If you have driven a vehicle equipped with the Ford Sync Technology– then you’re probably well aware that it effortlessly syncs up your phones, mp3 players and other gadgets via Bluetooth or USB input. Now how about this for a little bonus: Internet. Yep. Not a misprint — I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T.

That’s right, internet wherever you may go and internet wherever you are… internet high …. internet low … internet at home … and now internet on the go… just as long as you have a 3G compatible wi-fi card (note: monthly fees might go with it). The Sync, version 2.0, will have internet compatibility integrated into its USB ports. So on top of all of the cool things the Sync already does (like transmitting your phone calls though vehicles speakers) your passengers can now surf the waves of the digital age in your car on their labtops as you cruise down the highways and byways — just remember to keep your eyes on the road when one of your kids shouts out, “Check out this hilarious video on YouTube!!!”

What’s the coolest thing about all this? Ford isn’t charging anything to use the added feature, it’s a genuinely helpful and beneficial feature that Ford would prefer you have on top of what the SYNC can already offer you. But before you take your portable cafe for a marathon of Pandora and Facebook, just remember that you must have the 3G service equipped on your laptop or mobile device to connect to the Sync’s router.

FORD SYNC GOES WIFI TURNING CAR INTO MOBILE INTERNET HOT SPOT FOR PASSENGERS WHILE ON THE GO! Next-g

FORD SYNC GOES WIFI TURNING CAR INTO MOBILE INTERNET HOT SPOT FOR PASSENGERS WHILE ON THE GO!

Next-generation SYNC® system to incorporate in-car WiFi system powered by customer’s USB mobile broadband modem, turning entire car into hot spot.

New capability will be standard on select SYNC-equipped vehicles with no additional hardware or subscriptions required beyond the user-supplied mobile broadband modem.

Standard WiFi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) security protocols will be in force, and only owner-permitted devices will be able to access the network, helping ensure secure, robust connectivity for in-car users Ford Motor Company will turn vehicles into rolling WiFi hot spots when it introduces the second generation of its popular SYNC® in-car connectivity system next year. Inserting an owner’s compatible USB mobile broadband modem – sometimes called an “air card” – into SYNC’s USB port will produce a secure wireless connection that will be broadcast throughout the vehicle, allowing passengers with WiFi-enabled mobile devices to access the Internet anywhere the broadband modem receives connectivity.

“While you’re driving to grandma’s house, your spouse can be finishing the holiday shopping and the kids can be chatting with friends and updating their Facebook profiles,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “And you’re not paying for yet another mobile subscription or piece of hardware because Ford will let you use technology you already have.”

Studies by the Consumer Electronics Association show that as many as 77 million adults make up the so-called technology enthusiast drivers population, more than half of whom express the desire for a connected communications and information system in their vehicles. Even among the general population, more than one third of Americans would be interested in the ability to check email and access Web sites in their vehicles.

Upgradeable and secure The USB port provided by SYNC lets owners leverage a variety of devices, including the mobile broadband modem. And through simple software updates, SYNC can be adapted to connect with the latest devices.

“The speeds with which technology is evolving, particularly on the wireless front, makes obsolescence a real problem,” said Doug VanDagens, director of Ford’s Connected Services Solutions Organization. “We’ve solved that problem by making SYNC work with just about any technology you plug into it. By leveraging a user’s existing hardware, which can be upgraded independent of SYNC, we’ve helped ensure ‘forward compatibility’ with whatever connectivity technology comes next.”

The SYNC WiFi capability is a simple solution for bringing internet into the vehicle, versus competitive systems on the market. Being factory-installed, the hardware is seamlessly integrated into the vehicle, whereas competitor’s systems are dealer-installed and require a bulky bolt-in receiver and transmitter that take up cabin space. Also, competitive systems cost approximately $500 for equipment and installation, not to mention the monthly subscription fee.

“Using SYNC with existing mobile devices helps Ford provide the most value, the most flexibility and the most convenience for owners,” said Fields. “Constant connectivity is becoming a routine part of our customers’ lives, and we’re making existing technology more accessible without adding costs: That’s the kind of value Ford drivers have learned to expect.”

Using the SYNC WiFi system, a signal will be broadcast throughout the vehicle. Default security is set to WiFi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), requiring users to enter a randomly chosen password to connect to the Internet. When SYNC sees a new WiFi device for the first time, the driver must specifically allow that device to connect, preventing unauthorized users from “piggybacking” on the SYNC-provided signal.

