René Rast strives for fifth win There is no time for rest in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup: Just one

René Rast strives for fifth win

There is no time for rest in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup: Just one week after the race on the street circuit in the harbour of Valencia, the popular brand trophy series now heads to the legendary Spa-Francorchamps track for Sunday’s race. René Rast, who convincingly underlined his title aspirations with his fourth straight win in Spain, is particularly looking forward to his trip to Belgium – the difficult circuit in the Ardennes is his absolute favourite.

“Spa is a real challenge with its many corners that require backbone – like Eau Rouge for instance,” says the VELTINS MRS Racing pilot from Germany. Last year, he started from pole position here with his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, “but things didn’t go so well in the race. I hope it’ll be different this year.”

Impressive season

Jeroen Bleekemolen, however, is determined to prevent this. The title defender from the Netherlands can look back on an impressive season so far: Of the nine races to date, he has won three and climbed the podium at every single round. His clear lead in the championship, which he has held since the season-opening round in Bahrain, is now coming under increasing threat thanks to René Rast’s winning streak. With four races left on the calendar, Bleekemolen lies 30 points ahead of his closest rival. The Dutchman would very much like to win a race again, but with an eye on the title he is not prepared to take any great risks. “We are now in a phase where points are more important than wins,” says the third place-getter from last year. The points’ leader hopes, however, to put his title rivals in their place in Belgium. “For a driver, Spa is very demanding. It’s easy to make a mistake here, especially when the weather is bad. That’s where I see my chance.”

No less gripping than the title fight between Jeroen Bleekemolen and René Rast is the close battle for third in the overall classification. Patrick Huisman, the Supercup stalwart from the Netherlands competing for the SPS Performance squad, snatched back third overall in Valencia after a breathtaking charge through the field ahead of Slovakian Stefan Rosina (Walter Lechner Racing School), who had clinched it at the previous round.

Ireland’s Damien Faulkner is hoping for good results for the rest of the season: After a rather disappointing year, the vice champion of 2007 and 2008 and pilot for Walter Lechner Racing School made an impressive comeback in Spain – but only in qualifying. Taking up the race from third on the grid he only made it to the first corner before being nudged out of contention in a collision. He now anticipates bringing home his first podium result of the season.

Television stations “Eurosport 2” (11.45 hrs) and “Sky Sport 2” (11.40 hrs) broadcast the race in Spa-Francorchamps live on 30 August. In addition, “Eurosport” televises highlights on Sunday evening in its “Motorsport Weekend Magazin” programme.

This will be a short post as I covered a lot of the race in detail in my special post on whether Bar

This will be a short post as I covered a lot of the race in detail in my special post on whether Barrichello was Fast or Fortunate. If you haven’t read it yet, you really should because I think it is a good summary of the race action.

Anyway, let’s get right to it then. As usual, here is a graph of the average lap times and standard deviation spread for the European GP:

(By the way, if you need more info on my calculation methods then please refer to my post on Driver Consistency Explained)

What does this graph tell us? As usual, the average lap time increases the further we move down the order. Also, if you have a mechanical problem, your slowing down laps leading to your retirement really increase your average! Finally, while not last, Badoer’s average lap time is three seconds a lap slower than Barrichello (The race winner), almost two seconds a lap slower than his team mate Raikkonen and almost a second or two seconds slower than Alguersuari and Grosjean.

A fairer way of measuring Driver Consistency is to remove the laps where pit stops were made, any laps containing mechanical problems and also any safety car/penalty laps (I’m looking at you, Badoer!). So here is the graph:

Now things are a little bit more interesting. As mentioned in my previous post, Hamilton has a slightly faster average lap time but this may be because Barrichello decided not to push the car once he knew he had won the race. Rosberg just pips Kovalainen, Glock moves up the order as he set some fast times near the end, Vettel and Grosjean improve by a couple of places (while Nakajima and Buemi, the other retirees do not) and Fisichella moves down the grid as he was running a one-stop pit strategy.

