I just finished transferring a Ruby on Rails web site from one server to another and also transferri

I just finished transferring a Ruby on Rails web site from one server to another and also transferring the data from MYSQL to sqlite. I solved all the problems with some help from Pat, and learned along the way.

The first problem was with my deployment using capistrano. Setting up the git repository, pushing it up–that was easy. For some reason my deployments were not working. Git pushes and pulls worked, and I could log into the server via ssh just fine. And when I did log in via ssh, I had to type my password. So I figured that my ssh public/private keys were not uploaded to the server. So I asked my server admin to update my ssh keys, and I emailed him the contents of my .ssh dir so he could dump them in my remote home dir.

This still did not resolve the problem.

Here is what my cap deploy would result in:

[76.73.15.5] executing command
** [76.73.15.5 :: err] Permission denied, please try again.
** [76.73.15.5 :: err] Permission denied, please try again.
** [76.73.15.5 :: err] Permission denied (publickey,password).
** fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
command finished
*** [deploy:update_code] rolling back
* executing “rm -rf /home/andrew/apps/kpmstaffing/releases/20091207060339; true”
servers: ["76.73.15.5"]
[76.73.15.5] executing command
command finished
failed: “sh -c ‘git clone -q ssh://andrew@76.73.15.5/home/andrew/git/kpmstaffing /home/andrew/apps/kpmstaffing/releases

so after a while of fumbling around on my part, and expert looking and inspecting from my server admin, it was found that the problem was with my .ssh/* contents, something was wrong with those files and it was preventing my capistrano to deploy properly via ssh. So, the solution was some expert use of ssh-copy-id on the remote server. Or you could just resend your .ssh public/private keys somehow if you have this problem.

So now my cap deploy would work. The next step was to transfer the database from the live Web site to the new location.

This proved to be quite a task, even though I have done this before and I thought it was going to be easy. Well, there turned out to be some variables that I did not encounter before.

First rudiment, you have to have this file: backup.rake. I dont know where to get it from, I just had it from a project I worked on with a friend.

First thing I did was get a copy of the yml file that was automatically being made daily and sent to an email account that I have set up. I copied this file to my local computer.

Now, I also, just for fun, ran this command on the live web site:
rake db:backup:write

that created another yml file in db/backup/ on the remote server.

So now I had the auto backup yml file, and I could also make a backup yml file of the database any time I wanted. Now what?

Well, I was transferring from mysql to sqlite. So mysql wasnt a problem area because when I did the db:backup:write it just dumped all the data to a yml file in db/backup/. No problem. But on the new location of my web app, it is a bit different because you have to set up a shared db for sqlite. So first thing you have to do is alter your database.yml file to look like this in production:

production:
adapter: sqlite3
database: /home/andrew/apps/kpmstaffing/shared/db/production.sqlite3
pool: 5
timeout: 5000

Then, you have to do a cap deploy:migrate from the local computer, that puts some version of the database there, just something but its not your end product. BUT it should be the correct schema, just the data is not up to date.

Then you have to load the data in there, so get your latest backup yml file, and dump it into db/backup/ on the remote server into the correct version of the app. If you are using git then you will know what I’m talking about here.

now run these commands on the remote server:

rake db:migrate:reset RAILS_ENV=’production’
rake db:restore RAILS_ENV=’production’

That should put the data into the new shared db location. The db:restore command uses the latest file in db/backup/ and dumps data into the database.

Now, if you want to test it, run this on remote server:

./script/server -p 3001 -e production

Use whatever port you want to use, but definitely use ‘-e production’ or your test run will use the development database.

Now for some reason, I had some instructions from before to run this command to load the data into the tables:

rake db:backup:read RAILS_ENV=’production’

That ALWAYS failed and gave me this error:

rake aborted!
Don’t know how to build task ‘db:backup:read’

And I was stuck on this for a while. Finally I opened up backup.rake in lib/tasks/ to see how this file worked, and I noticed that there was no backup:read command, just “restore”. So I changed it to db:restore RAILS_ENV=’production’ and it worked.

So now my website is running. Thanks Pat for the help.

Good Morning!
Today I wanted to share my song or songs of the day. Today I don’t just have a song I have an entire album. It is Madonna’s “Confessions on a dance floor”.

