/* Fix WordPress autoupgrades on Byethost.com */

putenv(‘TMPDIR=’ . ini_get(‘upload_tmp_dir’));

October, November & December are typically loaded with parties. They come with big festivals suc

October, November & December are typically loaded with parties. They come with big festivals such as Diwali, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. But we don’t need occasions to party & meet people. Socializing is a common part of our lives. Summer comes loaded with BBQ parties for instance. There are tons of websites and TV programs that give inputs on setting up your space for party, cooking food, etc. But I haven’t come across a good comprehensive list of things to do and not to do. So, here’s my take if you are a host. Guests can find their list here. I’d love to hear from you about things that worked well & didn’t work well in other parties.

If you are the host:

Prepare, prepare, prepare are the three big guiding principles for a successful gathering.

Invite the guests well ahead of time so that their calendar issues are addressed. If you are hosting a big party, it may not be possible for everyone to attend. There may be something more important for some guests on a particular day. Just pick a day that works for most people and move on.

If you are inviting more than one person, think about the commonalities between the people you are inviting. Did they all go to the same school? Do they belong to a particular association? Do they have similar likings? If they have nothing in common and they don’t know each other, they will be bored pretty soon.

Also, are there guests who cannot stand each other? Can you host them on separate occasions? Though your event may not be a State dinner, it is important that you be considerate about your guests.

Always have some starters and juices to offer to people within 10 mins of their arrival. You do not know how hungry they are & you don’t want to keep them waiting until the other guests arrive or dinner is served. Starters are just that – starters. Enough to delay the main course but not too filling. Quite often, hosts do not offer anything to drink or eat for about an hour after arrival. Not all guests may feel comfortable to walk into your kitchen and grab something to eat.

Prepare the food ahead of time that way you can spend more time with the guests while they are at your place.

Spend no more than 20 mins to heat the food and set the table while the guests are at your place. This requires that all your food is ready ahead of time. Sure, food right from the oven tastes much better than something cooked a couple of hours ago & reheated. But you are inviting people to spend time with them. If you toil your time in the kitchen, you have missed an excellent opportunity. Select your menu carefully so that it will still taste good when it is reheated.

As the starters begin to decrease in quantity, gradually transition your guests to the main course. It is not uncommon to see the hosts delaying the main course by 2-3 hrs from the time the guests arrive. This can get too late in dinner parties because not everyone eats a very late dinner. Similarly if you invited people for lunch, serving lunch at 3 pm is late. Some guests may choose to make an excuse and leave so that they can eat outside and address their hunger.

If your guests stay late after dinner, offer them some tea / coffee. This will keep the energy going. Also, starters can be brought out again at this time for snacks.

For a BBQ party, cook one batch of everything just before your guests arrive. This ensures that they have food to eat while the next batch cooks. Some items take an hour to cook & you don’t want to leave your guests waiting that long.

Always say only nice things to your guests. You want them to leave with a good feeling from your place. Why bother inviting them if you want to settle for anything less?

If the guests include children, have some non-spicy food also in the menu.

Always ask your guests to let you know ahead of time if they have any allergies.

Always have at least one or two vegetarian options in the menu so that everyone has something to eat.

Keep some toys, crayons, etc for the children to use.

Unless it is a game night or a movie night, do not turn on the TV. If your TV shows are so important to you, then why should your guests rearrange their priorities to meet with you?

If you plan to have some music in the party, keep it low volume so that guests don’t have to speak loud over it to be heard. After the initial icebreakers & when the party kicks pace, consider turning off the music.

If any of your guests are drunk, consider not letting them drive.

Be current with the news and keep a few conversation topics handy for icebreakers.

If you have invited multiple guests who don’t know each other, introduce everyone as they arrive. This will warm them up to the room. Otherwise, they have to make their own connections and not everyone is comfortable with that. Soon, they may get bored with the party.

Send a private thank you note to each of your guests and tell them how nice it was to host them.

Do not clean the dishes or rearrange the food while your guests are still there. It can wait until all the guests leave. If you have OCD about this, tell your partner or someone you trust to remind you about this. If you want your house to be that clean that you should do this right away, why should your guests be spending time with you instead of cleaning their houses?

