After having a wonderful morning/midday with my love, I’m finally resting on thee couch and reaping the rewards; coconut water and some blogging. It was a beautiful Sunday with the perfect not too hot/not too cold weather. The howling winds finally ceased and I took every opportunity to make the most of this beautiful Northern California weather. We first went to go eat some brunch at a nearby cafe called Java Point Cafe. Situated along a street full of ma and pa shops, I love the fresh ingredients that they use. Not too mention that they also have a few filipino specials! (longanisa breakfasts..yum) I got the crab melt with pesto pasta while Daniel got a breakfast burrito with some fruits. I enjoyed the fresh crab meat that they used for their sandwich and was more than happy with the light yet tasty pesto pasta. After our meals, we walked off our foods at a nearby pier. Dogs were a splashin’ and we were just absorbing all the vitamin D that we could.

We then went to another waterfront to support the Bay Area Hunger Walk. I’ve only done one other walk before (Walk for Hemophilia) and I enjoyed it. We walked about two miles and I was super tired at the end. It was a wonderful walk supporting a great cause. It was a wonderful Sunday and a wonderful weekend to finally bask in the sun. Hope you all enjoyed your weekend as well!

No, not that.

On Saturday, Scott and I joined a group of other volunteers from the food pantry and participated in the 27th Annual Hunger Walk. The proceeds from this event benefited the Chicago Food Depository, which is where our pantry receives a large percentage of the foods that we in turn dole out to hungry residents in our own neighborhoods. This 5k began at 8:30am near Solider Field and luckily it was a beautiful morning for a long walk. Our route took us through a parking garage in McCormick Place (very random and not so nice) and then along the lake, which was very pretty and worth trudging through the depths of the parking garage. Sort of. Also, notice I said walk – I don’t run 5ks or anything else but even if I had wanted to, there were so many people there that running would’ve been just about impossible. According to the website there were 13,000 participants and I know that our local pantry received a certain amount of funds from every walker that we brought, so that’s awesome. The walk was packed but everyone was in good spirits as we were all doing it for a good cause. It was a little annoying that to begin, everyone had to pass under a small arch that wasn’t much bigger than a set of double doors – you can imagine how long it took thousands of men, women and strollers to get through there. We still managed to be finished with the walk in about an hour, which is about what I expected. It took twice as long to get there and back on the trains as it actually did to walk, but that’s okay. We were able to swing by a diner for brunch once we were finished and, after loading up on pancakes, hash browns and omelettes, enjoyed quite the nap later in the afternoon. Hey, we earned it!

The last time I did any sort of walk like this was probably back in high school, where we had annual 10 mile Walk-A-Thons to raise money for our school. They were basically an excuse to take the day off from class, walk a few hours then eat a bunch of pizza. I may or may not have spent a Walk-A-Thon or two a little hung over, so at least this time I was alert and sober. Relatively speaking.

Anyway, it’s hard to believe I’ve been helping out at the pantry for nearly three years. I’ve met some really great people and even added a new member to our book club through my network of pantry volunteers. I’m actually going there tonight so hopefully I’ll hear just how well we did during the 5k but since every little bit helps, I’m sure they’re happy!

I recently attended the Hunger Walk held in Berkeley on Sunday. It was a beautiful afternoon, perfect walking and lounging weather. I was there to take pictures for an upcoming article about the Hunger Walk in The Pioneer Newspaper. Be on the look out, hopefully some of my pictures will make it to print. The walk was fun and was a great opportunity to meet people involved in helping their local community. I also scored a free ice cream out of it, what more could you ask for on such a wonderful Sunday afternoon?

The subject of suffering has been covered by artists, writers, singers, and poets since the beginnin

The subject of suffering has been covered by artists, writers, singers, and poets since the beginning of time. The suffering I’m talking about is the basis of masterpiece, the breaker of hearts, and the mover of souls. I believe there is art in suffering, but it’s not the duty of the artist to merely say “look at this suffering”…I think it is equally the co-duty of an artist to help end suffering. To be genuine and truthful in one’s art, I believe the artist should have a meaningful experience in which they closely examine that particular ethos. The suffering of others is more graspable, more deconstructible and more serviceable than our own. As an artist I’m developing a growing hunger for “the transformative experience”. Ironically enough, I wasn’t prone to these overt desires to help others in my community until I (ta da!) left Catholicism. Maybe Jesus Christ, Ghandi, or St. Vincent will analogously tear out of me in an altruistic flurry of chaos – like the chestburster in Aliens - but in a good way. Call it the existential anxiety of a heretical believer, but whether or not these experiences reflect in my own art, the fact is that I’m getting anxious to partake in meaningful encounters that will benefit the less fortunate. As I view the world through the eyes I have now, I think a louder understanding of what matters begins to ring in my ears. Ecclesiastes 1:18 states it well: “For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.”

I recently took a step toward quelling this (oxymoronic) “selfish need” and I’m going to shamelessly plug it here. I signed up for The Greater Chicago Food Depository’s 26th Annual Hunger Walk in Chicago. It takes place on Saturday, June 25th, 2011. The Hunger Walk is an annual 5K (3.2 miles) event to raise funds and awareness for the Food Depository’s work in Cook County and network of 650 agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters). The Food Depository covers the overhead expenses for the event so all funds raised can be divided amongst the agencies to help supplement their budgets or, in some cases, serve as their entire annual budget. This is the largest one-day anti-hunger event in Chicago that brings together all of Cook County.

My fundraising goal is a modest $275 but since I’m kind of a newbie, I see this as the shallow end of the ”doing good” pool where I need to step in rather than dive in. So, if you read this and would like to do me (and the hungry others) a solid favor and donate to this great cause, you can do so here. And thank you = )

On Sunday, Carlo (my culture buddy) and I went to La Bonita to watch ‘The Nutcracker – Sweet Dreams, an African Twist’ a ballet performed by The Kampala Ballet and Modern Dance School. It was something else, I must say. There was this one girl, the main one in the ballet who gets the nutcracker that was an awesome dancer and who so reminded me of Carlo, she had her if about her.

Before that in the day, I had gone walking. I got there right on time and I hadn’t been sitting long when it was time to set off. I took a few pictures of the magnitude of people that were there but I can’t upload them coz I don’t have a data cable for my Nokia 6020. Anyway, I ran into a cousin of mine I hadn’t seen in ages, maybe 3 years and we did the walk together in exactly 1 hour. We were so proud of ourselves. For those of you not in the know, we walked from the Kololo Airstrip down through Wampewo Avenue to the Celtel building onto Jinja Road to Kampala Road up to the Sheraton then onto Ternan Avenue to Fairway hotel, Acacia Avenue, Upper Kololo back to the Airstrip which is about 8 Kilometres. My ass is still hurting, I mean of all the places to hurt, it’s going to be my ass.

Turns out I won’t be blogging as frequently, I was fired. I know, someone as awesome as me!? The guy I was working for thought the other chic I was working with was better suited for the job (it helped that she was white).

I WATCHED SPIDERMAN 3 and loved it. I loved every single bit of it, the make up, the costumes, the plot, the villains, honestly, what wasn’t to like? I can’t wait for Pirates of the Carribean 3.

See you all at the new inproved BHH, can’t wait for it. Ciao.