Confessions on a Dancefloor

The main songs I am loving today are obviously “Hung Up” and “Sorry” Listen to these songs and pay attention to the lyrics. Even though these are pop dance songs they are still very relatable. I feel like calling up Madge herself and screaming “I get it! I so get it!!!”

And while on the topic of her Majesty I wanted you show you some of my favorite Madonna looks over the recent years.

I arrived home to a message on the answering machine from NCO. Generic. They didn’t even leave a name of whom they were calling for. I almost didn’t even bother returning it. Estate is closed. I’m not responsible for anything that doesn’t have my name on it.

The collection calls make me angry and upset me. I can just feel my blood pressure raise and the anger pulsate through my body when I have to deal with them. I had been having a good day and wasn’t in the mood to have it ruined.

I think I get upset because John and I worked so hard to have excellent credit. While the news was busy reporting about the terrible economy and how credit wasn’t being given we had taken out a home equity loan with no problems whatsoever. John and I always had fun seeing which of us had the higher FICO usually we both were between 790s and low 800s. It was usually a toss up as to which of us was higher. Usually it was, John since he had more credit and a longer history. Funny, how having less credit owed and fewer accounts can lower a score.

I HATE to think of him getting collection calls. I would hate to see what his FICO would look like now. But he’s dead. FICO’s don’t matter anymore. If I was terribly bothered I could have paid the bills, but I’m not responsible. His debts died with him. I have a large mortgage and a son to raise.

The register of wills had warned me and I already knew that credit card companies would be more than happy to let me assume the debt. She had let me know that I was NOT responsible.

Chase asked me up front.

NO!!! NO!!! NO!!!

I wonder how many people in their moments of grief or confusion, say yes. I hate when people try to take advantage of widows and I’ve already had a few occasions that I’ve felt that way. Being a young widow sucks- a long lonely life ahead of me and having to be a single parent- but at least I have all of my senses with me- I’m not confused or gullible (or no more so than I was when I had John around) or senile.

The first collection agency call that I returned was from Chase. I was rather abrupt with the lady. I told her that I’d already notified Chase and they had the information. I had told them that the estate was closed. I told her that I knew it was not my responsibility. I told her I’d lost my husband- the love of my life- to cancer and how terrible that was. Nathaniel wasn’t happy and was screaming in the background. I think she just wanted me off of her line. She told me that she’d take care of it and I confirmed that I would not receive any more calls. Thus far, I have not.

Today, while I was feeding I returned the call to NCO. My policy has been that if the company can’t bother enough to leave a name- I can’t be bothered enough to return a call, but; I figured if I didn’t, they’d keep calling and I need my sleep. I also figured that I had horses to feed and if I could multitask it would be done and over with before grain was dispensed.

The first lady that answered the phone asked for the reference number. I told her I didn’t have it. She looked up the account by the phone number. She said she was calling for John Smith. I said, “He’s dead.” The line went dead. I assume she hung up as I was on the land line.

I called back and the next gentleman, Frank, saw instantly that John had passed away and said that it would be taken care of and I would not receive any calls. I asked where the bill was from. It was a co-pay from Hopkins.

It felt greedy to me that they would bother sending a co-pay to a collection agency after all of the thousands of dollars that they got from Care First. John’s IL2 treatments were about 100,000 alone.

Dr. Sharfman gave up on John months ago and wanted him in hospice. He didn’t even care enough to call with condolences, come to the services, send flowers, or send a card. Instead all I got- like 6 weeks after John had died- was a form letter that wasn’t even folded straight.

I pictured the death notification getting put in a pile on somebody’s desk and it getting handled when there was time. Of course, why would John’s death be important to Dr. Sharfman? His life certainly wasn’t.

I feel like there was a lot of John’s care with Dr. Sharfman at Hopkins that was “put in some pile.” It was known that John had cancer in his bones, but they never put him on medication to combat that (the orthopedic doctor was surprised and surprised that John didn’t have an orthopedic doctor as part of his care team). John also got one treatment to boost his blood count and was supposed to get it with every chemo, but he didn’t (it was painful and I knew John didn’t want it, so I never pushed the issue.) Then there was the time that I practically had to throw a fit to get a damn x-ray of his hip that was causing John constant pain. That hospital doctor irritated me to no end- standing there watching John writhe in pain, but doing nothing for it.

