If ever there was proof needed that the people of Speakers Corner are dedicated (or crazy and obsessed) you would only have to look at today. Despite freezing temperatures and really heavy showers three Speakers dutifully turned out to entertain the crowds.

Well I say crowds, but to be honest there were only about 15 people there and they weren’t all that enthusiastic! Most seemed to see how quiet it was and give up only staying for a few minutes. Even one of the speakers who was there couldn’t be bothered and just sat there on his stool in the rain. Bit crazy if you ask me!

But despite the wind and rain, and the lack of much of a crowd one of the Speakers was going full force. He wasn’t one i’ve heard before, but his message wasn’t that uncommon. He was talking about the most common topic in the Corner, religion. He was obviously a proponent of a particular type of Christianity. But my description isn’t brilliant so why don’t you listen to the two audio clips i’ve posted to get a better idea. I have to say I think even the most religious people will disagree with this guys wide definition of what qualifies as murder!

Christmassy: I never thought it was a real word until now. The English started decorating for Christ

Christmassy: I never thought it was a real word until now.

The English started decorating for Christmas much earlier than the Parisians! I felt Christmas coming right after I got into London (even still being on the bus) with the decorations and lights in the trees everywhere. It was nice.

Christmassy Pub (but we didn’t eat there)

The pubs were cozy in London. We were able to get tickets to Avenue Q 2 hours before the performance, so we were looking for a pub for dinner (a pub meal – requested by me). We must have walked into at least 5 pubs that had no empty seats. The one in the picture was one that had seats. I snapped the picture before we found out the kitchen was already closed.

The lavish decorations on Oxford Street

I wonder if the present-shape lights make people shop more, since this is a famous shopping street…

Hyde Park

It was so great seeing my Kiss Me, Kate lead trumpet player (who is studying in London right now)! Miles and his friend Bryant took time out to take me around the city. On my last night, we wandered into Hyde Park, and there was a big fair here! Lots of hot chocolate and snack shops with rides in the back. The overall Christmas ambience just made me happy and excited. We spent some time looking for a perfect spot for this picture (requested by me). You know, enough lighting, background, and everything. Thanks for your patience, guys!

Commonly located at the center of its core, urban parks play a significant role in providing traffic-choked cities with much-needed green lungs. As well as recreation, sporting and cultural venues for residents and visitors alike. Here’s a look at some of the larger urban parks from across the world, as seen in through the lens of Google Earth.

HYDE PARK (including Kensington Gardens), LONDON (625 ACRES)

Created as a public park: 1637. Divided by The Serpentine lake, Hyde Park and Kensington Garden are technically distinct entities but functionally one big green space. Both are part of the impressive “green lung” of parklands in central London.

Check Fricano’s out on Yelp!

The YELP page says that Fricano’s is located in the University of Texas area, but it would probably be considered Hyde Park — being located on 104 E 31st St. Fricano’s is a fairly new establishment, having opened within the last 3 years. Check out this Youtube video about Paul Fricano, owner of Fricano’s Deli, from Archosvalens:

Deci, la fiecare ieşire homofobă a acestuia, ea ne spunea cu mândrie că-i aduce următoarele argumente: “Lasî-i, wăi, s’ sî futî ‘n cur, dac’ li plashi săxul anal, shi-ţ încurcî ţâi?”.

I’m proud to say that once again my state of Illinois has produced a politician that doesn’t care about his constituency, the constitution, or the safety of the people of Illinois. His name is Dickie Durban, a school teacher turned yellow. He votes for any bill being sponsored by his good buddy Obama. He is in the elite club of Illinois politicians like George Ryan, Roland Burris, and Rod Blagojevich. WHat does he care about except his legacy and his pension?

The latest ploy by Durban is to house the GITMO terrorists in Illinois. He proposes the Federal Government to buy a brand new prison in Thomson, Illinois and to convert it into a super-max prison. He will then bring jobs to Illinois by staffing the prison to care for the GITMO guys. A while back I wrote a piece titled “A Gitmo Proposal“ which gave my proposal for housing the same guys in Illinois. My proposal was more interesting than Dickie’s. I wanted to give BO some extra income by housing the terrorists in BO’s vacant house in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.

I have a quandary about the prison in Illinois. It is a relatively new facility in Thomson, Illinois. It currently houses about one hundred and eighty inmates. It has capacity for eighteen hundred. How is it that it is only ten percent utilized? The words I hear are that the state can’t afford to staff it. Didn’t they think about staffing when they built the damn place? It is my guess that this prison was built with ear marks put on some obscure bill by Dickie Durbin.

Illinois has a history of projects that are under utilized. There is a very large air port in southern Illinois near Saint Louis that doesn’t have any air traffic. The old “Field of Dreams” principle of “build it they will come” never materialized but we have a beauty of an air port in an area that no one will ever visit or hear about in the next thousand years. Now we have a prison in the same category. At least this time Dickie is being creative, and is trying to double dip for good old Illinois.

N-are rost.

Just back from the Winter Wonderland event at Hyde Park, London – if you get chance to go to this, then I recommend you take it!

We were fortunate enough to go on the trade night, so it was a lot quieter than it’s no doubt going to be. When it opens to the public (from tomorrow, 20th November ‘09), the site itself will remain free to enter, you will just need to pay for any rides/attractions that you choose to use.

