Ormai siamo agli sgoccioli! Stanno partendo in questi giorni i lavori di allestimento dello spazio in Via Paolo Sarpi 8, e come nei migliori film d’azione siamo qui per dirvi: WE NEED YOU!!

Come forse molti di voi sapranno, stiamo lavorando con i ragazzi di Controprogetto agli allestimenti dello spazio. La loro (e nostra) filosofia e’ che sia dannoso all’ambiente e al portafogli sprecare tanto materiale che giace nelle nostre citta’ e che viene spesso buttato, quando invece si potrebbe “rigenerare” sotto forma di nuovi mobili e allestimenti. Con un po’ di creativita’ e di ingegno, si ottengono oggetti bellissimi, etici ed eco-sostenibili!

E’ giunto dunque il momento di raccogliere i materiali che diventeranno il futuro mobilio di The Hub Milano, e stiamo cercando in particolare:

- Pannelli di legno, di qualunque forma e dimensione;
- Assi, laterali e ante di mobili;
- Persiane di legno, cassapanche, scaffalature;
- Qualunque cosa che sia di legno e possa essere usata per costruire un mobile.

In aggiunta, se bazzicate nell’ambito fieristico e affini, stiamo cercando allestimenti sul punto di essere scartati o smantellati. NON stiamo cercando tamburati e strutture di legno che siano rimaste esposte ad acqua e quindi siano danneggiate da muffe/decomposizioni varie.

Se qualcuno di voi fosse in possesso di qualcosa del genere e fosse interessato a liberarsene, la nostra Hub-Mobile sara’ piu’ che lieta di passare a ritirarlo nei prossimi giorni! Sepeda Fixed Wheel atau sering akrab disebut Fixie merupakan style bagi para kaum urban. Biasanya sepeda ini dipakai oleh Messenger atau Kurir jasa ekspedisi. Sepeda ini tidak menggunakan freewheel dan rem (brake). Perputaran crank akan seiring dengan perputaran roda. Weits bentar! nggak pake rem, trus cara berhentinya? ya sebenarnya pakai cuma tidak menggunakan brake lever atau wire. Cara berhenti atau mengurangi gerak lajunya dengan cara memutar crank berlawanan arah dengan perputaran. Hmm, mungkin kalo disekitar kita disebut rem Torpedo.

Dalam perkembangannya, fixie tidak hanya dipakai oleh para kurir di perkotaan namun sudah menjadi tren  tersendiri oleh para pesepeda perkotaan bahkan menyaingi folding bike (sepeda lipat). desainnya yang simpel dan perawatannya mudah menjadi alasan mereka memilih fixie. Bahkan di Jogja mulai marak dan terbentuk komunitasnya.

Mengendarai fixie tidak asal naik, perlu penyesuaian karena dengan sistem pengereman yang berbeda ini membuat agak bingung bahkan tak jarang terjadi slide/ngepot. Selain slide, pengendara juga bisa cedera karena tekanan yang keras saat melakukan pengereman. Melawan arah perputaran crank apalagi saat melaju kencang mengakibatkatkan tekanan/stress yang tinggi pada lutut dan pergelangan kaki. Maka dari itu sebenarnya ada kiat-kiat/teknik mengendarai fixie secara aman dan nyaman bahkan di beberapa negara memiliki regulasinya demi kesehatan dan keamanan. Untukkeamanan, beberapa negara mewajibkan pemakaian rem depan namun negara lain ada yang tidak.

디자인은 쉽게 아티스트나 디자이너들만의 고유 영역으로 오해받기 쉬운 영역이다. 바르셀로나 시는 바르셀로나에서 활동하는 디자이너, 디자인 산업계, 기관과 일반 시민 등 디자인 활동 참여자들 간의 의사소통을 증진시키고 참여를 돕도록 ‘디자인 허브 바르셀로나Disseny Hub Barcelona’라는 프로젝트를 2008년 12월 출범시켰다.

디자인 허브 바르셀로나 프로젝트는 바르셀로나를 유럽의 디자인 수도로 자리매김하기 위한 도시문화사업의 일환이기도 하지만, 바르셀로나 시와 카탈루냐 주정부의 지원, 지역 아티스트들의 활발한 참여로, 학생들과 일반 시민들이 디자인에 대한 이해를 높일 수 있는 다양한 프로그램들이 마련되어 있다.

