Weeeelll… It’s been a while. Not sure where I got up to but I think I was starting to learn Wonderwall. I’ve fumbled a fair bit more since then. Wonderwall is now starting to feel straightforward and I can now play the whole song reasonably well.
Part of the reason is that I got myself a guitar teacher, Lewis Collins. He’s been able to point out a few bad habits so I can correct those. I was anchoring with my right hand when I was picking, and that was slowing me down a fair bit. Strumming through Wonderwall still took a little while, and part of that is because I really struggle to hear the guitar cleanly in most of the tracks that I’m interested in. I couldn’t hear the pattern properly, so I was concentrating quite a lot on ‘learning’ the strumming patterns in a ‘down, down, down up, down’ type fashion. While it’s sometimes useful to look at this briefly, I’ve found the best way is to just listen to the rhythm and strumming with it to get close. What’s also helped is Guitar Pro. Downloaded onto my ipad (I got the full Mac version as well after a bit), it lets you download tracks and play them in a midi format, isolating specific voices (instruments), and playing them at any speed you want to listen at. (I.e. I can isolate the guitar track and listen to the rhythm, and slow things down to play along until I can go at full speed). This has been a massive boost, and having Lewis knowing what I’m supposed to be learning motivates me to practise more so I can show I’m improving.
With Wonderwall ‘learned’ (BIG difference between learning it and playing it smoothly and flawlessly), and just needing practise to improve. Lewis suggested learning ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’ by the Blue Oyster Cult. I’ve always thought that sounded tricky, and I wasn’t wrong. Having said that, it’s mainly a matter of practising a few fairly straightforward sections. The challenge I have are numerous, but I think the top three are
1- I struggle to reliably move my fingers between chords. The first couple of changes are ok, and then I start to lose position on the frets AND strings and play buzzing or blunted notes.

2 – Moving between powerchords on different frets. Discovered recently while beginning to learn ‘How You Remind me’ by Nickelback, and definitely still a fretting hand issue, but different in that it’s moving up and down the fretboard rather than simply changing strings with my hand in largely the same position.

3 – a little less of a problem, and seeming to get better as I practise more, hitting individual strings can be really tough! Even when I’m looking at the strings, hitting 5433, then 6543, 6543, 6543, and back to 5433 seems to get messed up. Bearing in mind this is essentially an arpeggio (all the strings are played in a row, almost a chord played very slowly) and I’m not skipping strings or going up and down in a pattern, it’s made me realise more than ever how skilful good guitar players have to be.

With ALL of these issues, if I’m able to relax and just play, letting things happen naturally, everything becomes a lot easier. The real challenge is that I’m very conscious of not being able to do these things well and that makes it very hard to relax and just let it go. I AM improving, slowly, but surely, and each time I nail a section or even a simple chord change correctly (just so that it sounds ok is tolerable ) I start to feel I’m moving forwards. At some point, with practise and commitment, it’ll get more natural and I’ll stop thinking about it so much and play better for it.

Another guitar related happening is my discovery of the Ukulele. I bought a uke while browsing in a music shop and spotting it there. I picked it up and decided it was so cheap it was worth getting, even if I just learned ’5 Years Time’ by Noah and the Whale. Anyway, long story short I really enjoy playing the ukulele, and in some ways find it easier. It gives me a break from stressing on the guitar (which I really want to do), and lets me relax playing the uke (which is easier, but not as much of a life goal so less stressy). It also keeps my fingers hardening up if I’m slacking on guitar practise.
Fingers are much better nowadays, by the way. Calloused up and rarely very painful, I still get hard bits of callous forming and eventually flaking off, but in general I’m starting to get simply ‘toughened’ fingers. Not calloused, just thicker skin on the pads which can take more punishment.

All good, hopefully not so long before my next blog.

By: Jerry Landry

Never made it as a wise man… Didn’t really make it as a Rock Band either

The grumblings of contempt for Nickelback can be heard as readily as their music. Boasting a robust discography, Nickelback is an interesting, albeit talentless, phenomenon. A band that is so accepted as being awful, yet somehow still one of the most popular acts in North America. The consumptive distaste for Nickelback is more than palpable. It’s extreme. Their singles reach the radio, and then listeners turn the dial. The singing of Chad Kroeger hits our hammer, anvil, and stirrup, and the sound is rejected as fast as it was processed. Nickelback has that “Christian Rock Music Quality” where you can hear just a couple notes and immediately go “oh shit, this is shitty music.” As many rock bands have innovated before, Nickelback has done the complete opposite, and stuck with the formula.

