It is Lee’s and my 22nd Thanksgiving together and our 12th with Darwin- I could not imagine more to be thankful for. It may seem hackneyed to the cynical to annually list what we are thankful for and it may seem redundant since, for many of us, that list doesn’t dramatically differ from year to year. Regardless we are obligated to take stock of our blessings because we need to ponder the importance of our good fortune and to contemplate the poverty in our own backyard.

For most Americans Thanksgiving is the quintessential American holiday and evokes universal images: family, food, prayerful thanks for the blessings we have received throughout the year. Yet, these images of American bounty run counter to a growing reality; some 49 million Americans face food insecurity. Of that number, some 17 million are children, which means that half of all American children will need to use federal food stamps at some point in their lifetime and of that a staggering 90 percent of African American children will rely on foodstamps during their lifetimes.

For most Americans hunger in the developing world – Africa, Asia – is a familiar sight. Today some 13 million Ethiopians in the Horn of Africa rely on food relief, as do approximately 2.8 million people in the Southern African nation of Zimbabwe. While pictures of hunger in Africa are pervasive throughout the United States – and a constant feature in the fundraising appeals of the international charity industry – for most people in the U.S., the idea that 49 million Americans suffer from food insecurity seems unthinkable.

The hard fact that hunger and access to nutritious food is as critical for 1 in 6 Americans as it is for 1 in 4 Zimbabweans certainly diminishes the distance between us all. So, as we look around this Thanksgiving the face of hunger can be our friends, our neighbors, our extended family — here or in Africa — and for some, our own.

In our nation 39.8 million people, 13.2 percent of the total U.S. population, live in poverty and one out of five children in the United States live in poverty. The racial disparities for poverty are striking. Poverty rates for white Americans are 8.6%, for blacks it is nearly 25%, Hispanics 23% and Asians 11%.

One out of three Americans under 65 were without health insurance at some point during 2007 and 2008 according to a study commissioned by the consumer health advocacy group Families USA. It found 86.7 million Americans were uninsured at one point during the past two years. At any one time, there are approximately 46 million Americans without healthcare coverage leaving millions one illness away from homelessness.

Those of us who have the good fortune to sit down to a good meal today should not feel guilty about it, but we should remember that many Americans do not share that good fortune. Many of us complain about our taxes, our credit card interest rates but we should put that in context.

As a nation we have a shared responsibility to one another. We have a sacred obligation as a civilized people to lift up those in pain and to help those in need. As a wealthy nation we should strive to eliminate poverty and hunger in our nation. We should not have any family or any children living without a roof over their heads every night and we should all have the right to healthcare. We should have an educated nation where illiteracy is eradicated. If the price of that be higher taxes – so be it. Part of the gift of being human is the ability to be compassionate and to act on that compassion.

I know I am exceptionally fortunate. I have a comfortable home, I have a partner who I love and adore and who is my best friend, I have a sweet dog who lies by my side no matter what I have done and who is my constant companion. I am blessed with good friends and many people who love me and who I love. I am privileged to advocate on issues I care about and have the honor to be, in a very small way, a part of efforts that help the least fortunate among us.

2009 has had its challenges for us. In addition to my battles with AIDS and Hepatitis C, Lee now is battling with prostate cancer. Like everyone, our finances are tight and we have cut back. But we know that millions of Americans struggle every day to make it to the next often without dignity and little acknowledgement. As we give thanks for our blessings, we should remember our obligations to all those in need and that those obligations do not disappear on the fourth Friday of November or on the 26th of December.

Weight increase-whether it is due to genes is under active study.People ,who despite eating heavily

Weight increase-whether it is due to genes is under active study.People ,who despite eating heavily remain slim, whereas who eat less gain weight.Reasons are yet to be established.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Exercise seems to simultaneously make people hungrier, yet more readily satisfied by a meal — and differences in these responses from person to person may help explain why some exercisers shed pounds more easily than others, researchers say.

In a study of 58 overweight and obese adults who started an exercise regimen, researchers found that exercise tended to boost participants’ hunger before a meal, compared with their sedentary days.

