bandwidth allowance. You will, however, receive multiple warnings at at least 75% capacity to inform you that you are nearing your bandwidth limit and need to take measures to increase this accordingly.
6. We support all typical web languages. If there’s a language you require that isn’t installed, we would investigate this on an individual basis.
7. Our MySQL server response is currently in milliseconds (less than 1 second). Given that PHP is usually used in conjunction with MySQL, it really depends on the code as to the response time of the site itself. Currently we have had no complaints of any “slow” sites, and have often been informed we are faster than the likes of MediaTemple, etc.

Numbers 3 and 5, are the things that kept me from signing up with them. I am however tempted to cancel FatCow, and sign up with them as a free option for my clients. If you only have a few sites to host that get moderate traffic (less than 100,000 views a month) – definitely look into them. Oh and, they also help pick up the slack that your web designer left and ACTUALLY help fix code errors for you. That’s pretty impressive for a hosting company to offer.

Mosso / Rackspace

I think my search is already over. I learned that you get what you pay for when it comes to hosting and decided to bite the bullet and sign on with Mosso (Rackspace is the parent company). It was between them and MediaTemple, but after hearing some awful things (similar to the server response times with FatCow + other problems with support), talking with both companies, and some colleagues – the decision was effortless – to the point that I am now a strong supporter & believer in this wonderful company. First off, they actually have INTELLIGENT COHERENT INTERESTED english speaking people on the line when you call or use their live chat. What??? I was pretty much convinced that this didn’t exist anymore. Honestly, that was just a dream list – but I think Mosso has it. Besides the stellar 24/7 support they: have all the new LAMP versions, access to all the files I need, suitable amount of bandwidth & space, room to grow & unlimited domains (they don’t even make an issue out of it – because it shouldn’t be). So all of this starts at $100 a month with their CloudSites package. Sadly, in order to get SSL it is $20 more a month. And if I ever want to install a Ruby on Rails or other type of application that isn’t supported in CloudSites I’ll have to start a “CloudServer” for $0.015 an hour. Since I’ve never expressed interest in learning RoR, this isn’t a huge problem to me – but even if I have, that is not that much to pay for a configurable server. ( here is a comparison of their CloudServer and Amazon’s EC2, couldn’t find one from an outside source, but I doubt they are lying about any of this ) I chose the CloudSites over managed hosting (a rackspace service) because I simply just don’t need it, and like getting some of the attributes of a rack without paying 500 a month.

I’ve been with the service a few days now, and I can still say that the support is beyond anything you would ever expect. The amount of CPU cycles that you get per month worried me, but after I looked into the (approximate) equivalent page views i would need in order exceed the limit, i’m not worried – and if I ever come close I can simply upgrade to the $250 a month plan and be covered for double. (at .01 a cpu cycle it would be much less – about $800 cheaper)

—————–

Update 5/12/2009: Two ones does not equal a right… If you ever try transferring ownership of a domain AWAY from 1&1, you can expect to do such fun things as: logging in to a separate web site, clicking on 3-5 confirmation links on the site and in separate emails, FAXing them your signature, then waiting 5 days for them to start the transfer. You also must tell them a secret that you’ve never told anyone before – mine was that I hate them.

Update 7/9/2009: Still managing to be impressed by rackspace/mosso. They have a blog site that keeps their users updated (and consequently creates an archive) about problems, a user forum, and their support is still leaps and bounds beyond any other host I’ve tried. I did run into a few packages I needed installed – but luckily I can quickly create a new server and set it up how I want. I’ll have to learn command line linux or hire someone to do this – but that’s just how it is.

Much has been written about the latest version of the Conficker virus to kick-off on April 1. However, the virus could kick-off prior to or after April 1. Case in point, the systems for the UK’s House of Commons was hit by the virus earlier this week.

Users spurn latest Adobe PDF patches, says researcher

While effort has made by end users and organizations to patch vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer, little progress has been made in patching vulnerabilities identified in Adobe Reader.