If the guests are all from your spouse’s network, make an effort to get to know them a little better before the event. That gives you some conversation topics. Ask about their job, how they interacted your spouse, etc. If you are bored and don’t care to talk to them & start doing your own things, they will notice. It sends a pretty strong message and it may become hard to get in touch with them again.

Travel & food are always good topics of conversation. People like good sense of humor. Stay away from racism, religion, and politics to some extent.

If you have kids, ensure that they will be well behaved. Depending on the type of audience expected for the party, you may considering sending the kids to a baby sitter.

If any guests request you to do something that you are not comfortable with such as turning on the TV game or they tamper with your things too much, be polite.

Social gatherings are a great way to get to know people, relax, and have fun. With some thought, preparation, and planning you can make the most out of it. Have fun.

“QVC’s got the hook-up,” Lopez told viewers. Really?

And then we got to see yet another pitch for the Clarisonic facial cleansing system, which has been on QVC about a zillion times, along with Nintendo’s Wii. The Clarisonic is $195 on QVC, versus $288 in retail, according to Lopez.

There are many great file hosts on the internet, here are 3 of the best, or at least I think so are:

1. Dropbox

Not only is Dropbox a great file host, it also allows you to sync files across multiple computers and devices. A free account comes with a 2GB hosting limit.

2. Box.net

An amazing file host that allows you to make folders, share files, collaborate, and keep track of file version history. The free (“lite”) account gets you 1GB of storage, and maximum 25MB upload.

3. Windows Live SkyDrive

SkyDrive is great file hosting site by Microsoft, with SkyDrive you get 25GB of storage, and integrates perfectly with Windows Live.

If there are any hosts that are unique and worth mentioning, please leave a comment.

For some time I have been getting my TV online, principally with the BBC IPlayer. I also receive ITV

For some time I have been getting my TV online, principally with the BBC IPlayer. I also receive ITV content, albeit problematically, using the ITV Player. But for some reason I was never able to get the Channel4 4OD service to work.

After selecting a programme to watch I would be presented with an empty video window, a “Loading content” message and nothing else. It didn’t matter whether I used Vista or Linux Mint, Firefox or Internet Explorer, the result was always the same – a sort of black screen of death as shown in this screenshot.

Of course I Googled the problem but found no fix. I could see from the general web chatter that others were having the problem but, clearly, it was a minority issue and there was no obvious solution.

Eventually I saw a reference to a test link that pointed to the url “realmedia.channel4.com” and clicked on it. I expected some kind of test page response or, at worst, perhaps an invalid request or maybe a 404 not found error. Instead nothing happened at all. The click went nowhere. This provided the clue to the problem solution.

After checking my hosts file I found that “realmedia.channel4.com” was being redirected to my localhost at 127.0.0.1 – i.e. nowhere. And this was the reason that 4OD wasn’t working. After commenting out that entry in the hosts file 4OD worked perfectly.

How did this redirection get into the hosts file? I posted a previous blog called “Using The Hosts File To Ward Off Web Attacks” which described how you can download a hosts file from this site to redirect hundreds of well known bad site urls to localhost at 127.0.0.1. This redirection makes these bad sites inaccessible and is a great enhancement to security on the PC generally. However it seems that, for some reason, “realmedia.channel4.com” is included in the hosts file as a bad site url thereby preventing 4OD from working. I’m not sure why the entry for 4OD is considered a bad site that needs to be redirected but it is, as of the date of this post, still being included in the download.

So if you have a problem using the Channel4 4OD service as described above do check your hosts file to see if “realmedia.channel4.com” has been redirected. If you find that this is the case then either removing it or commenting it out will hopefully fix the problem.

Of course now I have to find something on 4OD that I consider worth watching. Sadly, from what I can see, it appears to be some kind of landfill site for the dross that is celebrity culture. But that’s another rant altogether.

Her first show is on at 2 a.m., too late for us. But Crowell has faux leather handbags ranging in price from $32 to $66, as well as several scarves.

She even has a pair of reading glasses, at $30.