But the main focus for me must be how poor Badoer is. Again, he is over three seconds slower on average than Barrichello and two seconds slower than Raikkonen.

In fact, the gap between himself and Raikkonen is greater than that of the race winner (Barrichello) to 19th (Buemi). Now, I know he wasn’t allowed to test the car beforehand and he has had no race experience for something like ten years, but it was a very poor performance and I don’t think Ferrari should have put him in a situation like this where he was seemingly doomed to fail…

If we study Badoer’s individual lap times compared to the other drivers, it becomes even more revealing how badly he did:

Here is the same graph again, zoomed in on the racing laps:

It’s a bit messy, but we can see that Badoer is consistently slower than all the other drivers except for Alguersuari, who had probably never driven the circuit before. Grosjean (the other rookie) does significantly better than both of them after he pits to replace a damaged wing around lap 9.

But in F1, they say that the first person you have to beat is your team mate, so here are the same two graphs again, but with just Badoer and Raikkonen:

…And zoomed in:

What is shocking here is that Badoer seems to completely lose it after his first pit stop, where he gave way to Grosjean behind him and crossed the white line, incurring a drive through penalty. But if you look at his second stint, his lap times vary by up to Four Seconds Per Lap! Now, I know he would have been lapped a few times during the race, but there’s no way you would have to yield that much to let a car past? For example, Grosjean gets lapped on Lap 12 but only loses a second of time on that lap.

Clearly Badoer was having major issues with the car and did spin off a few times during this stint. By contrast, Raikkonen’s race is very different. He drives super consistently over the whole race, almost as consistent as Barrichello, which is very impressive!

One final point, I have noticed a few comments on the web defending Badoer which I would like to address:

“Well, Badoer improved by three seconds a lap over the course of the race so he can’t be that bad…”

Look closely at the graph with all the drivers and you will see that they all improved by the same amount. In fact, when you look at the final graph, Badoer is 1.5 seconds slower than Raikkonen at the beginning and the end of the race. The only time he gets closer is after Raikkonen pits and has a heavier car.

“Badoer’s best lap was 103% of the winner’s best lap – far below the old 107% cut off that they used to enforce for qualifying…”

This got me thinking … what has been the gap across the field for each race this season? Here’s what it looks like, with an added data set of the gap between the two Ferraris and the Ferrari Gap to pole:

Note: where the Ferraris did not both qualify in Q3 I have taken the best times from the last session where both Ferraris participated.

Ignoring the fact that being three seconds a lap on average slower than Barrichello (which implies his average speed was just over 103% of Barrichello), the fact that Badoer’s time was a whole percentage point than the second to last guy (Alguersuari in the Toro Rosso) is very telling. Although he did not have the worst percentage difference over the whole season, it is his gap to 19th (Alguersuari) which is bad – a whole percentage point, or 1.5 Seconds!

It is worth noting that the honour of worst performance in qualifying this year goes to Fisichella in a Force India… but this was in Spain, with a massively underdeveloped car. The Ferrari in Valencia has been proven to be competitive – in fact, Raikkonen finished in third place.

If you look at the gap between the Ferrari’s it is often very small – the largest was 1% in Spain – yet Badoer is 2.5% slower than Raikkonen (about 2.5 Seconds). If Badoer had equalled Massa’s worst qualifying performance relative to Raikkonen (Spain), then allowing for fuel corrected times he could have set a fuel-corrected qualifying lap of 1:39.831 which could have put him in the top 10 or just outside of it.

What this means is that the idea that Badoer’s time falls within a long-outdated method of measuring if a driver was worthy of starting a race may not justify his performance, because he was clearly a lot slower than expected of a Ferrari driver. What amazes me most is that Ferrari must have tons more data than I have to analyse Badoer’s woeful performance – yet they insist on giving him a seat for Belgium!

I reckon Ferrari should have never hired him in the first place – he was never going to be ready and I think they should save face and get another driver for the rest of the season. Do you agree? Who would you pick? Or have I been too harsh on the poor guy?

