Either way, it is interesting to know more about the Aum. Personally, I quite like chanting and I don’t have any problems with inhibition or awkwardness. As a teenager while in my mother’s yoga class, I was always curious how long I could make my ‘Aums’. For some reason, the chanting brought me in contact with something deeper, something steady, still and strong.

Aum is the most sacred of holy words, the supreme mantra and symbolizes and embodies Brahman, the Absolute Reality. According to the Hindu and yoga philosophy, Aum is the primordial sound from which the whole universe was created. Another word for Aum is pranava, which means ‘the best praise or the best prayer’. The Aum mantra is constantly repeated in unison with the breath and the purpose is to become free from suffering and limitation. The symbol AUM is composed of four elements: the first three are vocal sounds: A, U, and M. The fourth sound, unheard, is the silence which begins and ends the audible sound, the silence which surrounds it.

• The letter ‘A’ resonates in the center of the mouth and symbolizes the conscious or waking state. This is the level of mechanics, science, logical reason and the lower three chakras.
• The letter ‘U’ transfers the sense of vibration to the back of the mouth and symbolizes the dream state. This is the realm of dreams, divinities, imagination and the inner world.
• The letter ‘M’ is created while humming with lips gently closed and resonates forward in the mouth and buzzes throughout the head. This sound represents the dreamless sleep state of the mind and spirit. Only pure consciousness exists.
• The entire symbol stands for the fourth state, which combines all these states and transcends them. This is the state of Samādhi.

The three letters A, U and M also symbolize the absence of desire, fear and anger, while the whole symbol stands for the perfect man, one whose wisdom is firmly established in the divine. They represent the three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter and the three tenses – past, present and future – while the entire symbol represents all creation together with the Creator.

“Very nice of your brother.  To leave his friends and study in England.”

“Of course, he’s.  He’s the best.”

“Yes, yes.  I can see that.  He’s the best brother.  And not forgetting, he is also the handsomest brother in the entire universe.” Mayi teased knowing how much Hane adored her big brother.

Hane reached over and tickled Mayi and they both collapsed into laughters.

What a welcome the weekend was. 

We were both exhausted and weary from the past week.  What made us go downtown by the capitol in Richmond so early on a Saturday morning, I don’t remember.  But there we were, having parked and walking around with some welcome free time to do whatever we wanted.   Then we saw the White Castle and said, “Let’s get some breakfast.”

We went in and sat on stools at two of the few counter places in the little cafe.  Nobody else was in there.  An older African American woman took our order.  She has gotten up so early this morning and is running the place by herself, I thought.   As she fried the bacon and carefully put the eggs on the griddle, we sat quietly and watched.

Above the sound of the blower above the griddle, I could faintly hear her humming.  I believe it was a hymn that was very familiar to me.  Whatever it was about the moment, it got my full attention, and she spoke to me a sermon that rivaled any Sunday sermon I ever heard.  It got right into my heart.  I marveled at her peace and contentment at her work.  It pointed up my own attitude so many times about ‘work.‘  It was compared to my lack of enthusiasm about the common everyday tasks of a mother and wife that were part of my life.   As she placed the plates in front of us and we began to eat, I felt humbled by her kind service to me.

That has been years ago now, but it is stamped in the memory, because it made me want to be more like her.  Lord, make me to be more thankful, grateful, content, and kinder in the work that you have given me to do.

In 1999, when a student from the University of Florida, Gainesville, published this song in the Net for the very first time, it took a whole lot of people by surprise. Nobody knew that such a gem of a song had existed, until then. It is pretty disappointing that this awesome song of Tabla brilliance was never captured for posterity for all others to enjoy. That is where even I am frustrated. This song had its day of awe, enjoyment, comments, etc., in 1999, thanks to the new era of Internet Ilaiyaraaja I am resurrecting it once again here in 2013. Basically, this song’s prelude and interludes are simply extraordinary. கிண்ணாரத்தில் கிண் என்று ஆரம்பமாகும். அதில் தேன் போல் சின்னக்குயில் சித்ராவின் குரல். அடுத்து டேக்-ஆஃப் எடுக்கும் பாருங்கள் தபேலா…ஆகா….ஆகா….

முதல் இடையிசையில் what is the matterனு கேட்கும் அளவுக்கு அட்டகாசமான Sax. அங்கு வரும் guitar strumming and the group Western violins. Man, you got to be kidding me )

என்னவென்று சொல்வது. இந்தப் படமும் படு பயங்கர ஹிட். ஒவ்வொரு பாடலும் இசைஞானியின் மைல்கல் பாடல்களில் ஒன்று என்று சொல்லும் அளவுக்கு அதகளப்பட்ட ஆல்பம். At that time, the prodigious Maestro Ilaiyaraaja was probably only slower than the speed of light He was so prodigious that he literally kept on giving more songs that the lead actor and the director could handle, that they dropped this song without filming it.

Only a few lucky winners of ordering Echo original cassettes — that were fully white in color with blue print — were able to listen to this song. At that time, I wasn’t as lucky as I couldn’t afford to buy a cassette for Rs. 35 However, my friend had it. The very next versions of Echo Cassettes had YET another new song that was not picturized as well, with this song being left out. Dang!

So, in the mid 90s, I was able to capture this song from my friend’s Echo cassette.