While Crowell is only bringing in accessories this visit, when her Judy Crowell Collection does its full launch next year she will be selling sportswear and outerwear, as well.

Crowell’s husband, fellow QVC and HSN alum Paul Deasy, already hosts a jewelry line for ShopNBC called the Gem Insider.

As well as you may know, the Page County Watch Blog is no longer. For reasons unknown, Alice Richmond has decided to no longer maintain a blog that has in recent years, open the eyes of many residents of Page County Va on issues that can have a devestating effect on our lives if these recent issues had remained “hidden”. The Blog site had also allow us to continue with disscussion of other issues that also concerns us.

If it has been wished that I continue to bring matters to light, I will be proud too. I will continue with that tradition, but with a different twist. Since I am not as a “jounalist” as Alice, I am going to need help. I do need contributors. Those that are not going to be afraid to post and who will not post false information. If you would like to help, then let me know via the comment on this post. You have to have a wordpress account before you can be added.

The information provided can be about anything.

I would like to thank Alice for opening our eyes.

Tomorrow I catch the Greyhound to Ottawa to stay with my former boss from WUSC. We worked together for the Student Refugee Program when I first got the right to work in Canada. She has invited me to stay for the weekend, which is a good thing as things are still up in the air regarding my next host.

So far I have been very polite about approaching potential hosts. I only ever contacted one farm at a time and waited for a response before contacting the next one. I tried this approach again this time again but was getting so many rejections that it was getting frustrating. Also I’d been struggling so hard to put my six potential farms into order of preference (overall they all received roughly equal votes by email, blog and facebook!) so I decided to just email them all and see who got back to me first.

Two have replied. One said she already had someone so sorry, but no. One said yes, but she seems to work all day so I’m concerned that I’ll be there all one my own for three weeks. Another is waiting to see if another pair of Wwoofers confirm. Silence from the other three.

It seems that my next host is still as much of a mystery to me as to the rest of you. But things have always worked out for the best so far, so I trust that they will continue to do so, no matter where I end up.

Dear Anna and Ellie: I read that Ellie has celiac disease and thought you might be the person to ask

Dear Anna and Ellie:

I read that Ellie has celiac disease and thought you might be the person to ask how I should handle next week’s Thanksgiving dinner. Many of the family and friends that are coming to our house have some type of dietary restriction, and I am getting overwhelmed with all of the special dishes I will need to make. How can I respect their needs and maintain my sanity?

I was thinking of having everyone bring a dish they could eat and I will supply the turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetable. Does that sound reasonable or will they think I am being a lazy host?

–Too Many Dishes To Cook

Dear Too Many Dishes To Cook:

It is very thoughtful of you to be so cognizant of the dietary restrictions of your family and friends, and this will surely make all of your guests feel welcome. However, you also need to take care of yourself, which means not going crazy trying to fulfill everyone else’s needs. Reaching a balance as host can be tricky, but it can be done, especially if both hosts and guests remember that what really counts is being together, showing appreciation for one another, and having fun.

Preparing dishes to meet dietary restrictions that are not your own can be extremely difficult and stressful, particularly if the other person’s diet is not widely known, intricate, and critical to his or her health (that is a lot of responsibility!). For instance, it may be easier to recognize recipes that are suitable for your lactose intolerant uncle and vegetarian sister than it is to find one for your celiac cousin. Personally, for Thanksgiving (and all other gatherings), Ellie does not expect her family and friends to take it upon themselves to cook for her because there are hidden sources of gluten everywhere and she has a bad reaction from even slight cross-contamination. That would be too much to ask! Instead, she will bring along a dish or two that she can eat and share.

As a host, your duty is make your guests feel welcome, which means acknowledging their dietary restrictions and being as accommodating as is realistic. This does not mean providing a dish for every dietary restriction. Tell your family and friends with special diets that you are aware of their needs and want them to feel comfortable, and since you will be providing the turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetable, they can bring anything else they would like to enjoy.

Veteran home shopping host Judy Crowell says her return to Minnesota is like Dorothy coming back hom

Veteran home shopping host Judy Crowell says her return to Minnesota is like Dorothy coming back home from Oz.

