USA E CINA CONTRO COPENHAGEN. INONDIAMOLI DI MAIL!

Cari cyberattivisti,

In this most recent SNL skit President Obama was skewered… royally. It’s as if the SNL writers downloaded my thoughts on President Obama’s recent Asia trip, or what is sometimes referred to as his World Apology Tour: Asia Edition, and wrote this skit

The sarcasm is biting and the humor is hilarious.

The question is, why does it seem that his base is turning on him? Are they realizing that their previous efforts to poke fun at President Obama failed miserably so they turned it up a notch? Or is this genuine creative license that sometimes hits or miss and in this instance it hit? Or are they really upset with the excessive spending that President Obama is pushing for?

My guess is that it’s their creative license that finally hit its mark. I like SNL, but watch it infrequently now that I don’t even have rabbit ears on my tv set to watch the broadcast networks.

This skit certainly got me to smile and lifted up my day ever so briefly.

The most memorable line from this skit is:

“I am noticing that each of your plans to save money involves spending even more money.”

Enjoy!

I completely agree with this post on Angry Asian Man from yesterday, in response to the SNL cold open. I couldn’t even watch the whole thing it was that horrid.

Did you catch the cold open on Saturday Night Live this weekend? I can’t believe someone thought this was a good idea. You’ve got a very Caucasian Will Forte as Chinese President Hu Jintao, doing some seriously godawful ching chong, alongside Nasim Pedrad, rocking an equally ass-awful accent as his “translator.”

This alone is pretty painful. Whatever joke they’re going for is completely sabotaged by the fact that everyone is thinking, “Hey, those two aren’t Asian.” (At least they didn’t tape their eyes back.) But it goes on, with this tired, drawn-out joke about “do sex to me” and Hu literally bending over in front of “Obama.”

I don’t understand how this kind of racial mockery flies on national broadcast television. Is this not yellowface? No, they didn’t use “Oriental” makeup, but there’s no denying that the effect is there — insulting ching chong and all. At the very least, awkward bare minimum, would it have been that hard to get an actual Asian man to just stand there for six minutes?

And yes, I fully acknowledge that there’s also been something rather uncomfortable about watching Fred Armisen play Barack Obama for the last couple of seasons. Hell, the whole thing was uncomfortable.

And here’s the transcript:

ANNOUNCER: We will now take you live to Beijing for the joint press conference already underway between U.S. President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

OBAMA: As I already said privately, I would like to thank President Jintao for his kind welcome and generous hospitality, and I hope that during this visit we can have a productive dialogue about the serious issues of concern that remain between our two countries — issues ranging from the unfair valuation of your currency to the trade imbalance, and most importantly, human rights. I believe there can be a great partnership between us but it will require compromise and understanding.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Thank you, Mr. President. I would like to add that I completely understand why you feel entitled to come here and lecture China on our shortcomings. After all, my country does owe the United States a great deal of money. Oh, wait. Hold on a moment. I believe I had that backwards. In fact, now that I think about it, it is your country that owes us a large sum of money. Is this correct?

OBAMA: Uh… yes.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Now, it’s coming back to me. I believe it’s $800 billion.

OBAMA: That is correct.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Such a large sum.

OBAMA: Yes, it is.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: And yet you haven’t even mentioned it. That’s so odd.

OBAMA: Uh, look, you’re going to get your money.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Are we? Are we going to get our money? Because from what I read your country is in the middle of a serious recession.

OBAMA: Uh, while this is true, there are signs that our bailout has steadied the financial markets and our stimulus package has been effective in fixing the job crisis.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I’m curious. How many jobs has it created?

OBAMA: Uh, so far, none.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I see.

OBAMA: But our health care reform plan, we’re confident, is going to lead to enormous savings.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: How exactly is extending health care coverage to 30 million people going to save you money?

OBAMA: I… don’t know.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: And this “Cash for Clunkers” program– I have read that you purchased many clunkers with our money.

OBAMA: Yes, we have.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: What does this word “clunkers” mean?

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

OBAMA: Well, a clunker is a car…

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I know what a clunker is. And just so there is no misunderstanding, you are not allowed to pay us back in clunkers.