The Times report | The first decision of Benson’s that caused difficulty was an Australian appeal fo

The Times report | The first decision of Benson’s that caused difficulty was an Australian appeal for caught behind against Shivnarine Chanderpaul. He was on 38 and given not out by Benson, a verdict that was upheld by Asad Rauf, the TV official. This led to a long-running inquisition by Ponting, who made several demands of match officials during the day for the reasons behind the not-out verdict. Ponting said later: “The new system was meant to stop this sort of thing happening but it didn’t.”

The incident understood to have most upset Benson was when Chanderpaul was later given out caught behind for 62 after Australia had again asked for a referral. Benson had given Chanderpaul not out but Rauf overturned his decision, although the evidence for doing this was unclear. Replays provided little evidence to suggest Chanderpaul’s bat had made contact with ball, with any noise detected appearing to be caused by bat hitting pad, but the Pakistani official gave Chanderpaul out anyway. One Australian newspaper reported that Chanderpaul had been “crucified”.

David Richardson, the ICC’s general manager | “Vintcent van der Bijl, our umpires manager, has been speaking to him but I know Mark has a problem with his heart. He was anxious about it. It was worrying him.”

Snicko and HotSpot technologies: When used in combination can determine the truth in most of the situations. No doubt about it. Technology should be used with a good human brain to analyse it. No matter what technology we use.. if the umpire dont use a good brain to analyse it, the whole new system will break down.

Hawk-Eye: I agree that the 3d-tracking system used by TV channels for LBW decisions have an angle of guess-work in it, but even if it is a guess-work.. the system is very consistent.. not like human umpire.. who considers how FAT is batsman’s STATS.. I dont understand why ICC cant use FULL HAWK-EYE for decision makings ? Why stop playing the tapes when it hits batsman’s pad.. why include the umpire and his ‘inconsistent’ guesses ? Why not play the tape full and give the batsman OUT if HAWK-EYE says ball is hitting [or even touching] any of the 3 stumps ?

Umpires and FAT STATS: India lost its last test series in Sri Lanka thanks to referral system where none of its GREATS got the benefit from the umpires.. as referrals kept on GIVING THEM OUT.. ignoring their FAT STATS.

Bigness of small decisions : Other day, Sehwag went on to score 293, but he was clearly LBW in his 30s.. but umpire gave the benefit of doubt [BOD] to the batsman. That combined with the fact that T.Dilshan [6 centuries in 2009] of Sri Lanka was given out recklessly in both innings of the test match [he was clearly eligible for BOD on both occasions] tilted the result in India’s favor.

by Glenn Fleishman, Macworld.com We’re all so accustomed to having Internet access in so many places

by Glenn Fleishman, Macworld.com

We’re all so accustomed to having Internet access in so many places—at home, at the office, at airports, at coffee shops—that it can be infuriating to travel and find yourself with low-speed service or none at all.

Fortunately, there are six good ways to make sure you—and anyone traveling with you—can can access the Internet using your laptop’s built-in wireless networking, even when you’re nowhere near a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Note: Two of these options—cell phone tethering and using a 3G adapter—connect a laptop to the Net and then share that connection from the laptop.

To set up that sharing, first establish the Net connection to the laptop. Then open the Sharing preference pane (System Preferences -> Sharing) and select Internet Sharing. (Don’t check its box yet.) From the Share Your Connection From drop-down menu, choose the active Internet connection. In the To Computers Using list, check the AirPort box. If you want to password-protect the connection you’re sharing (an advisable thing to do), click AirPort Options and set it there. Finally, check the box next to Internet Sharing to turn sharing on. You may need to repeat these steps each time you enable the connection.

AirPort Express in a hotel room The AirPort Express () is a portable powerhouse of a base station. In hotel rooms that have only wired Ethernet for Internet access, plugging an Express into that wired connection not only lets you work on your laptop from anywhere in the room; it also lets you share that connection with other devices that have Wi-Fi but no Ethernet (such as an iPhone) and with family members or colleagues. Apple says the AirPort Express can support up to ten simultaneous Wi-Fi connections. You may first need to connect your laptop via Ethernet to register or activate the room’s connection, then plug in the AirPort Express. Make sure to activate WPA2 Personal encryption so your shared connection isn’t accessible to just anyone.

Tethering with your cell phone Tethering services for cell phones let you turn the mobile device into a modem. The phone connects to the Net over a 2.5G or 3G network; you then connect your laptop to the phone via Bluetooth or USB—voila, you’re online. You can then use your laptop as a base station to share that connection via Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn’t yet offer tethering in the United States; AT&T promises that it’s coming. If you’re using another phone, check with your cell provider. Some phones may let you tether, but the provider might slap expensive transfer fees on top of whatever data plan you already pay for.