Crowell, an Army brat, began her career in home shopping in 1989 at Cable Value Network, CVN, in Minnesota in1989. Later this month, Nov. 24, Crowell will debut a new accessory and clothing line on ShopNBC, which is in Minneapolis.

“It’s almost like Dorothy,” Crowell said. “I clicked my heels and I’m going back home again, full circle.”

Crowell and her husband Paul Deasy, who is guest host for a jewelry line on ShopNBC, both started their gigs as home shopping hosts in 1989. While Crowell was at CVN, Deasy was at Home Shopping Network, now called HSN.

“Ironically, as life would have it, our lives were parallel before we met each other,” Crowell said.

Judy Crowell and Springer Spaniel friend Brie

Crowell had also traveled to places like China so she could discuss jade on the air, while Deasy have been to Africa at tanzanite mines and to Australia to see opals mined, to better describe them.

The husband-and-wife team have a common love of travel and jewelry, as well as “the love of really being able to tell a story about where things come from so that our customer could appreciate the experience and what it takes to get the product into their hands, that it’s not just plucked from a tree,” according to Crowell.

Crowell and Deasy both first worked at QVC and then HSN together, until exiting the No. 2 home shopping channel.

One of our most-asked questions is why did the married couple leave HSN. Deasy exited in December 2007, while Crowell left in April 2008.

After 18 years of each being a host, Crowell said, “We each kind of came to the conclusion that it was just time for a new challenge….That really is the truth. It was just time to move on and do some new things.”

Crowell and Deasy each made the choice to leave HSN themselves, according to Crowell.

“Paul had made the decision to leave first, and I was thinking about it,” she said. “I really had one of these moments, it was actually a long weekend, of sitting in front of the fireplace and staring into the fire and thinking I’ve been a television personality for 28 years, and now I’m thinking about getting out of the business and taking a chance, with no net.”

It was not an easy decision, according to Crowell.

“It was really scary because I really love the business and I loved being on television and I love the interaction with the customers,” she said. “That’s why you do it. …Whenever that phone call would come in, and it was somebody who would say, ‘Hi, I’ve been watching you for so many years. It’s so nice to talk to you. Say hi to Paul.’ That’s the joy in this…and now you’re saying goodbye to it.”

Paul Deasy

Full-year non-compete clauses kept Crowell and Deasy off the air, and gave them time to build their own businesses.

“If you were to ask ‘Why were they gone for so long, that answers part of that question,’” she said.

In addition to planning her ShopNBC line, Crowell has been doing voiceover work. She has also joined the World Fashion Council and is taking classes to be certified a fashion trend forecaster.

Crowell and Deasy approached ShopNBC about doing lines for it, according to Crowell.

“At one point we were talking about, ‘You can to one channel, I can go to another,’” she said. “And we considered that for awhile, but as timing would have it, as the needs of the different channels would have it, it turned out as they say, meant to be.”

Crowell and Deasy are in a way replacements for home-shopping’s other veteran husband-and-wife team, Pam and Wes McCoy. The McCoy’s were let go as hosts from ShopNBC in a cost-cutting measure, but Pam still has a clothing line on ShopNBC.

The jewelry line Deasy guest hosts, the Gem Insider, debuted in July.

“ShopNBC has treated us like gold,” Crowell said. “They’re thrilled to have us both on board.”

Deasy’s book “Colored Gemstones” is sold on ShopNBC. And he is working on a second book on gems, this one on opals.

“From now on he’s going to be focusing on individual gemstones,” Crowell said. “And then he eventually wants to write another book similar to the one that’s already available, but on another whole series of gems that he didn’t have a chance to touch on in this book. There are hundreds of other ones.”

The night before their 2003 wedding, Crowell and Deasy with Kristen and Kyle

Crowell and Deasy still live in Florida, where their former employer HSN is based. They don’t plan to relocate to Minneapolis, where ShopNBC is located.

First of all, Deasy’s children, Kristen and Kyle, from a prior marriage live in Florida, as do Crowell’s parents.

And Crowell said that she has resided in the Midwest, in states such as Wisconsin, while working for TV before coming to home shopping.