OBAMA:Of course not.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: You know, as I listen to you, I am noticing that each of your plans to save money involves spending even more money. This does not inspire confidence.

OBAMA: I assure you, you’re going to get your money.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Will you kiss me?

OBAMA: Sorry?

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Will you kiss me?

OBAMA: I don’t understand.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I like to be kissed, (shouts) when someone is doing sex to me!

OBAMA: There’s no need for that.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: No? You know how many uninsured we have in China? One and a quarter billion, billion. But I’ll tell you this: We don’t owe anyone $800 billion.

OBAMA: Well, obviously, we take our debt to you very seriously.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I suppose if I really wanted to get my money I could call and say I was a Wall Street banker who needs his bonus. But really, why should I have to stoop to that level?

OBAMA: You don’t have to stoop to any level.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Please understand if it were my $800 billion I wouldn’t care, but it belongs to my country. I feel like I should bring it up.

OBAMA: You’re going to get your money.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Say, while you’re here, are you at least going to treat me to dinner and a movie?

OBAMA: I’m sorry?

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I think it’s the polite thing to do, (shouts) before doing sex to me!

OBAMA: Mr. President, please.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Very well.

OBAMA: I assure you that as soon we solve this economic crisis…

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Which one? The one that your country’s reckless real estate speculation caused? That one? I just want to make sure I know which one we’re talking about.

OBAMA: We are taking steps to make sure that what happened will never happen again.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: What steps?

OBAMA: Uh, reform of banking regulations.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Do I look like Mrs. Obama?

OBAMA: What?

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Do I look like Mrs. Obama?

OBAMA: Of course not.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Then why are you trying to (shouts) do sex to me like I was Mrs. Obama?

OBAMA: Now, now.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Just do it. Get it over with.

OBAMA: Mr. President!

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Don’t be a tease.

OBAMA: I just…

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I can take it.

OBAMA: This is not the time or place.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Very well. In that case, I call this press conference to a close, and Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!

Talibans claim the responsibility of every attack, hard to believe them every time. Attacking on places like GHQ and POF needs strong strategical skills maneuvering. It’s not like so easy without tactical maneuvering that you go, fire the rounds, break in GHQ, kill and run off.

Last year in August 2008 when POF came under attack — the detained would-be suicide bomber, who identified himself as Hameedullah, revealed some stunning facts about the activities and involvement of proxy Taliban in the tribal areas of Pakistan.

Officials declined to give further details, but it was every where on media about the involvement of NAD and RaW — as briefed by ISPR.

Just this month, on 3rd November, ISPR’s Major-General Athar Abbas at a press briefing said that Pakistan has found concrete evidence of India’s involvement in militancy in South Waziristan.

Last month, 2 Indians on two consecutive days are apprehended by Rangers. As per the Rangers and officials, those two are backed by RaW. Many are caught day-to-day and many such newses are remained inconspicuous on media.

I don’t understand what those two Indians were doing? Selling peanuts or walnuts on a wheeled vehicle? Or they just came for sight seeing in Pakistan? This all should end from both sides!

Just today, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has accused India of supporting insurgents in Pakistan. On the other side, while U.S. President Obama was on his trip to Asia, during his stay in China, he, followed by Chinese President Hu Jintao, voiced that Pakistan and India should recommence the talks again. India retorted that it wouldn’t allow someone from outside to meddle in it’s internal affairs.

The general perception of Pakistani public is that Indian Government is up in arms — and extremely reluctant to recommence the talks with Pakistan. And this was finally announced by Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi of late. Against the grain, Pakistan is always ready to step in for talks and negotiation to settle the long-standing disputes, while the affectation of India is yet to be truly said as surplus at this juncture.

I prefer Indian Government should behave judiciously and recommence the talk and negotiation. This wouldn’t be a unilateral benefit once the relations between both countries are fine-tuned, rather it’d be a bilateral benefit — a much needed too — for both India and Pakistan.

The Age, Australia, Nov. 21, 2009 - HOURS after Barack Obama landed in Beijing and headed downtown,

The Age, Australia, Nov. 21, 2009 -

HOURS after Barack Obama landed in Beijing and headed downtown, a cavalcade of black sedans drove out the other way.

