I imagine that news of an artistic nature will start slowing down.

It did last year as I recall. But there will still be plenty of movie reviews to publish.

The festive season is upon us. There’s Christmas. Nominations and awards for various film honours will also be presented in the coming weeks.

I adore this time of year.

Great song, Hot video!  Adam Lambert has brought life back to the music industry

There is one thing about Adam Lambert, when he does a performance he really puts it out there and people talk. I am sure that people are either going to love or hate his AMA performance  but boy will they be talking about it.  I mean he stole the stage from everyone, including Lady Gaga.

Controversial… You betcha.   No apologies needed, Adam!

This is pretty good for the kid who placed First Runner Up in last season’s American Idol. He  took a track called “For Your Entertainment”  from his new album to be released Monday, Nov. 23rd today!!! and cranked it up several notches for the stage.

America, you have not seen anything yet. Lambert mania has just begun!

He just burned up the AMA’s and is ready to set the world on fire!

Taylor Lautner, maybe a werewolf in the most popular vampire movie of the season but he is definitely the breakout star.  His Hollywood hunk good looks  that has been the biggest driving force eclipsing even the popular characters of the series Bella and Edward.

He plays Jacob Black,  who is in love with Bella, but is in the tribe of werewolves .  This makes for the compelling push and pull between the enmity that exist between the vampires and werewolves.

Interestingly enough, it has become a marketeer’s dream for the film, since Lautner’s fan base has grown and pitted him against the popular Robert Pattinson.  This has made the feverish hunger for the opening of the movie “The Twilight Saga New Moon“  even more epic.

Lautner’s star is on the rise and, by all indications, is going to surpass Pattinson who has not seemed as accessible to the fans.

Every season, So You Think You Can Dance, continues to up its game, as one of the most exciting talent competitions on TV today.  Season 6 especially has brought competitors from diverse dance traditions and seen them grow exponentially when challenged with other types of dance forms outside their comfort zone.

The choreography presented this season has been at the top of the game.  Some standouts for me include the surprise underdog Ashleigh Di Lello  ,  her husband Ryan Di Lello, Ellenore Scott,  Legacy Perez,  Nathan Trasoras, Russell Ferguson, Jacob Karr, and Mollee Gray.

There is no faking talent on this show and I think that is why it is why it is so appealing. Dance is celebrated and America is in love with it.

Here are some of my favorite routines that were performed during the show.

Jason Castro

Former American Idol, Jason Castro, recently released a single, called Let’s Fall in Love Again that is optimistic and pretty good.  This is a good sign for his soon to be released album. It showcases a talent in the singer that did not quite shine on the popular singing talent show.  Looks like another Idol success story.

So…it’s the weekend once again, boys and girls.

I have at least one fascinating cinematic event that I will be involved in. Sooner rather than later.

But don’t tell anyone. It’s a secret. At least until I write about it. That will be next week some time.

Are you all giddy with feverish anticipation? Hope so.

Our Friday musical highlight takes us all the way back to 1967. It’s the fabulous and artfully amusing HELLO HELLO by SOPWITH CAMEL.

Our musical highlight for this monumental Friday is DAVID BOWIE’S ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS – from the movie of the same name.

Fabulous song for any time of year. But particularly now.

Terrible flick, though. If you want to check out a great film set in the swinging 60s, DARLING is an exceptional treasure.

It was a BEST PICTURE nominee. JULIE CHRISTIE won a well deserved ACADEMY AWARD for her performance.

Tom Goss at Lori's Diner in San Francisco

I first wrote about Tom Goss back in December of 2oo8 after discovering him through the Feast of Fun podcast. I was deeply moved by his song that he wrote called Rise.  Since that time I have written a few more posts about him and seen him perform here in San Francisco this past year.

Yes, I am a fan.  Not in that crazy, screaming kind of way.   I am a fan of this talented artist who knows how to take words that have an emotional impact, and through the tempo and rhythm they create, form  a mixture of poetry of  what I like to call Gossism.

It is a writing process, that he even admits,  often comes to him from his subconscious with no predetermined agenda.  It is a built in talent. That is what makes this artist unique in his style and delivery.

Tom was in San Francisco this weekend because he participated in the Defying Inequality Concert where he joined many celebrity luminaries in a benefit to end discrimination against the LGBT community. They specifically were advocating  marriage equality and domestic partnership rights.

Tom contacted me and wanted to find some time to hang out together.  That was a real surprise to me.  I knew he was busy and I knew that he had a lot of fans in the city, so I was deeply touched that he reached out to me in the way he did.  He kept in contact with me through instant messaging chronicling his preparation for the concert, typical of messages friends would send each other. Of course, we also communicated to coordinate our meet up.  He has a great sense of humor and sarcasm that I liked and instantly related to very well.