On the other hand, they were also more easily satisfied by their morning meal than they had been before becoming active.

But while both effects were generally at work across the study group, there were subtler differences between participants who were more successful in their weight loss and those whose extra pounds stubbornly hung on.

In general, exercisers who did not meet their expected weight loss were both hungrier after fasting — that is, right before breakfast — and throughout the day, compared with their hunger ratings at the study’s start.

In contrast, those who were more successful in shedding pounds generally saw their pre-breakfast appetites increase after becoming active. But they were not hungrier throughout the day.

“The reason that some people are more successful (at weight loss) could be due to a lesser increase in appetite and the prevention of an increase in food intake,” lead researcher Dr. Neil King, an associate professor at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, told Reuters Health in an email.

But the bottom line for new exercisers, he said, is that they should not throw in the towel if they start feeling more hungry than normal — or fail to shed as many pounds as they’d been hoping.

Other research shows that exercise has health benefits — like improved cardiovascular fitness, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol — even if weight loss is modest.

For the current study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, King’s team had 58 overweight men and women go through a 12-week supervised exercise regimen designed to burn 500 calories per session.

At the beginning and end of the study, participants were given a breakfast of cereal and toast, and were asked to rate their hunger before the meal, immediately after and throughout the rest of the day.

After 12 weeks, 32 participants had lost the expected amount of weight based on the calories they burned during exercise; 26 had not. On average, both groups showed a revved up appetite before breakfast on week 12, but daily hunger was greater in those who had not lost a substantial amount of weight.

Both groups of exercisers, though, seemed to be more readily satisfied by their breakfast than they had been before becoming active.
Story:
It’s not clear why these two different appetite effects arise from exercise. But physical activity, while spurring hunger, may also boost the sensitivity of the body’s fullness-signaling system, according to King’s team.

“The key messages,” King said, “are exercise is good for you, don’t expect unrealistic weight loss and don’t give up exercising just because of lower-than-expected weight loss.”

I am looking forward to a potluck Thanksgiving dinner we are hosting later today for some expats here with no place better to be. In the time-honored tradition of reflecting on the things for which I am grateful, I will take a moment before we break bread to meditate on the thousands of smallholder farmers around me who haven’t got enough to eat today. And aren’t too sure about tomorrow.

Not to get all Biblical on you, but I want to share a thanks-giving reflection from a spiritual retreat I went on many years ago in the Dominican Republic that has really stuck with me. I was part of a group filled with folks who had never experienced the poverty of a “less-developed country,” and we were mediating on the parable of the rich man who won’t leave his house because Lazarus the poor man is begging at the gate. The person leading the reflection suggested that in his anxiety, the rich man failed to see that Lazarus was the gate — to happiness, enlightenment, fulfillment, salvation, etc. The facilitator was preparing us for our visit to a batey where Haitian migrant sugar workers lived, and told us we would encounter miserable, wrenching poverty. But he urged us not to give thanks that we were not poor. Rather, he said, give thanks for the fact that you have the opportunity to encounter poverty. And to stand with the poor. And work together with them to address the causes of their poverty. Thanks-giving has never quite been the same for me ever since.

(For the record, we also picked coffee in a little town called El Cadillo, and had a powerful and reverent reflection on the miracle of coffee.)

i don’t understand existers.

you know, people who exist. who go thru the motions. have a job, maybe have a family, have some kind of church life (or not) but that’s it. no huge hunger for more – meaning of life – changing the world – world domination (in my case, for Jesus) – adding to someone, or some community’s life or meaning.

it’s like they don’t even care. How do you not even care? is it even possible.

Live. Thrive. Dominate. Excel. Dream. Hunger. Dare. Vibe.

but exist? i really don’t get it.

and there are a LOT of them.

and once more it comes back to my faith and my belief and lifestyle cos Jesus said “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full.” – how can that not be attractive?

i understand christians have gotten it wrong (a lot) and churches have messed up (a lot) and there have been some shocking role models or anti-models and a LOT of bad has happened in the name of religion. but the heart and essence of it – the life i have chosen to follow – is life to the full – abundant life – love God, love people – reach out to those in need.

