We finish our tour of the Great Northwest in the Evergreen State.

Only two guys from Washingto are in the Hall of Fame – Ryne Sandberg and Earl Averill. Sandberg is of course a modern player, and there has been a lot of talk about Ron Santo getting into the Hall. It seems unlikely at this point, as there have been several votes on the matter and he hasn’t come particularly close, however deserving he is.

I’m going to focus on the Earl of Snohomish. Averill was part of the Indians’ great history of center fielders, roaming the “pasture” for the 1930s. He didn’t get to the majors until he was 27, so he began quickly, becoming the first American Leaguer to hit a home run in his first time at the plate.

Averill was picked for the first six All-Star games and hit .318 for his career. At the end of it, he went to the Tigers, who beat out the Indians for the pennant in 1940 and he got to play in a World Series. Then he returned to Snohomish and awaited his Hall selection, which finally happened in 1975.

One thing that jumps out about the Evergreens is that you have two guys named Ron who played a pretty good third base – Santo and Cey. Santo will probably play third so what do you do with Cey? His only other position (one game) was first base, but John Olerud and a lot of other guys are there. Sandberg’s at second and Kevin Stocker is at shortstop. Could Santo play shortstop? Possibly. More likely, Cey will be the top pinch hitter.

Joining Averill in the outfield could be the current member of that Cleveland center field club, Grady Sizemore, and perhaps Bill North or Geoff Jenkins. Or maybe Santo goes there. It’s hard to imagine Cey running in the outfield. Red Sox 1950s All-Star Sammy White is behind the plate.

The staff lacks a long-career ace, but not for long. Vean Gregg had a great rookie year for Cleveland in 1911, but never hit those heights again. Bruce Kison had a solid career for the Pirates though he was never really a star either. That brings us to the twosome of Tim Lincecum and Jon Lester. If they continue to pitch as they have so far, the Evergreens will have a pair of aces in pretty short order.

Another pitcher, Fred Hutchinson, will manage the Evergreens. Hutchinson was almost good enough to make the club, but he really made his mark in the dugout. Just 32 when he managed for the first time in Detroit, he went on to St. Louis, just missing a pennant in 1957, and then Cincinnati where he did win the flag in 1961 with the surprising Reds. The Reds just missed in 1962 and were in the chase in 1964 when Hutch could no longer continue. Just 45, he was ravaged by lung cancer. He missed the last two months and the Reds, trying to win it for their manager, finished a game out in the wild NL race.

About a month later, Hutchinson died. But his legacy lives on in Seattle, where his brother started the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. One of the persons treated there was Jon Lester, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2006 and recovered well enough to become the Red Sox ace. He won the Hutch Award in 2008, given by baseball to one person each year to reward a “fighting spirit” … which was, by all accounts, what Fred Hutchinson was.

Economic Times’ Brand Equity has published the list of India’s Most Trusted Brands Survey findings today.
The top ten brands are

1. Nokia

10. Vicks

This year, Nokia displaced Colgate to gain the top slot. Nokia is riding on the explosive telecom growth that India is now witnessing. The focus on quality and features has made Nokia a brand that Indian consumers love. The brand was able to bring in successful models regularly. Currently the N series has been the poster boy in its portfolio. Along with the models, the brand also has been investing in building the brand equity. The result of the survey also throws an interesting lesson. Recently Nokia faced the issue of ” overheating of battery”. Around 46 mn BL-5C series batteries was recalled by Nokia worldwide . Marketers feared that this recall will have a negative impact on Nokia’s brand equity. But this survey proved that Indian consumers have been impressed by the commitment of Nokia in the Indian market.

The current results has been a disappointment for Colgate which topped the list for the past 4 years. But I feel that the brand lost the position not because of any loss of trust but because the mobile telecom category have seen a huge growth and was the top- of -the- mind category for consumers. Colgate still leads the toothpaste category but will have a reason to worry because Pepsodent has moved to the No.4 slot from the No.8 slot.

FOR FIVE MONTHS, I’ve been scouring local yard sales and thrift shops for something that would serve as a pantry/additional storage in my Springs, Long Island, cottage kitchen.

I was thinking maybe I’d find a 1920s Hoosier cabinet, or something more modern that I could paint up and be done with it. I knew I wanted closed storage on top and bottom, with an open area in the middle that would be a handy ’staging area’ for keys, mail, radio, etc., and could be used as a bar or buffet for entertaining.

But nothing had turned up in all this time…until last Saturday. As usual, I bought the East Hampton Star, and one of the yard sale classifieds advertised a “rustic, handmade hutch.” I made a beeline for that sale, and was there before 9 in the morning.

The hutch, located in the basement woodshop of Leo Snyder, a longtime local resident, is a beaut. It even comes with a legend: it’s made of old barn wood from an 18th century barn in East Hampton that was demolished in the 1970s. Leo took some of the old pine, which certainly looks like it could be 300 years old, richly colored and gnarly, and made this seven-foot-tall cabinet, with leather hinges and handles. He and his wife used it for over 30 years, and now, even though he said it was like “parting with a family member,” they were ready to say goodbye to it.

I paid $500 for it, gladly. Leo and his son-in-law delivered it yesterday, and it absolutely makes my kitchen — elevates the whole house, as a matter of fact.

When we bought our manufactured home, it came complete with a ‘built in’ entertainment unit, occupied by a 45 inch HD projection television.

Yeah, this was a cool feature. Part of an “upgraded package”. What we didn’t consider, and apparently neither did the manufacturer, was that projection televisions were ‘on their way out’, as sleeker and more streamlined models have become popular. So when the television ‘popped’ one day, after less than 3 years of service and the picture was gone, parts to repair it not in existence, we were left with a huge gaping boxed in hole in the wall.

We put a small portable television stand in the opening and rigged a curtain across the bottom half of the opening to conceal the stand. Well that looked more than a little ‘odd’ and tacky, so we talked about what we could do to ‘finish’ the opening and make it appear to be an entertainment ‘hutch’.

Some finished shelving and some wood paneling did the trick. This is the result:

I think my idea for shelves my husband’s idea for materials and his know-how came together well to produce a really nice looking entertainment hutch that looks like it was meant to be the way it is now.

He was able to match the paneling on the inside sides and bottom of the opening with paneling he installed on the back wall of the opening and he made a great hidden compartment for the cables and wires.

Behind the shelves between the shelving and the actual back of the opening is a gap about 6 inches deep that reaches from the top of the top shelf to the bottom of the opening where all the cables and wires are hidden and the outlet that was built into the unit is located.

I think he did a great job of disguising the opening and making it look as if it was always finished.

1 Rafter Pole Up

My job was to take long slender poles, cut a month earlier, limb them and chop to size. 46 of them. I got 1/4 done Friday, another 1/4 done Saturday, and the final 1/2 on Sunday. Hubby then took the poles and tacked them as rafters for the roof, spacing 1 foot apart.
