I just noticed a little tidbit of information in a hot-fix’s patch notes from a week ago. I haven’t been playing my Knight very much at all, so this foolish decision completely zoomed right over my head. As we all know, a few weeks back, stuns were removed, and replaced with staggers. Knights and Chosen had their cone changed to a 9-second stagger. Fine, it works great and can be a powerful tool still. At the time people complained that the auras that they had did not break the stagger, and that’s not fair.

No one who complained stopped to sit back and actually think for a minute about what a dichotomy it is to have a class with an AoE stagger, and then have an ability to counter the action they just preformed! Why in the world would anyone ever think that is balanced to then go back and do this:

Chosen

Dreadful Agony: Damage dealt by this ability will now correctly break Staggers.

Knight of the Blazing Sun

All-Out Assault: Damage dealt by this ability will now correctly break Staggers.

Nevermind that previously, it had been reported as working as intended, because they saw the foolishness in handing out free immunities AND negating a CC tool for the archetype that, by Mythic’s own admission, is supposed to be all about the CC. Does no one else see the foolishness in this? Why have the boards not completely blown up in response to this? This is a strong nerf on the ability of these two classes, and noone seems to see the problem.

MVP Lee Desmond posted a great post about the November updates for Office Communications Server 2007

MVP Lee Desmond posted a great post about the November updates for Office Communications Server 2007 R2. Check it out here: http://www.leedesmond.com/weblog/?p=607

Check out the latest Nov 2009 updates released for the different Office Communications Server 2007 R2 server roles as described in KB968802. This applies to both the Standard and Enterprise Editions.

A very important and welcome addition to assist the patch management process is the “Cumulative Server Update Installer” (ServerUpdateInstaller.exe) delivered as part of this release. Instead of having to determine and manually applying the relevant patches to the various R2 server roles, this tool relieves the administrator from those tedious chores by applying all updates for the appropriate server role in just one click. You can also use this tool on the command line with the switches /silent, /forcereboot and /extractall.

If not already present, you shoud also apply the update* for the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Back-end Database (KB969834).

Download for the updates (.msp), executable (.exe) and installer (.msi) can be obtained here.

Problem… Assume that you enable BitLocker for the system drive on a computer that is running Windows

Problem…

Assume that you enable BitLocker for the system drive on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Then, you shut down the computer. You notice the computer intermittently stops responding during shutdown. Additionally, the operating system seems to have already shut down, and then the screen turns black. However, the computer does not turn off completely. Therefore, you may notice that the computer fan and other devices are still turned on.
This problem does not occur if BitLocker is completely disabled, or if BitLocker is enabled on a data drive but disabled on the system drive.
Note When this problem occurs, the functionality of the operating system is shut down. However, the computer hardware is not signaled to power off.

So, for anyone that is running BitLocker on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (which I STRONGLY recommend doing), please download this hotfix, test it, and apply it as soon as possible.

Microsoft released the Office 2007 Cumulative Update for October 2009 which includes an Outlook 2007

Microsoft released the Office 2007 Cumulative Update for October 2009 which includes an Outlook 2007 hotfix package. This is of particular interest to any organization that uses a document management system like InterWoven and are looking to deploy Communicator to their end users. The following bug is resolved in this patch:

You install an Office Outlook add-in to open Microsoft Office Word documents from Outlook 2007. However, when you run Office Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Office Communicator at the same time, you cannot open Office Word documents by running the add-in.

What this fix refers to is the fact that Communicator tends to monopolize the DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) channel to Outlook which prior to this patch caused other applications to fail to execute a call to DDE. For example, a document management system that uses Outlook to call Word would fail to launch Word because Communicator would be blocking the DDE channel.

Do Polski przybyłem czwartego września. Towarzyszył mi w kieszeni gadajnik firmy HTC (High Tech Computer).

Dokładniej aplikacja: AT&T Xpress Mail (http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/solutions/email-messaging/email-xpress-mail.jsp) Program pozwalający na synchronizację poczty z MS Outlook, Lotus Notes i paru innych. Otóż mimo manualnej konfiguracji fona i wyboru operatora PLAY, Xpress Mail na siłę starał się połączyć z siecią AT&T wykorzystując wszelkie zasoby procesora. Wszystko to powodowało praktyczne zamulenie aparatu do granicy bezużyteczności.

W zupełności wystarcza moim potrzebom prywatnym i firmowym.

Microsoft MyPhone

My fellow co-workers and I have been dealing with an extremely slow build > render process when w

My fellow co-workers and I have been dealing with an extremely slow build > render process when we are developing SharePoint solutions that are deployed to the BIN folder for over a year now.

We are all using are own Windows Server 2003 image hosted on a VMware ESX Server farm with tons of other VM’s.

We all know that SharePoint can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes to fire up the very first time you hit it and we accept that fact. However, we found ourselves waiting for up to 1 minute after making some code changes and perform a build that deployed the DLL to the BIN folder for SharePoint to render.

