So, yesterday, we were talking about hotkey set ups for various characters. I decided to post up my hotkey set up for the fun of it since I remembered Vierma and Kuro telling me that my hotkeys were weird as fuck. Hahaha. Personally, I think it’s a lot easier than whatever Saylah had, but everyone’s different.

Row 1: Bless, Agi Up, Heal, Teleport, Kyrie Elesion, Assumptio, Pneuma
Row 2: Imposito Manus, Lex Aeterna, Magnificat, Safety Wall, Aspersio, Pneuma, Resurrection, Ruwach, Warp Portal
Row 3: Clementia, Cantocandidus, Coluseo Heal, Renovatio, High Heal, Praefatio, Gloria, Cure, Status Recovery
Row 4: Epiclesis, Ancilla, Duple Light, Oratio, Sacrament, Holy Light, Lex Divina, Slow Agi, Expiatio

Personally, it makes sense to me but everyone’s different. Lol.

When I hit 150/50, there will obviously be a few changes. Cure and Status Recovery will be replaced with Lauda Ramus and Lauda Agnus. Clearance will replace Lex Divina on R4, and Lex Divina will be placed in R1.

As for keying gears for switching equips, I just do everything manually. At this point, I don’t even bother switching my gears because everything oneshots me anyways. As I get more VIT and upgrade the shit out of my gear, hopefully things will improve.

For Editing on the command line you can’t beat bash. Hitting the up key to get a command you’ve previously run is a god send especially when you’ve got that really long multiple piped command. There are a few more things you can do with BASH here is a page with them on it.

My newest favourite is ctrl-r to allow you to search through the list of previous commands rather than have to go through them one by one. It replaces my old favourite of typing the start of a long directory name and then hitting tab to have it automatically completed.

Clicking is sometimes a drag, especially when you are on fire. You don’t want to break your momentum

Clicking is sometimes a drag, especially when you are on fire. You don’t want to break your momentum by taking your hands off of the keyboard to invoke some action on the screen. You need hotkeys.

I’ve watched releases of the modeler carefully, and now and then a new hotkey sneaks in without huge fanfare. Here are some that my fingers find most handy.

F5, Run Baby Run

I develop on a Mac, and leverage many of its tools, and the command-line is one of them. Sure not all Business Engineers will be power users, but sometimes you’ll find some Business Engineers need a little more umf now and then. For instance, when designing themes for Mendix, I need to make minor adjustments to my theme and apply it real quick back into the zipfile. After making these changes I cmd-tab to my terminal, hit the “up” key to get my last zip bash command, then cmd-tab back to my Mendix modeler, and hit F5. This gets repeated frequently if my design changes with many little iterations. Better yet, let me just show you 1 iteration. Notice the mouse cursor stays in one place.

Shift-F5, Stop

What goes up, must come down. Use Shift-F5 if you need to stop your server. You’ll probably use this infrequently.

F2, Garden-Variety Rename for Windows

This is a bit redundant, since you can start typing away at captions in your microflows or widgets on your forms. The only time this will be useful, is if your properties pallet has focus on another field than the Caption field.

Ctrl-Left & Ctrl-Right, Moving stuff

This one I absolutely love. Entities with lots of attributes generate grids on forms that contain a horde of columns and search fields. If only there was a way to sort them quickly. Talk is cheap. Lets see it in action.

F11, Maximize and Restore

And as you’ve seen in the previous video, F11 is a must if you work on a screen with little real estate. Use this key to maximize your workspace.

Ctrl-G, Goto Artifact

This one is handy if you know what artifact you want to navigate to within your model, without hunting for it in the Project Explorer.

Another handy trick, is using the Mouse’s middle button on the microflow canvas. Its helps you pan your view, and using the mouse wheel, helps you zoom in and out if you don’t use a Magic Trackpad™.

Productivity is like Formula1 racing. Every little improvement helps, even if it contributes a 1 or 2%. Once you try hotkeys, you will find your ergonomics improve, your fingers do the work and helps you move with incredible ease through your modeling routine letting you focus even more.

I’m burning to see more hotkeys in future versions of Mendix.

For anybody who doesn’t know, working at Umbraco HQ, every Fridays is Freedom Fridays, in whic

For anybody who doesn’t know, working at Umbraco HQ, every Fridays is Freedom Fridays, in which the whole team take a break from their usual projects, and spend the day doing some personal development.

