Punkie the Italian Fashionista/Blogger Speaks to ZIF

Having an Italian woman send you pictures of herself in a zebra outfit is one way to get your heart palpitating. When that woman is a talented fashion blogger from Milan, you need to slow that pulse down, process the images and post about it. Because this young star on the rise is not just another trick attempting to satiate your grossly juvenile desires. No, this is a real woman, a fashionista, a pleasurable token from Italy. Bellissima! ZIF: What is the deal with all the Zebra print in fashion this past year? Zebra print is a la mode, correct?

Punkie: Of course! I think zebra print could be current and a la mode, all the time! If you match it in the right way, it can always work!

ZIF: We are a hip hop site. Do you listen to rap music? Italian rap? American? Your impressions?

Punkie: I listen to all kinds of music! If a certain song attracts me, I will surely add it to my playlist! For example in Italy I love so many artists, one is named Caparezza. He is a bit rapper and a bit storyteller… his songs are always amazing me! And I ADORE Sean Paul. I know that he’s more dancehall than rap, but he’s great! Oh and I also like Matisyahu a lot, the melodies of his songs are stunning!

ZIF: What about hip hop fashion? Where does it find its inspiration, in your opinion?

Punkie: I don’t know where the inspiration comes from… I think from the streets! Personally I don’t strictly follow this trend. But I think that in summer a large pair of jeans, sneakers and a simple cotton tank works so well! Oh and the collaboration between Missy Elliot and Adidas is just a fantastic! Some pieces of the collection are AMAZING! Anyway, I respect all kinds of fashion. Even if someone is being himself wearing a certain type of dress, he should be admired!

ZIF: What can we expect from you and your commitment to fashion? Making any industry moves? Designer maybe? Model?

Punkie: I don’t know where my blog could carry me. My biggest dream is to have the opportunity to study shoe design. But I’m open to all opportunity, especially I’d like so much to collaborate with a magazine for example!

ZIF: Last question. Zebra or Lion?

Punkie: Zebra!!! Lion is the king of jungle, but zebras attract me so much! Their coat is some kind of amazing! I like the fact they have perfectly detailed stripes, but the rest of their body is not so perfect: they have bold knee but thin and a bit twisted legs, a big and rounded stomach and moot point teeth! They’re so funny under certain point of view! But the coat… the coat is perfection!

They say opposites attract, but seeing a beautiful woman with an unattractive man never fails to attract comment. Think Christine Aguilera and Jordan Bratman; Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett; Jay-Z and Beyonce; Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson; Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, and the newly married Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard.

While some of these couples – like Julia and Lyle – didn’t last long – others like Christine and Jordan appear to have the relationship game sussed.

Christina recently gushed to E! News, “”Jordan just continuously…just makes me fall deeper and deeper in love with him every day. He just exudes such love…and [is] such a great father to Max (their toddler son) that it just makes me the happiest woman alive.”

Positive Talk with Beautiful Wives

Jordan keeps his woman happy by surprising her with balloons, leaving love notes, and maintaining a tradition known as Naked Sundays, where the couple spends the day totally naked.

Massive amounts of pampering no doubt help Christine and Jordan bond, but the beauty gap may also have something to do with it.

A 2008 study found that found that married couples communicate more positively when wives are more attractive than their husbands. (Conversely both spouses behaved more negatively when the husband was more attractive than the wife.)

Previous research has shown that people seeks relationships with others who are judged to be attractive. The research wanted to see if the benefits of looking good lasted into marriage.

Benefits of Looking Good

The University of Florida study was an effort to answer the questions “are the benefits of attractiveness limited to formative stages of new relationships?”

Researchers examined 82 couples in the first six months of their marriages. Spouses reported their marital satisfaction and were rated by trained observers regarding their levels of attractiveness and the positivity of the interactions with each other.

Researchers found “both spouses tended to behave more positively when wives were more attractive than their husbands.” Both spouses behaved “more negatively when husbands were more attractive than their wives,” according to the study.

“Certainly, physical attractiveness is not the only thing that matters to marriage,” says lead researcher Associate Professor James McNulty. “At a more general level, the study suggests that spouses will behave more positively when their partners meet the desires that are important to them.”