René Rast keeps title fight open with fourth win

René Rast is the man of the day in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup: On the street circuit in the harbour of Valencia, the German celebrated his fourth win in succession with the 911 GT3 Cup of VELTINS MRS Racing, and with this keeps the fight for the title open. In a gripping duel at the head of the field, he again beat Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands), the Konrad Motorsport pilot, title defender and current points’ leader. Surprisingly, third place went to Lance David Arnold (Germany) competing for SPS Performance who had started from twelfth on the grid.

Taking up the race from pole position, René Rast got away well and successfully held off the constantly attacking Jeroen Bleekemolen in the early phase. The Dutchman turned the fastest lap on the Grand Prix circuit in the Spanish America’s Cup harbour in his attempt, but did not manage to overtake. With his victory and four races to go, the reigning Carrera Cup champion Rast reduced his gap to Bleekemolen, who has led since the beginning of the season, to just 30 points.

For two drivers who took off with great hopes, their race was already over in the first corner: Jiri Janak from the Czech Republic (Konrad Motorsport) braked too late and sent not only himself but Damien Faulkner into retirement. For the Irishman from Walter Lechner Racing School, and vice-champion from 2007 and 2008, this was particularly tragic: His third in qualifying was his best starting position so far in a season that has been rather disappointing. The Brazilian newcomer Valdeno Brito (Konrad Motorsport Austria) also didn’t return from the first lap.

Finishing behind the former Porsche Junior Lance David Arnold, who used the start collision to catapult himself from twelfth to third place, his SPS Performance teammate Patrick Huisman saw the flag in fourth after a spectacular charge through the field. With this result, the Supercup record winner from the Netherlands moved back into third place overall in the points’ standings – a fitting gift on his 43rd birthday. Also driving for SPS Performance, Richard Williams from Great Britain received the flag in fifth place. Slovakia’s Stefan Rosina (Walter Lechner Racing School), who had also fallen back in the first lap due to the collision, fought his way through the field to finish sixth.

Drivers’ comments

René Rast (winner): “Four straight wins – I’m simply ecstatic. Again we did everything right. A huge thanks to my team. I got away well, but early on Jeroen was a little faster, I made some slight errors and once I didn’t get the right gear in correctly and he immediately pulled alongside me. I managed to regain my lead and go on to control the race successfully.”

Jeroen Bleekemolen (second): “That was a great race. After the start I was actually quicker than René but didn’t manage to overtake him. I didn’t want to go all out and risk everything. Taking the championship into account, I’m happy with second.”

Lance David Arnold (third): “Sometimes it’s just important to be in the right place at the right time. My start was fantastic because I still had a set of new tyres from qualifying. My team order was to attack in the first two laps and then wait to see how the race developed. Then suddenly the collision happened in front of me and I knew I had to use the chance. A great race.”

Fresh from the their court victory… yeah they haven’t been able to do much on track, Renault have decided to turn aggressive for the rest of the season. As if the driver was the only problem they had, Renault have decided to throw out Piquet. He will be replaced with Frenchman Grosjean.

Now as much he’s been the test driver and all, does this have to do something with no French driver on the starting grid post Bourdais’ exit from Toro Rosso. Whatever that may be, the fact is that this is classic Head-in-Sand behaviour. Yeah, the rookie did not perform! But you were too eager to put him in the car… expecting another Hamilton! And the car is not even close to what Lewis got!!!

So get real get the car in place and please be rest assured that Hungaroring was the exception for you guys! Don’t get used to leading the races! Definitely not thinking about winning them; for if you were to you will most probably be doing it with 3 wheels still attached!!!

Sportingbet have odds of 3.25 for MS to win a race this year. Sounds good, and any race odds of 3.25 is pretty tempting for MS but I’m not so sure the F60 is up to it. Not with the tracks left anyway, the only tracks the F60 has performed well have slow corners and not much overtaking (Hungary and Monaco) both of which Kimi finished on the podium. Then again you can never under-estimate a certain ‘M Schumacher’, can you?

