Hi All,

You may have noticed that the images for the “Rockers & Revheads” post are no longer being displayed.

This is a temporary issue involving the free Flickr photo archive account that I have linked to the website. Unfortunately it seems to be free … only for a certain amount of images.

As a donation to the club I will be footing the $50 charge in order to extend access to an unlimited account for a period of 2 years.

As I did not specify an age for the StreetRatzClub  Flickr account this has now caused problems regarding payment in the way that the hosting site does not believe that “StreetRatzClub” is over 18 and able to enter credit card details.

I have submitted an enquiry to have this fixed and am now awaiting return confirmation from Flickr/Yahoo Customer Support.

Hopefully, this will be fixed shortly.

Hi All,

Last weekend I braved the 40°c+  heat to watch the old school tin charge down the black top at Eastern Creek.

There was a good turn out of cars seeing plenty of action over multiple categories. There wasnt many spectators which made it easy to find good real estate to set up camp.

The pop tent was an absolute godsend along with copious amounts of sunscreen and 4 litres of water.

Hot was an understatement! There was a strong breeze blowing down the track yet it was like holding a hair dryer to your face…   

There were more cars there than I had time to take pictures of and snapshots were done in small stints  so as to not get roasted in the process.

I managed to brave the sun, sweat and smell (of the rubbish dump next door) to bring you some great photos.

Wes Rice , Barons member, Still has only pickles in his shop fridge. In fact he has more than he had the other day. So I guess his cool Hot Rod Club name of pickles is going to stick. His 41 Chevy Hot Rod pick up is green.

I collect old Hot Rod photos, scan them and then give them back. Last saturday at Patty’s Burger Time ,Dave Sorenson brought me these great photos he took back in 1959 .These were Hot Rods that hung out at Howy’s gas station where he worked. The 35 belonged to Bob and the 34 to Jepson. The single finger salute is marked DEBENDINER , 49   Merc. I wish I more of that custom Merc. Stay tuned for the 1936 3 window taken in 1962.

Earlier this week we stopped by Walden Speed Shop to observe what makes these world-class metalcrafters tick. Greeting us at the entrance were a beautiful ‘27 T-Bucket with a Buick Nailhead 425 and a partially built ‘36 Ford smuggling an L92 crate motor between its bulging fenders. 1952 Mercury. This was my favourite car on the cruise, I love the big ‘ol sleds and the details on this just make it perfect IMO. Perfect colour, pinstriping, gleaming brightwork, ground scraping ride height and whitewalls on red steels.

I was just flicking through some old pics and came across some I took at Beach Hop 2008. For those outside of NZ/Aus, Beach Hop is a 5 day festival of Nostalgia, Hot rods and customs, music and culture of the 50s and 60s. And it is as great as it sounds.

Check this rod out, it gives whole new meaning to laying frame as it picks the wheels up off the ground. Warning/bonus: Pics are HUGE + more after jump.

Every car-guy has a “garage buddy,”  a guy that you hang out with and do stuff on the car with..even when you can probably do it yourself.  It just makes it more fun to talk cars, women, politics, etc., while you’re in the garage swinging a wrench.

I have a garage buddy named Steve.   Now, it took a while for me and him to become garage buddies.  This doesn’t happen overnight.

First I had to get to know him (he worked with my wife).  Seemed like a nice guy and really knew his cars, plus he is always willing to waste hours waxing poetic about how we would run GM, how 400hp should be the minimum for any kind of performance car, etc., ..you know: the IMPORTANT stuff!   Passes that test..check.

Then I had to be around him..you know try him out.  This is my garage after all…don’t want any whiners, cryers, goofballs or worse hanging in there with me.  He likes scotch (so do I).  He has a roller chest full of Craftsmen tools…hmmm.   (I know this sounds like I’m considering him for a date, but bear with me.)   He also has an almost encyclopedic mind about the cars he loves AND he’s an engineer.  This has potential.

So a few informal get-togethers and cigars later..I like this guy.  Plus he talks like an Air Traffic Controller..which he was, so there’s another thing we can discuss (he and I are both frustrated pilots-to-be).

Ok, he shares the views, loves the smell of carb cleaner and WD-40 and the magic of Pontiac 8 lug wheels with cast-in brake drum.  So far, so good.  Then, he mentions he reads car mags..a lot of them.  Challenge accepted, pal:

So I claim victory but then, God love him, when my funds went dry for a while..I had to reduce my monthly reading material to just Hot Rod, Car Craft, Rod and Custom and Auto Restorer, but Steve says, “Hey, I read them but don’t save them..I’ll bundle them up and bring them to ‘garage day.’

Sold!  New garage buddy!  Things were stagnant for 2 years when he moved to California but I’m hoping we can try for a semi-annual event now that’s he back here in Georgia.

Now, it wasn’t all beer and donuts…there WERE some issues.