This can become extremely frustrating and frankly a waste of our time. I had gotten to a point where I just accepted the fact we had to deal with the slowness because no amount of tweaking we did on the VM (adding memory, CPU, etc) seemed to make a difference.

One of my co-workers did not want to accept the fact continued to investigate/troubleshoot the issue. He happened to come across the Understanding ASP.NET Dynamic Compilation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms366723.aspx) article, more specifically the section called Optimizing Dynamic Compilation. This section mentions an attribute you can add to your web.config file called optimizeCompilations which requires you to install a hot fix (KB961884). This attribute is going to be part of the .NET Framework 4.0 when it ships.

We were all amazed at the difference this attribute made to our development process. In one instance, it cut the time from 1 minute 10 seconds to 12 seconds (80% improvement!!).

The following screenshot shows the change in time with the attribute set to false and then set to true (fairly vanilla SharePoint application). The WebTimer utility just makes a simple web request to my SharePoint site.

Here is the order events described above:

optimzedCompilations attribute in web.config was set to “false”

Performed IISRESET to baseline

Executed WebTimer (40 seconds)

Modified some code in my solution and performed a build (which went into the BIN folder)

Executed WebTimer (30 seconds)

Switched optimizedCompilations to “true”

Performed IISRESET to baseline

Executed WebTimer (40 seconds)

Modified some code in my solution and performed a build

Executed WebTimer (12 seconds)

Needless to say, we have happy developers again!

You may or may not see much advantage to this if you are developing on a physical machine or on a workstation edition of a virtual client (VPC, VMware Workstation, or Virtual Box). But if you are running in an environment where the resources are being shared or you feel your build to render process seems slower than it should be, I highly recommend you try this hot fix / attribute out.

Today’s Issue: How to prepare for, and install a Hotfix on the BIGIP LTM 6400 running 10.0.1 configu

Today’s Issue:

How to prepare for, and install a Hotfix on the BIGIP LTM 6400 running 10.0.1 configured with Volumes

Where We Are:

As noted in the previous post, F5 released several hotfixes for the LTM recently (we’re now at HF2 for 10.0.1). As you may or may not know, you don’t install updates or hotfixes to the active volume… you apply them to an inactive volume, then you reboot into the patched one. That way, if something blows up, you boot back into the un-patched one and back to where you were.

How We Got Here:

So there are several things going on here…

Installing an inactive boot volume

Installing a hotfix

Image, Boot Volume, and Update/Hotfix Management

Everything that I’m going to present will be performed from the GUI, however it is my understanding that it can also all be done from the CLI.

As well, the scenarios below have been performed by connecting both to the Management Port and through the device’s external IP address, without any interruption to service (except obviously for the reboot part).

Let’s start with getting an install of the OS to an inactive volume:

Validate which is the active volume (System > Software Management > Volume Management)

Validate the active version (System > Software Management > Image List)

Install the existing image to an inactive partition (System > Software Management > Image List > BIGIP-10.0.1.283.0.iso) by selecting the Software Image, an inactive volume – in this case HD1.1 , and click INSTALL

Confirm Install

Install in process

Confirm Install completed

Next, we’ll get the Hotfix ISO up to the device:

Browse to the GUI System > Software Management > Hotfix > Import

Browse to the File Name and Import the .ISO file (in our case, BIGIP-10.0.1-354.0-HF2.iso, outlined here)

Importing the .ISO file

HotFix Import Complete

Finally, apply the Hotfix, and reboot into the patched volume:

System > Software Management > Hotfix : Hotfix-BIGIP-10.0.1-354.0-HF2.iso and select an inactive volume – in this case HD1.1, and lick Install

Confirm HF install

In progress

Confirm the HF installation (System > Software Management > Boot Locations > HD1.1)

Click Activate to reboot into this Volume

Reboot in Progress

Reboot Complete

Confirm Active Volume (HD1.1) & Updated Build (354.0)

You’ll also be able to see that the reboot has carried over your existing configuration… run yourself a new archive for posterity, and off you go!

When attempting to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 the upgrade attempt may fail with the message “This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it.” However, the next reboot of the machine’ll launch the upgrade process again only to fail with the same message. Windows Vista’ll have been restored on the computer but the Boot Configuration Database (BCD) store has not edited to restore Windows Vista as the default booting operating system. The computer’ll continue to boot to the Windows 7 Setup and then fail until the BCD database has been restored to its previous state.

To resolve (KB974078):

1. Insert the Windows Vista Media into the drive and exit the Windows Vista Setup when its launched.
2. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, and then right-click the Command Prompt icon, and then click Run as Administrator.
3. Type the following command at a command prompt and press ENTER
Drive:\boot\Bootsect.exe /NT60 All (Note: In this command, Drive is the drive where the Windows Vista installation media is located).
4. Restart your computer

Na dann, Viel Spass beim selber Testen!
CU