The most important lesson that I learned through John’s illness is that you have to stand up for your own care… nobody else is going to stand up for you. You are your own health care advocate. The doctors and nurses have other rooms to go to, other patients to visit. The patient has one life and it is his/hers alone to live. The patient must cope with pain, with disabilities, etc and find a way to continue living. The doctors- they move on- it’s not his/her body or his/her pain. (I certainly don’t want to slam the medical community because there are excellent doctors and nurses out there- we had some. Dr. Sharfman was just not the right doctor for us. He is known for being a whiz at IL2 and does come highly regarded. I also do know that we aren’t alone in our dissatisfaction.)

I know there are probably critics out there that would say, you just don’t like the man because your husband died. I would beg to differ. I realize that everybody can’t be saved. We were fighting a losing battle, we knew the odds were stacked against us. A little compassion goes a long way and we needed a doctor who was realistic, but willing to support us and be our commander for our battle.

We still respected Dr. Khatri after Ann died.

Although I’d admit, I wouldn’t send my worst enemy (if I had a worst enemy) to Dr. Thresher after he misdiagnosed Ann (sinus infection was diagnosed as sinus cancer), Dave (I was told that John’s father also had the same misdiagnosis sinus infection was later correctly diagnosed as lung cancer), & myself (I was basically told that my pain that was later diagnosed as interstitial cystitis was all in my head and that I should swim to help my muscles).

In my experiences, Dr. Foster, our cat vet, did the best job of handling impending death. We had taken Stray Grey (Toby) to him after he had been attacked by something. Dr. Foster examined him and found his injuries to be life ending. He called and compassionately explained the extend of the injures. Dr. Foster explained the injuries without belittling my intelligence and simultaneously not speaking over my head. His professional opinion was that he recommended euthanasia. He offered the option that we could send him to a specialist at Penn State, but that it was highly unlikely that he’d survive and given the fact that Toby was a stray and not used to human handling it would terrify him and he would probably fight any efforts to heal him. He thought about the patient and didn’t want Toby to experience fear or terror since he already distrusted humans. I gave him the okay to euthanize and felt confident knowing I’d made the right decision.

More about Toby later…

I know that Hopkins was just doing business. Writing off and clearing their bad debts. It breaks my heart to think of John as a “bad debt.”

But, I guess in a way, I’m just doing business too. The law says I’m not responsible. Somebody else can take the loss… I’ve had enough.

Yes you heard correct, a freakin rewind, fast forward, pull the tape out, stick a pencil in tape cassette, and if you catch them on their current UK tour these are being handed out all decorated and collectible like. Along with a clip of their super sleazy track ‘Hung Up’, there’s some banging tunes and a Will Smith, big willy style cameo on it. I’d recommend joy riding the nearest escort, driving down a country lane and banging this out.

If you don’t know what a tape actually is or just want to hear this now it’s been uploaded to their blog, so although this feels like cheating it’s posted here for you to download.

What do all guys love? Sex.
What do all girls love? Dancing.
Who has full panty melting power over girls across the world? Madonna.
If you’re a dude who can cut a rug and the DJ happens to throw one of these tracks on…well, you pretty much have the pick of the litter. The logic is simple.

Leaning heavily on Abba’s “Gimme Gimme Gimme” but has enough of it’s own groove to keep you interested.

Using a gospel choir and Prince on lead guitar is kind of cheating but that aside this is a monster of a pop song.

This week Madonna releases her third greatest hits collection, that’s 1,769 fewer than Elvis P

This week Madonna releases her third greatest hits collection, that’s 1,769 fewer than Elvis Presley. The logical step would be to make ‘Celebration’ a third volume of her greatest hits, a companion to ‘The Immaculate Collection’ and ‘GHV2′ but no, there are only three songs that didn’t feature on her previous greatest hits collections.

Admittedly compiling a whole CD of Madonna songs released since 2001 that people will actually want to listen to is a task equal to finding signs of intelligent life in an Akon song. But what other way can we teach the generation of tomorrow about Madonna?

