I have 2 old style medicine cabinets I received off Craigslist.

I have this vision of somehow using them to create an activity center or a message center or something…

Hoping some of my blog friends/ readers can help me come up with something… Here is a stock photo to give you an idea of what I am dealing with…

I have glass shelves that can go inside or since the inside is metal I can use it for magnets…

I stopped at ReStore the other day and found white tiles up to 12 x12 and thought I could put a white tile on the front (mirror) along with some cork and create a message center… But not sure what to use the inside for …

My other thought was a magnetic activity center but not sure how the mirror would work into it… I can mount it on a wall if I need to, but would prefer the “activity center” be mobile somehow…

Any ideas? Don’t worry if you can’t think of something, I have a few other finds that I’m hoping someone will be able to inspire me on…

Today is the last day of our family vacation at home, and tomorrow it’s back to work and dayca

Today is the last day of our family vacation at home, and tomorrow it’s back to work and daycare for the three of us. It is a day for taking down the Christmas decorations, sweeping up all of the (many, many) needles because I insist on a real tree, getting the laundry done, doing some cooking for the week, and generally doing the tidying up that we so decadently let go over our break.

It was satisfying to take down the tree, freeing up a few precious square feet of floor space that we forgot we had, and letting the sunshine pour in through the unblocked windows. Ahem. It was also nice to get the new toys put away, decrumb surfaces, and give the bathroom a much-needed cleaning.

Will this be the post where I find the fabulous in cleaning my toilet? No, no it will not. I might never write that post.

This is the post where I discuss what a fabulous thing it is to set about completing a task like housecleaning, and along the way you are able to put your hands on everything you need. Laundry detergent? Check. Working vaccuum? Check. Proper cleaning supplies for all surfaces? Check. Ingredients for the meal I want to prepare? Check. Willing helpers? Check.

The phenomenon described above is not an everyday occurrence around the Fabulous household, and I think the factors that contributed to it deserve some individual attention, in the form of a numbered list.

1) We live in a place where there are items that are readily available and affordable to make these tasks more pleasant and time-efficient. I think that it is not realistic or helpful to be so relentlessly positive that I reframe every undesirable chore and action by looking at it in this context (“I shouldn’t complain about cleaning cat vomit off the rug! At least I have a rug, and can afford food for my cat to binge on and purge!”), but I am grateful for it nonetheless.

2) We have the financial means to shop in bulk, and the storage space to keep large amounts of things on hand. I like the environmental, economical, and time saving features of buying things in large quantities. While I will not claim to know what it’s like to live in abject poverty, there were cash-strapped days in my not-so-distant past where my fellow grad assistant roommate and I had no money for groceries (though we did have a breadmaker and mix and some fancy jam that carried us through – strange times). I certainly wasn’t in a position until recently to outlay any sort of money on a huge tub of laundry detergent, nor did I have the space to keep it in. The fact that I will probably not have to buy laundry detergent again for years is oddly thrilling.

3) My husband (should I refer to him as Mr. Fabulous? That seems a little lame) and I have made a lot of progress in the last many months on who knows where the butter is. It’s an ongoing process, but we’re in a good groove with dividing household labor 51%/49%, with both of us trying to do the 51%.

4) I have made big strides with overall organization and planning ahead. Please forgive my immodest moment, but I take some pride in this. In a lot of areas of my life I rely on my memory to get me out of jams where I have been disorganized or not planned appropriately. Sometimes, this is not possible. My first vacation that I took without my parents was in my late teens, and I went to Disneyworld with some friends. I totally neglected to pack underwear. There is no way to fake underwear. Nor is there any way to procure (adult) underwear when you are marooned in Disneyworld in 1996. With a suitcase full of cute sundresses. Fourteen years later, I have the ingredients in my cupboard to make a spontaneous cake or pot of chili, and my baby has not yet once had to go diaperless out in public. Excuse me while I go pat myself on the back.

So, Fabulous Thing #3: Having the means, the motivation, and the mate to set my house back in order.

The kids and I have been talking a lot about our New Year’s Resolutions. We’ve talked about the importance of setting goals and working towards them. I urged the kids to come up with a few resolutions for 2010. Here is what they each came up with, all on their own…

Brenna- read scriptures and go to church and be kind

Joshua- be as good at playing the drums as he is at wrestling and exercise every day

Maddie- follow Jesus and be a cheerleader

Braden-

Personally, I’ve resolved to be more committed to my personal scripture study. Prayers, both personal and family, are easy to remember. Even family scripture study is easy to accomplish each day. But my own personal scripture study is frequently bumped to the last thing on my list when it really ought to be first. It makes me sad and it needs to change. I need the strong foundation that personal scripture study brings to my day. So far in 2010, I have met my goal and studied my scriptures every single day.

