With more grooves than a tyre wall at Silverstone, 3 Eyes of Time the new album from Finnish harsh progressive metal band Antipope is an intriguing mix of flavours and spices within a weave of eclectic metal influences. Awash with vibrant melodies and pleasing progressive enterprise it is a release which ignites plenty of appetite for the band and whilst not being the best or most original record to step forth over recent months it is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable.

Formed in 2004, the Oulu band have always been aside of most extreme metal bands, essences of black and death metal standing side by side with those of doom, gothic, and industrial metal within a continually evolving landscape of ideas from the band. After numerous EPs and demos Antipope drew the strongest attention with their debut album Desert which was released in 2010 on their own TCM Records. It was followed by the band signing with Violent Journey Records for the follow-up House of Harlot the following year and also this their third full length. Their second album saw the band create an even more groove laden collection of songs which 3 Eyes Of Time pushes further within its rich wealth of shadows and rapacious sound. The new release also sees vocalist Mikko Myllykangas take on bass duties after fellow band founder Santtu Heinilehto left the band in 2012, and leaves an eager wash of satisfaction for its imagination capturing escapades.

Opening song Close makes its introduction with a melodic beckoning of a singular guitar which smacks of The Eurythmics song Sweet Dreams, it is a heavily shadowed lure with bass in tow soon joined by a magnetic sonic tease and the expressive vocals of Myllykangas offering a slight Marilyn Manson feel. Once settled into its place the track wraps emotive arms around the ear whilst the vocalist moves through varied deliveries to bring a pleasing and unpredictable voice to the melodic wash now in charge of the still attention grabbing sinews. It is not a startling encounter but a strong and satisfying beginning to the release which passes over to the excellent Last Chance.

Guitar and bass immediately provoke and niggle the ear with compelling temptation whilst concussive beats begin their offering to the brewing sense of antagonism. What follows is a tempest of demanding but thrilling rhythmic and riff laden hunger lain with potent melodic endeavour and power metal like embraces. Admittedly the song ebbs and flows with the insistent and industrial honed urgency leaving the appetite greedy whilst the gentler flames incites a drop in intensity to the brewing ardour but it all goes to make the song imaginative and enthralling.

The following stroll of electronic and gothic metal fusion The River Standing Still, keeps attention firmly gripped, its heavy shadows and symphonic whispers expressing a temptation which is rich and teasing whilst the solo and melodic invention leaves a healthy desire for more. There is a sense of The New Jacobin Club to the dramatic presence of the song which asks and gets stronger involvement in its narrative whilst the following likes of the Fear Factory/ Type O Negative sounding Burn with riveting rhythms from drummer Tuska E. adding stronger addiction to the thrillingly carved textures from guitarists Juho Rikberg and Antti Karjalainen, the mix of smouldering atmospherics and fiery invention that is Exposure, and A Decomposing Ritual of Absorption all offer variation and refreshing individuality to the album. The last of these three is a prowling and consuming sinew veined cloud of blackened progressiveness and melodic acidity dripping emotive provocation and inciting expression.

With both The Logic of Self-Discovery and closer Guiding Light bringing further potent highlights to the album, the last a brawling insurgence of thrash filtered intimidation with sonic intrigue and melodic magnetism, 3 Eyes Of Time leaves a full stomach of pleasure and invigorating creative energy. It can be argued it also leaves a feeling of a lost opportunity in its wake as throughout there is a feeling that songs could have been pushed into greatness and adventure but it does offer complete enjoyment which is impossible to dismiss.

Chic Freak opened its bright walls to the fanfare of a brass band playing in the window, mirroring the same fresh and striking vibes of the shops designers.
Fittingly describing itself as an ‘Aladdins cave of vibrancy’ sitting on 357 Portabello Road, the boutique which also doubles as a make-up and styling studio is expertly curated by artist, designer and make up artist Tamarisk East-Rigby.

Ruby red walls were decorated in glittering designs from Pam Hogg, latex dresses from House of Harlot, Terry de Havilland shoes, Claudine bag’s, Tatty Devine jewellery, and covetable printed leggings from Tamarisk’s own collection all embodied as much personality as the designers had to offer.

Champagne and sushi were the party delicacies du jour, in attendance were a multitude of designers, artists, stylists, press and the super friendly girls from Pop PR who helped launch the stores shimmering success.
Quirky designs teamed with an effortless contemporary feel… it’s  easy to see how this Portabello boutique could fast become a firm and frequent favourite.

The trouble is that it’s not so easy to ask your girlfriends in the throes of passion where they got their outfits from, and more often than not, like me, they’re from some boutique in Camden or online lingerie company that they really want to keep to themselves. Nothing worse than turning up at a party and realising another girl’s wearing the same outfit as you and – worse still – she looks better than you do.

So I spent a lot of yesterday afternoon trying to find a suitable outfit for Claire, the girl I hook up with. Adam was easy. I was decking him out in another House of Harlot favourite of mine:

I’m pretty pleased with how it’s going so far – I’ve broken the back on the wordcount – 30,000. Not bad going. Not when yesterday was Bonfire Night and I had a full-on fireworks and bonfire in the rain to attend. It’s hard to keep writing when you have a day job and research to do!