So last night on his way to the San Francisco Airport,  I met him at the front of the Westfield Mall in downtown San Francisco after work.  He had just commuted in from the East Bay on the Bart.  There he stood at about 7: 15 p.m. at night  casually dressed with his flip flops.  He had his guitar inside a stickered covered case. He had a couple of khaki back packs. I volunteered to hold one of them.

Soon after he saw how awkwardly I was holding it and he kept asking me if he should hold it.   Then we started a sarcastic banter that broke the ice and actually made me feel more comfortable.  I felt like I was hanging out with an old buddy.

Also, even though he is originally from Wisconsin,  this guy definitely has adopted the East Coast attitudes.  He wanted to cross Market Street in heavy traffic  and not at the crosswalk.  He reminded me of my friends back East.  I told him to cross at the cross walk, because in my mind, all I needed was to have a taxi to run over Tom Goss and have him splattered all over downtown San Francisco.  Knowing him, the only thing that would not be damaged would have been his guitar, because  I know he would have found some way to have protected it.

Tom is actually not a tall guy and is actually younger looking in person.   He was immediately fascinated with the sights and sounds of San Francisco.   He was especially  in tuned with the sounds.  As we walked towards Union Square, he  instinctively started moving to the rhythm of the sounds of  a street drummer or the strums of the guitar of a street musician.  He really had an ear for music.  I thought in my mind, I wish he would be inspired to write a song about San Francisco.

He loved the the aliveness of the city and also the Trolley car.  Tom was very engaged with everything around him and it was great to see him soak it all up. I began to understand where his creativity pulls from to produce his art.

We decided to get a snack at Lori’s Diner on Powell Street.  The Diner’s motif  is a throwback to the 5o’s and I joked that it should remind him of Wisconsin.  He walked into the restaurant  and said ” Cool.”

He ordered chocolate cake but I found out he likes more non chocolate cake like cake…I think  he likes the fudgier kind.  He also ordered tea.  I ordered a bowl of fruit and a low fat latte.

We were able to chat like old friends. I asked him about his music.  He talked about how conceptually some of his writing comes from trying to put words or parts of words together. he also talked about how certain words come to him and may not actually seem to be combination of words ever used before but worked for the song.

You can see in the way he talked and described the process that he can hear the beats and rhythms in his mind.  It is really embedded in who he is and is so natural to him that I do not think he realizes how amazing it is  to us who do not have his talent.

He is so proud of his album Back to Love ( rightly so).  Tom told me that he has had a difficult time working on a new album because it has been hard to let go of Back to Love.  Here you see the heart of an artist emerge.  It is that transition stage between works of art that each artist must make from giving birth to one work of art and preparing for the labor of another one.

We also talked about our personal lives.  We talked about religion. He was a seminarian before he came out. I was an active Catholic and then a Mormon.  We talked about our partners. We talked about our current lives.  He asked me a lot of genuine questions about my life and my coming out process.  He seemed interested and I was actually surprised  that he wanted to know more about it.

We also joked a lot.  He built a pyramid out of  half and half creamer packages on the table ( a talent he was proud of).

It was time to go.  I had a chance to thank him.  I remember when I first heard his song “Rise” it spoke to my heart because it related to my journey. I thanked him for writing an anthem for my life.  His music and writing has touched me and I wanted him to know that his art was appreciated.

One of  his other songs that I love is ” Lover” that he is currently working on a music video on – which will be exciting to see when it is completed.

His song “Til The End”  was #1 on Logo’s Click list this week.

We both went to the Powell Bart station together.  He caught the train to San Francisco Airport and I caught the train to Oakland.

This was a good night in San Francisco.

Post note: I met Tom Goss though listening to the Feast of Fun and through blogging,  social media opened the door for me to make great connections in my life.  I am a believer.

Seeing as I featured the Broadway debut of JONNY LEE MILLER in one of this morning’s posts, I thought I’d take our Friday musical highlight from a film in which he starred.

I’m talking about the gloriously gritty TRAINSPOTTING. The song in question is CLOSET ROMANTIC by DAMON ALBARN, which is played over the closing credits.

JONNY’S character happens to have a huge obsession with JAMES BOND.

I think that they should play the theme from GOLDFINGER every time I enter a room. That would certainly have sufficient flair and the proper kind of distinction.

Hmmm. Some day…

After an eight year absence, the 11th ceremony of the Hot d’Or Awards, the grand ceremony of French porn, made its return this week without missing a beat.

The event was held on the prestigious stage at the Salle Wagram in the City Of Lights – Paris, France – some 200 meters from the Place Charles de Gaulle-Etoile and a stone’s throw away from the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe.

In attendance was a plethora of porn elite including Jesse Jane, Jenna Haze, Alexis Texas, Katsuni, Jessica Drake, Kristina Rose, Christoph Clark and John Stagliano.

