And guess people will, because it leads to great headlines like, &#8220;<a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/mnEnergy/idUS391015489920091123">Will Hydrogen Power Suck the Lakes Dry?</a>&#8221; What are some of those numbers? The Hydrogen Association <a href="http://www.hydrogenassociation.org/general/faqs.asp#waterrequired">says that</a> it would take 110 billion gallons of water a year to power all 230 million light duty vehicles in the U.S. using hydrogen fuel cells (although, to base your estimate on having <em>all</em> vehicles run on H<sub>2</sub> is pretty bold). 110 billion gallons would be better than the 300 billion gallons of water it takes to make the gasoline that the U.S. uses in a year, but we&#8217;re not sure if this number takes into account all of the incidental water that <a href="http://www.physorg.com/news111926048.html">would be needed</a> to make the hydrogen. (On a related note, does anyone have a good source for how much water it takes to mine lithium or make batteries?) For comparison, the U.S. uses about 4,800 billion gallons of water each year for &#8220;domestic personal water use.&#8221; So, what&#8217;s your guess?</p>

<title><![CDATA[Green group questions economic sense of hydrogen buses]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>It was a while ago now that <a href="http://stephenrees.wordpress.com/2007/05/01/whistler-to-get-20-hydrogen-buses/" target="_blank">I questioned the hydrogen bus plan for Whistler</a>,  in fact May 1, 2007. That post attracted a comment from someone using the pen name &#8220;Astrolounge&#8221; who is obviously an insider, since (s)he revealed that the &#8220;plan&#8221; was even worse than I imagined. Over two years later and long after most of the money has been spent, Ian Bruce of the David Suzuki Foundation has caught up &#8211; and is now being quoted by the <em><a href="http://www.canada.com/news/national/Green+group+questions+economic+sense+hydrogen+buses/2254202/story.html" target="_blank">Province </a></em><a href="http://www.canada.com/news/national/Green+group+questions+economic+sense+hydrogen+buses/2254202/story.html" target="_blank">yesterday</a><em>.</em></p>
<blockquote><p>Bruce says he is concerned about the priority of spending on the hydrogen buses as part of the 12-year $14-billion provincial transit plan announced in January of 2008.</p>
<p>“The new money was roughly $11 billion and of that just under $5 billion was committed from the province,” said Bruce. “Yet in the last budget we had roughly $150 million (toward public transit) so it is not even putting us close to being on track.”</p></blockquote>
<p>The so called &#8220;transit plan&#8221; was bogus. I said that at the time as well. There was never any money &#8211; other than the funds committed to the Canada Line and this daft Olympic showcase as part of the &#8220;hydrogen highway&#8221;. The plan relied on money from the feds, and from the municipal level as well. Neither was consulted &#8211; and no commitments by either were ever made. The &#8220;plan&#8221; was simply a hasty rehashing of earlier proposals, designed to look like a plan. And there was never any thought given to how these projects might get enough operational funding.</p>
<p>The Gordon Campbell government was, as that time, looking forward to the election, and trying to appear green. Somehow they managed to work this trick with a totally inadequate carbon tax. Carol James seized on this as her (failed) strategy, when it would have been much easier to discredit the BC Liberals due to their much greater commitment to greenhouse gas increases through the Gateway &#8211; a major freeway expansion &#8211; the expansion of oil, gas and coal extraction and the yet to be realised plans to build more pipelines to export tar sands output, as well as the very real threat to open up drilling for oil around Haida Gwai.</p>
<blockquote><p>Added to the question of costs is the fact that the hydrogen has to be bused in from Quebec, as it cannot be produced in B.C. in great enough quantities.</p></blockquote>
<p>Actually that&#8217;s nonsense too. If you are going to spend these sorts of sums, a new electrolysis plant running off our own abundant hydro resources should not have been too difficult. After all, how can you have a hydrogen highway without the hydrogen? Of course, the fact that apart form these buses there are no hydrogen vehicles that need the fuel now or in the foreseeable future is just one of those nitpicking details that can be readily dismissed.</p>
<blockquote><p>But, said BC Transit spokeswoman Joanna Morton, investing in future technologies is a must.</p></blockquote>