Please don’t exist. PLEASE! Flee from existing. Run from mediocre. From settling. From the rut. From survival.

Choose life. And live it to the full.

Full, or fool?

Sitting here surrounded by our parents and Christy’s grandmother, in our beautiful home counting down the hours til we dig into the Low Country Boil waiting patiently in the refrigerator, I cannot help but to feel overwhelmingly blessed and thankful for all that God has given me in this life. A beautiful, godly woman as my wife that I get to chase God with. Parents that are still with me on this earth and in good health. A brother that is on his way to finding recovery and meaning in his life. A few good friends that I can count on. A beautiful, Southern Belle of a city surrounded by breathtaking stretches of beach, rivers and marshes in which to live. My health. A career in which I get to make a true difference in people’s lives. A Holy Spirit-led church that still believes in the real power of Christ and is a light unto its community to belong too. A small role in a missions ministry that reaches the lost and hurting of Brazil – Gospel for Brazil.

I could go on and on listing the things that I am thankful for on this Thanksgiving holiday but they’re all nothing compared to the one thing that I am most thankful for in this life….my relationship with Jesus Christ! Because of the sacrificial blood that he shed on a cross so many years ago, I have been rescued from hell and born again as a child of the Risen Lord. He redeemed me. He forgave me. He healed my spirit and filled it with His Holy Spirit, giving me a joy and peace that is no longer dependent on the things of this world. He gave me purpose and direction, and the power and authority to reach the lost, heal the sick and deliver the oppressed. So as I sit here writing this post, I wonder what else I could ever need in this lifetime!?! Nothing! For Jesus is enough….He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

To all my family, friends and passers-by to the site – Happy Thanksgiving!!!! May you have a blessed day with the people you care most about, and I hope you remember your true blessings with humble thankfulness. And for those that do not know Jesus as Lord and Savior, may this be the day that your greatest thanksgiving comes to life….a relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

By Danielle Smith For Thanksgiving 2009 First, some definitions of food security, which seem very ba

By Danielle Smith
For Thanksgiving 2009

First, some definitions of food security, which seem very basic–my own is–when I am hungry, I must always have fresh water, and nutritious, balanced diet, food on hand, on demand, and in my possession to prepare, cook, and serve–and having the propane, stove, and cookware utensils to do it with–without having to depend on soup kitchens 7-days a week; especially in the winter season, if I am sick, during extreme weather, or if I lack transportation. Any thing less than that, automatically becomes food insecurity.

The USDA definition of food security is:

“Access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food security includes at a minimum: (1) the ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, and (2) an assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (e.g., without resorting to emergency food supplies, scavenging, stealing, or other coping strategies).”

Food insecurity: “Limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.”

Hunger: “The uneasy or painful sensation caused by a lack of access to food. Hunger may produce malnutrition over time…Hunger…is a potential, although not necessary, consequence of food insecurity.”

That was and still is my minimum requirement for survival; difficult to maintain, easier done in a motor-home than from a tent in the wetlands, yet for others it was not possible to even come close to that goal, as it more or less related to stability at one’s campsite; whether your camp equipment was stolen by other homeless predators, or stolen by enforcement predators, in the name of “public sanitation”.

Notice that the government seems to suggest that, along with “scavenging” (in dumpsters), or stealing, “resorting to emergency food supplies” is not socially acceptable, either! Except for stealing, I have rummaged through dumpsters, and I have found some really good food and other usable items, at times, near the University of Oregon! But this is why recycling, or giving leftovers to to poor is better, in my opinion because dumpster diving is hard, dirty work. To hell with the socially acceptable, baloney! Hunger will motivate you, in ways you did not know you could act.

In my definition, I simply meant I did not wish to “depend” on soup kitchens, or food boxes, although I certainly did depend on them, and still do occasionally. No one should feel, or ever be made to feel, so strongly against taking a hand-out from charity, or government food assistance in food stamps that they, or their families, ever go hungry! That is just plain foolish pride! It is difficult enough for some new people who experience unemployment; or homelessness, and hunger due to what the USDA referrers to as “financial resource constraint” , to bring them to join the lines for food, around our community.

