I was starting to realize the type of music I knew I was going after. This type of music can best be described as “dirty,” due to it gritty and deep bass lines. Add some hi-hats and snare drums and we got ourselves a party! One day, Louis, Aaron and I decided to create a group name for us and that was the time that “dirtyone:thirty” was born.

During 2007, we threw parties and held residencies at two lounges in DC, Rendezvous and Saki. Both lounges being situated in the Adams Morgan area of DC made it quite a hassle to find parking. I believe this made it harder to get people to want to drive out and come to our party. My vision was to try to re-create the vibe we had at our “Filthy Fridays” parties back at “Dragonfly.”

Although we never ended up re-creating that vibe, we still managed to throw some great parties with other good friends. Our good friend, Worthy from San Francisco came by and played at “Rendezvous” for my wife’s birthday celebration, the second time around. The venue, although very small and intimate, remained packed until closing time. Regardless of the 3 a.m. closing time, people still wanted to hear and dance to more music. The bar ended up closing and we went home to reminisce about what a great party that was.

Since then, our group, dirtyone:thirty has narrowed itself to just Aaron and I. My deejay name is Themba, which is actually my birth name. You see, my mother had a good friend who was living in Kenya, 28 years ago. That friend had a child around that time and named her son, Themba. My mother liked that name and named me, Themba when I was born that year. This is the main reason why I take so much pride in my deejay name, because it means “hope” in the African Zulu language.

My partner Aaron, goes by “Xenoc,” which he has had for many years. Aaron always jokes that his name pops up first on the list if one were to google the name, “Xenoc.” Aaron is very musically talented, and I feel that our styles of music blend really well together. I believe he truly understands the type of musical path that I intend to take. We haven’t played out too much recently, but did have an outstanding show this past Halloween.

We played for 90 minutes, but had the best time and it seems that the crowd was really enjoying it. My wife said we did really good, and that really meant a bunch, since to me, she is my biggest critic. I can’t wait for the next show we have together. Until then, I will continue trying to put my music studio together, so that I can practice on creating music.

My goal would be to play a show with only my original material. This way, my performance would be pretty exclusive making it that more special.

Didn’t have a chance to write any shit yesterday……. For all you dj’s, there’s a 99 cent sale @ crooklynclan.net and crack4djs.net.  I got a whole bunch of new shiz there. Which is good cuz I have to make a new mix in order to “audition” for a residency in Vegas.  I’m excited about the opportunity…..

The house party I played on Saturday was off the hook.  There were around 500 heads there dancing there asses off for hours.  It was one of those end of the night moments where everyone applauds…….I was stoked> I’m posting video of the experience on youtube. You should check it out cuz there’s footage of these two dudes being literally lit on fire @ the party…..yeah, we do it like that……

There will be some new mixes on my podcast shortly……There’ll be a new progressive house mix that I’m making for a british online radio show, the “vegas” mix, and a straight crunk hip hop mix that I’m making for a lil’ tour round Kenya……yeah that’s right……i’m gonna spread the vibe to Africa.

That’s all on the agenda for now. Gonna chill for the holidays until december when stuffs gonna start rollin’ for me again. I hope you all have safe and happy holiday’s this year.  It’s always good to take a moment and look at the things I’m grateful for.  I’m grateful for my son, my family, my lady, my career, and for you….the people that help me want to continue on this path…..

So yes, I’m bogus as hell. It’s been over a month since I last posted. (Did you even notice?)

Well, contrary to popular belief I haven’t been spinning my wheels and acting as if I’m on a paid vacation. Quite the opposite, I’ve been a busy little bee doing academic research chores like applying for grants, editing audio, contemplating my academic future, revising my proposal wah wah wah, woo woo woo.

So exciting right?

But it’s the holidays!! Yippee!!!

And I have a gift for you…a break from my “scholastic” existential navel gazing! I’m going to cut straight to the chase and invite you to listen and enjoy some music from three FABULOUS events I attended recently.

