Eis a lista

2. MGMT – “Time to pretend”
3. The Strokes – “Hard to explain” – existem músicas deles que são melhores – Reptilia, Someday, Electricityscape…
4. MIA – “Paper planes” – também existem música melhores dela – Pull up the people, 10 dollar, bucky done gun
6. The Rapture – “House of jealous lovers’
7. Klaxons – “Golden skans”
8. Blur – “Out of time”
9. Arcade Fire – “Rebellion (lies)”
10. Arctic Monkeys – “A certain romance”
11. The Libertines – “Can’t stand me now”
12. The Streets – “Dry your eyes”
13. The Walkmen – “The rat”
14. The White Stripes – “Seven nation army”
15. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Bang”
16. Rihanna – “Umbrella”
17. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Maps”
18. Outkast – “Ms Jackson”
19. Radiohead – “Reckoner”
20. Hot Chip – “Over and over”

"Few people could encapsulate both rustic and electronic"

If there is ever a song to not judge by song title and album title, let alone its cover, it would be this week’s iTunes Free Download. Apple Bobbing is from the album Harvest Festival, the debut solo album from Joe Goddard, of Hot Chip fame (Of which the album art is a still life of a bowl of fruit). One thing you will instantly be able to work out from the artist is the genre. Yes, despite the rustic appearance, this song is electro, and really nothing more. It’s even an instrumental, so nothing you hear on this track came from anything that didn’t need to be plugged in.

There’s not much to say about this song because, to be honest it’s pretty much just cheery electro by numbers. Ok, there’s a light sprinkle of melancholy, but not enough to bring you down. My main gripe is that a lot of electronically produced tracks follow the same formula, and Apple Bobbing is no different. You start with a few basic layers, and slowly build up the thickness of the sound. Then about half way through, drop out some of those original layers for effect, leaving the newer stuff. Then bring everything back in after a few bars, before gradually removing layers, ending up back where you started by the end of the song. Sound like any song you recognise? Well, it describes this song too.

Is it worth downloading? Well, for me, no. I doubt I’ll go back to this, and I’m honestly considering deleting it to make space for stuff I’ll enjoy more. If you like electro-pop or are a fan of Hot Chip, it may be worth more to you, but I find it does nothing to catch my attention in any real way.

4/10

You’d be forgiven at the moment for thinking we were nearing the end of a decade. The interweb

You’d be forgiven at the moment for thinking we were nearing the end of a decade. The interwebs have been awash of late with more countdowns, best ofs, top tens and general reminiscences of the 2000’s then you could poke a digital stick at. Suddenly everybody is a critic, and while some of the countdowns have been insightful and thought-provoking, others have been….well, like this one. For the nostalgic, these countdowns are practically memory-heaven. But for those who don’t buy into that sort of stuff, it gets a little tiring. So, what better than to list some of the best (and worst) ‘best-of’ lists currently clogging up cyber-space?

Pitchfork: P2K

Over the past months American music site Pitchfork have taken an in-depth look at the decade in music. Way back in the dark ages of 2001 the site barely existed, but since then has grown to be one of the most formidable online music news and reviews sites on the net. Not only does P2K count down the best albums, songs and music videos, it also features a series of essays detailing some of the more interesting developments in music over the past ten years. Of particular note is the ‘Decade in Indie’ and the social history of the mp3.

Highlights
Best Album: Radiohead- Kid A
Best Song: Outkast- B.O.B.

Paste Magazine: The 25 best Album Covers

Slightly more obscure is Paste magazine’s countdown of the best album covers. It has been argued that as digital sales boom and physical CD sales decline, the quality of modern album art is going steadily downhill (as this cover would seem to prove). Regardless, Paste have put together an interesting countdown, which includes the likes of The Flaming Lips, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire and Lil Wayne. Whoever decided to award Neko Case’s Middle Cyclone cover as number 1 though needs to go back and re-take primary school art classes.

Highlights
Number 1: Neko Case- Middle Cyclone
Number 2: Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavilion (and rightly so)

The A.V. Club: The 30 best TV Shows

The problem with critics is often that their views on what is ‘good’ differs from the majority of the viewing public. Which is a shame, but it’s also the reason why most of the shows on the A.V. Club’s list of best TV shows of the decade have either ended or been cancelled. Still, it’s a formidable list. The top 3 (The Wire, Arrested Development and the Sopranos) are undoubtedly some of the finest productions since television’s inception, let alone in this decade. Other notable shows include Mad Men, Lost and The West Wing, just scraping in at number 30. The best part of this countdown though is the shitfight in the comments as to what constitutes a ‘decade’. Hilarious.