As homeless people get older, or become disabled and camp sweeps become bolder, it becomes more of a challenge to store, or carry belongings, and then travel to every food location serving hot meals daily, and it therefore becomes a guaranteed risk to the overall security of that person’s possessions left behind at camp that may very well be stolen, or confiscated, should he or she leave to go eat.

Another thing–as a life-long registered voter, I will never forget that it was every one of you Republican S.O.B.’S who tried to starve myself, and all the poor here in Oregon, when they drastically cut food stamps several years ago, as a part of welfare reform war.

You are the vipers that must be forever, defeated in every way into extinction; as being a murderous, hate-filled, bunch of psychopaths capable and ready again, should you ever come into power, to remove our rights, to use starvation against us because of our food insecurity, and the dire shortages of donations from faith based organizations, that you will have caused by dragging down the economy, while blaming us for it all.

I will never forget–and neither should any one else–that it was the Democrat for whom the majority of us voted, President Barack Obama, who greatly increased the food stamp benefits, right from the start of his election into office; and therefore put more food in our stomach, on a consistent basis for an entire month. Before he did that, I did not experience a sufficient degree of food security, or even enough of what I needed for the entire month; which left me hungry towards the ending weeks, and then after grocery food shopping, or getting a food box, I then had problems keeping myself from binges of overeating !

The links below, are a perfect example of how most of you ungrateful, selfish, un-American, complaining, conservative Republicans would like to care for America’s homeless:

homelessness.change.org/blog/view/phoenix_church_ordered_to_stop_feeding_the_homeless

A Statement From Orlando Food Not Bombs On The Arrest of Eric Montanez:

Feeding Intolerance: Prohibitions On Sharing Food With People Experiencing Homelessness, A Report By The National Law Center For Homelessness & Poverty:

www.nationalhomeless.org/publications/foodsharing/Food_Sharing.pdf

The sad truth is that a number of you right here in Eugene do, in your ignorance and your contempt-poisoned arrogance, favor denying food to the poor here, and do believe and preach, that it would discourage the homeless from living here. That is wishful thinking by stupid thinkers blinded by hate, with hearts hardened by greed, and posted in cowardice, anonymously, in our local news web forums.

Read it with your own eyes; follow this link below to comments on KVAL TV, about “downtown solutions” to homelessness–notice they switched to the use of the pejorative term, “transients”. Also realize that the homeless problem ranges well beyond downtown area. The homeless are not supposed to be visible anywhere, not just downtown, but anywhere within the city limit.

downtowneugene.kval.com/content/downtown-solutions-forum-transients-and-panhandlers

Those of you who would use food denial as a weapon–shame on you, Eugene’s homeless-hating, gang of thugs! So many of you it seems, are addicted to punishment and just driven to insanity to promote criminalization, jail and exclusion, as the only fitting solution to rid yourselves of the civic responsibility to help others less fortunate, who are suffering, or who would otherwise be forced to suffer, if you had your wicked way.

Well, I can say with pride, that we can all give thanks on this Day of Thanksgiving 2009, that here in Eugene, and throughout Lane County, such foul and–no pun intended–disgusting food fights do not happen here, they are just not allowed by the vast majority of its citizens, and thank God for that! The ugly, resentful, food denying mentality of a very few, becomes lost and ignored, in the seasonal cornucopia of tons of total food shipments.

Our food donations do fluctuate up and down, and we have our full times and empty ones, but generally, food boxes are always available every few days, and few if any poor or homeless that I know of, die from starvation, but some must I am sure, experience hunger on a regular basis, due to disruptions in daily living, which makes them more susceptible to the cold winter weather. Proper hydration, having a steady source of fresh drinking water is equally important to health and combating hunger, and can be a problem for displaced homeless persons.

It is true, that citizens of Eugene, are those who eagerly arrest anyone who abuses or neglects horses, dogs, cats, etc., but refuses to do the same to those responsible for the abuse and neglect of its real human citizens, shelter needs.