Talmácsi Gábor élete egyik nagy álma teljesült, amikor a MOL segítségével júniusban a Scot Racing Honda 800 köbcentis motorjával első magyarként a MOTO GP királykategóriájában állhatott rajthoz.

Az érdeklődők számára a belépés a 8-as kapunál!

Ufficialmente scherza: “Schumy a Valencia?

Heikki Kovalainen – Inspiegabile.

Felipe Massa – Senza parole.

Time to break out the Goulash and Palinka and see who was the most worthy of a bad pun involving the

Time to break out the Goulash and Palinka and see who was the most worthy of a bad pun involving the word “Hungary”. Yes, it’s Driver Consistency time!

If you want more info on how I make these calculations, please refer to my post for the Spanish Grand Prix. I promise to write a proper post in the break about my calculation methods, by the way!

Anyway, here are the average lap times for all drivers during the Hungarian GP:

Note: As Massa did not start the race he is not included. Similarly for Sutil as he only managed one lap…

There are not too many changes in this graph to the actual finishing order, except to say that Trulli and Nakajima drop below Barrichello and Heidfeld. Alonso’s three-wheeler lap really increases his average by a significant amount.

Now we take out the lap times where pit stops were made. Note that I have removed Alonso’s laps after the pitstop and Vettel’s laps where the car started to break as these are not indicators of true performance. However, I have left Buemi’s slow laps in as he was stuck in traffic and then damaged his front wing, but did not make a pitstop to try and rectify the problem.

As always, I found out which laps the drivers pitted on with the help of the BlogF1 post on Pit stops and Tyre Strategies. Here is the graph with only racing laps considered:

What is interesting here is Alonso’s average speed being seventh fastest. Although he was on a lighter fuel load than the other cars around him, this means he could have been on for a points finish had he not had a problem in his first pitstop which caused his wheel to fall off. Vettel’s pace is way down in fifteenth which is very low for him – possibly due to problems he had in the first corner. The new Toro Rosso driver is half a second quicker than Buemi, which must worry him, traffic problems or not! Finally, Nakajima ends up thirteenth fastest which implies he must have had some good pitstops to stay ahead of the train and end up in ninth!

There we go then. An interesting and eventful weekend – I am pleased to say that at the time of writing, I am very pleased to tell you that Felipe Massa’s condition is improving very well. That was an horrific accident and hopefully one which will not be seen again for a while. It’s amazing how well the helmets protect the drivers these days. Also, Renault have been banned for the next race for what happened to Alonso. For me this is totally a knee-jerk reaction and an overly harsh penalty set without precedent. Word is that Renault could race in Valencia under appeal, but if they lose, the penalty could end up being harsher. I personally wonder if all this could be a way to get Alonso into Massa’s Ferrari seat…

So what did you guys think of the Hungarian Grand Prix? Do you think Massa will return to F1? Was the penalty given to Renault a fair one? Will Alonso move teams? Will anyone actually turn up to see the Valencia GP, given that the local contingent only care about Alonso? As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts…

I guess everybody has seen the video which shows how a spring from Rubens Barichello’s car hit

I guess everybody has seen the video which shows how a spring from Rubens Barichello’s car hit the head of the Ferrari driver Felipe Massa at Hungaroring in Hungary. He is now at the AEK Hospital (Honvéd) in Budapest which is a military hospital and it seems to be the best in the whole country at the moment. Last year my brother was there and when I visited him I was shocked by the spectacle. I mean when I last was at a hospital it was very spooky and I was scared to be operated so I just didn’t go back the next day. I don’t want to tell where it was because that would hurt the hospital’s reputation. But so AEK Hospital is the one that you see in USA tv-series, totally modern, everything arranged, everybody is caring and helpful.