China’s security chief, Zhou Yongkang, was heading against the traffic to meet an old Sudanese friend who has been accused of genocide in Darfur. Zhou’s three-day visit to President Omar al-Bashir coincided with Obama’s time in Beijing with President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao. It was a vivid statement of how differently the US and China might view the world when they are running it together.

Obama had brought some of his heaviest hitters to enlist China in confronting ”the major challenges of the 21st century, from climate change to nuclear proliferation to economic recovery … challenges that neither of our nations can solve by acting alone”.

Over the three days Obama and Hu spoke positively of each other’s efforts but struggled to list concrete achievements on any of Obama’s priorities. The US leader and his team spoke bravely if not convincingly about China being receptive to its message on Iran, North Korea and Pakistan and Afghanistan. Sudan never made it to the list. On China’s human rights, both sides plainly disagreed.

”I underlined to President Obama that given our differences in national conditions, it is only normal that our two sides may disagree on some issues,” said Hu.

For the Chinese state, even if the leaders failed to forge a personal rapport or policy breakthrough, it was a priceless three-day opportunity to manoeuvre a US president on their stage and project an image of China on top. By some accounts, China’s single highest diplomatic priority was not reducing the threat of rogue nuclear weapons on its doorstep or preventing the next economic meltdown, but getting Obama to say ”Tibet is part of China” on Chinese soil.

In Chinese diplomacy, form and content can be hard to disentangle. China is a ”ritual state”, says Australian National University China historian Geremie Barme. It is ”tirelessly reassuring itself and whoever is watching of its own stature and stateliness”.

Not all Chinese were impressed by their ”ritual state” going to extraordinary lengths to prevent Obama from engaging freely with the Chinese public. To many, particularly among internet-savvy youth, the contrast between Beijing’s insecurity and Obama’s natural confidence was instructive. ”They put a condom on the President of the United States,” wrote Wang Yukun at Sina, a popular website.

Obama handled Beijing’s strictures with grace but it wasn’t easy going. Bashir, in Khartoum, found security chief Zhou Yongkang to be a more obliging dance partner.

Zhou’s team unveiled the first Khartoum-Beijing direct flights, opened a Confucius Institute, signed an agriculture deal and agreed to jointly pump more oil.

The world is familiar with how Obama’s agenda in China was constrained by his own domestic politics. He had slapped tariffs on Chinese tyre imports and was not ready for a legally binding climate change agreement at Copenhagen – something that China sees as in its national interest.

But Hu was also weighed down by domestic political challenges. In 1995 Zhou was working his way to the top of China’s biggest oil company, Petrochina. Zhou and oil industry veteran Zeng Qinghong persuaded then president Jiang Zemin to exploit Sudan’s oil reserves at a time when Western companies could not afford the political or reputation risk, according to several Chinese oil industry and foreign policy sources.

”You are the important promoter of the Sudan-China oil project, the Sudanese people have special affection towards you,” said Bashir, on Thursday’s CCTV report. ”Sudan-China oil co-operation not only brought Sudan oil but also peace.”

Zhou left Petrochina in 1998 and Jiang stepped down from the presidency in 2002. But Chinese institutions can be shaped as much by invisible ties of patronage as official lines of power. Oil industry sources and foreign policy strategists say Zhou continued to hold the reins of China’s oil industry for many years after his official title changed. Some strategists claim that an ”oil gang” also drove the Chinese Government’s more recent forays into Iran’s oil and gas fields and even obstructed efforts by Hu and others to support international sanctions against Sudan and Iran.

Zhou now heads China’s secret and public security agencies and justice system. He is Jiang’s most important ally and therefore a factional rival of Jiang’s successor, Hu. Jiang’s allies also head China’s propaganda apparatus and possibly form a majority of the all-important Central Military Commission. Unfortunately for Obama, most of the concessions he would have liked from Hu happen to be on turf the Chinese President does not confidently control. Hu has to juggle the interests of factional rivals, giant state-owned corporations and an increasingly demanding bureaucracy. Hu could not unilaterally commit to what Obama appeared to put most effort into – a threat of sanctions against Iran.

Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told an unimpressed White House press corps that Obama had never expected that ”the waters would part and everything would change over the course of our almost 2½-day trip to China”.