Their songs (possibly excluding “How you Remind Me”) are not even likeably bad. They aren’t “cute” like frozen-in-time 80s pop songs, or even pitifully listenable like Chumbuwumba’s “Tubthumper.” They are just awful. And oxymoronically, the purest form of awful.

Whatever it takes to make it in music, Nickelback accomplished. Whatever else it takes to succeed, they missed the mark wildly. How they did this is in-and-of-itself is very intriguing. How Nickelback has sold 50 million albums worldwide is preposterous. Their success overshadowed by their perceived lack of talent is perplexing. But let’s try to arrive at a solution that gets us out of this mysterious grey area. And possibly figure out why such a hated band is so marketable.

Government Conspiracy?

Not only does Nickelback’s slightly rugged image not mesh with teenage girls, but also their rock sound is completely unacceptable to those of us that have actually heard real rock music. Something about possibly flat-ironed dirty blonde hair just won’t make a Front Man a Poster Boy for sustainable stardom. Along with refusing to tinker with a style that barely gained them notoriety, Nickelback has just gotten by on being reproducibly awful.

But from Nickelback’s perspective, how bad can it be? Somebody has to be buying their work, and their fans (whomever they are) are making these guys are rich… Unless… NO… it couldn’t be… a Canadian espionage project and/or government conspiracy!

Many of you may remember a little band known as “Rush.” Back in the late 70s and early 80s, this progressive rock band dominated the airwaves and could be heard coming from the suburban garages in just about any neighbourhood. In those times, this band was as on top of the world as any Canadian band thought could be possible. But then, unlike their slow rolling rise to fame, Rush fell hard from the mainstream. They suffered a premature climax during the mid-80s and then inexplicably fell off the face of the Earth. As far as most people were concerned, they left without a trace. Conspiracy? Most likely. But just knowing that an indisputably talented band like Rush could be “gotten rid of” makes things all the more mesmerizing, and begs the question as to just why the US Government has yet to make Nickelback disappear.

Perhaps this conspiracy is just a conspiracy in the way of being the exact opposite of a conspiracy.

Lack of Variety?

“Chad Kroeger” is to “Nickelback” what “Empty Space” is to “Nothing.”

Hate, like love, is passionate… and there are a lot of people out there that hate Nickelback with as much unfiltered passion as possible.

Perhaps in the same way that we have Bieber and Tebow mania, America eats up the mediocre and negatively polar just like it pounds back McDonald’s Snack Wraps. Cheap entertainment and quick satisfaction have once again proved extremely profitable in the case of Nickelback. Adhering to the song structure song-in and song-out has maintained their sales, and has equally maintained their long list of critical adversaries. Maybe they’re essentially selling out, but why not stick to what works if it’s all about the bottom line and a good record deal? When you don’t have much talent to waste, maybe it’s best if you do what is needed to stay afloat.

Many seem to gripe at the idea that everything Nickelback produces sounds the same as everything else they record. Well, they must then share similar criticisms of Metallica, Linkin Park, Korn, Three Six Mafia, Pearl Jam, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band, R.E.M., and the like.

This can’t be the only reason… there must be a deeper issue.

Or Something More?

But what is that deeper issue? Is it in their lyrics that are peppered with sex, drugs, and prostitutes? No, that’s nothing out of the ordinary for any rock band. But possibly it’s the fact that they stick to this formula, time and time again. Just as this essay has stuck to the formula of ceaselessly mentioning that Nickelback sticks to the formula. And like Nickelback, never wavering from hitching this idea to the chain of analysis. In an effort to convey a strongly held opinion, let’s say that the lack of variety within Nickelback’s catalog, combined with reprehensible music being their “bread and butter,” appears to be the most acceptable and conclusive reasoning behind this unimpressive phenomena.

Nickelback is hated more now than mesh shorts were back in the first decade of the 2000s.