What do we tell them about the best-selling female artist of all time? That there’s more to her than her frequent child-grabbing jaunts to Africa? Which although nobody can quite explain what is morally or ethically wrong about her doing so, the fact that she has the full support of the Daily Mail is vindication for the doubters.

Including a new song is de rigeur for greatest hits compilations now (note that I didn’t say in vogue), so new single ‘Celebration’ is one of the three differences from GHV2/Immaculate Collection, along with

‘Hung Up’ and ‘4 Minutes’, none of which are worth parting with cash for. These are songs that don’t compare to ‘Material Girl’ or ‘Papa Don’t Preach’, hell, these are songs that don’t even compare to ‘La Isla Bonita’!

The whole compilation could serve as an advert for The Immaculate Collection, there’s good songs on Celebration for sure, but they already featured on the former. Almost as if Madonna knows in her heart what we’ve all been wrestling with for years: She’s rubbish now.

Madonna is the biggest argument for mandatory retirement ages, 1998’s Ray of Light was her last good album, since then we’ve had a trail of shudder inducing efforts with the occasional passable single as she continually reinvents herself: credible pop singer, cowboy, catwoman, englishwoman, guitarist, muscleman, film director’s wife, dance instructor (to the righteous disgust of millions), prune, child adopter, cactus, hotel porter, bicycle, dentist, the list goes on.

For those of us who used to listen to our grandparent’s stories of how her music used to be good, it’s mildly painful to watch and definitely frustrating, I mean what was American Life if not a smouldering pile of musical crap? The cover for Hard Candy could be confused with that of a magazine that was erroneously delivered to a newsagents I worked in at the time, called ‘65 and Up’.

But age shall not wither her, she’ll be releasing albums when she’s eighty (next year or something), which I guess I can live with, as long as she doesn’t release another ’sex’ book. I’m not sure I can guarantee that she won’t.

O diretor do clipe é Jonas Akerlund, também responsável por “Ray Of Light” e “I’m Going To Tell You A Secret”, e o vídeo já vai entrar no DVD.

How embarrassing!

When designer Malcolm Harris (of Designers for Darfur) was told Angelina Jolie was calling him, he promptly hung up on her. Twice!

No, he isn’t stupid, although we’re sure he feels that way, but at the time he was under the impression that someone was prank calling him. It was a reasonable enough assumption.

How many people actually get phone calls from Angie??????

He was finally convinced when she reminded him that they were both participating in World Refugee Day this coming Saturday. Once they got over the awkward hurdle, Jolie generously bought three of Harris’ dresses for $225 each, knowing that a percentage of the proceeds go to the UN’s refugee effort.

Harris confirmed the story and said, “I was so flattered.”

Yeah, you should be!

WE COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND Malcolm…. We would have done the same thing LOL

“Peep Show” is a paradox in a sea of chaos. The publicity blitz behind this new show at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino teases at what the show might be. What it is is a throwback to what old Vegas used to revel in: an adult show that keys into what Vegas was originally loved for but made modern.

In making the show into the essence of fairy tales mixed with club beats and elements of burlesque, the show truly hits is mark. The show is actually and possibly a little too progressive for its audience. The show that this reminds me of is actually the cool club burlesque shows that I used to see back in NYC in the early 90s at El Flamingo in Chelsea mixing everything that was cool and modern. Unlike the equally ravishing and former “Le Femme” where it is all about watching voyeuristically, “Peep Show” brings you into the fun. The girls respond when they know you are enjoying the performance. Mel B works well as the Mistress Of Ceremonies because she can interact with the audience with her personality which sometimes is lost on entertainers in Vegas in today’s age. Possibly the shortcoming of the show is how early it plays. This is a 10:30pm show catered to the young with gusto.

As a spectator I was applauding and encouraging the performers at all points to their chagrin as were a couple girls two rows behind me. I can see this show as being one where people stand up and dance but that didn’t happen which was surprising. It has that energy and the performers seem really into it. Even though Kelly Monaco is fairly quiet throughout the performance, her impact is there in playing the innocence. In all fairness, her body and the way she plays it out to the end is stellar and unbelievably sexy. Her pouting as a Cirque like hunk dunks himself in a bathtub of water equals anything seen in “Zumanity”.