<p>Actually, it isn&#8217;t. There are all sorts of well proven technologies that would increase transit use, reduce car dependency and start building a greener future. The problem is that would require a government that understands how transportation and land use needs to be changed to a more sustainable model. That would, for a start, mean abandoning freeway widening &#8211; something that Gordon Campbell has made clear he has no intention of doing even though studies the government themselves sponsored show will increase ghg emissions. It would also mean that some new funding source would have to be found to ensure that the proposed capital projects would actually be able to be operated. This is the most pressing problem in Greater Vancouver &#8211; not for BC Transit, since none of the other cities in the province will ever see modern transit investment in anything other than buses. Translink  (SoCoBriTCA) cannot afford any system expansion &#8211; and has simply raised fares and taxes to keep operating the same system it has now for the forseeable future.</p>
<p>The real question that needs to be answered is why this government can find millions for hydrogen buses which cannot operate effectively in Whistler and meets no identifiable needs at all, when all sorts of worthwhile projects that would increase transit use and enable a more efficient land use pattern are neglected. The Evergreen Line is the one that springs to mind, but let&#8217;s assume that BC Transit has to be involved and needs to spend in other places &#8211; so perhaps Rail for the Valley and on the E&#38;N on the Island  come to mind. Or perhaps streetcars for Victoria. None of these looks Olympic of course. None offer photo ops with the Governator. But they would actually work to increase transit use and encourage transit oriented development, and thus actually do something effective about ghg emissions. Something that can not be claimed for hydrogen buses in Whistler.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Carbon Dioxide emissions in the states are down.  The government estimates that between 2007 and 2009, carbon emissions will be down by a whopping nine percent.  This is the equivalent of shutting down 400 coal plants for a year.  This is good news and it&#8217;s real.  Now the bad news.  The reason for the decline is our economic slump.  Carbon emissions basically track the rise or fall in gross domestic product (GDP).</p>
<p>How can we get GDP and jobs going again without CO2 following?  Are greenhouse gases irrevocably tied to economic growth?  Must we stop growth and employment in order to stop coastal, island and wetland flooding by rising oceans, stop regional desertification, rivers running dry and plant and animal extinctions?</p>
<p>Demand for electricity was down 4% in the first half of 2009, including a decline at FPL.  Does this conform to the need for a new nuclear plant and a cost recovery charge on customers&#8217; bills?  Utility representatives say the decline is only temporary and that demand will increase again with economic recovery but there is uncertainty now about that future demand.</p>
<p>Industrial demand is down to use levels during the 1990s.  Is this due to recession or are industries taking actions to increase operating efficiencies?  Is the increasing production and use of energy efficient appliances in homes slowing electric consumption?  Some states are providing incentives for such appliances.  In fact, even the US government has stepped in to phase out incandescent light bulbs beginning in 2012.</p>
<p>Last April, John Wellinghoff, chairman of the FERC, said the combination of renewable energy and energy conservation could avert the need to build any coal or nuclear plants to meet base-load capacity.  We may not need any ever, he said.  The gears of fossil fuel consumption are turning more slowly.  The nuclear industry can&#8217;t find private investors and must indenture their own ratepayers.  Consumers understand the carbon footprint idea and are paying more attention to their own.</p>
<p>Conservation; Energy Efficiency; Renewable Requirements for Utilities; Solar, Biomass, Ocean and Wind Generated Electricity; Liquid Biofuels; Fuel Cells; Electric Transportation; Organic Food production.  These are the attitudes and industries that will permanently cut our link to carbon emissions.  Instead of GDP, we&#8217;ll measure growth by the amount of CO2 that doesn&#8217;t enter the atmosphere.  The new, jobs-supporting growth economy climbing out of this recession is non-carbon, non-radioactive, non-polluting, sustainable and safe.</p>

<p>Driving home the green message – on hydrogen<br />
