Finally, at 10pm (almost 2 hours later – thank god they’d brought us a chair!), the guy told us to come back in the morning. A slightly worried Brendan and I left the phone with them while we attempted to find food.

  The following afternoon at 12.30, we returned to their stall and they tried to ask us to come back at 2pm. We explained that our train to Udaipur was leaving at 2pm and if they couldn’t fix it, it’s fine but please can we have it back. The guy (a different guy to last night) made a phone call, opened the table drawer in which there were maybe 20 phones, and took out the HTC. Without saying anything, he got out a new set of screwdrivers and we watched as he repeated the process of taking it all apart down to the chip, 4 times despite us insisting that we had to leave for our train. it hadn’t been touched since we left it the previous night. Finally, an hour and a half later, I snapped. I lost it. I told him he clearly couldn’t fix it, and to put it back together NOW as we had to leave for the train right there and then.

  He clumsily put the phone back together, and now the top and bottom pieces of the back of the phone do not fit on properly. We got a taxi to take us to our hotel, wait while we got our bags and made him put his foot down to the station (which wasn’t far to be honest) 

  We only just made it.

  All in all, the big lesson we learnt here is, do NOT take your phone, or any electronic device for that matter, to a repair street stall. Even in Mumbai!

  We all know that HTC has been hurting over the years. That’s why the announcement of their new flagship phone, the HTC One, was so important. What was also important was for HTC to deliver the One to the shelves before the Samsung Galaxy S4 hit. However, HTC was plagued with supply issues that pushed the release out. Well, it seems that HTC has finally figured out the process, after three months of delays!!!

  HTC has announced that they have figured out the supply issues and are ready to double the production of the HTC One. This doubling should start to happen this month, as compared to Aprils volume. The production will continue to grow into June as HTC need to meet their “strong demand”, as stated by HTC North Asia president Jack Tong. Tong went on to say: “Our capacity is expected to rise significantly starting from mid-May. We are optimistic about our high-end sales during April and June.”

  HTC has stated that it was having supply issues with the camera components to build the phones. Since this camera was designed specifically for the Taiwanese company, production could not be ramped. Now that this is fixed, we can all look forward to some of that HTC One love. Enjoy!!!

  Tijdens Google I/O 2013 werd er een aangepaste versie van de Samsung Galaxy S4 aangekondigd, deze draait op standaard Android. Het zou dus een soort van Nexus-apparaat zijn, maar dan met een andere naam. Android Community heeft HTC benaderd met de vraag of dat bedrijf ook een dergelijk toestel gaat uitbrengen.

  HTC One

  Nadat de aankondiging van de Samsung Galaxy S4 Google edition (GE) gedaan werd, kwam de logische vervolgvraag of er meer toestellen zouden komen die op dezelfde manier gelanceerd worden. De HTC One is naast de Samsung Galaxy S4 ook een toptoestel op dit moment, dus het zou een mogelijkheid zijn dat deze ook uitgebracht wordt als Google edition. Dit toestel zou dus zonder HTC Sense geleverd worden en verkocht via de Play Store. De heren van Android Community hebben contact opgenomen met HTC, maar deze blijkt voorlopig geen plannen te hebben om de HTC One Google edition uit te brengen.

  Meer keuze

  Doordat er toestellen uitgebracht worden die draaien op standaard Android in plaats van de software die de fabrikanten erop zetten, zou de consument meer keuzevrijheid hebben. Nog idealer zou zijn dat je de keuze hebt op één device om te switchen tussen, in dit geval, TouchWiz en de standaard-versie van Android. Op deze manier geef je gebruikers optimale keuzevrijheid als het gaat om softwarekeuze. Waar zou jij voor kiezen? De fabrikantensoftware? Of de software van Google, die als leuke bijkomstigheid ook direct updates van Google ontvangt.

  De Google-editie van de Galaxy S4 zal vooralsnog alleen in de Verenigde Staten te koop zijn. Deze uitvoering van de S4 zou qua frequenties prima in Europa kunnen werken en het lijkt waarschijnlijk dat de systeemsoftware, via een niet-officiële weg, ook op de gewone Galaxy S4 geïnstalleerd kan worden.

Google membuat source code Android yang dengan bebas bisa digunakan oleh siapa saja baik untuk mengubah kode tersebut misalnya untuk penambahan fitur. Dengan adanya fitur baru tersebut, bisa dengan bebas untuk mendistribusikan ulang source code yang telah diubah.