Gibbs was in damage control but he also had a point. The US cannot lead as it used to and has no choice but to give China a more proportionate say.

A deadly gas explosion has killed at least 42 miners and trapped more than 60 others, in a Chinese mine on Saturday. The incident occurred at about 2.30 a.m. when 528 people were working hundreds of feet underground. Rescue workers reported that about 400 workers successfully escaped the mine. The Xinxing mine is in Heilongjiang province, which borders Russia and is owned by the Heilongjiang Longmei Mining Holding Group.

A rescue team of about 156 personnel is working on the site to retrieve the trapped workers. The fact that the blast has destroyed the mine’s ventilation and communication system, is making the relief and rescue mission more challenging. The impact of the blast shook the nearby buildings and partially damaged some of them. The falling debris of the buildings left some of the escaping survivors unconscious.

The Chinese Vice Premier, Zhang Dejiang who reached the accident site, met the injured, while Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have personally issued instructions about the rescue work. China has recently and historically, been witness to some of the world’s deadliest mining industry disasters.

China is one of the NPT-recognized nuclear power states but still relies for about 80% of its power needs on thermal power, fueled by coal. Despite a recent government drive to clamp down on the small, unsafe operations where most accidents occur, lax safety standards and strong demand for coal makes these mines the deadliest in the world. The official sources have reported a 12% drop in fatalities in mines in the first seven months of this year over the last year after the smaller operations were closed down. In 2008 alone, more than 3,000 people died in mine floods, explosions, collapses and other accidents in China.

¿O no?

È incredibile trovare e leggere certi ridicoli articoli in internet. La rete o network che si voglia

È incredibile trovare e leggere certi ridicoli articoli in internet.
“We do not seek to impose any system of government on any other nation, but we also don’t believe that the principles we stand for are unique to our nation.”
“These freedoms of expression and worship, of access to information and political participation, we believe are universal rights.”
“They should be available to all people, including ethnic and religious minorities, whether they are in the United States, China or any nation.”
“That makes our democracy stronger because it forces me to hear opinions that I don’t want to hear, it forces me to examine what I’m doing.”
“We have known setbacks and challenges over the last 30 years. Our relationship has not been without disagreement and difficulty. But the notion that we must be adversaries is not predestined.”

How do you spell Obama in Chinese? Depends who you are. The Chinese news media spell it 奥巴马 (àobāmǎ)

How do you spell Obama in Chinese? Depends who you are. The Chinese news media spell it 奥巴马 (àobāmǎ). But the US Embassy in Beijing recently launched a campaign to change it to 欧巴马 (ōubāmǎ). Why no agreement? The embassy says its spelling is closer to the American pronunciation of Obama. But the Chinese don’t appear to like how it sounds, or reads. For one thing, the Taiwanese already transliterate Obama the American way. Beijing likes to keep its scriptural distance from Taipei. More here and here.

Next on the podcast, the contrasting oratorical styles of presidents Hu and Obama. The two leaders draw on starkly different rhetorical traditions, and they may also have somewhat different audiences when they step up to a podium. There are personal differences too, mainly concerning charisma: Obama oozes it; Hu doesn’t go in for oozing much of anything. Some young Chinese have noticed. Like their Japanese counterparts, they’re learning English by reciting famous Obama speeches.

Then, something on a type of Chinese idiom known as chengyu, as explained by the late James Lilley, former U.S. ambassador to China. Lilley says Chinese diplomats loved to hide behind these sayings. He recalls how he once turned the tables on them by coming up with an enigmatic saying of his own.

After that we travel to the UK, where Confucian philosophy has infused Chinese language classes in five public schools. It’s almost inevitable that when you learn a language, you learn about the culture of the people who speak that language. (Believe it or not, it helps.) But this new approach in Britain goes a step further: the schools draw on Confucian teaching methods. The idea is that students will learn more through thinking and enjoying a subject than they might through memorization.

And then, a grand finale: poet and writer Marilyn Chin on why she loves the expression chop suey. It’s all in the onomatopoeia. More about the origin of the dish here and the song here (it’s a high point in the musical Flower Drum Song.) Much more, by the way, from Marilyn Chin next week, including a discussion of the role language plays in her new novel.