Today the ribbon was cut at the city’s first hydrogen filling station, and the city’s eight hydrogen-powered vehicles were introduced – and celebrated. This takes the City of Copenhagen another step along the long road to achieving its goal of becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral capital city. Later this year it will also acquire 25 electric cars, bringing the total number of environmentally friendly vehicles to thirty-three. The ribbon to the hydrogen filling station was cut by Technology and Environment Mayor Klaus Bondam, allowing the first hydrogen-powered vehicle to trundle in and be filled up by Director of H2 Logic Jacob Krogsgaard in the presence of, among others, Danish Minister for Transport Lars Barfoed, Canadian Ambassador Peter Lundy, and Chairman of the Board of HyRamp Andreas Ziolek. The hydrogen-powered vehicles and hydrogen filling station were also shown to the press, cooperation partners and other parties with an interest in climate-friendly transport.</p>
<p>Running on hydrogen<br />
Once the City of Copenhagen’s eight new hydrogen-powered vehicles, comprising two working vehicles and six cars, had been filled up with hydrogen, they were taken for a test-drive. Technology and Environment Mayor Klaus Bondam, Minister for Transport Lars Barfoed and Ambassador Lundy all enjoyed a trip around the city.</p>
<p>Championing clean transport<br />
At the opening ceremony, Klaus Bondam said: “Today we are putting Copenhagen on the map as a champion of clean transport. Together with H2 Logic, Copenhagen is setting in motion the development of hydrogen transport in Denmark and in Northern Europe because the hydrogen filling station in Copenhagen will help provide future hydrogen-powered vehicles from Scandinavia and Germany with hydrogen. The project is a visionary investment in the future and one of many that will ensure that we achieve our goal of becoming the first carbon-neutral capital city by 2025.&#8221;</p>
<p>Many projects to be launched<br />
The opening included various speeches, including from Danish Minister for Transport Lars Barfoed, who said: “The Danish government is keenly focused on the development of sustainable transport solutions that can help us achieve our goal of reducing carbon without losing mobility. We will therefore be closely monitoring developments in this project and listening to the lessons learned by the City of Copenhagen and H2 Logic. I think it is extremely important for us to launch as many projects as possible within sustainable transport solutions so that we ensure broad coverage of the possibilities rather than focusing solely on one technology or another. The Centre for Green Transport under the Road Safety and Transport Agency is currently in partnership with the City of Copenhagen to establish a network between the municipalities and the Centre to gather experience and share knowledge on electric, hydrogen and hybrid vehicles.” Canadian Ambassador to Denmark Peter Lundy believes that the project is the result of a very exciting collaboration between two nations – Denmark and Canada – that are world leaders in the development of green technology: “The collaboration is bringing new technologies to the market that are having an immediate positive effect on the environment and our daily lives.”</p>
<p>Copenhagen an ambassador for hydrogen technology<br />
Chairman of the Board of HyRamp Andreas Ziolek is an expert on the establishment of regional and private partnerships in Europe when it comes to the development of hydrogen transport. Ziolek also made a speech, stressing the important role that Copenhagen will be playing for the future of the climate at the upcoming summit meeting. He also expressed delight that Copenhagen now has a hydrogen filling station so that the city can be an ambassador for hydrogen technology during the summit.</p>
<p>Impetus for developments<br />
The purpose of the hydrogen-powered vehicle project is to provide impetus for developments in the area. The City of Copenhagen has therefore taken the lead with the acquisition of hydrogen vehicles, while a private partner, H2 Logic, has invested in the hydrogen filling station.</p>
<p>Jacob Krogsgaard, Director of H2 Logic, congratulated the City of Copenhagen on the acquisition of the eight hydrogen-powered vehicles and thanked it for the collaboration: “The transfer of the hydrogen-powered vehicles to the City of Copenhagen and the opening of the hydrogen filling station are another big step towards commercial use of hydrogen for transport. The City of Copenhagen’s daily use of the vehicles will bring major operating experience. And the vehicles and filling station could not have been delivered today without a successful public-private partnership.”</p>

<p>* Dip a Q-tip in hydrogen-peroxide and gently swipe underneath the nails. <br />
* Use a whitening toothpaste with a soft brush. <br />
* Using a nail buffer will not only reduce the discolorization, but it will also smooth out any rough ridges on the nails (which is a sign of vitamin deficiency). <br />