Also, if the truth be told, I’ve never been a big reader of erotica. I’ve got a handful of books, mostly Black Lace and Nexus. But I’ve never read them for style, if you know what I’m saying! So I’m trying to keep it authentic and make sure I don’t commit any erotica faux-pas.

That’s pretty easy if you ask me. If you’re used to talking dirty, then you know what works and what doesn’t. It’s always his cock for instance. Dick is more dismissive if you ask me. It’s never his penis. That’s just too science! I’m never, ever going to call it his throbbing manhood or his purple-headed mountain or any other such banalities. I did think about having her tell him she’s going to ride him like Seabiscuit, which is a line from a British comedian I used to use with one of my exes. But no, she doesn’t say it. I thought – quite rightly – it would spoil the mood.

Anyway, I ploughed through about two or three ‘erotica’ tales yesterday and was disappointed. Mostly, apart from the two publishers I’ve already mentioned, the quality is really low. They’re like Mills and Boon romances with heaving bosoms and throbbing members. He always says cheesy things like “Nothing could make me leave you now.”

I might return to the Black Lace and Nexus. It’s more my cup of tea.

As out and proud fans of all things fabulous and latex, sexy and steampunk, gothic, punk, and let’s face it, pretty much every alternative fashion featuring rubber, exquisite corsetry and super-sharp tailoring (or all of the above), for us London Fetish Weekend has become something of an annual highlight – where else can you find a catwalk event showcasing best of alternative clothing?

Tonight’s opening LFW Fetish Fashion & Deviant Dance evening is not only a club night with a difference, but also a fetish fashion show playing host to four established designers and three additional new designers, all competing for the New Designer Of The Year Award. And what a line-up it is…

First up on the runway is Jed Phoenix, who actually – gasp! – design wearable alternative gear for men as well as women, erring on the side of industrial, gothic and bondage wear:

Second we have House Of Harlot, a well-known Irregular Voice favourite, who are great all-rounders who somehow remain impressive boundary-pushers, meaning that well, frankly, we want their latex-clad babies:

Next comes the first of the new designers, Dayne Henderson, whose ‘near-future’ cyberpunk get-ups are eye-boggling to the extreme. These outfits may well be avant-garde, but Henderson’s approach makes them fascinating art pieces as well:

The second new designer is Eustratia, whose look is just…stunning. Beautiful latexwear, often simple at first glance yet complex in content, these are easily dressed up with the addition of Eustratia’s own latex accessories line. Breathtaking:

Lady Allura’s Latex is the final new designer to be showcased, and her output is cute, cool and enviably colourful, giving her a special place in Irregular Voice’s heart. We love:

And so back we go to the more established designer and the penultimate of the evening, Moretta Designs, AKA Lady Allegra’s weird and wonderful world of 18th Century inspired costume, whose elegant corsets and full silk, satin lace and taffeta dresses are beyond gorgeous, Milady. Enchanting:

The last designer of the evening is Slaughter House Couture, which offers bespoke latex designs for men and women of every size and shape – as the plus-size model on their homepage testifies. Just divine:

Finally, before the Fetish Fashion & Deviant Dance night descends into club chaos, the winner of the London Fetish Weekend New Designer of The Year Award will be announced – and we can’t wait to hear who the expert judging panel rate most highly. Who would you put your money on?

The evening was a true one-off event that played host to some of the creme de la creme of the Rubber Fetish industry. Winners included Libidex for Best Creative Rubber, House of Harlot for Best Full Rubber, Bondinage for Best Rubber Uniform, and D-vote and Atsuko Kudo for Best Male and Female Rubber respectively.

Anyone who’s paid attention to the autumn/winter trends will know that the fetish look is coming back in full force this season, this time decidedly darker and kinkier. While the previous seasons it has been about being provocative and showing the right amount of skin with lots if lace, this season we are heading more into the extremes of fetish.

I for one like it.

Though it’s obviously a trend you couldn’t wear on a day-to-day basis, there is something quite alluring about the predominance of latex on the catwalk.

So when I spotted these latex gloves in both Elle and Love magazine, I knew they were something special.

These gloves are from British fetish brand House of Harlot in North London and apart from being absolutely amazing, they only cost £22. They look like the perfect accessory for a party that will give an outfit a decidedly darker edge to it.

I can’t wait to get a pair myself.

Combining fashion and art with music is what Leelou does best, this is accurately exhibited through her new video for “Gasoline.”  The video for the first single off Leelou’s forthcoming EP, Kiss. Death. Love. Come. is a spectacular piece of art filmed underwater to depict the idea portrayed in the lyrics “Take this gasoline, drown the fear in me.”  Styled by BOOM Style, fashions on Leelou include those from designers House of Harlot, Bordelle, and Hannah Martin amongst others.

The video for “Gasoline” is a piece that stands out proudly in the thick of aesthetically mundane videos that are released so often.
