Chicago-Style Steak Frank

Steak ‘n Shake has really been cooking up the menu additions recently that they have been running on promotion.  New toppings for their burgers (A1 sauce, guacamole, etc.) and now they are introducing gourmet hot dogs, or steak franks as they call them.  Options include Chicago-Style, Chili Cheese, Carolina Slaw and Southwest.  On a recent trip, I decided to give one of their steak franks a try.

What I Got:  Chicago-Style Steak Frank $2.99

As you can see from the picture, this frank includes mustard, diced onions, tomatoes, a pickle slice, peppers and the unique neon green sweet pickle relish that Chicago dogs are known for.

The frank on this thing was actually quite large and quite tasty.  I was expecting just a run of the mill hot dog, but I have to give Steak ‘n Shake credit, this one was actually good.  So, they were off to a good start.

Toppings-wise, I was also pleasantly surprised.  The sweet pickle relish was very sweet and as you can see there was a lot of it.  I’m a relish lover, so having this be plentiful on top of the frank was a very welcome addition.  All the other toppings were about what you would expect and they were fresh, but there was nothing special about them.

One thing that was missing from this frank and it was noticeable was the celery salt.  Most classic Chicago-Style dogs are served with that topping and I could definitely tell that taste was missing.  Also missing was the poppy seed bun, but that didn’t really bother me as much as the missing celery salt.

Would I Buy It Again?  No, I would not.  I had very low expectations of this going in and I will admit that it was a pleasant surprise but not pleasant enough to warrant me buying this particular frank again.  I would possibly try one of the other options if I found myself at a Steak ‘n Shake at some point, but I’ll be in no rush to go out and do that.

Uma das sensações na reportagem do Fantástico sobre a primeira semana com as finalistas do”Menina” foi o troca-troca de palavras feito pela mineira Nayane Teixeira. Em vez de falar outdoor, a jovem de 15 anos disse que queria estar em todos os “hot dogs” . Nayane disse que tudo não passou de um mal-entendido durante a gravação e diz que está levando numa boa a zoação. A culpa, segundo a mineira, foi de uma amiga que acompanhava as filmagens, feitas pouco antes de ela entrar na casa das Fantásticas.

“Minha amiga Isabela soprou de longe ‘hot dog’. Não estava escutando direito e acabei repetindo. Todo mundo olhou para mim, e só então eu vi que estava errado. Fiquei com vergonha na hora, mas foi um lapso. Acontece com todo mundo. Eu levo na brincadeira. Afinal, quem nunca pagou um mico?”, disse, rindo, Nayane.

Para mostrar que está bem tranquila sobre o assunto, a própria mineira deu a ideia de posar para fotos com um cachorro-quente improvisado nas mãos. “Esse é o meu verdadeiro outdoor”, brincou. Mas, na hora de descongelar a salsicha no forno de micro-ondas, nossa musa dos ‘hot dogs’ esqueceu um detalhe: o plástico da embalagem. Por pouco, a casa das Fantásticas não presencia um pequeno acidente. “Essa coisa de cachorro-quente só me dá dor de cabeça”, divertiu-se Nayane, após correr para desligar o forno.

Por que somos obrigados a abrir a página da internet e nos depararmos com isso?Alguém que leu a matéria acima, retirada do blog do fantástico, acreditou no que leu?Agora, após essa pérola, essa gafe, esse ABSURDO que a mocinha disse ao programa, ela ainda se aproveita da ocasião e tenta ser menina propaganda da salsicha.Apenas uma palavra : lastimável.O mais incrível e intrigante é tentar adivinhar o porquê da matéria ter ido ao ar na íntegra, ainda por cima com uma tiração de sarro da cara da garota.Pois uma pessoa que está se candidatando a algo não quer nem sonhar em ter uma gafe dessas no currículo.