<p>Keshe Mehran Tavakoli Keshe is a nuclear engineer involved with plasma reactors which are designed in analogy with cosmology. He postulates that the known inner core of Earth encapsulates a smaller hollow space of about 8 km diameter. This small center is filled with hydrogen, helium and other elements, and its acts like a semi-nuclear reactor. This reactor generates a proper magnetic field. This first magnetic field is superimposed by the second magnetic field which is created by convection. Similar to this approach Marvin Herndon, a US geophysicist, postulates a georeactor in the center of Earth, but filled with heavy radioactive elements. Keshe refers however to the solar system where the majority of the lightest elements, hydrogen and helium, are positioned in the center, in the Sun. While this theory is not confirmed by the academic world, Keshe states that by applying his theoretical concepts in reactor prototypes he generates voltage and current, and is able to create graphene at room temperature and ambient pressure. Mehran Keshe was born in Iran in 1958, as son to an X-ray engineer working for Philips and Siemens, and he was introduced to the world of radiation and nuclear at a very young age. In the mid-seventies he moved to the United Kingdom, Europe, for further education in the field of nuclear physics. In 1981 he graduated from Queen Mary, University of London as nuclear engineer specialized in reactor technology system control. At that time he developed a number of theoretical ideas related to more simple nuclear concepts and their applications, and the possibilities of using double magnetics fields inside reactors, which ideas were not accepted for testing by the nuclear industry. He then decided to enter into private international trading. While running his private business he developed further his nuclear concepts, and finally in 2002 he has decided to finish the full design of his ideas about nuclear technology. This includes the production of gravity and anti-gravity, and energy be the use of nuclear material in a clean and safe hydrogen fuelled reactor. Mehran Keshe introduced the concept of double magnetic fields, to explain the magnetic and gravitational field of Earth. Unknown by the existing scientific community he wrote a number of scientific papers in 2004 and sent them for peer-review, such as &#8220;The creation of black holes&#8221;. When one of the persons performing the peer-review used in public his information he decided to draw back his papers, and to concentrate further on the building of prototypes. In 2004 Keshe was invited to Belgium by a semi-official organization for the evaluation of the technology, and his technology was examined by scientists at the VUB in Brussels from November of 2004 until March 2005. The report from the University concluded that the production of energy through his new technology &#8220;is feasible&#8221;. Since early October of 2005 three international patents for the plasma reactor technology have been applied for, for all aspects of its possible use, covering some hundreds of applications. At the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006 several static plasma reactors were build, which proved the theoretical insights stated before. These static reactors work at room temperature and at normal atmospheric pressure, similar as the conditions claimed for cold fusion. These reactors provide voltage and current. Also deposits of pure carbon layers are generated in these reactors, and Raman spectroscopy performed by a well known scientific Institute has confirmed that these layers are wall-graphite of sp2, also called graphene. Since the beginning of 2006 several prototypes of dynamic reactors are build, some specifically designed to create hovering effects, similar to effects sees with magnetic levitation. Keshe claims that basic hovering effects have been achieved.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">He was born on July 12, 1913 in Los Angeles, joint winner, with Polykarp Kusch, also of the U.S., of the 1955 Nobel Prize for Physics for experimental work that spurred refinements in the quantum theories of electromagnetic phenomena.  He joined the faculty of Columbia University in 1938 and worked in the radiation laboratory there during World War II.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The lines that appear in the spectrum (dispersed light, as by a prism)  of hydrogen are not simply single dark lines, as they appear, but actually are composed of many lines that are extremely close together.  This hyperfine structure was predicted by the quantum mechanics of the noted English physicist Paul A.M. Dirac, but Lamb applied new methods to be slightly different from what had been predicted.  This necessitated a revision in the theory to fit the facts.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">While a professor of physics at Stanford University, California (1951-56), lamb devised microwave techniques for examining the hyperfine structure of the spectral lines of helium.  In 1956 he became professor of theoretical physics at Oxford University and in 1962 was appointed professor of physics at Yale University.</p>