Rising CO2 Will Cause Catastrophic Sea Level Rise Finds Antarctic Study by Louise Gray, Environment CorrespondentThe Telegraph/UK

Sea levels could rise by up to six metres if the world fails to get pollution under control, according to the latest study in the Antarctic.

The British Antarctic Survey is the latest research to warn of the consequences of increased greenhouse gases on the Earth’s climate. Carbon dioxide is rising at record rates putting the world on a pathway for a 6C rise in temperature, which will cause a sea level rise of up six metres, threatening coastal cities like London, New York and San Francisco.

The recent studies add pressure on world leaders to agree to an international deal on climate change at a UN summit in Copenhagen this December.

How Limousine Liberals, Water Oligarchs and Even Sean Hannity Are Hijacking Our Water Supply By Yasha Levine, AlterNet.

A group of water oligarchs engineered a disastrous privatization scheme to make a fortune out of California’s most precious natural resource.

A group of water oligarchs in California have engineered a disastrous deregulation and privatization scheme. And they’ve pulled in hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars without causing much public outrage. The amount of power and control they wield over California’s most precious resource, water, should shock and frighten us — and it would, if more people were aware of it. But here is the scary thing: They are plotting to gain an even larger share of California’s increasingly-scarce, over-tapped water supply, which will surely lead to shortages, higher prices and untold destruction to California’s environment.

California is in year three of a fairly nasty dry spell. And some very powerful forces are not letting this mini-crisis go to waste, fiercely lobbying Governor Schwarzenegger and Senator Dianne Feinstein, paying off corporate shills like Fox News’ Sean Hannity and capitalizing on people’s fear of drought to push a massive waterworks project that will pump more water, build more dams and keep sucking the state’s rivers dry. …This drought hysteria is nothing more than political theatrics, a scare tactic backed by big agribusiness to strong-arm California voters into building a multi-billion dollar system of dams and canals that would not really help small farmers — of which there are very few anyway — but would deliver more water to corporations, subsidize their landholdings, fuel real estate development and enable large-scale water privatization. At its core, it is a war waged for water by California’s megarich on everyone else. READ MORE:

Shocking Benefits of Legalizing Pot By Ami Cholia, AlterNet.

There are some pluses to legalization that you probably haven’t heard about.

The war on drugs may be a noble intention, but the illegal growing of marijuana is destroying our environment.

Primarily run by Mexican drug cartels California’s illegal growers aren’t your typical peace-loving hippies of the 70s. These men live illegally on farms all summer, putting tons of waste into the soil and water. Pesticides drain into creeks and enter the food chain, sickening wildlife. Each plant also uses about 15 gallons of water per day soaking up a large part of the water resources around.

Organized crime groups who cash in on the drug war’s distortion of supply and demand dynamics have little regard for the environment. Even illegal growers of organic marijuana impact the environment by felling trees in national forests to make room for illicit grow sites. The plants are seasonal, but the environmental damage lasts forever.

There is a serious exception to be made. Many medical – legal – marijuana growers are among the most responsible citizens around. They buy soil in bulk, use rat traps instead of poison, water with timers and drip systems. They have very little physical impact on the land.

Outside of the obvious benefits of hemp — bio-diesel, burns cleanly, soil builder, better cheaper paper, etc. — organic and sustainable practices for growing marijuana would bring in tons of revenue for the states, clean up the environment, and save the government $150 billion on policing and courts, since 47.5% of all drug arrests are marijuana-related.

We’re not promoting drug addiction. The positive benefits to the environment by making marijuana legal definitely seem enough to take action.

Even Glenn Beck seems to think this is worth it. READ MORE:

World’s Biggest Polluters Strike a Deal: U.S. and China Agree to Comprehensive Clean Energy and Climate Plan By Joseph Romm, Climate Progress.

The overall plan is much more ambitious in scope and depth than anticipated.

A comprehensive plan for U.S.-China cooperation on clean energy and climate change was announced in Beijing by President Barack Obama and President Hu Jintao. The plan contains directives to create various institutions and programs addressing a wide array of cooperation on clean-energy technologies and capacity building, including very important efforts on helping China build a robust, transparent and accurate inventory of their greenhouse gas emissions.