무엇보다 이 프로그램들을 통해 학생과 시민들이 주변 환경과 삶의 터전인 바르셀로나를 ‘디자인’의 관점으로 새롭게 해석하는 데 의의를 두며, 학생과 일반 시민들이 생활 속에서 쉽게 디자인의 개념을 이해할 수 있도록 돕고 있다.

비주얼커뮤니케이션, 패션, 건축, 산업디자인 주력
세 군데의 허브 미술관, 관련 연구기관들을 근간으로 비주얼커뮤니케이션, 패션, 건축, 산업디자인 등 4가지 분야에 대한 전시와 교육 프로그램에 주력한다.

1) 허브 미술관
섬유복식 미술관(Museu Tèxtil i d’Indumentària) : 1883년에 연 미술관으로 그리스 시대부터 산업시대까지의 의상, 복식, 장식품, 섬유 관련 작품들을 전시하며 바르셀로나 출신 디자이너들의 패션 관련 전시회도 열린다. 장식미술 박물관(Museu de les Arts Decoratives) : 1932년에 문을 연 박물관으로 중세시대부터 제작·사용된 가구, 벽지, 시계, 유리 제품 등 일상생활 용품들과 가장 최근에 제작된 혁신적인 제품들이 6000점 넘게 전시되어 있다.

그래픽 아트 전시관(Gabinet de les Arts Gràfiques) : 1942년에 개장한 전시관으로, 일러스트레이션, 제품 포장, 책 제작, 포스터 등 그래픽아트와 관련된 전시를 담당한다.

예술디자인진흥원 (FAD) : 삶의 질을 향상시킬 수 있는 디자인에 주력하는 독립적인 연구 기관으로 산업 디자인, 그래픽디자인, 비주얼커뮤니케이션, 건축과 인테리어 디자인, 이미지와 패션, 공예 미술과 보석 장식 등 6가지 분야에 관련된 전시를 기획하고 연구를 후원한다.

2) 전시 활동
장식미술, 섬유와 복식, 그래픽 아트와 생활 속에서 사회문화적 현상과 맞물려 폭넓게 디자인을 해석할 수 있는 전시가 이루어진다. ‘관광기념품의 변천사’, ‘저가 항공, 중저가 브랜드가 유행하는 시대적 현상이 디자인에 주는 영향’, ‘전단지, 만화책 표지등 출판 인쇄물의 변천사’, ‘바르셀로나 산업 디자인의 변천사’ 등의 주제로 전시되었거나 전시 중이다. 세 군데의 미술관에서의 상설 전시와 1년에 2~3차례 열리는 기획 전시로 구성된다.

3) 교육 활동
2올해는 3군데의 디자인 허브 뮤지엄에서 3세부터 18세까지의 학생(전학령기 아동, 초등학생, 청소년), 디자인 전공 학생과 일반인을 위한 프로그램이 진행된다. 참여자들은 허브 뮤지엄에서 디자인과 관련된 워크숍과 프로그램에 참여해 아티스트와 디자이너들에게 강의를 듣거나 토론을 하게 된다. 또 직접 디자인 제품 제작 과정에도 참여하며 일상생활 속에서의 디자인의 중요성에 대해 배울 기회를 갖는다.

예를 들어 12세부터 18세까지 이루어지는 교육 프로그램 ‘몸과 디자인(El cos vestit)’은 복식 미술관에 전시된 시대별 의상의 특징에 대해 알아본다. 복식 디자인의 흐름이 단순히 미를 기준으로 한 유행을 따르는 것이 아니라, 정치, 종교, 사회 등의 시대적 배경과 그에 따라 변한 미의 기준과 함께 변화한 시대적 산물이라는 것을 배운다. 16세기 프랑스를 기준으로 유행했던 코르셋의 형태와 쓰임새를 살펴본 후, 토론 시간을 갖는다.