Just what could it possibly be? Canadian distrust? A dislike for Kroeger’s not-quite-scathing-enough voice? Or is it, once again, their repeatability of horrible music? What if we don’t mind those above bands for not deviating from their defined style because we like their defined style? What if it’s because we didn’t like Nickelback’s style to begin with, and instead of changing, they keep pumping crap at us through an ever-widening musical sewage pipe? But then… how do they keep selling enough records to stay solvent? It’s all a poorly investigated mystery… well, unless you chalk it up once again to America’s love for buying crap.

This is the first entry in my “fuck yeah” series. A couple of my friends have been doing some rad shit lately, and I want to pay them due tribute.

Also, I have a theory that every American under the age of 50 has set up a google alert for their own name and I want to see if that will bring them to this page without my prompting.

Nickelback was the best thing to happen to Detroit in a long time.

The negative reaction to having the mediocre rock act play their halftime show made Detroit seem like a normal city. For the first time in years, Detroit was the spotlight of news articles that weren’t about post rust belt poverty. Detroit residents became people of taste instead of people in danger of resorting to cannibalism.

And even though Nickelback is a toxically boring band on its own, they are evidently comedy gold when free-associated with Detroit. Check this Funny or Die video with the great Paul Scheer where the band gets Magnum P.I.’ed and Robocop-ed.

They hint at Motowning Nickelback, rechristening the Canadian blandleaders “The Four Nickles.” Meanwhile, elsewhere on the internet, a group of musicians called that bluff and raised them, performing Nickelback songs in the style of Motown.

Sadly, “How you Remind Me” never magically morphs to the ear worminess of “Tears of a Clown,” but hey! That’s Adam Kubota on bass!

Kubota, like myself a former Hartford resident, is this rad dude who occasionally dabbles in bringing quirky musical tangents to life. The joy of the following phrase will make zero sense to anyone who’s never lived in central Connecticut, but Kubota once led a band through multiple versions of the Whalers’ anthem “Brass Bonanza” at a dingy and beloved beer bar on the West End.

Anyway. I almost jumped out of my skin when I saw Kubota thumping away in the background of the video. The last time I saw him was about two years ago at Jeff Koyen’s wedding reception, which was held at a private area in an enormous bar in Brooklyn. It was a jaunty drunk coincidence that Kubota was there—he doesn’t know Jeff Koyen at all—and I remember dragging him over to my then girlfriend (now wife) like I had the world’s best magic trick.

Also: we used to call bumming cigarettes “Kubota-ing.”

Plus: I once threw a napkin at him after debating the reasons why Hendrix is a genius. You probably had to be there, but I was smiling the whole time I typed that so fuck you and your “had to be theres.”

So anyway, if my theory is correct, you, Adam Kubota, are reading this right now. Get in touch, man! Lets hang out. I quit smoking and married Maura, two topics that are sure to spark hours of good conversation. Or just tell me about Burning Man. Whatever!

Here’s the two lead singles from Nickelback’s forthcoming seventh studio album ‘Here And Now’, due to be released on November 21st.

Judging from these two tracks, it seems as though if you were a fan of their last release ‘Dark Horse’, you’ll be just as fond of the new album. As a result of producing a similar sounding record, Nickleback have been receiving some criticism from music douches – but it’s all unjustified. Chad and the boys have found a formula which works brilliantly, and have stuck to it. Respect to them for that.

First up is the rather wonderful ‘When We Stand Together’, the more mellow of the two songs here – building from a simple acoustic-guitar-led intro, to the standard Nickelback chorus – anthemic and catchy. Great work.

The second single is the more upbeat and party-driven ‘Bottoms Up’. A good old rock and roll track, with drinking as the obvious central theme. The lyrics aren’t exactly poetic, but this one will go down a treat at their live shows. Douches will refer to this ‘Burn It To The Ground Vol. 2′. I say to them: shut the fuck up and enjoy the music.

Yesterday’s post got me thinking about music and it’s mysterious message-in-a-bottle quality. Who hasn’t heard a song and immediately been teleported back in time to a place, person or specific event? As you might’ve deduced given how I keep harping on, music is as much a vital part of me as blood or psyche, forming the very fabric of both memory and experience. And invariably those are linked with people. Nowhere is that more apparent than in love.

