When you decide to stretch your ear lobes, the number one thing you should do is read and gather all of the information. You should go to a reliable website or ask your local tattoo shop since their are is a ton of information on the web and a lot of it is more opinion than facts. When you start to stretch, you want to do this as slowly as possible. If you stretch from an 18 gauge hole (a normal earring size) up to anything besides a 16 gauge stretcher, you’re risking damaging your ears as you’ll get into the habit of skipping sizes (another topic, I’ll discuss soon!) and this can be dangerous, especially when you get to a bigger size. I can say from personal experiences that I started from nothing, a normal 18 gauge hole and I went directly to an 8 gauges, without a taper. This was a ridiculous idea, but I was excited. Stretching your ears can be fun and addicting, but it’s really worth it to wait and move sizes slowly, which I will also discuss. When I stretched that fast, I tore literal chucks out of my ear lobe and I am now getting ready to size up to 9/16″ and I am still paying for what I did 4 years ago.

You Never Want To Skip Gauge Sizes

To safely stretch from nothing, you can begin by of course, getting the right size. The best thing you can do for your ears is buy a taper. They help you slowly go up in size and you do not want to shove these straight through your ears. Your lobes are skin and they can rip if you do this too fast. You want to sanitize your hands and your jeweler as this would be defined and as open wound with a possibility of tearing. You want to use some kind of lubricant that is water-based so that you don’t clog anything (if there is possible tearing, you don’t want an infection) and it will slide in easier. Vitamin E oil and Jojoba oil (both good to use after you’ve stretched!) are good to use for stretching, do not use Vaseline. Do not force the taper through. I go slowly a bit at a time. If it starts to get too painful (stretching can be painful, but you should not be in so much pain that you’re wincing), take the taper out and wait a few weeks. The more you push the taper through when it’s not ready, the more you will irritate your ears, they will swell up, and you will risk tearing your ear lobe. The best thing you can do when starting from nothing is to go slow and be patient, this will get you the result you want in the end!