But the homeless are still blessed to live here, because food is plentiful, and leftovers are processed and frozen, and food is collected by mail carriers, and good, leftover food should not be wasted, it is believed, rather it should be recycled, not simply thrown into a locked dumpster to rot, in the faces of the hungry homeless, living on the streets!

We have a wonderful, organized, multi-agency food bank system, here in Lane County, and a thriving farmers market, and growers market, supplied by dozens of local, family farms; and many grocers and bakeries that provide day old breads, etc, community gardens, several church kitchens, the Eugene Mission, and some very generous, anonymous donors.

The only question then becomes, can all of the hungry homeless people get to this food and make use of it, at least two or three times each and every day?

In addition, the whole community joyfully, and with much advertised, in-depth, media news reports, annually atones for their willful neglect of the needy exposed to year round weather, with a hearty, delicious, Thanksgiving turkey dinner and clothing giveaway, that serves well over 2,500 low income and homeless singles, and families with children around the city area; it is lovingly organized, prepared, and served, by an army of dozens of dedicated volunteers, in cooperation with the Culinary Arts School students, of Lane Community College, each and every year.

It is a huge feast, that serves many in one day, and is worth the waiting in line; everyone gets a number to keep order; and for having the donations of gloves, socks, hats, blankets, sleeping bags, and other winter necessities that are passed out, along with hot coffee, hot soup, snacks, delivered while waiting for dinner.

Bon-apatite, and Happy Thanksgiving! I myself usually attend this dinner and will do so again, this Thursday!

The false deification of law as justification for laws against vagrancy borne of poverty by Anatole France’s oft-repeated quote has become as repugnant, outdated, untrue, and irrelevant as the quote itself–for one thing, no one needs to steal a loaf of bread here, not even while living under a bridge!

In spite of our shameful, majestically secular humanist laws that seek to forbid only the poor and homeless from sleeping or being in places not meant for human habitation, for it is only they, (not the well-off) who cannot afford to rent or buy a nightly room, or any place meant for human habitation, the homeless will act to the contrary of the public, as the lesser choice of evils.

Homeless humans, will act according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and no selfish, self-serving, man-made law but the natural creators law of the human individual’s will to survive, shall ever prevail, fulfilling the need for water, food, shelter, and sleep!

To be punished for doing what is every homeless persons rightful, willful duty to meet these needs, is cruel; is to be personally assaulted and violated with the most condemning social, civil decree or curse to suffering, sickness, and eventual death. Is this the intended consequence? An end to homelessness by attrition? One who is caught in such a position over time, can not help but believe that this is true.

No self-respecting homeless citizen with a backbone, who lives here in Lane County should have to take this abuse of corporate authority, or the confiscation of personal property such as food or the means by which to use it, or by impounding the vehicle which contains it, without seeking immediate legal assistance, and demanding due process in court, for the swift return of all necessity items taken if any, according to State ORS law, and specifically:

H.B. 2482, “Relating To The Removal of Homeless Individuals from Camping Sites on Public

Property”

that requires storing said items for a minimum of 30 days, if they bother keeping them at all, for the owner to retrieve.

The State of Oregon should be pressed to make it an equal crime of “fraud, waste, and abuse” of any, and all AFS food stamp purchased food items, that are wrongfully taken (confiscated), or disposed of, from their rightful, purchaser/owners, in the 24 hour enforcements of illegal camping ordinances by any local, county, or state authority, which leaves the homeless person suddenly, without a place for the self-sufficiency of a personal food supply, as well as the utilities and cooking equipment to prepare and heat it. The 24-hour deadline should, it is strongly recommended by the ACLU, be increased to at least 48 to 72 hours, if no other violations are found.

The State of Oregon should also be pressed to immediately place its homeless residents (citizens) under the very same kind of ombudsman system of rights that state residents of nursing facilities have, to outlaw at the state level, homeless harassment, abuse, neglect, exposure to extreme weather due to sudden enforcement, forced isolation, sleep deprivation, or forced hunger, due to constant disruption, or relocation in relationship to sources of food and water.