Ooooooh! which reminds me of a scene in one of my favourite movies, Bandits, where Cate Blanchett is driving along in her car, singing (and crying) to Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart. If I could count the times I’ve done that (though in my youth, it was more likely to be How You Remind Me in a Beetle). This is for the ladies (you just need to watch the first minute):

Once upon a time I was falling in love * but now I’m only falling apart

Which makes brings me to the next little instalment in the eX-file saga. Since each of the trusty Players has tattooed a burning memory in my mind (for better or worse), they come with songs attached. Like strings. Strings of love. And loathing. Not always in equal measure, mind you – looking back with the bruises and brilliance of hindsight, I think loathing generally comes out on top. I’m not perfect – when I get mad and I get p*issed, I get out my decks and make a playlist…

the red violin

Dr McPolar (DP): strangely I can’t really find a song for DP other Collective Soul’s Forgiveness which he played umpteen times after collecting me at the airport (which was his way of confessing infidelity while I was away in The Mother City - a trip I cut short so I could home and support him as a colleague had recently died of a heart attack). Happy times! What I do associate with the good doctor, however, is the more classical sh*t – especially the violin, which he played. Ah. And that brings forth a beautiful memory of Birthdays Past…

{ brief background }

DP and I’d been broken up (I got so frustrated with his overall emotional immaturity and decided to end the doomed liaison before I lost my mind – he even managed to arrive late for the axing but that’s another story) for well over a month (we’d only dated for about 2) when I started seeing The Drama Queen. Who I met through DP and who still very much worked for his dad and taught his sister. Yup. Can you spell messy?

*

Dr McPolar

Anyway, my birthday rolls around (as is it’s wont in July) and in my usual deluded attempt at salvaging something of value from the relationship wreck, I wanted to stay ‘friends’. So I invited him to my picnic in the Botanical Gardens. A day which was, all in all, quite a fiasco. The theatrical highlight, however, was DP prancing through the trees, playing happy birthday to me on his violin. The Drama Queen’s dog, aptly named Loki, took one look at this and bit him! DP then played the wounded (and very much dog bitten – though it barely broke skin) ex while The Drama Queen sulked because he hadn’t pulled some grand romantic gesture and Ma Nguni was clearly siding with martyred doctor. In retrospect, hilarious. At the time I wanted nothing more than to get horribly drunk, forget it was my birthday and that I was demented enough to be/have been dating either of these nitwits *sigh*

But that doesn’t really help us with a theme song, now does it? DP was also pretty into music so it’s odd that I can’t dredge something from my usually sharp memory. Ah but wait! RAM whirring madly, I’ve got IT! Oh yes, it’s a gem!

(a) I hadn’t heard the group before (and oh! I loved them after this) and

(b) it was, as music always is, purrrrrfectly prophetic.

Given my recent return from bright lights, big city New York, DP excitedly told me he’d found me a song: none other than Death Cab For Cutie’s Marching Bands of Manhattan. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful song but with lyrics like:

“Sorrow drips into your heart through a pinhole

Just like a faucet that leaks and there is comfort in the sound

But while you debate half empty or half full

It slowly rises, your love is going to drown…”

I wasn’t overly impressed at my then beloved’s choice. Words are power, baby and WTF are you calling for here?

Alas, there’s no music video for that so I’ll have to go with the consolation ‘prize’ – something I discovered later (and which applies equally to the other ninja, Duke D. Nile). So, for ‘em gingers, here’s Mumford and Sons’ Little Lion Man

Weep for yourself, my man * You’ll never be what is in your heart * Weep Little Lion Man * You’re not as brave as you were at the start…

The chorus belongs poignantly to our delusional Duke: ‘but it was not your fault but mine, and it was your heart on the line, I really fucked it up this time…’ – didn’t I, my dear?

Hi there!

First of all I’d like to wish you all a Wonderful and Amazing New Year!
I hope you will enjoy every single day of 2011, share the love, keep up smiling and spread the music all around us more than ever!

Like usual, I made some resolutions for the year to begin and one of them was to post more regularly on my blog! So it came to me that I should open a new category! Since we are entering a new decade (and nearly no one is talking about it…) I thought it would be a brilliant idea to make a Top Songs of the Past 10 years.

But you know what? Choosing only 10 songs out of the zillion I have in mind is totally impossible. So I will dedicate one post to each year and I am starting now with 2001.