패션과 유행에 민감한 나이의 청소년들이 사회가 만들어낸 몸에 대한 이미지와 의상 디자인의 연관성을 이해하고 스스로 몸에 대해 생각해볼 시간을 갖도록 한다.

또 6세부터 12세까지 이루어지는 교육 프로그램 ‘내 옷 직접 디자인하기(Personalitza la teva samarreta)’는 복식 미술관에 전시된 시대별 의상의 특징과 의상을 구성하는 요소인 섬유, 색채와 디자인에 대해 살펴본 후, 세상에 한 벌뿐인 가장 창의적인 브랜드를 만들어 티셔츠를 스스로 디자인한다.

주변 환경과 디자인의 연관성 이해에 초점

교육 프로그램 담당자인 카르미나 보르보넷(Carmina Borbonet)은 “주변에서 접할 수 있는 요소에서 ‘디자인’이 어떻게 적용되었는지를 읽어내고, 창의성을 발의해 자신의 시각으로 환경과 도시와 사회를 해석하는 것”이 교육 프로그램이 중점을 두고 있는 점이라고 설명했다.

“학생들은 미술관에 가면 친절한 설명이 있지 않은 한, 작품을 이해하는 데 한계가 있다. 디자인 허브 프로젝트의 교육 프로그램들은 ‘미술관 전시’의 틀을 벗어나, 시대와 주변 환경의 변화에 따라 어떻게 개입되어 아이디어부터 제작까지 ‘디자인’의 결과물이 나오게 되었는지 알아보는 데 중점을 둔다. 그래서 직접 만져보고, 만들어보면서 주변 환경과 나와 디자인의 연관성을 이해하는 시간을 반드시 포함한다”고 설명했다.

‘디자인’이라는 단어가 ‘나’와 관련 있는 요소로 느껴지기까지는 참여하는 사람의 의지뿐만 아니라, 가깝게 접할 수 있는 기회와 교육도 중요하다. ‘디자인 허브 바르셀로나’ 프로젝트의 전시와 교육 프로그램들은, 디자인은 디자이너들의 작품에만 담긴 것이 아니라 시대, 기능, 목적에 따라 변화하고 진화하는 생활 속의 요소이며 나도 참여할 수 있는 활동임을 알게 한다. 시민들이 자신과 자신을 둘러싼 주변 환경, 살고 있는 도시를 해석할 수 있는 창의적인 시각을 가지게 되는 건, 도시와 시민 모두에게 분명 즐거운 일인 듯하다.

Naniwa-no-miya Remains, with the NHK building and Osaka Museum of History in the background

Long before the city of Osaka existed, there was an imperial capital called Naniwa. It first served as the seat of the emperor and his grand palace in 645, and for the second time in 744 (capital cities tended to move regularly as new emperors took power). Thanks to its strategic location, Naniwa developed into an important seaport for trade and cultural exchange not only between different regions of Japan, but with Korea and China as well. Even after the first permanent capital was established in 710 in Heijo-kyo (modern-day Nara), and in 794 in Heian-kyo (modern-day Kyoto), Naniwa acted as the seaport for imported customs and traditions that Japan integrated with its own to form the civilization we know as Japanese.
Besides sea routes, Naniwa was the trading hub for overland routes, much as it remains today. Militant Buddhist influence was be strong here, centering on the Honganji sect, but would finally be violently crushed by Oda Nobunaga in the late 16th century, and in the 17th century Toyotomi Hideyoshi would establish the great merchant’s capital of Osaka.
The name “Naniwa” remains in place names, such as Naniwa-ku (Naniwa Ward), Naniwa-bashi (a bridge on Nakanoshima island), Namba (the famous entertainment district, whose name is a modern reading of the same kanji characters (難波) for Naniwa).
Naniwa-no-miya, which was built two times on two different sites, was one of the grandest palaces in ancient Japan, and when its role as the imperial government center had ended, it served as a diplomatic meeting and lodging place for high-ranking overseas dignitaries visiting Japan. Only a small portion of Naniwa-no-miya remains, which can be seen in a small park adjacent to Osaka Castle Park. Next to the ruins is the Osaka Museum of History, which is the best museum in Osaka and one of the most enjoyable museums I have visited period. It is not only informative but engrossing, as it appeals not just to history buffs but average people who may not know anything about Osaka’s deep history. Additionally, you can enjoy a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the grounds of Osaka Castle and the Naniwa-no-miya remains from the tenth floor of this building. Both of these can be accessed from Tanimachi 4-chome Station (Chuo and Tanimachi Subway Lines).