Make your phone a hotspot A small but growing number of mobile phones have both 3G and Wi-Fi. With the right software, you can turn such phones into hotspots. Joiku’s JoikuSpot Light(free) and JoikuSpot Premium (€15) work on the Symbian S60 smartphone platform. The Light version supports the HTTP protocol alone, so the only thing you can do with it is surf the Web; the Premium version supports all Internet protocols. WalkingHotSpot ($25) works with Symbian S60 as well as many Windows Mobile phones. As with tethering, check with your carrier about extra data fees.

3G adapter for your laptop AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless all offer Mac OS X drivers for a variety of 3G modems, which connect your laptop to the net over 3G data networks; many of those modems connect via the USB port, so they’ll work with any Mac portable. Unfortunately, that access comes at a high price: service plans typically cost $60 a month, with a two-year commitment and a usage limit of 5GB per month (combined uploads and downloads). (Cheaper plans, if a carrier offers them, include ludicrously small amounts of monthly use.)

A USB modem may be free with your contract, but it may cost as much as $150 to $250 without one. (If you purchase your modem up front, T-Mobile lets you pay its monthly data rate without a contract.) Fortunately, such modems can be swapped among nearly any Mac or Windows system. You can typically, but not always, share the resulting 3G service via Wi-Fi; some drivers might prevent it.

3G as you go Virgin Mobile (now owned by Sprint Nextel) has a pay-by-the-byte 3G plan. TheBroadband2Go USB modem costs $99; you then buy blocks of usage (in megabytes or gigabytes) as you need them. Pricing starts at $10 for 100 MB (must be used within 10 days) up to $60 for 1 GB (expires in 30 days). For those who travel and need access less frequently, this plan makes great sense. As with other 3G adapters, you can share your Virgin Mobile access via Wi-Fi, too.

3G Wi-Fi router The Novatel MiFi 2200 () isn’t the first hardware to combine 3G data access with a wireless router in one box. But such gateways—the Kyocera KR2, for example—have typically been the size of regular desktop routers. The MiFi, by contrast, can fit in your pocket. It allows up to five simultaneous connections and has an internal rechargable battery, so it can continue to provide that access even you’re away from a power outlet.

The MiFi is sold by Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel. Both firms charge $100 for it (after rebates, with a contract). Verizon offers data plans (with a two-year contract) for $40 for 250MB per month or $60 for 5GB per month. Sprint Nextel only offers a $60 plan (for 5GB per month, with a two-year contract). The MiFi can be purchased separately for about $250 and used with Verizon’s network at a $15-per-day rate for on-demand usage.

Every time I go “home” to San Diego I have to at least stop at one of my favorite spots. Ok, well this spot happens to be on the list of “To Do’s” every trip. Again on this recent trip I went and rekindled my love with Extraordinary Desserts.

Extraordinary Desserts

Extraordinary Desserts has two locations to choose from. Although they are very different from each other they are close in proximity. I tend to visit the Hillcrest location because it has a more “homey” feel and is quieter. I have been to the other one located in Little Italy and it is more of a restaurant with food options and a modern warehouse feel.

If you love sweets then you are in for a treat! Extraordinary Desserts not only has the best dessert I have ever tried, but also a great selection of teas, coffee and other drinks. I make it a point to always try a new combination. I had “Falling in Love” tea, which I fell in love with! Hahaha! No, but really it was amazing!

Yummy!

Another great thing about this place is that it’s the perfect spot to go in a small group, order a bunch of different goodies and share them family style. Afterall, you are given a generous slice/piece of heaven soooo why not share!

I do have to say the funny thing about this place is that there is always a long line as it gets later in the night so if you’re looking to grab a table, make sure you get there early. Who knows maybe I’ll see you there!

Kemaren gue bener-bener sibuk sampe gak sempet approach.

Mana ujan mendung. Beh mana ada hot spot hare gene… brrr ..

Sebenernya sih klo niat bisa aja approach di pinggir jalan tapi apa gak aneh aja yah rasanya? hmm..

Biasa lah masih level dibawah rata-rata nih.

Oh ya kemaren juga gue udah print abis-abisan file kompilasi xRon 2007 sama ebook Direct Approach manual. Biar hemat gue akalin satu lembar kertas buat 4 lembar halaman. Jadi paling nggak hemat 60% kertas. Pokoknya gue gak peduli berapa biayanya dan printer gue bakal dol apa nggak. Yang penting file hardcopy-nya udah ditangan iya nggak?