These efforts include cooperation in the following areas:

1. Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

2. Joint Clean Energy Research Center. (Factsheet)

3. Electric Vehicles. (Factsheet)

4. Energy Efficiency. Building on the Ten Year Framework on Energy and Environment Cooperation, government officials of both countries will “work together (Factsheet)

5. Renewable Energy. (Factsheet)

6. 21st Century Coal. The two countries will “launch a program of technical cooperation to …develop clean coal and carbon capture and storage technologies.” (Factsheet)

7. Shale Gas. The U.S. and China will “assess China’s shale gas potential, promote environmentally-sustainable development of shale gas resources, conduct joint technical studies to accelerate development of shale gas resources in China, and promote shale gas investment in China through the U.S.-China Oil and Gas Industry Forum, study tours, and workshops.” (Factsheet)

8. Nuclear. The two countries reaffirmed the goals of the Third Executive Committee Meeting of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership to promote the peaceful use of civilian nuclear energy, and “agreed to consult with one another in order to explore such approaches—including assurance of fuel supply and cradle-to-grave nuclear fuel management so that countries can access peaceful nuclear power while minimizing the risks of proliferation.”

9. Public-private partnerships on clean energy. A new U.S.-China Energy Cooperation Program (ECP) will “leverage private sector resources for project development work in China across a broad array of clean energy projects, to the benefit of both nations.”

The two countries hope that the upcoming United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen will follow this example and focus as much on bottom-up technological strategies for achieving real reductions in emissions as it will on top-down targets for carbon caps. READ MORE:

Push to Curb Credit-Card Rates Fades as Democrats resist consumer outcry by Michael KranishThe Boston Globe

WASHINGTON – Efforts in Congress to cap credit-card interest rates are faltering because of opposition from Democrats and a lack of specific support from the White House, despite growing consumer outrage over a rush by banks to impose rates as high as 30 percent.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama vowed to back a strict limit on credit-card interest rates. But the White House is not yet behind any plan.

The Senate soundly defeated legislation in May introduced by Senator Bernard Sanders, the Vermont Independent, to cap most credit-card interest rates at 15 percent. Nearly half of the Democratic senators joined Republicans in defeating the measure, 60 to 33.

Consumer groups say the problem of skyrocketing interest rates has worsened since that vote, as banks scramble to boost rates in advance of a new rule scheduled to take effect in February, requiring banks to give consumers a 45-day advance notice of rate increases.

Sanders said many of the credit cards in the hands of American consumers are issued by four banks that received taxpayer bailout money after last year’s economic meltdown: Citigroup, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, and Wells Fargo.

“People are disgusted. We bailed these [companies] out and they then had the gumption to raise interest rates on the American people,” Sanders said in an interview. Sanders said he plans to reintroduce his proposal to cap rates at 15 percent; he predicted it will have more support this time.

U.S. reluctance to set a short-term emissions goal has been a sticking point in the U.N.-sponsored talks for nearly a year. Neither the United States nor China — which is not obligated to do so under the U.N. framework, even though it ranks as the world’s biggest emitter — has done so, thereby hampering the prospects of an agreement… Read more at the Washington Post

Zero sums gains. When I lose, who wins?

Since 2002, my retirement accounts are worth 38% less, being in U.S. dollars, compared to a basket of currency in exchange traded funds. Where did that 38% go? By the end of October 2008, more than half of the U.S. banks were pretend banks.

With fiscal policy, American all had pretend dollars in oh so many pretend banks which were for all practical purposes, insolvent. Pretend banks, a lot like a house of cards propped up by elected officials who have postured, positioned and proffered assurances. Bankers ,who should have been out of business, making those very nice salaries. Incompetent bankers.

In November 2008, Elizabeth Moyer wrote in Forbes that fighting the financial crisis put the U.S. on the hook for some $5 trillion, perone report. The inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), Neil Barofsky, reported that since 2007 nearly $24 trillion was exposed in government money to financial institutions, after he examined the programs (50 of them) set up by the Federal Reserve as well as by the Bush and Obama administrations.