1. He didn’t own or drive a Corvette  (we overcame that as I counseled him and made him drive the wife’s convertible.  Sold.  He got one the following month.)
2. For the longest time, he’d be mentioning “Bob”  (“I’ll get Bob.”  Where’s Bob?”  “Lemme pull Bob over here.” )  I thought he might have cracked or maybe he had an “invisible friend” that I better know about (keep a phone handy..that kind of thing), so over about 6 scotches and a cigar I asked him.  “Oh, that’s what I call a jack.  Anyone can call them jack, I call it “bob.”   Took a while to get used to that one but since he usually brought the cigars..he wants to call my jacks/his jack “Bob” ..so be it.  (I have 4 so I never asked him how he would tell them apart…)
3. Alright, I’m going to sound old but I wear safety glasses (you should too) and mechanics’ gloves.  Ok, the gloves are cool but I also can’t stand grinding my hands clean enough to get my contacts in, so I use gloves.   Steve didn’t.  I bought him a pair of gloves and safety goggles.  “Don’t use ‘em..I got my eyeglasses on, I’ll be fine.”  There’s another story to this which I’ll put up later..but he uses them…now.
4. Getting used to the way other people work is a big deal..even if you are only doing some simple maintenance on the car.  After a marathon oil-change/lube/tire rotation on 4 cars (his and 3 of mine), we were a little dirty.  On the counter was a tin of wheel bearing grease and my GOJO hand cleaner.  I dipped into the Gojo but Steve reaches in for a big wad of wheel bearing lube and really starts working it in.  “Hmm,” I thought to myself, “Maybe he has found some way of getting the undercar dirt off his skin without scrubbing it raw with a nail brush.”  He looks at me and says “What the hell am I using to clean up with??  What is this..bearing lube??  Maybe I better leave my glasses on next time.”  I laugh, “I wondered what the hell you were doing!”
5. There was also the time we were going to put a cat-back exhaust on his car.  We’re going to use my Kwik-Lift so he comes to my house.  He spent the entire morning putting the entire system together in the back of the car and taking it apart so he would know how it went together before he got to my house.  Hello…where’s the fun of that..and what, you couldn’t wait??

We still talk on the phone;  we recap the garage adventures and cackle while sip a scotch or two and solve the world’s problems.

Miss the “therapy sessions” in the garage.  I moved a fridge out there so we wouldn’t have to walk far for the cold ones or ice for the scotch.  Then you have to go and move to California!  Then you come back and live 4 hours away.   Load up the Corvette and buzz up here…we’re going to chop the top on the Corvair soon!

Since the last time I checked in here we have been very busy. We have stared the re-wiring of the car, installed the new heater / AC set up from Southern Air. We installed a new electric windshield wiper motor from Newport engineering. We shaved the doors and the trunk and installed new solenoids. We also add new gauges installed a Captain Morgan bottle as our washer fluid bottle. One of the biggest projects was designing and building the bracket for the AC compressor. We also added the AC / Heat switches into the dash panel.  Below are a few pics……..

1954 Mercury Woodie  Monterey 4-door 8 passenger station wagon. Highlights of model year was new overhead valve “Y-Block” eight replacing Ford’s venerable flathead eight. Ball joint suspension was also new. 11,656 were produced. The wagon has been garaged for the last 20 years still has the y-block, but no tranny. There is rust in the normal places drop me a line if interested. $3000.00 OBO

I was bench racing at Wes Rice’s shop today and was about to leave as all he had in his fridge were pickles( Read NO BEER) When the subject of the Barons car club came up ,and a friend of Wes’s said he had been a Baron. With only a few members in the early 50’s I am always amazed when I find another. Bill Stanley drove a blue 1948 Dodge back then and a 1963 Chevy pickup now. All OB, originall BARONS are automatically Barons’ today, So a big welcome to Bill. He gave  me names of several more “OLD Barons” I will be contacting. As soon as Bill gets me some pics of his Barons ride I will get them posted. Then Wes , who I have known since high school asked how do you become a Baron.I said not by having only pickles in the fridge. He promised to mend his ways.

Rumble master Jimmy the T, please add his shop to the shop tour rumble as he assured me there will be BEER in the fridge. Please welcome Wes as our newest member, he drives a 1941 Chevy pickup hot rod, he built years ago. You have seen him at Patty’s Burger Time

Yes that is Wes and yes I did invite him in , But check out that V/8 barbecue. Larry I think Wes should bring the barbecue to your rumble this spring.

This is my bud Zander’s 68′ Pontiac Firebird. His brother bought it as a rolling shell on eBay earlier this year. Plans changed for his brother, so Zander took on the project himself. As soon as it was in his possession the restoration process began. The very first thing he did was strip the car down, and had his mechanic fabricate a rotisserie to hold the car up. He took the car up to Indy to have all the surface rust removed in some chemicals. He found a 455 Longblock from a 75′ Grand Prix, ordered a Tremec 5 Speed Transmission, CCW Classics Wheels/Tires, Heidts Front Suspension, Strange Engineering Rear End (373 Gears), Wilwood 4 Piston Calipers, Wilwood 11″ Rotors, QA1 Coilovers, and hes replacing any OEM parts that requires it. He’s planning on painting it Lambo Grey, and is shitting for 450-500HP N/A. Hes shooting for the car to be done by early 2010 (Jan-Feb). Possibly look out for more updates on the ride!