In order to establish a “Fair” Chart, I give marks to a selection of 10 songs I really loved that particular year based on those criteria:

The memories I’ve got with the song,

Its “beauty”,

How well I know the lyrics,

The music video

How famous the song was worldwide, objectively speaking.

So, my Top 10 songs of 2001 is:

10. Samantha Mumba – Baby come on over
9. Nickelback – How you remind me
8. The Corrs – Breathless
7. Michelle Branch – Everywhere
6. Britney Spears – I’m a slave 4 U
5. Enrique Iglesias – Hero
4. Mya – Case of the Ex

3. Destiny’s Child – Emotion

2. Daft Punk – One more time

1. ALICIA KEYS – FALLIN

Alicia Keys, Alicia Keys… I discovered her talent, her hairstyle and her beautiful voice in 2001 and I’ve never been disappointed since then. Her song Fallin was just so amazing, a new star was born, and she’s still glowing.

Embedding with Youtube isn’t allowed on any of her songs so let’s rediscover her historical video HERE

AND YOU ?? Do you think of any other artists that enlightened your days with music back in 2001??? Just let us know!!

All the Right Reasons Acum, ca tocmai am sarbatorit ziua babatilor, m-am gandit sa continui seria

All the Right Reasons

Acum, ca tocmai am sarbatorit ziua babatilor, m-am gandit sa continui seria “Life would be miserable without them” cu trupa Nickelback.

Nu sunt rockerita, insa imi plac multe genuri muzicale. In categoria “Rock” personala se incadreaza Nickelback, trupa a carei melodii sunt imposibil de uitat. Le-as asculta oriunde: in masina, la jogging, la scoala. Se potrivesc oricarui context.

Genul lor muzical este un asa-zis “Slow rock”, nici prea ritmat, nici prea lent, nici prea metalic, nici prea melancolic, just perfect.

Hitul `How You Remind Me` de pe cel de-al treilea lor album `Silver Side Up` a ajuns in topul Canadian Singles Chart si Billboard Hot 100 in acelasi timp, Nickelback fiind prima trupa canadiana care a reusit aceasta performanta.

Dupa ce a lansat single-ul `How You Remind Me` in 2001, trupa a cunoscut un mare succes comercial.

El obisnuia sa le spuna acestora: `Here’s your nickel back` => Nickelback.” (Sursa: bestmusic.ro)

The sound of Albany Down is stripped-down-to-the-waist no nonsense rhythm and blues 70’s inspired Brit rock ( the feel of early ‘Free‘ or ‘John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers‘) but with a bit of jazz-funk to mix it up a little…very fine and accomplished performance…insistent guitar hooks, stripped down licks and rattling good-time rock…

Jagz
Ascot

West London’s Soul Disciples came together late in 2005 with the express wish of bringing the classic soul sounds of the 60’s & 70’s to the dance floors of Britain.

Dismayed at the disservice these great tunes are being paid by many covers bands, we have resolved to make our interpretations as faithful to
the spirit of the originals as possible.

The soulful voice of Miss Clare “Bubbles” Moloney combined with the authentic soul sound of the SD band has to be witnessed to be believed.

The Soul Disciples constantly strive to instill their performances with the spirit and skill which made soul music of the 60’s & 70’s so exciting.

The SD’s have found themselves in the enviable position of having an 8-piece line-up which combines experience, virtuosity, personality & good looks …
All wrapped up with a shared love of Classic Motown, Atlantic, Stax & Northern Soul.

Saturday, 21st March
Show will start at 8.45
Ticket cost: £8.00
Doors open from 7.30pm. £26 for 2 courses and entrance (£30 for 3 courses). Entrance for the bands is £8 but is strictly

limited and on a first come first served basis. Entrance for dining or just the band INCLUDES free entrance to the nightclub

Nickelback – another of my faviorite bands. I’ve been listening to them a lot for the past couple of months really and the first song i had ever heard by them was “here without you baby”. I realise that one is a lot different to their other songs after hearing the rest. Anyways, my faviorite by them are probably:

Here without you baby

Someone that you’re with

Next contestant

Saving me

Animals

How you remind me

Now, most people who listen to Nickelback would most probably say “Rockstar” was one of their best songs but i disagree. I do like it, but i feel the other ones are better – maybe because it’s so overplayed?