Having spent a fair bit of time playing around with Knockout.js recently (If you haven’t done already I urge you to checkout the Introduction to Knockout JS talk I gave at the Umbraco UK Festival back in November), I thought I’d have a go at writing my own plugin for it.

With that in mind, I introduce to you, Knockout Hotkeys.

Knockout Hotkeys is a custom binding plugin for Knockout that allows you to define global hotkeys for elements in your design, allowing you to effectively develop keyboard driven interfaces.

You can define a hotkey by using one of three binding attributes

    hotkeydown

    hotkeyup

    hotkeypress

The actual syntax is then as follows (NB: Modifier keys should be defined in alphabetical order, ie alt+ctrl+shift):

<input type="text" data-bind="hotkeydown: { shift1 : doSomething }" />

If you would prefer your key combinations to be a little more readable, you can also define them in the following format:

<input type="text" data-bind="hotkeydown: { 'shift+1' : doSomething }" />

You can also register multiple hotkey combos within a single binding statement as follows:

<input type="text" data-bind="hotkeydown: [{ 'shift+1' : doSomething }, { 'shift+2' : doSomethingElse }]" />

In addition to the key combination option, you can also provide an if statement which must be met to allow the hotkey to trigger:

<input type="text" data-bind="hotkeydown: { 'shift+1' : doSomething, if: currentItem() == $data }" />

Lastley, you can also use a more verbose syntax to allow the creating of dynamic key combinations:

<input type="text" data-bind="hotkeydown: { key: 'shift+' + $data.substr(0,1).toLowerCase(),  do: doSomething }" />

If you’d like to give Knockout Hotkeys ago, you can grab it now over on bitbucket.

All in all, it’s been a lot of fun creating this plugin. The more I explore Knockout, the more I love it. From the beautiful syntax, to the amazing documentation. I wish more libraries could be like this.

Two weeks ago we presented Part 1 of our preview and last week Part 2. Let’s continue today with Part 3.

Emailing receipts

We’re taking advantage of our new integrated email service to add this feature. At the Change Due window you’ll have the option to email receipts to your customers. It’s a great service to offer them and another reason for them to share their email addresses with you.

Gift Card payment hot key

This new feature came out of our first Day of Autonomy exercise. It was inspired by Trek’s cafeteria where Ascend is used and many employees use gift cards to pay for their lunches. Instead of clicking the Gift Card payment button, you can press Alt+F1 on the keyboard.

New Leisure Trends Export on Ascend Online Reports

Many of you provide a monthly data feed to Leisure Trends. We’ve provided a new export to help you easily retrieve this information. It’s available on Ascend Online Reports now. If you haven’t yet connected to Ascend Online reports, check out my previous blog on this topic for more details.

Tune in again next week for more previews!

Hotkeys are useful things. I’m used to using a ton, personally. Some people might call them key binds or key commands. There are some pretty complicated ones out there, but there are also some really simple and helpful ones.

I’m constantly amazed when I find people who don’t know a few simple hotkeys. It makes computer use so much more fluid and easy. Let’s face it – mouse clicking and menus are cumbersome and take extra time. When you can just move your fingers and have what you need open up in a second, it’s pretty darn convenient. These aren’t things that are really taught, though.

The most common key command combo I use is for COPY/PASTE. CTRL+C is copy, CTRL+V is paste. Not only is this useful and lets you avoid using the mouse, it also lets you sneak into some forms that don’t allow the right-click mouse menu to drop down. Yesterday I was in a training class at work. We were inputting a VIN (notice I didn’t use the redundant VIN Number, which is used in every instance of it being said in our notes), which is a pretty long combination of letters and numbers. The form didn’t want to let us right-click and paste, so I said “Just use CTRL+V.” Half the class was confused, so I described it. It worked; that same half of the class was astounded. I told them that copy was CTRL+C and thought about going into the whole CTRL+Z undo and such, but I decided that was for another time. Just by implementing one little key command, I made the work type much easier and nicer to work with.

Another common key command I love is ALT+TAB. This allows you to toggle through all the windows you have open on your desktop. If you’re like me, that often is more than five. An awesome little function, this lets you select exactly where you want to go. If you have Windows 7, it even gives you a tiny screenshot of what window you’ll be going to – which is incredibly helpful when you have about five Mozilla pages open, World of Warcraft, Steam, and about four document windows running (Hmmm, I don’t really need to multitask that much). At work we have to maneuver through multiple screens, which is tedious to do with a mouse. By telling my training class about the ALT+TAB command, it was a lot easier for people to do their work. Subsequently, I helped the company with ALT+TAB and they awarded me a medal for bravery in the face of user ignorance. Not really, though.