Amedeo Novelli degli amici di Witness Journal ci ha fotografato ieri mentre svelavamo ad alcuni amici e membri il progetto di allestimento di The Hub Milano. Ed ecco il fantastico risultato: il volo del calabrone (animale che vola nonostante la fisica dica che non dovrebbe…!) tra Hubbers entusiasti e dibattenti!

Non è facile farci diventare invidiosi. In fondo, qui a Milano abbiamo uno degli spazi più belli dell’intera rete internazionale di The Hub, 570 mq di splendore nel cuore di uno dei quartieri più dinamici e affascinanti della capitale lombarda. Ma The Hub Oaxaca ci è riuscito: guardate questo video per credere…!

E’ passata più di una settimana (e ci scusiamo per il ritardo di questo post!), ma ancora se ne parla in rete e nelle strade di Roma; The Hub Roma si è presentato lo scorso sabato 7 novembre negli spazi di Ricerca e Cooperazione in via Savona. C’era Shoot for Change che ci ha fatto dei bellissimi ritratti saltanti (vedi sopra, mentre salto con Conny ed Ivan). C’erano dei vecchi amici come Andrea e Daniele di Kanso, Giuanluca di Liberi Nantes e Stefano di Kidzdream, ma soprattutto molte facce nuove, incuriosite ed entusiaste. In tutto, più di cento persone!

Una cosa è certa: Roma è entrata in piena fase di start-up, ormai è una questione di mesi e anche la capitale avrà un Hub tutto suo, in cui far decollare centinaia di progetti innovativi in ambito sociale e ambientale. In bocca al lupo ragazzi… o meglio, in bocca alla lupa!

El Hub Oaxaca tiene ya un espacio piloto para saber si nuestro sueño —crear una comunidad de apoyo mutuo para emprendedores y luchadores sociales en Oaxaca— tiene la capacidad de inspirar a otros y vida para el futuro, para darle cabida a todos los que tienen ganas de hacer algo para mejorar nuestro entorno.

El comienzo es, como en todo buen proyecto social, modesto: dos habitaciones con un bello tapanco en el frente de una vieja casona del siglo XVIII, conocida como los Tres Patios, en Cosijopii 208A. El lugar es acogedor, tibio y ventilado, un espacio rico y vital en la parte norte del centro de la ciudad de Oaxaca, para más señas a unas cuadras de la iglesia del Carmen Alto y del cineclub El Pochote.

Hasta ahora nos hemos comunicado a través de este blog y de un boletín de actualizaciones. El esfuerzo ha rendido sus frutos, cada día nos visitan más y más personas interesadas en el proyecto y que comienzan a ver en el blog una herramienta para comunicar lo que están haciendo o para buscar lo que les hace falta. Ese es el espíritu del Hub Oaxaca.

Ahora podremos hacer lo mismo en este espacio físico, donde gente de la ciudad y de las comunidades pueda compartir experiencias, consejos, trabajo y contactos para nuestros propios proyectos.

Es un lugar para trabajar, donde la gente pueda desarrollar sus ideas, navegar en Internet, tener apoyo técnico y asesorias estratégicas en lo que necesiten.

Apenas estamos ocupando el espacio, faltan muchas cosas, detalles que se resuelven poco a poco —muebles, tecnología, diseño— pero el empuje es vital para consolidar el proyecto. Hemos pasado horas pensando cómo hacer un lugar armónico, en el que se antoje trabajar y compartir.

Muy pronto te invitaremos a conocerlo y a que participes de la planeación. Ayúdanos con tus ideas para diseñar este espacio, tú espacio.

PASSENGER numbers have nose-dived at one of Scotland’s best known low-cost airports.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport said the number of people travelling through the Ayrshire hub are down 28 per cent year on year.

The plunge – to 152,000 passengers – was dismissed as being “in line with recent trends”.