And every year I always resolve to do better with homeschool. As the kids get older each year, I always need to “up my game” to meet their growing needs. So I resolve to be more patient and more consistent, and to make school more fun and more challenging and more rewarding than it ever has been before. I am looking forward to another great year of homeschooling!

I believe that Rick has set goals to study his scriptures daily also and to get in good shape- through exercise and a healthy diet- in 2010.

As a family, we’ve set goals to always invite the spirit into our home. We talked with the kids and explained that this can happen through service and kindness, through obedience, by keeping our home clean, and by remembering daily scripture study and prayer.

Here’s to a great year in 2010!

She set a goal to get rid of 721 things (that is an average of only 2 per day… realistic…), I got to thinking I can do that, especially since I had purged my own closet yesterday and today was working on the boys’ bedroom getting ready to move their bunk bed out and put in two twin bed captain’s beds (we will be moving the dressers out this week.)… Any way, I realized in just 2 days I had managed to get rid of (donating or selling) 50 items… and the boys’ room isn’t done yet… Now the next area to hit will be the classroom and the home-school closet as we have tons of things we just aren’t using and most likely won’t… So during the boys independent work time this coming week I will be purging books, workbooks, textbooks, and anything else home-school related to donate to our local co-op as well as Goodwill. Oh and I will be purging the mudroom as well (hoping to get rid of some of ceramic supplies and such… wonder if I can sell them on Craigslist…). If you are up for the challenge: 31 days of Organizing for a better 2010, check out the blog..

We’re two days into our experiment! Happy new year to everybody!

Making lunch to go

The first of these days is not really worth mentioning, consumeless and sustainability-wise. We spent New Year’s Eve at friends in The Hague and New Year’s Day at Eise’s family. We went home after dinner so we didn’t have to purchase anything ourselves yesterday. We did however leave for The Hague right before lunch time on Thursday, so we brought our own sandwiches! Consumeless act number one.

Today was more of a day according to our new lifestyle. We did nothing special (doing some new year’s cleaning) and there were hardly any moments we had to think twice before doing something. We did buy six energy saving light bulbs to replace the last ‘normal’ bulbs in our house. And Eise had to go to both the supermarket and the organic food store (in stead of the super market only) to buy organic ingredients for our food this weekend. We had dinner completely according to our rules: we ate pumpkin, with onions, garlic and goat’s cheese (all organic) from the oven, risotto (not organic, but we still had it in stock) and (organic) salad.

Dinner

Dinner brought us a (tiny) dilemma though. We usually leave the oven door open after taking out the food in order to let out the remaining heat. However, we have a oven/microwave oven combination which has an automatic light that switches on when the door is open. The question now is: does the heat from the oven that adds to the temperature in our kitchen outweigh the energy that is used for the light? I think not, but I’m not sure…

A related problem would arise (we just thought) when we want to heat something to drink. In winter, we like to drink hot apple juice with cinnamon (De Werf-style). What would be better: heating the apple juice in the microwave oven or in a pan on the stove? We have a halogen stove, but I have no clue whether heating something on this stove requires more energy than heating it in the microwave oven.

It’s not so easy, this applying consuming less and consuming sustainably to all aspects of our daily life!

A question that was asked a couple of times the last few days was how essential we thought visiting family and friends was (refering to our first rule, saying we only buy things if we really need them). We haven’t made up any rules about this except for the transportation rules. We have been thinking about this issue and decided not to make a special rule for this. The idea of this experiment was to try to live our lives as consumeless and as sustainably as possible, and our lives include visiting family and friends. Of course we will keep the transportation rules in mind all year!

Finally, a shocking fact I just came across reading National Geographic’s Green Guide (which I found in our stack of magazines I was sorting out), related to cotton production (which we’ve dicussed in the post Inspiration as well): “Conventional cotton production uses more than 18 percent of the world’s pesticides”! We’re seriously considering to never buy any other cotton than organic cotton in the future. Which is not too difficult anymore. Most mainstream stores (H&M, C&A, HEMA) have cotton basics these days. And buying organic jeans is not difficult as well (Kuyichi, Levi’s, Ascension, and probably many more).