Well. Tapi apa gue berani yah? Hmm time to conquer my self..

Why is it relevant? Why should you care?

One of the lessons I have learned over the last 10 months is to let the data dictate your course of action. Excuse me while I put in my pocket protector and slide on my thick rim glasses. There we go! Yes! Data is indisputable! What I have found with many businesses is that they feel the need to build a community or engage socially, but do so without looking at their business need first. What is the data telling you? What products are down and why? How can SM help spike those numbers? Has your competition eaten into your market share? How can your social media presence help you suck back the lost market and then some? I could go on for hours with questions like these!

The worn out 6 is a metaphor for being the hot spot for all business. In the case of the Chittenden Bank in Chelsea VT, we learned that a large percentage people take $60.00 out of the ATM per visit. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how I came to this conclusion, knowing all ATM’s spit out money in multiples of $20. But that kind of epiphany has happened to me several times upon looking at data for companies. The data will tell you the who, what, how and why. Data a lot of times shines the spotlight on where you need to engage socially, as brightly…as…well…the missing 6 in the picture above.

Confused on where to engage? Start with the traditional marketing data. Simple things like what are the items being clicked on in Constant Contact (or any mailing list service you use). Research the industry by keywords, what are the keywords most prevalent in the Social Media channels? These are just one of many actions you can take to research. I am happy to talk to you further about how to find your sweet spot!

Sachin Tendulkar jumped into the debate over umpiring referrals, arguing that more technology should

Sachin Tendulkar jumped into the debate over umpiring referrals, arguing that more technology should be implemented, albeit with no referral system accompanying it. Being Sachin Tendulkar, he probably knows that the cricketing world will be more than a little interested in what he has to say…which is why it is worth breaking down his suggestions.

Tendulkar strongly supports the use of Hot-Spot in determining bat-pad and caught-behind dismissals, while he also suggests using tennis-style hawk-eye technology to spot overstepping no-balls; both technologies are used extensively by commentary crews. Of greater interest though, is what Tendulkar thinks should not be changed- he is against the referral system and using technology for lbw decisions:

“I’m not particularly happy with the referrals because I’m not convinced of the angles (on television),” Tendulkar told India Today magazine. “I’m not convinced. I wasn’t happy when we first went through it [on India's tour of Sri Lanka last year].”

Given that dodgy lbw decisions have probably been the biggest inspiration for those advocating increased use of technology, I find Tendulkar’s exclusion of just those dismissals (I am excluding situations where batsmen are bowled since there really isn’t a debate there) rather puzzling. However, I understand the rationale- indeed, at the risk of being a heretic, I side with him on that issue. There have been a number of times when the predicted Hawk-eye trajectory has just looked off, even accounting for visual illusions. Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that Hawk-eye- which is ultimately a prediction based on rapid-frame snapshots and algorithms- can accurately account for the diversity of pitch and weather conditions across matches. This is important: marginal differences in a pitch can account for an extra inch here and there…it is those very inches that make a marginal lbw decision so, well, marginal. Getting hit above the knee-roll on a bouncy Perth track is worlds apart from getting hit above the knee-roll on a pancake-flat subcontinent pitch. On the other hand though, given the way in which Hawk-eye works, I expect its accuracy would improve as the gap between pitching and striking the pad increases (since more information on the pitch can implicitly be accounted for); this still doesn’t put me in favor of its adoption.

Precluding the argument by analogy, there are relevant differences between cricket and tennis- the latter uses Hawk-eye largely in order to determine where a ball pitched, not how it pitched. For obvious decisions, umpires are probably just as good as Hawk-eye at determining an lbw decision; for the marginal cases, I could live with the odd error from umpires, rather than adopt an additional form of error. I understand that umpires cannot be precise either- why else would we be having this discussion- but I place more faith in a thinking, cognitive being, capable of making adjustments. Granted, this is a contentious view and quite often, umpires do make egregious errors; however, given the small proportion of matches where such a decision may actually determine the outcome of the game, I think the importance of the issue has been overstated[1].

To be, or not to be...

