Say the word ‘research’ and people are either running scared, mildly amused or ready to

Say the word ‘research’ and people are either running scared, mildly amused or ready to listen. This little entry is geared for the first two sets of folks. So perhaps a story is in order.

The best way to think of research is to imagine how a pirate would look for treasure. Now, a pirate doesn’t hop in his boat with his parrot, foul-smelling crew, some stale bread and cast off his line. A pirate (a successful one anyway) will have a compass along with his precious map.

That map is his guide. He sets his compass to follow the map. A good pirate can guide his ship through clear or stormy skies. He uses the sun and the moon to steer. When the clouds come in he is able to guide his crew by using his compass.

I’m guessing the good pirate didn’t have exact coordinates but he could use the map to get there. So when you think of research, think of it like this. The pirate had a goal in mind and that was to get to the treasure. Maybe that treasure is a question you’re asking. Maybe that treasure is a word or a phrase of something you need to find. Yes, most online research consists of finding information that someone else has found. (Intelligence research is another issue altogether. Let’s tackle that one later).

So what are the trademarks of a good pirate/researcher?

Both start with the end in mind;

Both pay attention to the tools their using;

Both see the journey of the find as an adventure;

Both can quickly adapt to stormy skies.

The pirate uses his compass. The researcher chooses other words, phrases or even forums to find what he needs.

If you’re looking for something type in a phrase that describes what you need. Ask Google a question. Visit about.com or howstuffworks.com and get in the habit of finding the answers.

Take your time and think about the best way to find the information.

Sorry for the lack of posts, but the pig flu has completely sidelined me for almost two weeks now. I’ve basically been stuck on the couch watching bad Lifetime movies and MonsterQuest marathons. It was while watching Lifetime’s, “Too Late to Say Goodbye”, featuring Rob Lowe and an overly botoxed Lauren Holly, that I came upon this video gem of a scuba diving cat.

I thought it was fake until I came across the actual story of Hawkeye, The Scuba Diving Cat. My bad. Check out HowStuffWorks for the whole tale of Hawkeye and his companion, Muttley, the scuba diving doggie.

30 Days + 48 Days *** I meant to post this yesterday, but I was having internet issues (among other

30 Days + 48 Days

***

I meant to post this yesterday, but I was having internet issues (among other things). So here goes…

A close friend of mine recently stopped drinking. Completely. For very good reasons that I would never get into on this blog. To me, the new, sober version of my friend was not that big of a deal since our relationship doesn’t revolve around a bar menu. We also go shopping, watch movies, grab coffee or dinner, hit the beach, etc. However, she did mention that it was very hard to hang out with certain friends anymore for she realized their entire relationship revolved around blueberry vodka sodas and cigarettes with a splash of gossip thrown in for good measure. Oh, she also stopped smoking. I mean, give up one vice, why not go for gold?

This got me thinking since, as I’ve mentioned lately, my social drinking habits have recently given me pause. I thought about my various groups of friends. Surely we could have a conversation and/or meaningful interaction without a social elixir on tap. Right? Right??

Well after my hangover last weekend and pledge of “no more shots” (except bachelorette parties) I decided to detox until Halloween. I think I can, I think I can…

Friday night I planned to stay in. I have so much to do in regards to my great Australian adventure, from like…MOVING/selling most of my crap(!), to tiny annoying things like arranging with all my bill companies to pre-pay while I’m away. Not to mention all the writing and applying to jobs I need to do. Plus I’m running a 10K this Sunday to raise money for pancreatic cancer research (my dad is a lymphoma survivor), so I figure if there is a time to put the social life on hold and focus on more important things—this was it!

And it was great. All week I was productive member of society. After a full Friday afternoon at the library I enjoyed an early, impromptu Mediterranean feast at a divey restaurant across the street. This place flies in their baklava from Syria and if you order it for dessert you get to try five kinds of pistachio heaven. I ate enough to feed the entire country of Turkey…and I drank water with lemon. After that I almost passed out in a food coma on my couch by 10 p.m.…until…my phone rang…

It was Jim. Some friends were getting together and then going dancing.

Me: “I don’t know, I’ve been partying too much lately so I’m kinda laying low.”

Jim: “I probably have something to do with that, huh?”

Me: “Well, you don’t control my behavior, but, you know, we have fun, then you call shots, and then I call shots, and it becomes a big, old slippery slope of debauchery.”

Jim: (laughing) “Indeed.”

But I went anyway. I know, I know. But as the DD. It was a little social experiment to test if my conclusions from the weekend prior were indeed true or just wishful thinking. Was I really over him? Did I really believe were too different? Could we still hang when I was sober…and he was not?

Well, if you’ve never been the sober person amongst drunk friends it’s tolerable and even funny for a minute…but loses its charm about as fast as a third grade Shakespeare production.