#1 Spreadlove: The Felabration Edition

Spreadlove is one of my favorite monthly events. It’s hosted by one of my favorite DJs, DJ Kemit. October’s installation was a tribute to the incomparable Fela Kuti. So of course that means lots of Fela music, afrobeat, and music from the African diaspora.

As if that weren’t enough to guarantee my attendance spreadlove also featured two of my absolute favorite musicians: DJ Rich Medina and the legendary Roy “everybody loves the sunshine” Ayers.

Check out this video of Mr. Ayers playing vibes and serving as high priest of soul. The feeling in that place was electric.

#2 Reclaiming the “Rock” in Black Musical Expression

The was a phenomenal conference hosted by the Archives of African American Music and Culture at Indiana University meant to explore the legacy and current climate of Black folks who are all about rock music.

Now the absolute best part of this conference is that it wasn’t a bunch of talking heads theorizing about music and meaning, but the lineup was rife with some of my favorite music journalists/bloggers such as Greg Tate and Rob Fields and musicians like Tamar Kali and Linda Tillery.

So before this conference I had heard of Tamar Kali (mainly from her appearance in Afropunk) but she did a HELLUVA concert and converted me to her fold. Man alive, her voice is AMAZING. She has the vocal control and range of your favorite soul diva and the attitude that & don’t give a fuck attitude of the punk scene. (I’m street teaming hard right?) AND she be singing about stuff of substance.

#3 Tambor Party

So last Saturday night I roll up in this downtown club called Filter (fka the Mark) and I already knew based on the DJ line up that I would be on the dance floor all night. DJs Tabone and Stan Zeff’s crew did not let me down. It was all house music ALL house music. It reminded me so much of clubs in London where we would dance all night to an amazing mix of house, broken beat, and tribal house. AMAZING.

Two musical moments stick out for me. The first was a special live by Tribe Records UK artist Nathan Adams. I was SO happy he was there because I’ve loved his song “Circles” for years and I never knew who the hell sang it!  Mystery solved.

The second is when towards the end of the night the DJ played the Quintin Harris remix of Donnie’s “Cloud 9.”  I almost broke the heels on my shoes spinning around to this song.

So those are some of the highlights of the last few weeks. Special shout out to Bugz in the Attic/Jazznova event from last week too. And although December is right around the corner, there’s so much to look forward to before 2010 gets here!

Although he thinks that with his dance and breaking skills he should be in the finals of the Red Bull BC One b-boy battle, when he gets out on the dance floor the question arises as to who will get hurt first – him or those dancing around him.  Although he has “mastered” the likes of the Electric Slide, the Hustle, and the YMCA dance, people often ask if he is okay when he dances because it appears to the casual onlooker that he is having some type of seizure on the dance floor.  God forbid if he ever discovers MTV or Youtube because I don’t know if we can handle his loose (and by loose I mean train wreck) interpretations of Jerkin’, the Stanky Legg, the Ricky Bobby, or Swag Surfin’.

Simian Mobile Disco consists of producers James Ford and Jas Shaw from England.  Musically they are from somewhere else completely.  Combining styles of house and electro spanning several decades the result is a high-octane danceable pop heavy with vocals and hooks.

IN 2007 Simian Mobile Disco dropped their first album, Attack Decay Sustain Release.   The album quickly earned them underground success and has resulted in the groups accelerating fame.  Below is the lead single from Attack Decay Sustain Release:  ‘It’s the Beat’

Nu så har Johan Wedel’s låtar “Shu” och “Hehe” släppts på Beatport och vi är vad jag vet den första bloggen att dela med oss av dom två riktigt bra låtarna. Hört att Johan ska ha mycket olika nya projekt på gång och det ska bli intressant att få följa med i hans utveckling. Båda hans låtar är supportrad av bland annat, Roger Sanchez, Dimitri Vegas, Peter Gelderblom, Norman Doray, David Tort, Albin Myers, Ralph, Seamus Haji, Dim Chris, Warren Clarke, Tom Novy, Agent Greg, John Dahlbäck, Luciano Ingrosso med flera.