  Hal tersebut membuat Android begitu cepat berkembang, siapapun boleh mengembangkan sistem operasi ini. Google tidak pernah menganakemaskan sebuah vendor atau perusahaan yang tergabung di Open Handset Alliance (OHA) untuk memajukan Android. Sekedar informasi, Open Handset Alliance didirikan Google bersama lebih dari 80 perusahaan lebih yang di dalamnya terdapat HTC, SONY, Dell, Intel, Motorola, Samsung, LG untuk membuat mobile platform berbasis kernel Linux (open source).

  Selain OHA, banyak juga Developer pihak ketiga baik secara perorangan maupun secara komunitas yang turut mengembangkan dan memodifikasi kode distribusi Google. Untuk mengenal lebih jauh berikut adalah ROM modifikasi tersebut:

  Stock ROM
  Stock ROM Adalah ROM bawaan pabrik, tapi ROM bawaan pabrik ini sendiri banyak dimodifikasi. Kelebihannya bagi Anda pecinta tampilan seperti Sense UI dari HTC, Motoblur dari Motorola, TouchWiz dari Samsung, LG UI dari LG dan Timescape dari SONY bisa tetap digunakan. Masing-masing memiliki kelebihan dari sisi tampilan dan fungsionalitas. Jika anda menggunakan custom ROM, maka ciri khas dari tampilan tersebut akan hilang.

  Seperti yang saya katakan tadi, ROM bawaan pabrik pun banyak dimodifikasi. Mulai dari ketersediaan ROM bersifat deodexed. ROM bawaan pabrik bersifat odexed, perbedaannya jika anda menggunakan deodexed akan lebih mengguntungkan karena bisa dimodifikasi. ROM pabrik deodexed sangat cocok buat yang ingin mengganti tampilan. Misalnya mengganti ikon baterai, ikon sinyal hingga mengganti atau mengubah bar notifikasi untuk menambahkan power widgets.

  CyanogenMod

  
  ROM sesepuh dari custom ROM. CyanogenMod didirikan oleh Steve Kondik (Cyanogen). Custom ROM ini sangat terkenal, karena sudah mendukung  70 perangkat Android yang berbeda. Custom ROM ini menjadi salah satu distribusi firmware Android yang terkenal dan berkembang sangat cepat. Bahkan, tim CyanogenMod melaporkan pada tanggal 31 Desember 2012 terdapat sekitar 3,6 juta perangkat yang sudah menggunakan custom ROM ini. Sungguh angka yang bisa dibilang fantastis dan tentunya akan semakin terus bertambah seiring pertumbahan perangkat Android yang baru dan memberikan dukungan ke perangkat tersebut.

  CyanogenMod bersifat gratis dan termasuk open source software. Sehingga tidak hanya perangkat yang didukung tim CyanogenMod yang bisa merasakan kemampuan custom ROM ini. Hampir di tiap perangkat Android terdapat porting-an agar bisa menjalankannya. Perbedaannya terletak pada dukungan. Rilis official didukung tim Cyannogen, sedangkan unofficial dibuat dari pihak ketiga (Developers) perorangan agar bisa digunakan. Hingga saat ini tim CyanogenMod sudah merilis sampai ke versi 10.1 yang berbasis Android Jelly Bean 4.2.

  Keuntungannya menggunakan custom ROM ini, perangkat akan terasa cepat (jika dibandingkan dengan Stock ROM). Cyanogen juga termasuk custom ROM yang aman (tidak terinfeksi malware) serta tidak terdapat aplikasi yang menganggu dan tidak dibutuhkan biasa disebut Bloatware.

  MIUI ROM

  
  MIUI memiliki keunggulan di banyaknya tema yang bisa diunduh. Pertama kali meng-install custom ROM ini pasti anda melihat tampilannya mirip iOS. Custom ROM ini buatan China yang sekarang diambil alih perusahaan Xiaomi. Dengan modifikasi dan banyaknya tema di MIUI Anda dengan mudah mengganti tampilan yang menarik. Tema MIUI bisa diunduh langsung dari server mereka.

  Meski sudah dimiliki Xiaomi, dukungan terhadap perangkat Android juga termasuk banyak. Ditambahkan adanya dukungan dari komunitas MIUI dari 17 negara selain China. Dukungan tersebut agar ketersediaan bahasa pada custom ROM ini. Sehingga banyak team Developer untuk membantu menerjemahkan custom ROM ini.