So, this really is the start of our experiment to live as consumeless and as sustainable as possible for a year. We hope to hear from all of you, so please let us know what you think of our rules, our experiences and our blog! We are happy to receive any tips and suggestions!

Whether it is leaking taps fixed or can be removed, dresser, health and family reconstruction can be quite tedious. Surprisingly, a great damage can be in the wrong place only a small amount of water. So, if your home facing the reconstruction of health, you must be prepared to work, and then start the project. Prevention is better than trying to solve a problem.

If the redevelopment, as the overall restructuring plan to improve it is a very good time and some pipesTo prevent future pipeline work. What is the project you are about to try to be more easily achieved, if you do just to do an evaluation and planning, your homework first.

An important step in the use, unless the Health and Family into part of the design as a whole is to ensure that the shut-off valve installed in each region of water. All sinks, faucets, bathtubs, water heaters, commodes, and should be a shut-off valve to reduce their position. This can save a bundle to the leakageOr overflow occurs.

Another factor, it is important that you pipes and pipe fittings in the system conversion of your home location of pipelines. Is important that the layout, convenience, and water to the water plan.

If you plan to prevent the conversion or elimination of pipeline problems, you begin to search and find the root of the problem. Convenience is not a general rule. Health management is often difficult to achieve. Do not letNo wonder some of the walls or floor for your trouble spots to visit. This is especially when your house is already built in the concrete slab.

For the leak, the first areas of accumulated moisture. Because the exact location of the source as close as possible, before you start entering a cavity, or the first floor walls and a leaking ceiling, your best to isolate exactly where the problem started.

As the drain plug, oil and fatIs often the perpetrators. Sometimes, the production line on your hair dryer to melt the lowest point of the problem.

It’s 2010! Happy new year. And decade.

All of my friends have bought kittens this year and they’re obviously trying to kill me. What is with that? Like five at least of my good friends just came up with this plan to make my social time with them insanely painful. I can’t even look at a cat without sneezing my face off, but they’re so sweet that I can’t resist cuddling them until my brain goes “WHOA THAT THING’S ON THE BLACK LIST” and starts world war three with my eyeballs. They’re like tiny fuzzy allergy grenades with legs.

One of my friends' kittens...and a massive problem.

So now living with a cat has actually become a dire possibility, and I’m going to start training my body to get used to their shameless and frankly delinquent cattiness. I’m going to have to surround myself with the scampering little fur balls until I stop feeling like sneezy, puffy crap. So if living with a cat does happen, I’m going to become addictively dependent on Reactine. And learn to avoid rubbing the kitten all over my face maybe.

2010 started off right. We had some friends of ours over for dinner. My house was full of the sound of three happy little boys running around and laughing. I love when my house sounds like that. We’re going to do a repeat on Sunday and gather for football and good times. This is more like it. If this is any indication of what the rest of the year will be like then I think this will be a great year!

So how about you? How did 2010 start out for you?

Happy New Year everyone!

Wow, it’s finally 2010. Ten years after the much anticipated Y2K event has long since come and gone we appear to still be here; (dys)functional computers and all. Can you even recall what you were doing ten years ago on this date? I was watching a national TV station that chose to broadcast 24-hrs of New Years occurring around the world. What a site it was as each hour brought yet another geographic location a new year free of any world ending events.

Looking back upon the last ten years of America’s history, the world’s history, and yes, our own personal history, we see a full range of events. Some events we would love to repeat; some we wish never occurred. The bottom line is that over the last ten years we have survived and even thrived. Good times and bad times come and go. Life is full of different seasons. People come into our lives and people leave our lives. Sometimes we understand these comings and goings while other times we struggle to accept them.

As I look back I recall my own comings and goings. What I learned a long time ago was that if something was meant to be in my life it would be, if it was not, it would not. No amount of struggle was required if it was to be in my life and no amount of struggle would change anything if it were not to be in my life. This was the case whether the “it” was a job, relationship, or possession. When I made peace with this truth, something magical began to happen. I was able to maintain my peace no matter what was coming or going and just about 100% of the time I was able to look back in retrospect and understand why I had what I had in my life.

As we enter into a new year we have an opportunity for a fresh start. We can choose to take this season to analyze what is working for us and what is not. We can take ownership for where we are now or blame others for our circumstances. Finally, we can choose what 2010 will look like for us no matter what comes and goes though out the year. Yes, what an amazing gift we each have, the gift of choice, action, and behavior.
