This classic 1977 movie is an ever green coming of age movie that has its roots imbibed in the American culture. And it not just catapulted John Travolta to fame but also the Bee Gees who were the key behind most of the popular tracks such as “Stayin Alive”, “How Deep is your Love”, “More than a Woman”, “Night Fever” and “Jive Talking” not to mention “Boogie Shoes” by KC and the Sunshine Band.

Onto the story, John Travolta stars as Tony Manero, an Italian American, who works at a hardware store in the day and is a disco star by night. His seemingly uncomplicated life revolves around his job, family and dancing at Odyssey 2001 with his friend and dance partner Annette, and hanging out with his gang – Joey, Bobby C and Double J. During one of the rehearsals at a dance studio for a upcoming dance competition, Tony chances upon Stephanie Magano who is equally committed to dance and is a pro at dancing.

This spurs Tony to break off the partnership with Annette and pursue Stephanie to partner him for the competition. A reluctant but aloof Stephanie agrees and together they diligently practice for the competition while getting to know each other at the same time. Meanwhile, changes come in the form of Tony’s older brother leaving the church and Bobby C desparately trying to win Tony’s friendship and guidance. The competition night arrives, Tony and Stephanie put on a great performance but are outnumbered by a Brazilian couple. However, they win the award but Tony brashly hands over their prize to the Brazilian couple, and goes off with his friends to hang out at the Brooklyn bridge.

Tragedy strikes in the form of Bobby C’s death when he tries to mime the others’ dangerous antics on the bridge. The rest of the gang realize the enormity of the situation and return home more sobered up. Tony then decides to move to Manhattan and apologizes to Stephanie and tries to salvage his relationship with her. This is where the film ends.

Its a film very beautifully taken and portrayed. While certain scenes might be considered crude, it just forms part of the whole concept of growing up into adulthood. But if you’d compare it with the current chickflicks or coming of age movies, it is definitely bold for the 70s flick. I enjoyed watching it as much as my parents had done then. The music is absolutely magical and melodic. There is that perpetual rhythm that you’d dance to anyday.

Os dois irmãos sobreviventes do grupo Bee Gees estão se preparando para uma nova apresentação, seis anos depois da morte do seu irmão, Maurice Gibb, de acordo com as notícias.

Robin Gibb disse à Radio BBC que tem estado com seu irmão mais velho Barry em Miami e eles estão prontos para um show juntos, planejando uma série de datas ao vivo.

Maurice Gibb morreu subitamente em 2003, com 53 anos, de complicações após uma operação para corrigir uma torção no intestino. Ao mesmo tempo os irmãos disseram que deixariam de atuar como os Bee Gees, após 45 anos juntos.

I used to make fun of the Bee Gees.

In the late 70s, it was easy to imitate and poke fun of Barry Gibb’s high falsetto. It didn’t care that I pissed off my aunt Angie, who was (and still is) a devoted Bee Gees fan. They were, after all, not the Beatles. Angie played the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever with absolute fervor. While she danced and sang along, I imitated Barry and Robin, and scorned Maurice (the one that looked “funny”). I hated disco, and that’s what they represented to me.

At some point during their heyday, they issued a double live album. Alongside their more contemporary hits, they performed some older material that struck my brain in a funny way. These songs included “New York Mining Disaster 1941,” “Gotta Get a Message to You,” “Run to Me,” and “Massachusetts.” All of a sudden, I wasn’t imitating them anymore. The songs got me right in the heart, as if I’d heard them before.

Suddenly, there was an album in Angie’s collection called Gold, which covered 60s Bee Gees’ pop song brilliance. Songs like “Words” and “World” oozed from the speakers, and I couldn’t get enough. The song that floored me then (and still does to this day) is “To Love Somebody.” Barry wrote this after meeting with one of his idols, Otis Redding. The Bee Gees’ manager told Barry to write a song for Otis to perform, and Barry’s response was this classic pop tune. I still get goosebumps thinking about the first time I heard this song in its entirely.