As we said, Christine knows pampering – just feeling appreciated – certainly helps.

About a week ago two frustrated lesbians (S – aged 70, and G – 69), Hot Chick and Wineou had a slightly different Saturday afternoon. The girls who don’t go for guys will be referred to as S70 and G69 in future (they live in the same block of flats as Hot Chick, and have been friends of hers for years).

We started off by attending the firing of two muzzle-loaded cannons outside the Chavonnes Battery (www.chavonnesmuseum.co.za) at the V&A Waterfront in a belated celebration of Heritage Day (also known as National Braai Day). I was given the honour of helping the expert load the cannons, and was then allowed to fire the first one. In case global warming should cause such future havoc that we no longer have the ability to shoot each other with modern weapons, I now know exactly how to do it in the ancient way.

I won’t give you all the trade secrets but can reveal that the final stage of the process is to pour dry gunpowder into the vertical vent that leads to the charge that has been rammed into the barrel. A long wick is attached to a stick ending in a piece of wire, and the end of the wick tied to the wire is lit with a match. One has to stand on a precise spot at an angle to the gun, close enough to do the deed, but far enough away not to be hit by the considerable recoil of the cannon or to be singed by the 6ft flame that shoots up from the vent, or burnt to a cinder by the massive 8ft flame that simultaneously comes out of the front of the thing.

This is not normally a difficult task, but Wineou’s hand developed a slight tremor, and pouring rain put the wick out. Eventually the patient cannon master resorted to sticking a cigarette in his mouth, lighting it and giving it a couple of enthusiastic draws. Before the downpour could dampen it he attached the smouldering ciggie to the wire, and Wineou managed to make the cannon go bang while shouting instructions to Hot Chick to capture the event on his cellphone.

The result was an exceedingly arty picture of her thumb.

Afterwards Willem Steenkamp treated us to an hour-long, fascinating tour of the battery and we learnt everything we could wish to know about guns, batteries, sailing ships and the early history of Cape Town. Willem (tall and 70ish, an army major, ex-journalist, author, military historian, tour guide and brilliant raconteur) would be pleased to know that S70 later remarked that, if she were that way inclined, he was the sort of chap she could go for. 

Hot Chick had told me that on a previous excursion to the Waterfront S70 had developed a desire to get away from poncy places and sit down at a pub and have a beer and a sausage. After traipsing around for hours they had come to the conclusion that Cape Town has every type of tavern under the sun, but not one that gives that simple combination. Incidentally, Cape Town used to be known as The Tavern of the Seas.

So, while the rain got stronger, I led the trio to the nearby Paulaner Bräuhaus. There we downed flagons of German beer, and snacked on sauerkraut and a variety of sausages and frankfurters; and realised that bangers and beer are possible if you know where to go. S70 began to mellow after a bout of invective about G69 – an office-bearer in the Anglican Church, who admitted to her desires and was prepared to share her flat, but not her bed, with S70. She commented freely on the standard of talent in the room, and made acerbic observations about our dusky waitress who did not have the heaving, creamy bosoms, or snappy service, she expected at a German beer-house. It was fun to sit in a pub with a couple of girls who were just as keen to look at the other girls as I was. Hot Chick endured this with a bemused expression.

It was a bit of a change from the atmosphere and fine dining we’d experienced recently at Gordon Ramsay’s maze restaurant at the One&Only.

The lesbians left, and Hot Chick and I went to see the animated movie Up. We are not fans of fantasy, animation or violence. But Up, and District 9 – which we’d seen the week before – were two of the finest films we’d seen in a long time, despite being full of the things we thought we didn’t like. I think only a South African can fully appreciate the humour and pokes at the past that occur in District 9.

Two weeks beforehand, on a soft spring day, I met a mathematical clown on top of Signal Hill. She is visiting us from England, and helping children in poorer areas to appreciate maths and science by using props like balloons. She was happy to pose for the camera.