  Bahkan Xiaomi sudah merilis sebuah smartphone Android dengan dukungan update dari developers pihak ketiga secara langsung. Beberapa smartphone Xiaomi dengan MIUI ROM terdapat pada Xiaomi Mi-One dan baru-baru kemarin pada akhir tahun 2012 merilis Xiaomi Mi-Two dengan spesifikasi procesor Quad-core Snapdragon S4 1.5 Ghz.

  AOKP (Android Open Kang Project)

  
  Custom ROM ini mirip seperti CyanogenMod jika dilihat sisi tampilan. Perbeadannya terletak pada adanya penambahan beberapa fitur dan tweak di pengaturan perangkat. Dukungan perangkat Android pada AOKP memang lebih sedikit dibandingkan CyanogenMod. Tetapi dengan beberapa tambahan yang tidak ada di CyanogenMod, rasanya tidak ada salahnya untuk dicoba.

  Total sudah ada 22 perangkat dan terus bertambah yang didukung Kuda uniform ini, terakhir ditambahkan dukungan tujuh perangkat baru. Sama seperti Cyanogen, AOKP memiliki sifat Open Source Software. Jika di CyanogenMod terdapat versi nightly (update ROM setiap hari), stable, release candidate (RC) dan M snapshot, maka di AOKP hanya terdapat dua versi yaitu builds dan milestone.  Versi milestone merupakan versi stabil yang sudah bisa digunakan dan lebih sedikit bug dibandingkan versi Builds di AOKP.

  Paranoid Android

  
  Custom ROM ini memiliki kelebihan di mode tampilannya. Anda bisa mengganti menjadi tablet mode meski anda menggunakan smartphone. Hybrid mode dan Hybrid properties kedua fitur unggulan ini yang manjadikan custom ROM ini begitu cepat dikenal. Pada Hybrid properties anda bisa mengkustomisasi tampilan tablet/smartphone aplikasi satu persatu. Hal ini berlaku semua aplikasi baik yang di-install maupun sistem aplikasi. Contohnya jika menggunakan Chrome di smartphone maka New Tab akan muncul di jendela baru, jika menyetel menjadi tampilan tablet maka New Tab akan terdapat disamping tab yang lama. Selain itu rilis stabil custom ROM ini lebih cepat dari custom ROM lainnya.

  Perangkat yang didukung Paranoid Android masih tergolong sedikit dibandingkan custom ROM lainnya seperti MIUI, AOKP dan CyanogenMod. Kabar baiknya, tim Paranoid Andoid baru saja merilis source code mereka. Dengan begitu para Developer bisa menggunakan kode distribusi tersebut untuk dukungan ke perangkat yang di mau.

  Remember when you heard the term “iPhone killer” 3 or 4 years ago? You may have silently giggled to yourself thinking, “Yeah, right!” I also remember reading many articles before Apple introduced the iPhone by industry insiders who believed the market was already saturated with too many cell phones and Apple would not succeed, if they got into the cell phone market in 2007. The Smart Phone market was in its infancy and few understood how that small segment of the market would come to dominate sales of all cell phones. You can thank Apple for the phenomenal growth of smart phones and introduction of a product so outstanding and revolutionary that no one would even come close to matching it for six years, until now.

  Of course the new phones you see above won’t create a new market and are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. They have finally evolved into devices that make the iPhone look almost antiquated. After years of earlier crummy Android products playing catch up, they’ve finally caught up and in many ways exceeded the iPhone’s feature set, as well as its design. This is also surprisingly true for the Windows 8 phone products like the Nokia 920/925/928 and the HTC 8X which are phenomenal. Why does Windows 8 perform so flawlessly on smart phones and is such a beast on PC’s? That will be another article.

  The HTC One X, HTC’s last year Android flagship, will get the Zoe camera and BlinkFeed homescreen as a part of a massive upcoming update that will bump up Sense to version 5.0.

  Developer LlabTooFeR tweeted that the HTC One X should get updated to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean in the near future and features like the Zoe camera with 3-second previews. It’s not clear though whether this means the One X will get highlights reels in the gallery and all the fancy softwarefeatures of the One will come to the device as well.

  The Sense 5.0 is a simpler, cleaner version of HTC’s Android skin and it will be a welcome update on the HTC One X released in early 2012.

  It will also bring the BlinkFeed homescreen aggregating a tile-organized view of all your social updates or news, whatever you configure.
