When I got married my mom gave me her old kitchenware for our new apartment. They had been sitting in boxes under my grandpa’s garage for a few years. We went through the boxes together cleaning and sorting what survived, plates, bowls, mugs, pots, pans and silverware. I was and am very grateful for this mismatched assortment of housewares, lol because buying all those little things adds up and can become very expensive. It’s also very difficult to cook with limited utensils.

The Yellow Bowl

Among this assortment of dishes was a single yellow tupperware bowl. I didn’t really notice it at first, but it has since become my favorite bowl. We had it as long as I can remember. Oddly enough it brings back warm and fuzzy feelings whenever I use it. lol It’s also in really good condition. Lately I’ve be come a little bit of a vintage tupperware collector. My mom laughed the first time she heard me refer to her old containers as ‘vintage’. I bought a few items for my collection from ebay, but some had to be thrown out because they smelled like cigarette smoke or something else funky. So now I get most of my tupperware from thrift stores, where I can smell it before I buy it and I don’t have to pay for shipping. These containers are still very useful. I use mine all the time. They are great for storage because almost all the pieces come with air tight lids. I love the lids. When I was growing up my mom always kept sugar in them, one with white and one with brown. Never once did ants get to them.

My most recent thrift store find was a unique set of cups, or tumblers. These cups are not the normal harvest colors, brown, yellow, orange, or green, the iconic 70’s vintage Tupperware colors, but they are clear with a colorful printed design on them.

Rare Vintage Tupperware

I’ve never seen anything like it before. Have you? If you have anymore info about these cups I’d like to hear about it. I posed it on yahoo answers to get a date range and most people say 80’s.

I love glass stemware! What’s not to enjoy about their awesome heights, shapes and designs? They make ordinary glass tumblers seem so … BORING!

This pair of glasses feature the beloved Anthurium, found everywhere in Hawaii, even the wild. Their beauitful flowers come in an array of colors from red to purple and always grace every Hawaii farmer’s market available.

Red Anthuriums are extremely popular in Hawaii during Valentine’s but you can enjoy them all year long – as we do here in Hawaii:)

Makes a great wedding or anniversary gift.

The artwork is my original design and I paint by free hand all glassware using a non-toxic glass paint, allow the pieces to properly cure and then bake them at a high temperature to ensure a permanent, long lasting and functional piece of art! Each glass bears my signature and is hand painted with Aloha!

Fun Tips: When you’re not using them for your favorite beverage, use them as candle holders! Put them on display with a tea light inside to reflect their beautiful colors! They can also serve as sophisticated parfait or dessert glasses- how fun is that?!

Although glassware is dishwasher safe (top rack), I recommend hand washing to protect and extend the life of each piece.

Handmade with Aloha!

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this item go to charity.

Grotesque Vase

Christopher Dresser (1834 – 1904) was a renowned industrial designer and botanist. Today, I’m more concerned with his work as a designer. Be aware though that his study of nature greatly influenced his creations. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Dresser moved around quite a bit with his family, until at age 13, he was accepted into the Government School of Design, now known as the Royal College of Art. This is where he received training in design and plants. He lectured and wrote 3 successful books on botany, but really began to design in 1860.

Dresser designed wallpaper, ceramics, textiles, stained glass, and metal-ware, mostly with the intention of providing the common people with alluring well crafted products. He is said to be one of the first industrial designers and was a strong supporter of machine manufacturing. Understanding the benefit of standardizing parts, he reduced the production costs for his manufacturers. Dresser designed everything that you would need for your kitchen table and then some.

Also, influenced by other countries, Dresser had an immense appreciation for Japanese culture. In fact, he was the first European designer to be commissioned to visit Japan after they reopened their borders in 1854.

Dresser died in Mulhouse, France in 1904. In his lifetime, he submitted designs to over 50 different firms.

It’s ironic that I was drawn to the more ornate piece in the collection, Grotesque Vase. Personally, I tend to lean towards the modern (simple clean lines with minimal decoration). Amazingly, a number of Dresser’s pieces could be considered “contemporary” and can hold their own against current designers. What’s more, some of his pieces are still being manufactured. Alessi, a design company, makes his oil and vinegar set, toast rack, and round tray. o açúcar, 1 colher (café) de sal e a manteiga e bata bem até
obter uma mistura fofa. Junte 5 gemas, uma de cada vez, batendo
sempre, até ficar homogêneo. Desligue a batedeira, acrescente 3

lascas e torrada. Leve ao forno pré-aquecido a 180 graus em
banho-maria até ficar firme (+/- 1 hora). Espere esfriar
completamente.

The best insight I’ve heard since my arrival in New York came from Emanuel, the janitor at the East

The best insight I’ve heard since my arrival in New York came from Emanuel, the janitor at the East New York high school I taught at this summer. East New York, conveniently bordered by the Cypress Hills cemetery, was where I did my practice teaching. “Convenient” because East New York, according to wiki, rates the highest for violence and murders in New York. Some notable famous people from the area include rappers: Masta Killa, Lil Mama and Uncle Murda. Though the statistics may have alarmed me slightly before I began, I found the neighborhood to be quite pleasant. In fact, more people said hello to me while I was walking to school from the subway than any other neighborhood I’ve been to. My students, though I was told some are gang members, were respectful and they completed everything I asked of them. I even got them to down their guards to play silly games and do some cartwheels in the courtyard.

Anyway, on a day when I was leaving later than the other teachers, Emanuel offered to give me a ride to the subway. Not one to turn down a ride, I hopped in. Emanuel had never completed high school himself. He prides himself on his two beautiful and smart daughters. He has been shot three times, stabbed, has fallen from a building, and did time on the streets. Even though Emanuel was not traditionally educated, he is a very smart man. His education was attained through survival, not because things were handed to him.

We were discussing where my next apartment would be. He gave it to me straight. You can get an expensive place in Park Slope near your university or further away and you ride the subway. You pay with your money, or you pay with your time. Either way, someone’s gotta pay.

A month later, numerous instances have made me remember Emanuel’s words.

I’ve been exploring some furniture options, toggling back and forth between Ikea and Macy’s. Though Ikea has some nice furniture, you have to assemble it. You pay with your money, or you pay with your time, (and in this particular case, I may be paying with my thumb, since I am not that adept with a hammer.)

There’s a laundry mat in the building Katie and I will be living in. Landlord Steve (aka Lord Stephen) said that the workers there would wash the clothes for us. It’s about $20, as opposed to $8. You pay with your money, or you pay with your time.

There have been a couple instances in the city, when I can choose between the subway, making a couple of connections, or a cab. You pay with your money, or you pay with your time.

Today I had to mail a package for my niece’s birthday. The UPS store was two blocks away. The post office was five. You pay with your money, or you pay with your time.

I do enjoy going out to a nice restaurant on the weekends. There are two options. I can take myself out with a friend, pay, and be done with it. The second option is to go on a date. He has a great job so he pays, but I have to paint my nails, apply makeup, curl my hair, choose an outfit, change, choose a second outfit, and maintain telephone relations for a week. You pay with your money, or you pay with your time.

I really enjoy the freedom, being able to follow my intuition and initiative, I loved to figure out how to develop a project that seems to be very simple but it’s not, it’s like a puzzle, piece by piece…

What are your future expectations?

I would really love to live of my work and to have a “real shop” with handmade products, not only mines but from fellow artisans from Etsy, Dawanda, etc. That is why I am dedicating a lot of time to the non-creative area of everything related to marketing, finance, legal aspects, etc. basically the non fun part but essential aspect to carry on a business , Yin and Yang, like life!