Highlights
Number 1: The Wire
Number 15: Veronica Mars
Number 22: Six Feet Under

News.com.au: Moment of the Decade

Oh, News.com.au. Purveyor of fine, quality journalism. Not content with simply telling Middle Australia what the best bits of the noughties were, good old Rupert has gone and encouraged everyone to name their own favourites! For anyone that’s ever read the comments to any article on the site, that should be enough to click your way on over. In case you need any more incentive though, today’s category is ‘Killers, Haters, Tools: Choose the Villian of the decade’. Apparently Kyle Sandilands and John Mayer are in the same league as Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Who would have thought? The fun doesn’t stop there. Oh no siree, it doesn’t. For you creative types, you can even have a go at naming what the next decade should be called! An issue of utmost importance, of course. Seriously, the sooner this site becomes paid-only, the better.

Lowlights
Pop Culture
Money
Sex & Life
…actually, just spend a good 15 minutes trawling through the site. It’ll make your day.

Times Online: The 100 Best Movies of the Noughties

Slightly more classy news outlet Times Online went all out and counted down the top 100 cinematic releases of the decade. With everything from political drama Milk to Roman-epic Gladiator to comedy Knocked Up, the list does well to cater for everyone…up until the odd choice of The Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum at number 2 (So really it should have been the best 101 movies). And Team America World Police in the top 5? You must be joking.

In Brief
Number 1: Hidden
Number 16: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Number 34: Finding Nemo
Number 64: Anchorman

Well that’s about it. Some of the best (and worst) countdowns of the best (and worst) things to happen in the noughties. Of course, a quick google search will reveal thousands more best-ofs then the ones here. But really, is there much point? When it comes down to it, who gets to decide that Franz Ferdinand is better than Hot Chip? Or that Monsters, Inc. deserves to place ahead of Pan’s Labyrinth?

Perhaps the best countdown of the decade should go to Hungry Beast. They look at the ten best years of the 2000’s. You can check that out here.

Hot Chip is set to prove they are no fluke with their new single “Take It In”. This new release from the modern masters of synth-pop is surprisingly the final track of the anticipated release One Life Stand. The latest buzz is that Hot Chip has announced themselves as trendsetters in the modern world of Indietronic. There is a maturity and an advancement of song craft which if is a preview of things to come could see their fan base swell dramatically in the next six months.

The stellar production of repetitious slow grinding beats is the driving force behind the desolate verses. The boys are showing off their skills with soaring and catchy choruses coupled with a minimalist trademark. However unlike before, the additional undertones of choir style backing and piano combining with electronic pop complete a superb piece of music.

Click Here to Listen to "Take it On"

This is shameless and with lyrics such as “my heart has flown to you just like a dove” it is surprising how it is not corny or over sentimental. I thoroughly recommend this and it may well be the track of the 09’.

Hot Chip are back with their fourth studio album ‘One Life Stand’, released 5th February 2010.

‘One Life Stand’ is a full-blooded leap into the unknown, an album that claims to be awash with Hot Chip’s trademark creative bravery and a searing emotional intensity from first track to last.

Indeed, ‘One Life Stand’ is being toted as Hot Chip’s most complete body of work to date, an album that is more cohesive and more soulful than 2007’s ambidextrous ‘Made In The Dark’ and more ambitious than 2005’s Mercury nominated and Grammy award winning ‘The Warning’.

‘One Life Stand’ is an album which just might establish Hot Chip as one of the most relevant and creative bands of our era.

Joe Goddard, Alexis Taylor, Felix Martin, Al Doyle and Owen Clarke all return to work on the bands fourth instalment.

‘One Life Stand’ boasts a proliferation of influences as diverse as the burgeoning UK funky scene to soul music, modern R&B, Northern Soul, Gospel, Golden Age Electronica, House, the sounds of Arthur Russell, Prince and Theo Parish, and they all sit effortlessly alongside the band’s signature pop aesthetics, wild electronics, off kilter beats and intoxicating musical experimentation in a way that only Hot Chip can execute.

The tracklisting for One Life Stand is as follows:

1. Thieves In The Night

2. Hand Me Down Your Love

3. I Feel Better

4. One Life Stand

5. Brothers

6. Slush

7. Alley Cats

8. We Have Love

9. Keep Quiet

10. Take It In

Right now I’m hooked on this Fake Blood rmx of Stuck on Repeat- it’s got great build up and a heavy drop. The original Stuck on Repeat was produced by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and was released on Boots’ debut album Hands. Her sound is similar to Kylie Minogue, but unlike Kylie, Little Boots actually plays instruments and writes her own songs. She may have little boots, but she def packs a big punch.

Joe Goddard has taken a musical sabbatical from Hot Chip to create a veritable fruit smorgasbord of electro tracks on an album which is an indulgent, unashamed homage to the sounds closest to his heart, using the musical toys he likes to play with best.