But bosses are now pinning their hopes on winter-sun flights and summer bookings for 2010 to help see them through the recession.

Graeme Sweenie, chief commercial officer, admitted: “2009 has certainly been a challenging year for the airport.

Insisting that the airport’s prospects remained “excellent”, he pointed to the fact that operator Ryanair had recently laid on more winter flights as being a positive sign.

He added: “These new destinations are a huge vote of confidence in Glasgow Prestwick by Europe’s largest low fares airline.

Capacity

“The summer 2010 schedule is now on sale to over thirty destinations.”

“We understand that competing airlines at Glasgow Airport have reduced their capacity for summer 2010, so our strategy of being Scotland’s year-round gateway to sun, sea and sangria is working well for us, and hurting our competitors.”

Earlier this month figures released by aviation consultancy RDC Aviation showed that Britain’s 33 busiest airports had all reported lower figures for the first eight months of the year than previously.

British traveller are taking nine per cent fewer flights overall, it said, with Gatwick in London the biggest loser, seeing passenger traffic down by two million.

It’s been 7 years since I last updated the Kesler Communications website. The longstanding excuse has been that clients come first – and I’m busy – so the needs of the firm are put aside until a “better time.” Of course, a better time rarely comes.

However, with the advent of social media and my increased interest in using it to help clients with marketing, it was imperative that I bring the site into the 21st century.

While planning I realized that most of our relevant information was already available on the web – LinkedIn, Facebook (fanpage), flickr, twitter, etc. – contained everything a prospective client or partner needed to see. Why waste time re-writing the book? Instead, I gathered the information scattered about the web, and herded it all to the new site – creating, in effect,  a hub with easy access to all the social media I already use and some that I’m excited to begin – including this blog.

One of the best things about setting the site up this way is the opportunity created for conversation. Do you have something to say about one of my portfolio pieces? My goal for the site – or the peripheries of the site – is that they not remain static. With daily updates and participation I envision a forum in which clients, prospective clients, colleagues, partners and friends can comment on and partake in the process of graphic design and learn to understand its value to good marketing.

The project, known as Solomon is expected to cost around US$3,34bn.

Within the next two years Western Australia’s big new iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX: FMG) will decide whether it will open up a new iron ore mining area in the Pilbara of Western Australia.

The project known as Solomon was detailed at the Sydney Mining Club and was said to have a development cost of A$3.6 billion (US$3.34 billion).

Fortescue launched its operations through the Cloudbreak mine in the Chichester Range to export to China through a port developed by the company at Anderson Point in Port Hedland. The company has started development on its second mine, Christmas Creek, also in the Chichester Range.

Solomon is well west of Cloudbreak. It was indicated the company’s capacity out of Port Hedland may cater only for ore from the Chichester hub, so a second port and new rail link would be required to a Pilbara port at Anketell Point – particularly if Fortescue ramps up beyond 155 million tonnes per annum of export ore.

The cost of developing Solomon would take in A$850 million (US$790.8 million) for the mine, a similar amount for the railway, and A$700 million (US$651.3 million) for processing plant

The company claimed that while a lot more drilling was required the Solomon hub had potential to be much larger than the Chichester Ranges operations, currently mining at a rate of 38 Mtpa and gearing to increase to 95 Mtpa.

The Solomon mine could begin at 60 Mtpa, expanding to 100 Mtpa.

While Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek are bedded iron formations, not mined elsewhere in the Pilbara at this stage, Solomon has a mix in its iron ore geology and includes what is known as channel iron deposits.

Sydney Mining Club delegates were told that exploration in the Pilbara in the past five years has yielded reserves and resources for Fortescue of 6.3 billion tonnes, including reserves of 1.6 billion tonnes.  The discovery cost was put at A2cents a tonne.

Fortescue dominates the landholdings for iron ore in the Pilbara with 17,400 square kilometres, compared to Rio Tinto with 11,000 sq km and BHP Billiton 6,500 sq km.

Fortescue’s holdings include a large number of coastal and offshore tenements, assumedly for ironsands shed over the eons. The company also holds coastal and offshore tenements in New Zealand for ironsands.