É o nível cultural dos brasileiros, sendo que a mocinha fantástica ainda quer colocar a culpa na amiga que “soprou” de longe a palavra que ela falou.Daqui a pouco estarei falando sobre “abobrinha”, se alguém me falar de longe “cenoura”, talvez eu escreva.

Alguém acha que ela ganha alguma coisa?Na minha opinião ela só ganha umas fotos nos “outdoores” comendo “hot dogs”.

Isso porque eu nem cheguei no “fight” das repórteres da Globo e da record na disputa por uma entrevista.Em breve, aguardem….

This week’s theme was a toughie: SONGS TO MAKE SANDWICHES TO was inspired by a forum on music mag Word’s site. While Word readers couldn’t take the subject seriously I figured there was room for someone who did. And who better than little ol’ obsessive me? So sandwiches it was, but I made it easier by also including hamburgers, hot-dogs and the like. I even allowed songs about stuff that goes into a sandwich, like honey, tomatoes, chicken. Still I suffered some abuse. Impossible, you emailed. Why not make it broader and include all food pleaded Lynden. Crap theme, too hard, moaned Zoe. Oh you listeners of little faith.

We opened with a novelty song: SANDWICHES ARE BEAUTIFUL from Bob King, but in case you’re worried about this setting a tone for the rest of the show, be assured – rockers, r&b artists and especially the alternative pop singers all delivered some edgy songs on sandwiches.

Do you know where the word sandwich was born?  London. 1762. An English nobleman, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich was too busy gambling to stop for a meal even though he was hungry for some food. The legend goes that he ordered a waiter to bring him roast-beef between two slices of bread. The Earl was able to continue his gambling while eating his snack; and from that incident, we have inherited the fast-food product that we now know as the sandwich.

Today, our favourite version of meat between bread is called a hamburger. So we got the show rolling with the Whitlams’ brilliant  I MAKE HAMBURGERS followed by The Flaming Lips and SHE DON’T USE JELLY. New York based, Japanese duo Cibo Matto were next with LE PAIN PERDU. The name of the band is Italian for crazy food and the title of the song is French for Toast. The lyrics in their songs are all primarily concerned with food, well seemingly anyway, and I liked them so much I also played another of their tunes, KNOW YOUR CHICKEN later in the program. Here’s the crazy video clip of that track and, although he doesn’t appear in the clip, that’s Sean Lennon on bass.

Two items that elevate ordinary old toast to dessert status are marmalade and honey. So any excuse to play Patti Labelle’s LADY MARMALADE and Aretha Franklin’s HONEY and I’m there. Yum yum.

Louis Jordan loves his BEANS AND CORNBREAD while Lil Johnson pushes metaphor to it’s limits with SAM THE HOT DOG MAN. Neil Young is partial to TUPELO HONEY on his sandwich, while  Jimmy Buffet can’t stop singing about a CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE.

When it comes to cheeseburgers, whether we like it or not, the burger with the highest profile has got to be MacDonald’s. Hell, there was a whole conversation about their burgers in the film PULP FICTION. Ah yes, how could we not include that iconic scene where John Travolta and Samuel Jackson discuss the merits of the French McDonald’s – ROYALE WITH CHEESE?

Two tunes that pay homage to the fact that a good cuppa is needed to wash down a sandwich or piece of toast were next.  Canadian Jeff Healey, gave Gertrude Lawrence’s A CUP OF COFFEE, A SANDWICH, AND YOU a burl and  then it was TOAST AND MARMALADE FOR TEA, a nice piece of bubblegum from the band Tin Tin.

Kaiser Cheifs reminded us of that vital sandwich ingredient – tomatoes –   with TOMATO IN THE RAIN. And then it was the hilarious TOAST from Paul Young and the Streetband. Classic. Take a look at this clip from 1978.

In Mexican cuisine, a sandwich is either a taco or a burrito. Beck didn’t sound too happy when he sang SATAN GAVE ME A TACO. It seems taking delivery of that snack had all kinds of repercussions. Meanwhile, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention went CRUISING FOR BURGERS. As you do.