I found myself more of an observer than a participant. A girl I met out dancing a few weeks prior who seemed nice and fun was now driving me crazy. Turns out she’s more immature than your worst high school Queen Bee. Conversation at Jim’s was scattered. Someone would ask a question and as the person tried to answer another (drinking) person would interrupt and change the subject. No one seemed to care…except me. And while there were two medical residents in the room there wasn’t just talk of the “g-spot”…there were hand-drawn diagrams. Yeah…

And when we got to the bar Jim’s friend from out of town, who was super nice, cool guy, kept trying to grind with me. He is a fantastic dancer…but I don’t like grinding even when I’ve had a few. I think I’m too old for it (though quite possibly I’ve just turned into a dancing prude). The Old Twenty days I had no problem getting jiggy on the dance floor with my guy friends or love interests. But my New Twenty days consist of dancing with myself, coyly waving my arms in front of my as if they’re subtextual defense shields. And regardless of my general New Twenty grinding aversion…one thing I know for sure is I was way too sober to just go with it. Awwwwwkward…

When the dancing got really out of control I sat down for a bit. I started to feel as if I was making everyone else uncomfortable. Possible…though unlikely since they rest of the gang seemed to be gyrating in another solar system. At one point I think they forgot I was there. Which was kind of a good thing.

And with Jim…on the way out he joked, “Tricia’s sober. I can’t even talk to Tricia right now.” Every joke is a half-joke. And he was right. It was weird. Everything that night felt different between us…and I don’t think it was just the fact that I could walk a straight line…eyes closed and reciting the alphabet backwards. I don’t think we’ll be hanging out as much in the future. They all went back to Jim’s apartment for after-party detox. I went home.

The next morning I woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I got up and went to a café to write before bhangra dancing class (more on that in a near future blog) and even squeezed in some much-needed errands. After my shower I opened my favorite podcast channel, “How Stuff Works: Stuff You Should Know.” There near the top was a podcast I hadn’t listened to yet called, “What is a hangover, really?” Too perfect. Learning was never so fun…and binge drinking will never quite be the same…

Desligava o fogo.

So, it’s no great revelation to observe that the Internet has forever changed how we discover

So, it’s no great revelation to observe that the Internet has forever changed how we discover and experience music.

And if you, like me, appreciate discovering and experiencing music on a regular basis, then you probably already know where to go to find your music of choice. Ah, but the music never stops.

We’ve spent some time in the past highlighting a few spots for new music available for free through sites such as public radio stations and online music magazines. And you really should keep on top of those daily downloads. Some great new stuff for your ipod every single day.

But today is a little different as we focus on the bloggers’ contribution to the musical smorgasbord that is at your fingertips.

The first is the Retro Music Snob out of Dallas, who says, “I like all music…so should you”. With a steady diet of MP3’s aggregated from various sites, to go along with a plethora of links around the musical blogosphere, you can get lost sampling a wide variety of music, “retro” or otherwise.

And then there is the gold standard for MP3 aggregation, The Hype Machine out of New York, which succintly provides its raison d’être as follows: “Every day, thousands of people around the world write about music they love — and it all ends up here.”

Updated every 30 minutes and pulling some of the most interesting (and fresh) music possible into its database, The Hype Machine accomplishes what every musician really wants and needs – to get the music heard by as many people as possible. By any means necessary.

And if all of this is foreign to you, be sure to click here for a great review of how MP3 files work, brought to you (not so coincidentally) by HowStuffWorks.

In 1929, a stock market crash caused the Dow Jones index — one of the main indices used to evaluate the health of the American economy — to lose nearly 12 percent of its value in one day . From Black Tuesday, Oct. 29, 1929, to Nov. 13, 1929, $30 billion simply vanished from the United States economy due to falling stock prices .

Stock prices are based on the perceived value of the company or investment they represent. Much of the American economy is based on the wealth bought and sold on Wall Street. So when stock prices fall across the board, the economy falters, too.

Some historians think that a crash in the Florida real estate market was one of the factors that led to the crash of 1929 and the Great Depression that followed . In 1987, another stock market crash caused the Dow to drop 508 points in one day — a loss of 22.6 percent of value . This crash is thought to have been generated by a weak dollar and a sudden fleeing of foreign investors . In 2000, the stock market crashed again when the dot-com bubble burst and highly inflated Internet and tech companies lost their value all at once. The total amount of value that tech companies lost that year came to an estimated $800 billion .

In 2007 and 2008, the American economy found itself once again teetering on the edge of another economic slide. This time, the economy was brought to the brink by something called the subprime mortgage. The federal government has made several efforts to keep the markets from falling. But despite the government’s efforts to prevent another stock market crash, in theory, a free market society isn’t supposed to have any intervention in its economy. How bad would things have to get for the government to step in? Find out on the next page.

The Subprime Fallout

The stock market is all about perception. When the market is perceived as healthy — meaning the dollar is strong, the trade deficit is narrow, and the value of companies is high — investment begets investment. When things look bleak, however, a chain reaction of misfortune tends to occur. The failure of one section of the economy can lead to another and so on. In 2007, things began to look bleak on the American stock market. This was thanks in large part to the subprime mortgage fallout.