The reason I am giving it in this quiz is to give each one of us the opportunity to really listen to this song’s interludes and prelude in full to see, what an outstanding song of Tabla and Kinnaaram brilliance it is! One will fall in love with this song, if they were to hear it with KS Chitra’s euphonious voice in full.

Perfect song, outstanding song, but, what a foolish decision to have just left it out that you really cannot find this song prominently on the web, even after so many years. I am chafed.

But, no worries. This song calms all disappointments. Just listen to it repeatedly and see the magical spell it will cast

Sir, songs like these may be trifles for ஞானிகள் like you, but, not for mortals like us . Please ensure that none of this gets buried in time. Please release these tracks for a wider audience. Thank you.

Thoroughly noise-removed and a step-by-step noise-reduction and noise-gate technique was used to thoroughly eliminate hiss noise, so much so, that there will be absolutely no salt-and-pepper or hissing noise in this entire track, even where there is pin-drop-silence at the beginning portions of the prelude. Volume was maximized, but, tempo was unchanged. Bass was NOT altered either. For an out-of-the-world Bass experience, use HQ sub-woofers or headphones. Hane and Kaoru went to their favourite hideout in the yard.  They have some time before their next activities.  Hane eagerly continued her book while Kaoru listened intently to the music streaming from his headphones and looked at the music scores he has laid on his laps.  Now and then, he fingered something in the air as if he was playing some invisible instrument.

The air was chirpy today even though spring has begun.  The school was becoming alive again with the sounds of activities going on.  Shouts of commands and encouragement from the baseball team; the loud “thwonk” of the tennis ball hitting the racket; the wooden clank from the kendo club; the drift of singing from the choir…

Hane was enjoying her story when she heard a soft tune.  She put down her book and looked at Kaoru.  He was so engrossed in his music that he was humming along with it.

Unable to contain her curiosity, she tapped Kaoru’s shoulder and asked, “What are you listening to?”

Kaoru looked up from his music scores and stared at Hane.  Hane gestured to his headphones.  Kaoru blinked and then comprehension dawned on his eyes as he took his headphones down.

“What are you listening to?”

“Oh…Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.”

When Kaoru saw the blank look on Hane’s face, he smiled and then he reached over and put his headphones on her ears.  Then he clicked the replay button on his iPod.

Kaoru’s smile broadened when he saw Hane became absorbed by the music.

I have always wanted to try making this sort of black traditional school uniform for them as this is my favourite type of uniform in anime/manga.  And yes, I did it finally.  Mikado’s was the first prototype and the fit was too snug.  Tetsu’s too loose.  Kaoru’s just nice.  For Hane’s, I based her sailor uniform on a SD boy sailor outfit.  Surprisingly, the fit is quite ok.  Instead of ribbon for the collar, I used a daisy-chain trimming.  All in all, I was quite happy with the result. (*^_^*)

The photos were taken in the morning but the sun was very strong.  So the first attempt failed because Kaoru looked washed out and pale in the harsh light.  For the second attempt, I covered the window with white cloth to diffuse the harsh light.  Photos were then slightly processed.  They looked better.  (^_^)

I live with my better-half who is obsessed with music, singing, dancing, and humming songs almost constantly.  It can be really annoying if you ever crave absolute peace and quiet like I do at times. Every once in a while as I’m listening to music I also find myself unable to disconnect completely.  It’s maddening because I find it interfering with my everyday activities.  I’ve been in conversations with people and as I’m listening to them speak I begin to hum to myself and I can hear the lyrics in my head very clearly.  Then I begin to tap my toe to the music and then suffer from the almost uncontrollable urge to dance.  It takes all of my will power not do anything stupid and embarrass myself.  This has occurred in the past not just in casual conversations but important business conversations as well.

My mother passed away last year and as I was sitting in the church with my sister listening to the priest drone on and on I had the song "What a Man" by Salt and Pepa echoing through my head.  Why? I have no freaking idea but it was actually better than listening to that priest and thinking about my mom’s passing.

On one occasion I was driving to Pittsburgh to visit family which is eleven hours of sheer boredom.  For a large part of the trip through Pennsylvania there is little or no acceptable radio stations to listen to.  Unfortunately I also forgot my IPod and was limited to one CD I found under my seat.  For the rest of that trip and for the  next week the song, "Higher Love" by Steve Winwood drove me freaking crazy.

When I’m cooking I find myself humming and occasionally singing various songs by Luciano Pavarotti in Italian no less.  How weird is that? I love opera but it’s not something I want to hear over and over again.

This problem isn’t limited to good music but also to really bad songs and a few truly annoying television commercial theme songs. The theme songs are the absolute worst.  Lately it’s been that stupid commercial with the Korean version of Richard Simmons singing some stupid song that I don’t even understand while he hops around the screen in a pukey green sport coat with a bunch of pistachios.  I ‘d look up the name of the song for you but what’s the point, I hate that stupid song.

I think the worst part of this problem is that once I capture a song in my head, it’s there forever. I have quite a long list of tunes that show up unannounced at the weirdest times to entertain me. I may be forced to involve myself with some sort of meditation program that will allow me to sit quietly and purge my mind of all this nonsense.  Maybe I’ll become a Buddhist monk where I can spend my time in quiet self-reflection in an attempt to make these evil music demons go away.

As I’ve been writing this I’ve been humming "Three Time a Lady" by Lionel Richey.  Someone please help me!

The melody, my ear alone enjoyed.