The overwhelming attendance of the mainstream journalistic press was an historic opportunity to give back to the French adult industry its place in mainstream media.

Evil Angel director Christoph Clark, nominated for Best Director of Gonzo, agreed “This ceremony is fantastic. It will be an unforgettable moment for me because I knew the first Hot d’Or 20 years ago. This will prove to the media that pornography is always.”

French director and nominee John B. Root echoes Clark’s thoughts “We have a great need of sequins and media, reminding people that the X is primarily a genre with artists. By coming out to Hot d’Or, the media restores speech to people who do this job and they return the cameras and the press to this kind of art, which still has plenty to say.”

“This is the ceremony where everyone should be,” admits nominee Mike Angelo, in the race for the title of Best Performer. “An old image when it was still the difference between amateur and professional. The time has come!”

In the history of the Hot d’Or, the Salle Wagram succeeds Lido, which hosted the ceremony in the capital in 1997, for the first time alternating with the tradition of Cannes. Formerly devoted to evenings of the Napoleonic Empire, the stage has seen the likes of Maria Callas, Georges Carpentier, Rostropovich and Lino Ventura. Created in 1865, this space of 850 square meters entirely wooded, with balcony, is the ideal setting for a gala dinner, followed by a lavish awards ceremony, presented by 1970s porn sensation Brigitte Lahaie, to honor France’s Hot Video Magazine’s 20th Anniversary.

Jesse Jane says with wide-eyed amazement, “This place is beautiful, it looks like a ballroom. Kinda like a French castle – you’re in a big, huge, grand

ballroom of a French castle. It’s very classy with all the columns and the detailed chandeliers. I was excited before but now I’m really excited because this place makes you want to dress up. This is gonna amplify everybody being all done up. It’s not going to feel like your typical porn awards show. I love France. I love the Hot d’Or show. I’m so glad to be here. Ooo La La!”

“I’m very grateful to win this award. For all the people that voted for me and to be recognized internationally as an actress out of the thousands of girls that are in the industry, that’s a big deal,” says Jane of her Best American Actress award.

“This is my first time out of the states. Coming to Paris is just great. It is breathtaking to have a ceremony here. Everything is so graceful, it’s unbelievable,” Kristina Rose says visibly excited. Nominated for Best American Starlet, the California actress didn’t hesitate for a second to cross the Atlantic to attend the Hot d’Or. “I came with Mr. Pete and Alexis Texas. We are all nominated and once we found out, we knew we absolutely had to come here. It’s like living in a dream. I would bet that this is the best ceremony in the business. Even better than the U.S., though I probably shouldn’t say that. There is something very classy here. It really is totally different than any award show in the states.”

When asked what she thought of the European girls Alexis Texas replies, “I’ve seen some with very big tits. I like the big boobies.” I guess after such a long transatlantic flight, we know where her mind was.

Kayden Kross, who later took home Best American Starlet, must have been on the same flight as Alexis. When asked about the differences between the U.S. and France she springs to life with, “there are so many gorgeous people in this country it’s not even fair! I’m eyeing a few really gorgeous performers that I’ve never met before. Like that blonde over there with the ponytail.” Kayden must have a good eye because it just so happens she’s talking about euro-hottie Tarra White, who picked up a few awards of her own including Best European Actress. “I named her my nymph. I love her. I’ll meet her later!” Kross says enthusiastically.

Jessica Drake seems genuinely shocked to be recognized so far away from home, “A lot of people seem to know who I am. It feels strange. I go to introduce myself to them and they stop me with ‘Oh My God, I know you!’ It’s very exciting that the Hot d’Or is back. I was already here for the last edition in Cannes and I’m really happy to be back! There is a glamorous side that comes with this unique event and the international recognition is absolutely incredible.”

The international craze also agrees with Dana DeArmond, who made the trip just to accompany her friend Bobbi Starr, who’s nominated for Best American Performer. For DeArmond, the Hot d’Or represent “a very important event, especially when considering returning to the United States. When people learn that we were in Europe for a ceremony, our popularity breaks through the roof!”

“Having a Hot d’Or is truly coveted,” says French actress Katsuni, who took home the award for Best French Actress and Best Actress Blog. “It’s so good to be recognized in your own country!” On the Best Blog award she continues, “I was not expecting it at all. Generally people like hard[core], but my blog is super soft so I didn’t think it would be successful.”

“For me the Hot d’Or Awards were before. All the stories I heard from others who told me about the ‘big time.’ Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to live it. So today I’m delighted it’s back. Vegas is Vegas, the city of excess. But Paris is the Parisian chic, it has lots of charm, the American dream. So it’s really nice to have this event here.”

But the final word rests with the enthusiastic Kristina Rose: “It’s so good to be here I think about saving as much as possible to come live here! Just this …”