With 12 tracks each named after fruit, the engine room of Hot Chip has placed his tongue firmly in cheek with first solo offering, Harvest Festival. And to tell the truth, if it’s treated a bit like a two-part DJ set rather than an album to pontificate over, the burly big friendly giant has created a drum machine throbbing, synthesized concoction which is really pretty good.

The first step is to turn the way a traditional album is listened to on its head, the next is to free yourself of the normal expectations that come with that setup. This album doesn’t start with the barnstormers, slow it down, pick it up a bit and leave the almost-didn’t-make-its until the end. But then Harvest Festival is not like a DJ set either, even though it more resembles that type of format with its build up to a crescendo, before a clear break half way through for a swift change in musical direction.

The first three album tracks are rather like the warm up. On first listen they can easily be dismissed, but new single, Apple Bobbing, and Tinned Apricot are deep, slow burning house numbers with 80s synth touches – quite reminiscent of earlier decade James Zabiela work. The less favourable techno inspired Pear Shaped follows.

Building, the album climbs to Strawberry Jam with a bit of dubstep and drum machine before an all-out hands in the air moment is dropped. Go Bananas has cleverly worked off beat rhythms, a throbbing bassline and vocal hook, “And party and bullshit”.

The thing that makes Harvest Festival more palatable for an iPod listen is the fact that Goddard has successfully managed to break most of the tunes down into chunks to weave elements in and out and keep the interest. This is intelligent electro, not Calvin Harris.

With Half-Lime Oranges comes a break in pace and a signal for a more familiar, soulful Hot Chip direction and the clear stand out track of the album, Lemon & Lime (Home Lime) is up next. The loveable bear’s vocals are soothing and sleepily happy as he declares, “It feels like home time, it’s getting light and you know, I will get to you tonight”. That added to an almost two-step type beat and soft keyboards combine to make a really surprisingly stunning track.

Next is Tropical Punch – an Aphex Twin, Radiohead Kid A Idioteque track which you yearn to hear Thom Yorke’s vocals and lyrical profundity over the top of. Sour Grapes continues the slower pace and takes a vaguely similar road, but is a real journey of a track building to a sinister, church organ hook which is thoroughly consciousness-infiltrating.

Pineapple Chunk and Coconut Shy unfortunately sit in the background; perhaps because they do sound quite distant, unconnected and lacking in direction unlike the rest.

The fact Joe Goddard has made his own album really hammers home the realisation of just what an essential cog in the well-oiled Hot Chip machine he is. Harvest Festival is far from a nifty little side project. It might sound a bit unfinished in places but nevertheless is a really good example of funky, deep, electro which explores other branches under the dance umbrella, from dubstep to moody house, with even some touches of hip hop and Warp-label ambient techno.

I imagine he will suffer from comparisons with Hot Chip, which is fair enough because if no one is allowed to measure the quality of his solo work to his own band then what should be the yardstick? This does however trump his fellow band mate, Alexis Taylor’s first solo offering by a mile and whilst his tunes are clearly a ‘Chip’ (couldn’t resist it) off the old block, Joe Goddard has so much more to offer than expected, as does this album.

Februar erscheint. Und so sieht die Tracklist aus:

01 Thieves in the night
02 Hand me down your love
03 I feel better
04 One life stand
05 Brothers
06 Slush
07 Alley cats
08 We have love
09 Keep quiet
10 Take it in

Lissy Trullie.

Roll Over.

The Dismemberment Plan.

House of the rising sun שבוצע מאות פעמים אבל הכי מזוהה עם The Animals מ-1964.

The yardbirds.

EDIT: No, I did not sleep with him.

Con: He definitely just wanted to get in my pants.

Pro: I only wasted a handful of days on him.

Con: I feel like shit about it. And no one I’ve tried talking to about it understands why*. It’s all lectures and ‘everyone does it’ and ‘I completely understand, but….’ No, you very clearly do not understand. And there isn’t a ‘but.’

Pro: Hot Chip and The Klaxons are right there with me.

Con: Random keys on the right side of my ‘board have stopped working. No more plusses, equals signs, left-side brackets or up or down arrow key-using for me.

Pro: I bought an 8-inch, pink, sparkly Christmas tree today. Guess whose work cube is gettin’ some Christmas spunk à demain?

Peace out, The Hipster/The Clerk/Schnuckums/Dream Boat/Mike/Michael/Mikey/wtf else were we calling him?

*’You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, and we are all part of the same compost pile.’
Chuck Palahniuk | Fight Club

I very much need this to be true. Sometimes I don’t want to be a snowflake. I just want to be the same decaying organic matter as everyone else.