Hot Chick looks like this after a summer of surfing

braai day (24 September) Hot Chick announced that she and her female friends, who used to be keen surfers, are thinking of taking up the sport again. The desire was sparked by a walk she and Sue took along the beachfront at Muizenberg. There it is now possible to hire all sorts of boards as well as wetsuits. And get lessons from one of four surf schools, including one run by model Roxy Louw.

I might join them.

A work in progress for a friend. This is in the very early stages and still needs a lot of work before I consider it complete.

There’s actually a story that goes with this. It’s a character the friend I’m drawing this for came up with.

Shut it down NOW! I just saw the most anticipated video yet. Uffie’s video for Pop the Glock! Pop the fucking Glock! Are you kidding me. This has been in the works for how long. This is a video you must go check out NOW! I am in love!

I know some people may not like her or are just over her. Whatever side you stand on, you can’t deny Uffie.

Today, while minding my own business on campus, sitting on the grassy area near the fantastic library browsing the internets, when some guy comes up to me.

“Hey there, do you like electronic music? House music?”

“uhh, yea”

“well, blah blah blah..”

He pitches this club he is promoting in Santa Clara, hands me the flyer, and continues on his quest to badger everyone about the club within a 100-foot radius.

I’m not the club-going type of person, but I am interested in the flyers and posters that the promoters put out.

Usually its the same ol’ two step:  Hot chicks, sponsors on the back, small pics of  z-list “celebrities” thats going to show up, and display typefaces that would instantly kill any boner of design professors that just shook hands with Milton Glaser.

Though what I just said might sound like I don’t like club flyers, I actually do appreciate them (no sarcasm). Where else can I get often updates of scantily-clad women, photoshopped and used without copyright permission, into a gradient background with clip art of boomboxes and palm trees, all accentuated by intense neon colors? The school campus, that’s where.

This flyer is a failure of a club flyer. Yes, it has some “decent” design, but also vice-versa. Lets run down some of the redeeming factors:

1) hot chick

2) hot chick’s bare [sic] ass

3? ) they are fans of  the Swiss graphic design style?

First two reasons are quite self-explanatory and follows the formula of club flyer design, but I’m quite perturbed about the last one. Since when do clubs start using Helvectica? Or maybe it isn’t Helvetica, I wouldn’t know, I’m not a design nerd. The front side is minimalistic with no sight of boomboxes or irrelevant text. Not only are those signs of being Swiss-eques, but on the back side (of the flyer, not talking about the girl’s ass) we see the words “pure entertainment” at a 45 degree angle, and at a perpenticular angle are other smaller textual information.  Angles seen quite often in the Swiss design  and projects of design students in school.

Whats wrong with Swiss design, huh? Nothing, just that minimalistic style of design doesn’t seem to mesh with loud, rambunctious, laser-shooting clubs. Just my opinion.

So thats all the about wraps up the positives of the flyer, so let me just run down a little bit of the downfalls of it:

1) track/kern the motherfucking type!

comeon now, I am almost certain (with no factual evidence) that this flyer is made by a beginning design student. They should know better.

2) “ELECTRONIC DETENTION” is too small.

break it into two lines, so it can be big and loud and obnoxious. Also put more effort into the display text, make it [metaphorically] shiny so that people would be attracted to it like flies to a electric deathtrap.

3) shitty printing

Colors aren’t that vivid in print

4) space is empty

So empty that you can charge $1000 to rent the space if it were in SF.

5) better wording/more words

The flyer mentions price and date, but no time. Maybe it is an unwritten rule about when clubs start, sorta like the first two rules of Fight Club, except this gets more sweaty, hallucinogens, and homo-erotic undertones.  I’m not a club-goer, so what the hell would I know.

Dress code is school themed, yet guys are to be “fashionably casual,” which makes sense to me as I always liked to wear just white tees and baggy pants back in high school.  Judging by the picture, for ladies to “keep it sexy,” they mean for the ladies to “keep it sexually loose?”

So the flyer, compared to other club flyers, suck more eggs, but who am I to judge. Afterall, it is the content of the product thats important, and not the look of said content. Maybe when the last line on the back of the flyer says gift upon entrance, they are handing out underpants to the females.