Adobe Reader, a free application used to read PDF documents, is pervasive in that it is found in the PC, MAC and Unix environments. While hackers have been taking advantage of the vulnerabilities for the last three months, only a small percentage of installed Adobe Readers have downloaded the needed patches.

Cisco patch bundle lances multiple DoS flaws

Security updates have been released to fix several flaws in its core IOS networking software. The updates, which would allow hackers to crash kits such as VoIP systems, remote access and routers running the IOS networking software. To be specific the updates address a number of vulnerabilities tied to TCP, UDP, mobile and VPN. One vulnerability also allows a normal user to gain administrative status. The vulnerabilities, however, do not allow a hacker to inject code.

Companies that split their network traffic over multiple carriers, know as “multihoming”, are creating scalability issues in the Internet’s routing system.

Cisco has proposed engineering a new tunneling mechanism to be used by the internet’s edge and core routers. “LISP” (Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol) would reduce the number of entries in routing tables stored in core routers that are operated by ISPs.

Final countdown to Conficker’s ‘activation’ begins

Conficker is expected to “stealthier” than previous versions. While the number of domain names generated through Conficker’s latest version is much greater than the original, only a fraction of the domain names generated will actually be used. Also virus is expected to vary in the times the virus attacks are launched so as to lessen visible spikes encountered by DNS, thus making pinpointing more difficult.

German police boot down doors of Wikileaks offices

The two offices of Wikileak, the whistle-blowing and anti-censorship group that exposed Australia’s ACMA filter list, were raided by German police. Wikileak has also published the blocked lists of other countries, such as Thailand and Denmark; a blacklist used to censor one’s access to the web.

While the raids were under the auspices of “discovery of evidence” for the “distribution of pornographic material”. At this point nothing has appeared to turn up as a result of the raid.

One theory is by the end of March seven of Germany’s ISPs will have signed a binding agreement with the government to block traffic to child pornography sites. Might Wikileak’s site, by way of this raid, be one to find themselves on this list?

Biggest mistake for IPv6: It’s not backwards compatible, developers admit At this week’s IETF confer

Biggest mistake for IPv6: It’s not backwards compatible, developers admit

At this week’s IETF conference in San Francisco, leaders admitted they didn’t do a good job in ensuring native IPv6 devices and networks would have backwards compatibility to native IPv4 devices.

It was mentioned that the lack of backwards compatibility has been the single critical failure towards the adoption of IPv6 to date. The lack of “mechanisms” to bridge IPv4 and IPv6 is the largest reason most ISPs and enterprises have not moved to IPv6.

Group launches strategy to block Conficker worm from .ca domain

The difference with Conficker over other viruses is Conficker utilizes domain names as part of its method for creating havoc.

.CA, the registry for Canada, has taken steps to help safeguard against Conficker using .ca domains.

Newfangled rootkits survive hard disk wiping

Researches have demonstrated the ability for malware to live in either a PC or OpenBSD environment even after the hard disk has been wiped or replaced by placing the “infection” in the computer’s BIOS.

While having BIOS-based rootkits have been around for at least three years they have only been able to successfully live on specific types of BIOSes. Researches can now demonstrate that such BIOS-based rootkits can survive on all platforms, thus making infections harder to spot and remove.

Security in the clouds – or clouds in security?

“Cloud computing” seems to be the latest buzz word at the moment. While the concept has been around for years, so too has the concept of ensuring of the security elements that are not under your control.

While there are benefits to cloud computing, i.e., providing services, or tools that are not your core competency, at a lower price than if you purchased or produced the software, cloud computing also offers the staff to ensure proper backups of your data as well systems running on up-to-date security patches. Just as there are benefits there are risks due to security that are outside of your control.

This article touches on items to think about with regards to cloud computing.

Scareware package incorporates file ransom trickery

Hackers doing their criminal deed by creating fake anti-virus packages has been in the news as of late. Here’s a new twist, though. Some hackers are corrupting files on a targeted PC, only allowing the files to become un-corrupted by downloading a program – at a fee.