The City of Eugene promotes food security for its housed citizens. How even more shameful it seems, when the City and the Mayor has some time ago, released a statement in support of, and responsibility to advise its housed citizens, and families to keep an emergency supply of blankets, water, food, cooking utensils, fuel, first aid supplies, medication, etc., on hand in the event of a disaster.

What gall! What hypocrisy and insensitivity towards the homeless! I do hope this was was an innocent oversight, because our mayor should have then and there, thought to herself, “What do I tell the homeless, who have little or nothing on hand, no safe place to keep stuff, or recently had their car, van, or motor-home with all their cooking utensils, and food inside, towed away–quite possibly from Eugene to Springfield, for illegal camping?”

Looking through the eyes of many homeless who live from campsite to campsite, food box to food box, from dinner line, to dinner line, what do you tell them? Be sure to have your emergency supply ready in your closets, too?

No, it’s more like–oh, here’s a list of all of our services, and a couple of useless phone numbers as far as shelter for tonight goes–but just go to the Mission, just go eat here at this church, or go there to get food boxes. How can any one not see that this is not food security for the homeless, but food insecurity! That is the unfortunate, police policy (pathological policy) we have here; a real rotten situation for many of our local homeless, who cannot make themselves invisible enough.

Food is vital to an outdoor living, homeless person, because it takes food to generate heat to maintain core body temperatures to prevent hypothermia, and to prevent overheating from heat exhaustion. But cold temperatures, getting clothing soaked by rain or snow storms makes food gathering very hard, keeping warm becomes a priority. Here is what an internet survival guide says about the importance of shelter:

“In some areas, your need for shelter may take precedence over your need for food and possibly even your need for water. For example, prolonged exposure to cold can cause excessive fatigue and weakness (exhaustion). An exhausted person may develop a “passive” outlook, thereby losing the will to survive.”

www.wilderness-survival.net/chp5.php

And of the importance of daily intake of food, otherwise the following symptoms begin to set upon one who lacks food:

“Irritability, low moral, lethargy, physical weakness, confusion, disorientation, poor judgment, weakened immune system, inability to maintain body temperature which can lead to hypothermia, heat exhaustion or even heat stroke.”

www.survivaltopics.com/survival/how-long-can-you-live-without-food/

But what about the future of our food security?

Our dependence on cheap oil and a steady dollar, means that future food security for us all, is just an illusion, and this truth will soon become evident when, not if, the US dollar collapses, or is replaced by another currency, and food quickly, as in overnight, disappears from supermarket shelves, as the wealthy begin to hoard food by the truck load, while what is left on the shelves will be unaffordable to the poor to buy, with their worthless dollars. None of us can predict the utter chaos this will have on our local economy and community. It will drastically affect priorities as to who, where, and how food will be acquired, and who shall receive the food, when, where, how much, or how often.

Emergency food storage is and should be, the concern of every state, including Oregon. The recent banning of Willamette Valley’s grass seed farmers from future burning of their fields, has many of those farmers turning to wheat. The article below discusses the problems of storage of that wheat, and how lucky we may be to have such a problem of too much wheat, if we can only put it to good use, by storing it, and having it on hand for the citizens.
The sculptures were created for a fundraiser (though I can’t remember for which organization) to raise hunger awareness in the community. There were Munny dolls, melting ice cream cones, pumpkins, and even a Wild Thing or two. (No, not Tone Loc… though that would have been awesome.)

As we in America celebrate Thanksgiving, and all the great freedoms, advancements, and benefits that the exporting of Christianity to this land brought with it, let us not forget about those millions of other people who are trapped in the bondage of their nations who are held captive to false religions and the human wreckage that those false religions bring.

Becoming Last had a post containing some pictures which reminded me exactly how thankful we should be, and exactly how starkly different the continent of North America may have turned out had the light of Christianity not pierced the darkness that covered this land.

The pictures in the post came from a piece in the Sacramento Bee. I’ve included some of these sobering but needful reminders below.