Subprime mortgages offered home loans to borrowers who posed a high credit risk. Often, these loans were given with attractive terms, like low initial interest rates and no down payment. In many cases, they were given for amounts people couldn’t otherwise afford. Many of these subprime mortgages were issued as adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs). The interest rates on these loans reset, generally after two years, and at a higher rate. This increased monthly mortgage payments, often to amounts a homeowner couldn’t afford. As a result, home foreclosures in the United States increased 75 percent from 2006 to 2007 .

Joe Raedle/Getty Images
Foreclosures on homes, like this one in Miami, were expected to hit 1 million in 2008.

These foreclosures may not have had the sweeping effect on the American economy that they did had they not carried so many implications for other areas of the financial world. Under previous banking regulations, banks simply issued mortgages and kept them, accepting payments over 15 or 30 years until the loan was paid off. But in the mid-1990s, restrictions covering loans were eased as part of an effort to extend home ownership to more Americans. The result was that mortgages could be bought and sold easily. Many subprime mortgages were purchased by stock brokers, lumped together into portfolios, and sold as securities .

Because financial institutions like investment banks and securities companies had purchased these mortgages, the risk from any fallout was spread across the financial spectrum.

Let’s look at this dispersal like a metastasizing cancer. As interest rates on ARMs reset and increased, so, too, did monthly payments on home loans. Combined with additional factors, like auto industry workers who were part of a massive layoff and real estate speculators who had purchased homes with ARMs, some people simply walked away from their homes — and the loans that went with them .

But the huge mortgage lenders who actually paid out the money to borrowers to purchase these homes suddenly found that the revenue from their monthly payments was drying up — quickly. The largest U.S. home loan lender, Countrywide, reported $1.5 billion in lost revenue during the second half of 2007 . In 2006, before the subprime fallout, Countrywide made more than $2.5 billion in profits . And since nonconsumer banks and institutions had become so heavily invested in the subprime market, almost all areas of finance became infected with worthless mortgages. Even worse, because investors around the world had purchased subprime mortgages as securities, the whole global economy suffered from the American subprime fallout.

Huge investment banks and major lenders began to go under. People braced for the worst: a stock market crash. Then, the U.S. government stepped in to try to save the sinking ship that was the American economy. But is there anything a government can do to control a stock market crash? Read on to find out.

Government Action against a Stock Market Crash

Because the United States has a free market economy, theoretically, the highs and lows in the market should be affected only by supply and demand. According to the free market theory, any institution with enough clout to sway the movement of the market — like the government — should stay out of the way and let nature take its course. While the U.S. government doesn’t directly intervene in the stock market (say, by inflating the prices of stocks when they fall too low), it does have power to peripherally affect financial markets. Since the economy is a set of interrelated parts, governmental action can effect a change.

Mario Tama/Getty Images
In a free market society, the value of stocks traded (like those on the New York Stock Exchange) is subject only to supply
and demand.

The subprime mortgage fallout is an excellent example of what a government can do to try to avert a crash or recession. In 2008, the U.S. government pulled out many stops in an effort to keep the economy from plunging into a nosedive. The government announced it would infuse money into the economy in the form of tax rebate checks, totaling a minimum of $600 per taxpayer . The hope was that the money would spur Americans to spend on goods and services in America to help revive the economy.

Governments can also help the economy — and thus guard against stock market crashes — by infusing cash into banking institutions. The U.S. government’s main instrument for cash infusions is the Federal Reserve Bank (the Fed), the network of independent, government-related banks that standardizes, regulates and aids commercial banks in the United States. In 2008, the Fed announced that it had created a new lending arm: the Term Securities Lending Facility (TSLF). The TSLF would offer $200 billion in loans to non-deposit banks (not your neighborhood branch bank). What was so significant about the TSLF was that it accepted debts as securities . In other words, banks saddled with subprime mortgage-backed securities could use the very same investments that got them into trouble as collateral on 28-day loans from the Fed.

The point of this move is to increase liquidity in the market. A liquid market has lots of buyers and sellers trading assets — without those assets being discounted, like in a fire sale. The Fed can also indirectly infuse cash by lowering the overnight rate — the interest rates that banks charge each other for overnight loans. The Fed cut the overnight by three percent from September 2007 to March 2008 . With lower rates and more cash available, the Fed hoped that banks would be more likely to infuse the cash back into investments once again.

The Fed got more hands-on in 2008 when it guaranteed $30 billion of debt when JP Morgan Chase bought out Bear Stearns . Investment banks are the institutions that really inject cash into markets. When these large firms stop investing (or go under), the entire financial system can grind to a halt . Investment banks make their money on dividends from their investments, and when they have more cash to invest, the market is stronger.

While the government’s intentions to keep the market from crashing may be to protect its citizens’ interests, not everyone agrees that action should be taken. Correcting the market can simply prolong the problem, some critics say. The best course of action could be taking no action at all .

Culpa do aquecimento global. Caiu uma tempestade? É o aquecimento global. O calor está de rachar? Aquecimento global.