In a more recent report Scott Reamer of the Vicis Capital Hedge Fund reports American sources have funded upwards of $20 trillion dollars of the total $30 trillion funded world-wide through markets from “direct lending and indirect backstops” with the litany of bailouts, stimulus, conduits, mortgage freezes, foreclosure programs, working groups and government sponsored investment efforts, all while global central banks and government agencies are creating credit. All at the cost to currency values and the U S Dollar. It was like the invisible cost that the Goldman Sachs, the Fidelitys made each year charging me 1.5% managing my mutual fund IRA. The fees never appeared on any statement. It was all a free ride. Was this all just one big illusion?

There was still a clear and present danger to the total system. The invisible ink would soon become visible.

Systemic symptoms. When the financial system got inflammatory bowel disease. There was wonder here, like a patient with Crone’s Syndrome, accompanied by diarrhea, if things will ever be the same. Last week the Treasury Department said Thursday that the deficit for October totaled $176.4 billion. For one month!

“As growth recovers and strengthens, we’re going to bring our fiscal positions back to a sustainable balance,” was the quote from Timothy Geithner.

Fear. You carry it around on your shoulders. Everywhere. Or in your pants. “Banks bear some responsibility for the extent of the damage caused by the crisis,” Geithner said today at a small- business conference in Washington. “You carry a substantial obligation to help our communities get back on their feet.”

SOME RESPONSIBILITYfor the extent of the damage?

How big a factor is Wall Street’s greed and lack of morals? Is it morally acceptable to pay yourself $14.2 million? In 2007 the chief executive of a Standard & Poor’s 500 company on average made $14.2 million in total compensation. In 2004, the ratio of average CEO pay to the average worker was 431-to-1, compared to 107 times more in 1990. At the height of the tech bubble, the ratio of CEO compensation to the average pay of a production (i.e., non-management) worker in 2001 was 525-to-1, according to “Executive Excess,” report which was released by a liberal research groups United for a Fair Economy and the Institute for Policy Studies.

People who felt they were immortal. Pulling out all the stops in an attempt to flush the system with liquidity. Policymakers. Congressmen and Congresswomen.

There is growing distrust of America. Has the fact war debt was never on the books of the Congressional budget been heard in China? It was not well known in the United States. How could policymakers, your House of Representative who approves the budget, never have seen the cumulative imbalances building? These 435 members of Congress believed in their own illusion of greatness?

The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press is an independent, non-partisan public opinion research organization. On November 11, 2009, The Pew Research Center issued a survey indicating a glum mood of Americans, where two-thirds of the public is dissatisfied with the way things are going in the country, with fully nine-in-ten saying national economic conditions are only fair or poor, and nearly two-thirds describe their own finances that way – the most since the summer of 1992.

It seemed time for the working man and woman to take back the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party from the lobbyists and elected officials like my representative in the House of Representative who voted to support this. Betty McCollum seemed to think all of this was all just some kind of a pursuit like fantasy football.

Todd Harrison writes at his most recent pieces on MarketWatch the current course of fiscal and monetary policy is absolutely insane. Through the lens of Albert Einstein who once said that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The same thing in this case being monetary policy with interest rates below one percent.

Hyman Minsky was an economist who wrote about bubbles that occur in an economy. He theorized that a bubble begins with displacement caused by a significant invention, like the internet. A displacement creates profitable opportunities in any given affected sector but, rather than invention alone, financial innovation is necessary for access to cheap credit before a kick-off to an over-trading phase. THE ACCESS to cheap credit is still there. For some.

  Some facts from 2008:

  World GDP $47 trillion
World stock valuation $121 trillion
Bond market $85 trillion
Credit derivatives$473 trillion

Whatever happened to those credit derivatives? The last number I read put the credit derivatives market was $560 trillion. Are companies yet required to place reserves on credit derivatives, like the state regulated insurance industry?

On May 2009, Paul McCulley of PIMCO wrote, “The longer people make money by taking risk, the more imprudent they become in risk-taking. While they’re doing that, it’s self-fulfilling on the way up. If everybody is simultaneously becoming more risk-seeking, that brings in risk premiums, drives up the value of collateral, increases the ability to lever and the game keeps going. Human nature is inherently pro-cyclical, and that’s essentially what the Minsky thesis is all about.”