Yesterday Péter Bazsó the medical director of AEK was present in a Hungarian morning talk show program Napkelte (Sunrise). Before that the program had a politician guest talking about the bad condition of Hungarian hospitals and generally the stringency of Hungarian health care. They were representing the current situation as a kind of triumph that even if we have so bad conditions we have at least one representative hospital. Péter Bazsó confirmed that the family of Felipe Massa and also his team was content with the Hungarian health care and they don’t want to take him to Paris as the gossips said. They will wait in Budapest the 10 days that must be expired till the recruitment of Massa, so he can leave the hospital.

I was really surprised when Péter Bazsó said that he feels a bit sad too because it’s only about that they are a quite new hospital (totally rebuilt 3 years ago) and that their ’spectacle’ is very nice which other, poorer hospitals don’t have so they don’t have the chance to show their professionality.

So… At least one has.

René Rast achieves hat-trick on the Hungaroring With his third win in succession, René Rast (Germany

René Rast achieves hat-trick on the Hungaroring

With his third win in succession, René Rast (Germany) underlined his title ambition in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. Driving the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by VELTINS MRS Racing, he secured a clear light to flag victory at the hot race on the Hungaroring on the outskirts of Budapest ahead of Jan Seyffarth (Germany) and points’ leader Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands) after starting from pole position and also turned the fastest race lap.

On the twisty Grand Prix circuit, the reigning Carrera Cup champion made an excellent start to hold onto his lead followed by guest start Jan Seyffarth (tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport) and Jeroen Bleekemolen (Konrad Motorsport). Trailing the trio, Slovakia’s Stefan Rosina (Walter Lechner Racing School) passed his teammate Damien Faulkner from Ireland after getting away well at the start to bring home fourth place. Rosina, who had secured second place from the race on the Nürburgring, attempted several times to overtake the stalwart title defender, Bleekemolen, but to no avail. Nevertheless, he moved up the points’ table into third place to now put pressure on Patrick Huisman (SPS Performance). The Supercup record winner from the Netherlands received a stop-and-go penalty after jumping the start and finished eleventh.

The surprise of the race was Supercup newcomer Siso Cunill. Driving for Konrad Motorsport, the Spaniard turned his strong drive in qualifying into his best performance to date in the series with sixth place. With this, he held much more experienced pilots at bay like the Austrian Norbert Siedler (VELTINS MRS Racing) and Jiri Janak (Konrad Motorsport) from the Czech Republic, who had to settle for seventh and eighth respectively.

Drivers comments

René Rast (winner): “I’m simply over the moon. Three pole positions, three wins – that is incredible, particularly because I haven’t tested at all this season and due to drive-shaft problems we only drove half the free practice. Jan was really strong in the first laps, but then I managed to pull away and bring victory home without too many problems.”

Jan Seyffarth (second): “At the beginning I was actually a bit faster than René, but I just couldn’t find a way past him. After the halfway point in the race I lost contact with him and then concentrated on Jeroen who was shadowing me and trying to overtake. But it’s really difficult to overtake on this circuit so I knew my second place was relatively safe.”

Jeroen Bleekemolen (third): “I was as fast as the drivers in front of me, but unlike Jan, who started as a guest and had nothing to lose, I was fighting for the championship. I had the Lechner boys trailing me and they were determined to get by, so my first priority was to keep them at distance. That’s not easy, so the strategy here is to get away well at the start and pull away – then you don’t have these problems.”

Race result – round 8 of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2009:

This was based on the precedent of the Vettels 3 wheel excursion in Australia… And the penalty then was a 50 Large US and hence should be the same.

FIA said Renault knew that one of wheels was not fastened properly but still let Alonso go… but Renault refuted by saying that this was only known half way into the next lap (once they say it flying off). Anyways this has ended and we will have one more ex-champion at Valencia driving a crappy car besides Hamilton.

And others present also said the only reason Spain has 2 races is for Alonso. People come to watch him race! That was acceptable 2 seasons back, but today seems kinda far-fetched. Not that they come to see him, but to see him RACE!!!