All girl group Care Bears on Fire let loose with the precautionary BARBIE EAT A SANDWICH. Nice animated clip too. Check it out:

Let’s talk chicken. Here’s a question: What’s a chicken sandwich without MAYONNAISE? Smashing Pumpkins offered up a track dedicated to the condiment of all condiments. Mmmmm mmmmm: chicken, lettuce and mayo on white bread – can’t get better than that. The Detroit Grand Pubahs reinforced the fact that all songs, but especially those about food, are really about sex. The tune? The very cheeky WE CAN MAKE SANDWICHES. Here we go: another crazy video clip:

Out of the disco and out on the road: Little Feat are sang all about HAMBURGER MIDNIGHT and then John Mellencamp reckons that life is like choosing between HOTDOGS AND HAMBURGERS, (not sure what he’s getting at there).

Comedian Mitch Hedberg does a great skit on sandwiches and I particularly liked the bit about the Club Sandwich. We followed that with a dangerous piece of radio: Metal band Psychostick with THIS IS NOT A SONG, IT’S A SANDWICH!

After Psychostick we needed to calm down and what better way than with Feist and a song about the calming qualities of HONEY? You wouldn’t exactly call The Sugarcubes, (with Bjork), a calming influence. They can’t decide what to put on their sandwich and are threatening to EAT THE MENU. Check out the very young Bjork and a fabulous floating burger, all in one clip!

Antes do vídeo eu quero só levantar um tópico, o erro realmente foi dela? Afinal, se as apresentações das modelos foram gravadas, provavelmente os editores poderiam sim ter cortado essa parte da entrevista. Mais uma vez ( a  outra vez foi a da senhora que disse que ficou “toda babada”, pesquisem que vcs irão lembrar) alguma pessoas que trabalham na Rede Globo, mostraram falta de caráter e oportunismo. Fico chateado ao ver que ao invés de abrir oportunidades esse programa está na verdade destruindo a imagem dessas garotas…

Então fica a pergunta: De quem foi o erro?

Ps: mas nem por isso vou deixar de assistir TV Globinho aos feriados =D.

Diz que uma menina  – Nayane – do novo concurso de modelo que eu não acompanho (menina fantástica), hehe, falou que queria estar em todos os ‘hot-dogs’ ao invés de ‘outdoors’.

Acontece! Eu sempre embolo as palavras quando tô falando rápido. E não é só isso – eu confundo Obama com Osama, o que tem graaaaande diferença ideológica, né não? haha E tive a pachorra de falar isso na sala de aula, tá, Nayane? E eu também confundi ‘atirador de elite’ com ‘franco atirador’ hahaha, o que fez R. morrer de vergonha de mim em plena aula de cultura alemã. E eu só tive um ataque de riso, porque, claro, não estou sendo filmada.

Aí, lá veio a patrulha pasqualina detonando a pobre da menina. Só que lá no site da globo, há um comentário meio curioso, pedindo à menina que estude mais, pois dia 20 é dia da raça negra e que ela estaria desapontando a raça e dando motivos para falar mal dos negros. Ai, gente, um pouco menos, vai! Se é uma loira falando, é porque é loira burra, se é negra, é porque é negra. Às vezes, um charuto é só um charuto.

Sem comentários pra não estragar a pérola dessa moça que está concorrendo ao concurso Garota Fantástico…

Not a nice night for The Monster

Okay, so maybe my prediction of the Leafs as a seventh-to-10th place finisher was a bit premature. After grabbing points in seven straight, Toronto lost its third in a row last night — a game I took in at the ACC (my second ever!) — 5-2 to Joel Bydevaate’s Calgary Flames. That, after falling 3-2 in Chicago on Friday.