Because the rest of the world is unable to extricate themselves from the interwoven financial machination. In a nation where the average credit card debt is $8,300. Masking by the spending habits of a slimming margin of society, as well as by the federal government, with the populace unaware that they have been skewed, here comes the affects of a lower dollar. Down 12 percent in one year. Down 38 per cent in five years, in part to finance the war in Iraq. And now in Afghanistan. As I understand it, war debt never was on the books of the Congressional budget. While Goldman Sachs keeps manipulating markets with access to cheap money, and rewarding money managers way beyond measure. When no one questions the morality of a paycheck, Of over indulgence.

Fear. In the free world. “Credit is the air that financial markets breathe, and when the air is poisoned, there’s no place to hide.” – Charles R. Morris

Charles R. Morris, a former banker, is the author of he Two Trillion Dollar Meltdown: Easy Money, High Rollers, and the Great Credit Crash before the 2008 market collapse.

Hyman Minsky said euphoria ensues as people pile into a sector, with a driving demand to affect higher prices, often with borrowed money. In this case, continued cheap money. With an arrogance. With no sense of morality. Ponzi’ investors join in speculation that someone will buy their assets at higher prices. But markets eventually, whether due to lenders tightening lending criteria or insiders selling out, hit a peak. Panic then sets in. With a stampede out of the market, bankruptcies ensue.

The social engineering in September 2008 was all about government trying to keep capitalism going. Is it one big Ponzi scheme? With lobbyists playing a central role? Those derivatives, not backed up by reserves. When the laws of survival of the fittest in the market place had been always about letting systems collapse. Until there was Henry Paulson. And Congress. Democrats and Republicans. Without a clue. Or they believed in their individual greatness? In the big illusion.

Slowly China is tweaking the financial system. The one based upon the dollar. The system in which the OPEC nations along with China have seen their loss of valuation of 38 percent too. The higher the market pressure to devalue a particular currency, the more dollar reserves its central bank must hold which used to create a built-in support for a strong dollar that in turn forced the world’s central banks to acquire and hold more dollar reserves. Making the dollar stronger. In the world before September 2008.

In July 2009, Zeng Peiyan, the head of China Center for International Economic Exchanges and the former Chinese Vice-Premier, in a speech in Beijing called for a new system to ensure the stability of the major reserve currencies, according to the China Daily. In China, Obama met with Chinese government officials who say one thing, while central bank chief Zhou Xiaochuan believed in the development of a new super-sovereign currency largely taking the place of the dollar. He actually had accountabilities for banking in China.

On the heels of discussion at the G20 meeting of a new world currency, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in April 2009 called for more surveillance of countries like the United States that issue major reserve currencies.

If you missed it, Timothy Geithner has insisted that the US Treasury has a strong dollar policy. Top story in November 2009. He said the Obama administration was committed to a strong dollar and to actions aimed at bolstering its value, giving reassurances to Asian nations last week. He comes from the world of central banks where expressions in bankspeak are neither normal or clear in normal everyday discourse. It is not clear if the strategy between the Fed and the European Central Bank is coordinated or not, or to what extent. It has been written that lectures were given President Obama and Timothy Geithner by top Chinese officials earlier in the week about the risks posed to the global economy by America’s ultra-low interest rates and soaring government deficit. The New York Times reported that Mr. Obama had NOT extracted a fresh commitment from Beijing to revise its policy of keeping the renminbi pegged at an artificially low value against the dollar soon. On Tuesday Obama “could only cite China’s ‘past statements’ in support of shifting toward market-oriented exchange rates.” Was this all an illusion? Some kind of fantasy football? Who would we start this week?

The Wall Street Journal reported on the clumsy fashion at a media “availability” where President Obama and Chinese leader Hu Jintao issued ambitious statement on cooperation but took no questions, while exhibiting body language that seemed to say they had been frustrated by the entire exercise, and they did not address each other. “Mr. Obama expressed pleasure at China’s longstanding pledge to move toward a more market-based exchange rate over time, something Mr. Hu didn’t mention.”

With the Chinese government growing restless, some day soon the federal government won’t be able to keep interest rates artificially low. The dollar’s falling sharply relative to other currencies is an ominous sign. In the marketplace people can move to a new vehicle, since Mr. Bernake has punished all savers. There is growing distrust of America both internally and externally. Mostly about this fantasy money.