“It’s a great place to live,” Crowell said. “It’s absolutely beautiful. The people are wonderful, but it’s really cold…. There’s something about landing in Tampa. Whenever we come home, it feels like a vacation.”

Crowell accompanies Deasy when he travels to Minneapolis for his ShopNBC shows.

“We’re up there a couple of times a month,” she said.

It looks like Crowell and Deasy have found happiness.

“We’re a great team,” she said. “We’re really lucky. It took a long time to find.”

This is why I like Ubuntu, there’s an app for almost everything!

Okay, so if you have a blog like I do, and you have limited bandwidth or if you just dont want to use your wordpress editor, there’s a really cool Blog app called BloGTK Weblog Client (there are others such as Lekhonee etc. but none are as good as this one). This app allows you to post your blogs directly from your desktop.

To download it, go to Ubuntu Software Center and search for BloGTK Weblog Client.

Or if you want to use the terminal you can install BloGTK by typing the following command:

sudo apt-get install blogtk

You’ll be asked for your password and the software will be installed.

Now coming to the configuring part. BloGTK is intalled in the Internet tab of your GNOME menu. Start the application. It looks like this:

In the BloGTK application click on the “Edit” menu and then on “Accounts and Settings”. Now you’ll get a window similar to the pic given below:

As you can see you need to set the options as the following:

Server URL: http://www.name of your blog.wordpress.com/xmlrpc.php
(This is of course for WordPress, if you’re using Blogger, your Server Address should be: http://www.blogger.com/api/RPC2)

Blogging System: Movable Type
(If you’re using Blogger, your Blogging System should obviously be “Blogger”!)

Enter your username and password and leave all other settings untouched. Now when you’re done open the “File” menu and click on the “Connect” option.

Thats it. Now write your post and and post it on your blog. Pretty simple eh?

So I’m kicking around the idea of moving the blog (I know I know) to its own home — yes, a site I’d have to pay for — mainly so I can have a little more freedom in terms of layout, allowing ads, etc. While I’m mostly happy with the current layout and WordPress, there’s some tweaks that I’d like to do. Plus, there’s some other plans in the mix that I’d like to play around with in the future.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a host? WordPress recommends a few, like Blue Host, Go Daddy, Dream Host, Media Temple and Just Host, but really, I have to admit I’m out of my league here and have no idea of what I’d need. And I really don’t get the whole cost variance thing — like why are some base packages $3.95 (as a special) and others $20? I guess I’ll have to start doing some research.

But if anyone can point me in the right direction, please do. What to look for, what I’ll need, etc. Again, way out of my league here. Thanks in advance.

Hello Everyone, WordPress is by far the best CMS system out there, you can do so many different thin

Hello Everyone,

WordPress is by far the best CMS system out there, you can do so many different things with it, from running a job board site to a CSS gallery. Today I wanted to showcase some of the best alternative ways to using WordPress and prove that it can be so much more than just a blog. The great thing about WordPress is it’s so easy to use, in fact I would go as far as saying it’s idiot proof because all you have to do is fill in fields and your page is done. This is why so many other people use it as there platform for other type websites, such as Membership Sites, Review Sites and Portfolio Websites. I hope you enjoy the list and let me know how your online business has benefited from WordPress.

WordPress e-Commerce

This plugin makes WordPress into a really neat online store. Most online stores are bulky, expensive and complicated, not this one, it’s simple and free, just like WordPress itself!

* * * * *

When I began to research for different ways to using WordPress, I soon realised that I could be doing a lot more to improve my website. For example I could use the Wiki theme for a Wikipedia area on any blogging FAQ people have and I could add a job board for those looking for web design work to be done for their blog.

I hope you enjoyed today’s post.

To Our Success,

Border provinces and 60 international travel agents from southern Kien Giang to northern Lang Son province have attended the first seminar on border tourism development in Lang Son.

Border tourism plays an important role in the nation, as it has 4,550km of land border and 25 border provinces, lined with 42 international and major border gates, said the seminar.