Another wonderful balance was the inclusion of Josh Strickland who grounds the entire show. Most will remember him as a finalist from “American Idol” a couple years back. For men, he doesn’t intimidate within the settings but his voice is phenomenal and rich framing the piece like a Tom Jones with the beauty around him lending an undeniable grace and showmanship that is cool but not grandstanding. Belting out some of the notes while a girls writhe and sultrily flow through the scenes makes the show at times rapturous.

The framing of a pumpkin with Josh sitting atop singing offering a beautiful Russian girl in green who eventually ends up working a steel pole encourages the fire. In a wraparound fashion with girls in similar progressions on either side of the stage, the Russian brunette strips down with knowing playfulness. I had heard that the show had elements of what made “Moulin Rouge” [the real one and the movie one] so intrinsic. It does this by melding music both contemporary (Madonna’s club hit “Hung Up”) to new pieces like “Pink” which had a supposed audience member tied up on a bed and ravished by many of the women, again in playful but assertive fashion.

However one of the most showstopping numbers that upped the energy had the back light of the girls all in silouette being brought to forefront straddling wooden saddle-like props. The visceral nature of it was great, with the girls in full bloom and aware. The lead performer in the front eventual straddles a swing while stripteasing as it swings back and forth above you. This was too much for some of the audience members behind me to handle. However a couple of us (including yours truly) were clapping along with the beat.

The eventual reveal of Kelly Monaco in her full glory plays to that ultimate Olivia Newton John fantasy from “Grease”: from good girl to bad girl with a little good still left inside, the paradox of all. For men and women, this is a great show as long as you get it and go with the flow. The enthusiasm here is unbelievable and you can tell all the performers very much enjoy it. You definitely get that. And the fact of the reveal that this is actually a topless show in the nouveau style (which “La Femme” encompassed as well) has the girls actually not wearing pasties which always seems a cop out anyway. It is all about the tease which is apparent in a cheerleader girl sequence as well as a dance sequence where the girls are barely covered by silken threads that bounce up as they are dancing. It is sexy and alluring because of that. Not too much but just enough to keep the blood flowing. Apparently, the pasties were there just a couple weeks ago but the ante was upped to make the “au naturale”. The show is all the better for it because the show knows itself and embraces it. Granted Monaco and Mel B don’t go inflagrante but they get as close as possible. The performers here all go for the gusto. They could have played it safe but they push the edge both musically, dancewise and edgewise in terms of sensuality. But it all adds up to a energetic experience that right now is fairly singular on the Strip.

After the show, talking to one of the floor managers, it was interesting to hear the responses of different audiences. It is perfect for bachelor or bachelorette parties (as one girl at a later Cinevegas party that night told me). It is one of those shows that has the ability to evolve and evoke as long as the audience is there and establishes a true following. The Pussycat Dolls in LA once had a great following while mixing it up with the various cast members. Mel B and Kelly Monaco leave the show in a couple days with Holly Madison of “The Girls Next Door” and Playboy fame taking over for Kelly Monaco and one of the leads from “Wicked” on Broadway taking over for Mel B. The turning over of talent if done right would really keep it fresh and keep people coming back again and again. I would for sure. Someone like Lindsey Lohan (who was rumored) playing the Monaco part with another celeb like Katy Perry or Rosario Dawson coming in for two months or so for Mel B’s part could really solidify its potential.

On a technical note, the band was phenomenal as it was all live. There is obvious talk about pre-recording in the coming months which would be a shame since the “live” aspect adds to the energy. For example if “Movin’ Out” on Broadway in NYC was pre-recorded or even “KA” here in Vegas, it would change the concept of what the show conceptually is. Josh Strickland, who again really kept the show in perspective, is staying for the time being which is a great boon at keeping that throughline. This gives the show more possibility. Talking to him briefly after the show as he and the other performers slipped away, his excitement about the show was apparent.

“Peep Show” is one of those rare shows in Vegas that captures its moment in time that doesn’t revel in the past but rather in the here and now and makes it timeless. It needs to be intrepidly discovered by the over-18 youth and under 40 jet set types who can really dig it. Some know about it but for the LA and NY sect (especially with the burlesque scene heating up in the Melrose corridor) who don’t and like the essence of sexy, slick, outgoing brashness with a dash of fun, this is a great view into that world.