Which provides a segue of sorts into another point made by Tendulkar viz. the possible rotation of umpires during a match, in order to alleviate errors attributable to fatigue. I appreciate the sentiment, but this idea does not strike me as a very good one at first glance. As mentioned above, pitch differences and subtleties are important factors and I can only see an umpire getting a better handle on things over time. Think about a batsmen getting “set” after some time at the crease, once he gains a measure of the conditions; I think the same idea can be abstracted in thinking about umpiring accuracy. As a match progresses, the umpire probably becomes more accustomed to the conditions, accounting for wind, irregular bounce and so forth. When the “set” umpire is switched out for a fresh one (analogous to a new batsmen at the crease), the latter would need to familiarize himself with the conditions. Again, one could think about batsmen being extra vulnerable when they are fresh at the crease; the same would probably apply to a new umpire. Although my Statsguru expertise does not extend this far, I expect one could easily verify my claim by examining just when in a match erroneous decisions are most likely to occur, given historical statistics. Further research anyone?

What about referrals? I think the discussion above provides an answer by default: yes in certain situations and no in others. They will be a permanent feature in international test matches now, so I suppose we will get to test out our predictions in the real world. For now, inevitably, the jury is out.

[1] It is worth noting here that there are a number of matches in which perceived game-changing decisions were blown out of proportion. Take two examples: Umar Akmal’s lbw decision in the recent Pakistan-New Zealand Champions Trophy clash and the infamous 2008 Sydney test between India and Australia. In the Champions Trophy match, Pakistan scored only 233- it was a collective batting failure, supplemented by some shoddy fielding. Indians often forget that despite the countless umpiring oversights, Michael Clarke nabbed three wickets in the finals over of the match. An appalling late-innings collapse made the difference between a loss and a draw; that’s the bottom line. Cries over umpiring howlers often serve to rationalize a loss in fans’ mind.

This morning, as I do every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I went to Daily Donuts, a store in the strip mall at the corner of Nogales and Amar in Walnut. This has become a habit — buying a couple of donuts for breakfast after spending almost four hours in dialysis.

It dawned on me, after all this time, that the donut shop has become a hangout of Pinoys. The Cambodian couple that owns the store has obviously gained a “niche” market for their donuts, and they cater to this clientele carefully.

They’ve even learned the value of listahan ng utang — creating a handwritten list of clients to whom they grant “credit lines” of donuts, coffee, cigarettes and lotto tickets. This listahan is kept in a spiral notebook on the counter next to the cash register. Shades of the homegrown sari-sari store!

Some sit inside, eyes glued to the lotto monitor as it raffles off the winning numbers on a jueteng-like game called “Hot Spots.” Some stand outside, smoking (California law prohibits smoking inside public places) and discussing — quite knowledgeably — the day’s local and national issues.

The major issues at hand lately have been California’s poor financial situation, Obama’s health care reform proposals, his waffling on Afghanistan, and how the Democrats “rule” Congress. Other topics include rising costs of airline tickets to Manila, Pacquiao’s latest fight, the coming Philippine national elections and presidential candidates, Kris Aquino vis-a-vis Noynoy Aquino, Wowowee, or which turo-turo (Pinoy-Pinay, DJ’s Bibingkahan, Toto’s Lechon Manok, Manila Sunset, etc.) serves the best Pinoy food — practically everything under the sun that affects Filipinos.

The discussions often turn into debates, each sentence predictably punctuated with the crisp “putangina.” Truly Pinoy.

These curbside gatherings are probably the Pinoy version of the “knowledge circles” led by Aristotle, Plato or Sophocles in ages past. They are the equivalent of breakfast huddles at the Peninsula in Makati, the defunct Leila’s Coffee Shop, and even the coffee klatches at sari-sari stores.

For Filipinos, habits die hard…

DETROIT — General Motors is making an Internet router available as a dealer-installed option on select vehicles throughout its Buick, Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet lineup. (Note: Apple Chevrolet in Tinley Park, IL already sells this unit from Autonet Mobile and can install it in any vehicle of your choice! See more details here.)

The device, from Autonet Mobile, of San Francisco, creates a Wi-Fi hotspot that extends 150 feet within and around the vehicle, allowing occupants to use portable devices to tap into the Web.

Initially, the Internet access will be available only in GM’s vans, SUVs, crossovers and trucks — vehicles most likely to be used by families.

The idea is that rear-seat passengers can use laptop computers, game players and other portable devices while people in the front seat can use the connection to stream Internet radio stations into the vehicle.

“Ninety percent of customers prefer surfing the Internet over just watching movies,” Sterling Pratz, CEO of Autonet Mobile, said in a statement. “Customers want the biggest brands the Internet has to offer in their car, such as Facebook, YouTube and FlyCast Internet radio.”

The mobile device also is intended to help small businesses stay connected.

Dealers will begin offering the router this month… The Autonet device comes with a docking station, meaning it can be moved from one GM vehicle to another.