Och tillsist då;

Thanksgiving is upon us… marking the beginning of another holiday season. The holidays are a great opportunity for sharing love and being with friends and family… It is a time of happiness and reflection. Memories and tradition…

So here we are this year, on the brink of holiday frenzy and abundance… please remember there are those who have little to nothing to be thankful for… there are those who simply are… So now I ask all my friends and family to simply Be… Remember charity and lend a helping hand to your neighbor… simply ask and listen for we are all in need of something…

Yesterday the Tacoma Rescue Mission announced that they were 2,000 turkeys short of what they needed to feed the hungry at Thanksgiving. Can you afford to donate a turkey to a local rescue mission?

Contact a local church and offer to donate a turkey or, depending on your abundance, the ingredients for a Thanksgiving dinner for a family in need (or a write a check, give a grocery store gift card, or restaurant gift certificate to cover the family for Thanksgiving dinner).

Invite someone you know, who is struggling financially, to have Thanksgiving dinner with your family.

Call a local food bank and find out what they need. Match it up with what you can afford – or what you may already have on hand to give - and make a quick drop off while you’re out and about doing your other chores.

God bless you this Thanksgiving. Whatever your circumstance, God loves you, and for that we can each be truly thankful.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day, and I already know I will eat too much. I always do, because I love everything on the Thanksgiving table. The foods both bring back lots of great memories of holidays past and celebrate today’s new friends.

Last week, our church had a speaker on hunger, especially hunger in our own state. Afterwards, our children and adults put together boxes of food to take to some local families and individuals who are in need this year.

As you give thanks tomorrow, I hope you will have a very long list of all the people and things, tangible and intangible, with which you have been blessed. You may be blessed with an abundance of energy, time, faith, prayers, money, or other gifts.

I also hope that this Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season, you will find a few moments to meditate on your own abundance, and then seek to find ways to share out of that abundance.

Yesterday I was listening to a Christian radio station that was doing a fundraising campaign for gos

Yesterday I was listening to a Christian radio station that was doing a fundraising campaign for gospel missions around the country. They were challenging all of their listeners to “Give where you live” in order to support a local rescue mission in your town so they can supply the homeless with a Thanksgiving dinner. I love that they do this every year, AND I love the testimonies of the people who have been helped through this campaign in the past. I was sobbing listening to story after story of how missions had not only provided food and shelter for people who were facing hard times…but how they also saved peoples lives through God’s powerful spirit of love and grace.

I’ve talked before about how hard it has been to be on the receiving end of help for the past year. God has humbled me in places I didn’t even know I had, and I am better for it. To be honest…before we were pushed head first into the most trying season of our lives, in some twisted way, giving and helping the needy gave me a small sense of superiority. (OK I know that’s disgusting, but I’m just being honest.)

I have never had to go hungry, in fact the 20 extra pounds that ride passenger on my butt everyday are examples of just the opposite. I’ve always had a roof over my head and my children have always been safe and provided for. Praise Jesus! While I can’t identify with hunger pains and truly loosing everything…I can relate to feeling helpless in circumstances that are beyond my control. Have you ever judged people that have obviously been through the system – who may or may not work hard for a living – who may or may not be on welfare – who may or may not have many children with different fathers? A couple of months ago I was in a waiting room surrounded by people from all walks of life. I desperately wanted to scream “I don’t belong here!! I am not like these people!” But instead I had to fight back the tears as I heard God tell me, “Lindsay, you are no better than anyone in this room…I love them all…they are all mine.” I begged God for forgiveness and I have to say, I haven’t been the same since.

Yesterday on the radio one lady in particular stood out. She talked about how a couple of years ago she had been the recipient of a food basket from Hope for the Hungry. She explained how hard it was to not be able to afford to put meet in her freezer for her family and then how overwhelming it was to receive a huge basket of much needed food for Thanksgiving. Now, she has shared her testimony with her church and she was helping others in her community by handing out food baskets last night. She went on to say how everything she has is because of God and everything she is for His glory. (Her words were so much more beautiful and impacting.) As they wrapped up her segment the DJ’s came back with, “Well you can’t out give God.” Ahhhhh! I don’t even know what that means and I think we can all agree that corny Christian cliché’s are so last year!! Anyway, I will no longer look at the “needy” in judgement or with pity or as a charity cases … but I will identify with their hurts and fears with love and respect.

Thank you God for giving me perspective.