First off, it was cool to check out the game, but when the highlight of the night was the foot-long pizza hot dog I ate…well, then that doesn’t say much for the Leafs (although to their credit, the hot dog was off the hook). The Monster gave up a pair of ugly goals to Jarome Iginla and Eric Nystrom before the two-minute mark of the first and was pulled after Dustin Boyd made it 3-1 just before the midway point of the period. Francois Beauchemin scored between and Matt Stajan added one in the second to cut it to 3-2, but Iginla and Jay Bouwmeester scored in the third to wrap it up.

The Leafs actually ended up outshooting Calgary 40-22 (including 20-4 in the second alone), and really, none of those 22 Flamer shots were much in the way of scoring chances. Gustavsson was a first period trainwreck and Vesa Toskala didn’t particularly stand out, mainly because he wasn’t really tested until the third (when he failed).

Anyway, the loss drops the Leafs to 3-10-5, which is still better than Carolina, at least. They’re in action next Tuesday in Ottawa.

I would love to know exactly how this picture came into being. What do you think was going through her head? It looks like there are several different types of sausages here. I looked around a little and I’m guessing that the Zion refers to the Kosher Zion Sausage Company of Chicago, Illinois. It’s no longer around…so maybe the mixture of a swimsuit clad gal draped and crowned in sausages doesn’t provoke people to eat.

From what I can gather they were also associated with the Sinai Kosher Sausage Corporation which was bought out by the Best Kosher Foods Corporation (in 1983) and is still operating in Chicago. The only other thing I found was this matchbook. So in honor of this girls bravdo why not go out and eat a Best Kosher link today.

Update: Looks like Best’s Kosher was bought by Sara Lee Corporation at some point and is no longer producing their products. I guess we’re out of luck here…maybe you could grab some Jimmy Dean links, they’re a product of Sara Lee….I don’t  know, I’m stretching here.

Well, this week was a long one. This Tuesday, I had forgotten to bring my clothes for Cross Country practice. However, the next day, I came in – Wednesday (though it’s supposed to be Tuesdays and Thursdays). The meet was nice: I came out 99th out of a 164 people. Not as amazing as before.

Well, anyway – I don’t remember quite what day (apparently I have Alzheimer and absolutely no sense of division of time), but this week, I got rejected. Yes – once. I don’t know what the hell it is, but it seems that I have the tendency to piss someone off or hurt them without noticing it. It is some abominable curse the tooth fairy has given me for not giving her any of my teeth: with a wave of her wand, she made it so my mouth would work inconspicuously against me.

But, as always, Abe’s anger had fled out. And I’m glad. I don’t like seeing him hurt, or me feeling like a total asshole.

See, today I had the TACHS test, and it was the easiest thing I had ever done (can’t wait for the results), especially comparatively juxtaposed with the SHSAT (can’t wait for those results either). I wasn’t able to finish either the Math section and the first two parts of the Abilities section, though. So I’m totally sucking right there.  I fail at math, so I put these types of answers instead, of course:

But who the hell cares? Not that it’s not important. But it’s not like they’re going to make me do it again just because I fail.

They’re not that considerate. They could care less. They want results relative to time. That, apparently, is the catch.

The language parts were easy – easy as hell (though hell is actually a difficult troubling stressful enclosed phobia-inducing rape-orgiastic nightmare, which is just slightly to the contrary).

And, no. My name isn’t Peter.

After the test, we went on this absurd trip – absurd because it was a trip on a ferry boat from Manhattan to Staten Island back to Manhattan – real absurd, to me. I wouldn’t waste money for it. All I did was eat and stand/sit on a boat and then go back home. Of course, the trip wasn’t too bad – but only because of the food and the friends I was with (like kawaii-pie Abe, who I could talk to quite easily). I really wanted to touch him, but apparently he has some restraining orders his hands are enforcing. They push me away, in general, when I try to hug him. I wish I could.