I was a bit of a wimp, and did some ice skating, went on the big wheel (which was a big deal for me!) and on the funhouse (which was the best one I’ve ever been in!). We also all went on ‘The Beast’ – frankly, don’t bother with this… you go inside an inflatable dinosaur, someone jumps out at the end, that’s it. Incredibly lame! In addition to going on the rides/attractions that I went on, the friends that I went with were far more adventurous and had much stronger stomachs and tried a few others, which they largely loved.

What I am really pleased about though is how well my Samsung Jet worked tonight when taking pictures… some of them I absolutely love! This was it’s first real test, and although I think some of them aren’t quite as good as they look on the phone, I think it’s more my inexperience with the new camera than anything else!

What do you guys think of them?

Hehehe…
Fiquei feliz.

Encontramos o gigantesco Albert Memorial e a elaborada escultura Frieze of Parnassus.

Chegamos envergonhados no bonito restaurante.

Another glittering night in London saw the occasion of the 6th Annual Hyde Park Irregulars Award Ceremony and End of Season Do (follow link for photos).

The eagerly anticipated event took place in the labyrinthine ante-rooms of Ye Olde Cheddar Cheese on Fleet Street. Many were in attendance, including Bruce, Slug, Matt, Doug, Greg, Rachel, Paul, Simon, Will and me. There was laughter, tears and tequila.

The voting for the Awards was done live in the pub, with Voting Forms for each category going from person to person until all the votes were cast. There were those in the party who were critical of the Votingmonger’s adjudication and administration, (eh, I was doing my best) but the ballot was fair and the complainers were generally sore because they played crap all season and were never ever going to win anything.

We now present the second portion of Amrita’s first visit to the UK. So, where was I? Ah yes,

We now present the second portion of Amrita’s first visit to the UK.

So, where was I? Ah yes, one more museum.

#6: The British Museum. I’m a huge fan of the atrium Foster did at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, so of course I wanted to see the “original,” so to speak. Foster’s first attempt at the technique was actually at the British Museum, and on our last day in London, the Brit and I decided to check it out. Well, we made it over to that part of town around lunch time and were both really hungry. I was determined to eat fish ‘n’ chips before I left England. We walked up and down three streets, apparently the only streets in London that don’t have a fish ‘n’ chips place or a pub, spent over an hour looking for a place and finally gave up. We grabbed a quick lunch of baked potato and wandered back to the museum. Guess what we found on the street right beside Foster’s masterpiece? Yes, a handful of pubs and fish ‘n’ chip joints. Go figure.

The atrium at the British Museum. We checked out the actual exhibits, too. The English stole a lot of really nice ancient artifacts.

#7: Hyde Park. I did mention that it was surprisingly sunny and warm for late September when I visited London, right? The Brit and I went for a leisurely walk through Hyde Park, and as we both have incredibly sweet tooths (sweet teeth?), and it was such a gorgeous day, we nibbled on some ice cream as we made our way around the Serpentine. Deliciously romantic. When I told Roomie about it, she proposed a Flight of the Conchords analogy, though I’m not sure who is Bret and who is Jermaine…

Not my photo, but that's the park! Thoughts on Hyde vs. Central?

#8: Friends. I was definitely excited about visiting London, because as a design student visiting a new city is a fun way to add to your visual vocabulary. And, of course, I was excited about seeing the Brit after a five-month separation. One thing I was slightly nervous about was meeting his friends, as anyone in a budding relationship will know. Especially when he told me I’d be meeting two of his oldest friends! But it all went well, no awkward conversations, a lot of joshing around and, as they say, taking the piss. I think our two groups would mesh rather nicely, though the opportunity for that is a bit slim, since they’re separated by an ocean (or the Equator, in the case of Queen of the Lab). There’s more to be said on this subject in the post about the next UK visit, as that was the primary goal of the trip.

#9: Slang. Of course, when you’re friends with or dating someone who speaks another language (yes, American English and UK English are different languages) or is from a different culture, you spend a bit of time discussing the socio-linguistic differences. I spent one incredibly funny evening in London hanging out with the Brit and one of his old friends discussing the actual definition of “douche” and the appropriate time to use the word. Then I learned all kinds of terrible British slang, some of which should never be repeated (um, “wank tank”?), and some of which might come in handy one day. For example, who knows what “chuffed” means? Urban dictionary has it kind of right: to be surprised and happy, as in, “I can’t believe I won the lottery, I’m so chuffed!”

#10: Food. And if you know me well enough, you know I can’t visit a place without talking about their food. The highlights of cheap London dining are as follows. Sandwich places are delicious, the English have mastered the salad sandwich, i.e. chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad. They even have chicken tandoori sandwiches, which just sounds wrong, but tastes sooooo good. The Brit’s mom made us dinner most nights, and it was nice to have some home-cooking (delicious at that) to break up the daily eating out; she made a variety of things, from this Asian-inspired chicken dish to a casserole-esque dish. I don’t know what they were called, I just know they were yummy. Oh, and at one point we ate out at this South American restaurant, where for £12 we got the largest meal in the world: a steak with an egg on top, lots of rice, salad, beans. It was iHop sized. The steak was cooked just right.

Well that’s the round-up of the first London trip. It was quite whirlwind, we covered a bit of ground (physically and topically) in only 4 days. I was sad to leave, but as soon as I saw the Eiffel tower on my way to the apartment, things started to pick back up.

Next time, on Jumping over the lazy dog: Amrita has her first full week of teaching. Dun dun dun.