My continuous improvement project at work revolves around creating hotkeys or key bindings in order to make my work go faster. Continuous improvement focuses on eliminating steps to streamline a process in order to make it more efficient. I find it to be a pretty interesting concept. I also look at it a bit differently from most, but the essence is true to the process. In my opinion, CI is “How can I make my job easier? What do I HATE doing every day?” Taking a page out of my WoW playing skills, I made it so that my documentation fires off from pressing a key combo. I have my ALT+1, ALT+2, ALT+3, and ALT+4 rigged up to instantly insert a string of text. It’s massively useful since many of my work types require consistent and redundant documentation.

So basically, I’m a fan of key binds and hotkeys. There are FAR more here than I’ve mentioned. This is like a molecule on the tip of the iceberg. Regardless, I highly suggest that everyone does a little research to try to take a gander at some hotkeys that could be useful. It makes the computer experience a better one and even something this simple can drastically improve your day.

The topic I broach today is both necessary and volatile. I deem it necessary because there are only

The topic I broach today is both necessary and volatile. I deem it necessary because there are only a few ways we interact with web sites.

Mouse

Keyboard

Gestures (touch)

Smell doesn’t really figure in our daily interaction. An example of sound may be saying (‘Navigate to Google.com’) on your phone.

And while the evolution of touch interaction has significantly improved since its inception, the keyboard hasn’t progressed much since TAB and ENTER. For those of you who have used screen readers such as JAWS, you know just how unusable websites can be.Try going through the Wikipedia page for JAWS and navigate to a link halfway down the page.

Just how many tabs does it take?

Well, try to follow the numbers in the image below. To get to the target marked with the large red arrow, it takes 30 tabs not counting the 2 necessary if starting originally in the address bar.

So the big question is, how do we fix this?

Well, you might say “Keyboards have been used for a very long time and nobody seems to be complaining.” And I would point out that the only people purely keyboarding on a Web Site are those who are blind or visually impaired. It is rare for users to use a keyboard on a website except to type into fields. So, going back to our question, what we should really ask is ‘Who Cares?’ Most companies use user statistics before building any feature into their product. Limited resources and a large feature set means you do what gives you the most bang for the buck.

[Ed. Note – Sorry Roel. I don’t mean to pick on you. I just want to point something out.]

The reason I put Roel’s comment here is to drive home a point about ‘Who Cares?’ Keyboard usage is subjective and different users will give you different opinions. You have to base it on who your audience is. For example, Lifehacker provides ‘J’ ‘K’ navigation to browse through their articles. Their audience is generally going to be computer savvy power users who aim for streamlined efficiency.

Users who are familiar with keyboard shortcuts in their OS du jour will also be the ones who are more likely to use shortcuts in web sites.

For instance, check out the keyboard shortcuts to GMail as provided by Lifehacker. GMail is definitely not used by power users only. They do make up a small based of the overall user base but the fact that they went the extra mile to provide these shortcuts shows their level of commitment to excellence.Hotmail also has a big list of shortcuts and with their UI change, they have become a prominent player for your email data.

So why do some of the most visited websites fail to provide shortcuts?

If you go to web sites that provides pages of information such as 500px you can see their navigation pages at the bottom.

This is a great site. They have excellent user content. The design is simple yet elegant and does not steal away from the user content. They provide ‘J/K’ navigation but I could not get it to work. And that’s not the only thing that bugs me. If you zoom into their pages, you notice the arrow keys as if to taunt you into using them (they don’t work btw.) Why is there such a discrepancy? Why not inform you users directly so that they can see how to use navigation correctly?

Now try going to another site that offers the same type of paged content such as PeopleOfWalmart. You notice the paging right there at the top. But there is no way to navigate through the content easily on a keyboard. It took me almost 30 clicks to get to the 2nd page item for navigation.

As Smashing magazine says it, “Enable keyboard shortcuts in your Web applications.’ They even have a complied list of shortcuts for developers. And on their main page they have a paged list of articles on their main page.

But I can’t navigate through it!

So, I wish to implore you dear developer, consider your power users and add some keyboard shortcuts for navigation into your web site.

John Resig has even provided you with jquery.hotkeys so that you may easily add navigation support to your code. It supports all the major browsers (even IE 6).

Now you really have no excuse!

p.s. I looked for a way to enable keyboard navigation on the free version of WordPress and wasn’t able to find it. If anyone knows how to add this, please let me know. Thank you.