However, it said, border tourism development has failed to match the country’s potential as the number of international tourists coming to Vietnam through its border gates represents only around 20 percent of the country’s total.

This is attributed to limited investment in tourism development, promotion activities and personnel development in border provinces, poor tourism infrastructure and complicated entry and exit procedures, said the seminar.

The participants assessed the situation and solutions to promote and develop border tourism together with maintaining defence security.

They also put forward solutions to reform entry and exit procedures at the border gates as well as orientations and policies to develop the traffic infrastructure in Vietnam’s border provinces.

Lang Son, Lao Cai, Quang Ninh and Dien Bien in the north, Kon Tum in the central region and Tay Ninh and An Giang in the south and a number of international travel agents shared their experiences in organising trans-border tours through border gates.

The seminar confirmed the significance as well as the considerable potential of an international land border gate system for tourism activities.

It suggested due attention be paid to solutions to policy mechanism, tourism planning, infrastructure investment and the management of community tourism in border-adjacent provinces.

Michael Bierut of Pentagram and Design Observer fame, has shared some of his words of wisdom collect

Michael Bierut of Pentagram and Design Observer fame, has shared some of his words of wisdom collected through his years as a designer. He digs through his 86 notebooks filled with his design work, and distills his thoughts down to 5 awesome design secrets.

If you don’t have the time to watch the 19 minute video, check out Michael’s 5 secrets which I have reproduced below.

1) Listen first, then design

2) Don’t avoid the obvious

3) The problem contains the solution

4) Indulge your obsessions

5) Love is the answer

What I also found particularly interesting was how Michael started his talk by claiming that he is not creative at all. (Shock, horror!) He then goes on to describe himself more like a “doctor” waiting for “patients” to come to him with design problems to solve. This echos my believe that design or creativity cannot exist in a vacuum.

Recreate DNS Hosts From Export File Into a Microsoft DNS Server

The following script was created to add hosts, from a list of exported hosts and IPs originally from a unrelated DNS server’s zone, into the specified Microsoft DNS server’s DNS zone.

The basic usage of the script is:

CScript AddDNSHost.vbs /DNSServer:DNSServer /DNSZone:DNSZone /HostName:HostName /HostIP:HostIP

And an example:

AddDNSHost.vbs /DNSServer:192.168.0.1 /DNSZone:DNSZone.local /HostName:MyComputer /HostIP:192.168.1.123

A very simple way of constructing multiple commands can be achieved with practically any speadsheet application where column A holds the list of host names, column B holds their respected IP addresses and column C the following command (starting from row 1):

=”AddDNSHost.vbs /DNSServer:192.168.0.1 /DNSZone:DNSZone.local /HostName:” & A1 & ” /HostIP:” & B1

The above command can be copied once for each row.

The resulting constructed command can then be directly pasted into a command prompt

‘* * * * * * * * * * * Start of AddDNSHost.vbs * * * * * * * * * * *

On Error Resume Next

strDNSServer = Wscript.Arguments.Named(“DNSServer”)

strDNSZone = Wscript.Arguments.Named(“DNSZone”)

strHostName = Wscript.Arguments.Named(“HostName”)

strHostIP = Wscript.Arguments.Named(“HostIP”)

If Len(Trim(strDNSServer)) > 0 And Len(Trim(strDNSZone)) > 0 And Len(Trim(strHostName)) > 0 And Len(Trim(strHostIP)) > 0 Then

If Right(UCase(strHostName), Len(strDNSZone) + 1) “.” & UCase(strDNSZone) Then

strHostName = strHostName & “.” & strDNSZone

End If

intRecordClass = 1

intTTL = 600

strComputer = “.”

Set objWMIService = GetObject(“winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\” & strComputer & “\root\MicrosoftDNS”)

Set objItem = objWMIService.Get(“MicrosoftDNS_AType”)

intReturn = objItem.CreateInstanceFromPropertyData(strDNSServer, strDNSZone, strHostName, intRecordClass, intTTL, strHostIP)

If Err.Number = 0 And intReturn = 0 Then

WScript.Echo strHostName & vbTab & “Added”

Else

WScript.Echo strHostName & vbTab & “Failed”

End If