So, for a while, I could tolerate 60s Bee Gees, and the soundtrack they provided for the Alan Parker film Melody. There is something heartbreaking about Barry’s “First of May” that makes you want to cry. His “Give Your Best” is one of the most fun songs to listen to; it reminds me of old friends and the folly of being young.

But that didn’t stop me from loathing the whole disco era Bee Gees phenomena – until Clover Club Paul showed me the light.

On a trip to his house to get more gear for a Clover Club jam session, Paul played “How Deep Is Your Love” in his car. I groaned aloud, something to the effect of “Man, not this. Why this?” While waiting for our red light to go green, he said, “Listen to that clean, simple production. The melody stays in your head when you’re not thinking about it. The vocal harmonies are inventive and crisp. How can you not like this song? When you get a chance, listen to it as a piece of music, not as disco.”

Paul, of course, was right. I bought the sheet music and discovered that it was inventive, and a complete bitch to learn (it took me weeks to figure it out). Once I did, I couldn’t stop playing it because it was fun. I played it on acoustic guitar at some shindig my ex-girlfriend dragged me to, and the girls at the party could not get enough of that song. Seems that girls really dig love songs for some odd reason.

Not long ago, I purchased a DVD called This Is Where I Came In, which documents the Bee Gees’s history from the late 50s onward, just before Maurice’s untimely death. I guess the old saying is correct; it’s never too late to learn new lessons. I learned that making fun of my aunt Angie’s beloved Bee Gees was just ignorance on my part. I also learned that Barry Gibb and his brothers provided a soundtrack for millions of people for decades. Not many artists can claim this, but it holds true for the brothers Gibb. I learned that there are road maps to greatness buried in their songs. Every songwriter should study the writing of Barry Gibb.

Thanks, Angie! I will still send you original 60s and 70s Bee Gees vinyl when I locate them.

Happy birthday, Barry. It finally came into focus for me, but it took 30-plus years to realize that you’ve been a part of the soundtrack of my life all of this time. Your songs are awe-inspiring and classic. How would you like to work together on a song sometime?

Summer Night

It’s sad to see the first half of summer fade away so quickly. Kind of reminds me of a Bee Gees’ song.

“And you come to me

on a summer breeze

keep me warm in your love

then you softly leave”

I wish I was more productive–actually–I am productive, but not in the way that I would like to be. Tutoring English to three international students, working a day-to-day job as a mailman, commuting like crazy, managing money, dealing with sickness. My palette is quite full these days. However, I’ve only composed one song, finished zero books, and wrote very little rap lyrics or stories. Something is definitely wrong here.

As I’m writing this I realize that this might be a small metaphor to certain issues in my life–issues I’m sure everyone deals with on a frequent basis.

Money and happiness.

I’m making money right now. I’m doing well. I’m finally able to eat more than one meal a day. But I’m not as happy as I would be if I tapped into my artistic abilities. Maybe I should take this as a blessing–a warning–of things to come or things that could come.

Speaking of blessings, I ran into my fellowship today on the streets. It’s really good seeing them. Although we’re not close close friends, I feel like they are very genuine people. It might also be due to the fact that I could see not only the good in them, but also the things they rather hide. Unfortunately for them, I’m pretty decent at reading people.

It’s 12:02AM right now. I hope I can wake up early tomorrow.

One of my students took me out to eat with his friends today. It was a humbling meal. Thank you J.

I realized that translating my memory into a video is a really good way of preserving it, and this was what I did exactly with this song. I’m glad that I could piece the tune together to form something upbeat. I don’t normally play fast numbers cuz they’re just more difficult and the concentration required totally blows me away. I emerged kinda dazed after recording it – you just want the mind to focus but on the other hand, you want to inject a touch of emotion as you play the piece. An example of balancing act crisis!

I’ve also tried to ‘bend’ the sound of the harmonics by exerting opposite pressure on the neck of the guitar and the body, trying to do a ‘Tommy Emmanuel’ – you’ll find it near the end of the song.

If you are seeing this video, hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy playing it – just don’t come out dazed after listening to it.