But of course, it seems we’re still in the “masculinity” box, huh? Real fancy. I want to admit my sexuality without such ramifications of getting out of the box! Sometimes I feel everyone is stuck in the masculinity box.

But, anyway, yeah. I still had a great time! With him, other people, myself, one of my teachers, and just with the sexy food on my plate.

Though, I didn’t eat hot gods. What I ate was a cheeseburger, a jelly-filled doughnut, and some fruit punch.

*Note: This post had been in DRAFT mode since the second day of school. For whatever reason I never came back to finish writing it out and add pictures…until today…which is so close to end of the semester…

After surviving the very first day of teaching high school, I was planning on resting and getting ready for the second day of teaching high school…then I heard that Asia Dog was in town, and that changed everything! Asia Dog is just like JapaDog in Vancouver (my favorite city in the world – sorry LA). Basically, it is a regular hot dog, but with “asian inspired toppings”. Sounds like something I would enjoy!

How could I miss this one night only event? So off we went to Culver City to find Bigfoot West. I honestly was not expecting to see the crowd that had gathered. There were people everywhere just waiting to get their Asia Dog!

The set up was really quite simple. Two BBQ’s, 5 or 6 people cooking and preparing, 1 person taking orders…everything was running very smoothly!

All of the hot dogs are named after friends and family of the owners, which I thought was pretty cool. Here is what I think was the Mel & Steve:

And this is what I ate! It was called Vinh (hey I have a friend named Vinh too) and it was a Banh Mi style hot dog. It was FANTASTIC! Does anyone know where I can currently get a Banh Mi hot dog in LA? I’m seriously craving one! I was really lucky to get one of the last Banh Mi hot dogs that night because right after I placed my order they sold out! They ended up selling out of most toppings that day!

Asia Dog is on Twitter, and out an about in NYC. I haven’t heard anything about plans to come back to the City of Angels anytime soon.

My Chemical Romance.

Oh man.

It’s 2004 and music sucks. The reins of popular culture are firmly in the grasp of the likes of Avril Lavigne, Green Day, and Maroon 5. High school is over, but for others it was just starting, which explains why shitty music still reigns supreme.

Out of nowhere, a mess of a band called “My Chemical Romance” bursts into everyone’s ears with the sinfully catchy “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” and the pop-punk-poop world is immediately shifted.

I like this band, I do, at least in principle. I’m amazed when bands with such young embers find the lifesource of a hit song and tap into it. They aren’t bad musicians, by any means, but they are better than most of their ilk, I’d say.

They managed to put out three albums in a relatively short period of time, going from ‘Who?” to “OH MY GOD!” to “Enough already” in just a few years. The first was subtle, promising, but ultimately amateur. The second, and most popular, cemented their place in their genre of choice.

Their third album is the one I’ll be discussing, as it’s the next in line of albums to leave my domain.

A concept album is a tough thing to create. It takes foresight, it takes nuance, and it collapses the second the narrative string gets cut in order to make time for a catchy single. “The Black Parade” is not a bad album, and for their age, it’s promising to think that bands of this generation understand their roots when making new tunes. But knowing where ya came from doesn’t mean just doing that will suffice.

Realize that, as a musician, every single thought you have that even feels remotely unique…is not. It’s been thought up a thousand times by a thousand people, some better than you and some not. So going for the safe route of picking the best part of your favorite bands growing up and duplicating the hooks and octaves to achieve the same feeling is full of fail.

The ballad “Cancer” sounds like REO fucking Speedwagon. We don’t need another REO Speedwagon. One was enough.

The Queen sound, with a Brian May impression for each guitar solo. The Pink Floyd fan in me ached at the blatant and watered down parts of “The Wall” that starts the album.

The album does have high spots, mostly in the areas where the high-ideas took a step down and the amps took a step up. When they stick to what they are good at, they represent all the good things said about them.

Seeing as how I’m not really buying albums anymore, I think I’m done with this band on an album basis, although a live performance could win me over.