<p>The idea was to have two turbopumps (like on SSME), but instead operate on the expander cycle. Two heat exchangers, two turbines, two pumps. One for each propellant.</p>

<p>This is a LOX-hydrogen engine. Also this means that since there is the same propellant on both sides of the axle, in the turbine and in the pump, no elaborate seals are needed. Original intent for these engines was for in-space reusable stuff, that needs to be operated many times and for a long time without maintenance. Size was in the RL10 class, about 70 kN. (RL10 has grown though.)</p>

<p>Una sociedad no puede existir sin misterio, para eso crearon la economía:  un sistema de creencias como toda religión, una rama del derecho como pura teología. No es mucho lo que diferencia a un economista de un astrólogo: explican de qué ha muerto el tipo pero si lo salvan por casualidad. La economía no es una ciencia porque no puede usar ninguna de sus herramientas: su capacidad predictiva es patética (hasta el hombre del tiempo acierta más) y su método deductivo se construye según sople el viento. <strong>La economía no es discurso, es monserga, sus reglas narrativa y su mercado prosopopeya</strong>. Son voces que expresan todas las opiniones posibles y claro, alguna acabará acertando en la diana.</p>
<p>Cuánto más entiendes sus reglas, más te premia y por eso puede que crees más en ellas, sin embargo, cuánto menos crees en ella, más te castiga. El obrero eso lo sabe bien, pero desconoce que él es imprescindible para el sistema, que se trabaja para mantener vivo al sistema. El obrero es controlado desde su ambición: la economía pues, nace como arma de dominio social para controlar a la sociedad desde su egoísmo, o  al menos hasta que se estampe contra una pared: una crisis.<strong> Todas las crisis son una magnífica máquina de redistribución de fortunas a la que ningún capitalista renunciará jamás</strong> porque si no se generan pobres no se podrá generar suficiente riqueza; por cada hombre rico debe haber mil pobres.</p>
<p>No puede ni curar los males que ella misma crea: si los economistas acertaran siempre, nadie se arruinaría ni nadie se haría rico. Los mismos premios Nobel en economía admiten no tener recetas para salir de la crisis. <strong>Éstos sabios son los mismos que en los tiempos que corren se matan para describirnos lo evidente y explicarnos lo que ya pasó, el ayer</strong>: ésta era entonces su función en la sociedad? Y luego están los hipócritas: el mismo ejecutivo que usa las matemáticas para calcular los céntimos de rentabilidad de coste de transporte de un producto, es el mismo que se compra un Ferrari que lo trasladará por la ciudad con menor eficiencia que un tren de cercanías. En una sociedad en la que se confunde valor con precio, cuando uno compra un reloj ya no es para saber la hora, sino para marcar <a href="http://diggidaggi.wordpress.com/2009/03/12/sotto-vento/" target="_blank"><em>estatus</em> social</a>.</p>
<p>Si alguien prospera alguna vez según sus reglas, dentro de su marco, afirman con autobombo que esas leyes existen pero, no quieren que hablemos en voz alta de ellas, porque cada diagnóstico que se hace cambia su estado. Y si yo no quiero jugar a <em>su juego</em>? Dejar de creer en ellos será suficiente para que dejen de existir porque lo único que nos mendigan, es confianza y consumismo, y <strong>esto se combate ignorando a todos estos chamanes</strong> (políticos, economistas, banqueros, sindicatos, empresarios, capitalistas, publicistas, etc) <strong>y guardando el dinero debajo del colchón</strong> aunque el dinero robado siga en el bolsillo de unos culpables que aún andan sueltos.</p>
<p>Y nosotros mirando si la cebolla sube de precio.</p>

<p>Hydrogen is the ultimate fuel because when burned it produces only heat and no carbon dioxide. The Windhunter system is a better and cleaner way to get hydrogen than the current method from natural gas.</p>
<p>Most earth scientists are convinced that global warming is a fact (which it is not) and that our human activity of burning fossil fuels is the main cause. We burn coal, oil, natural gas and other hydrocarbon resources which release huge amounts of heat trapping gases into the world&#8217;s atmosphere. The resulting temperature rise increases hurricane storm intensity while at the same time reduces food production. The amount of fossil fuels is finite and humans and other animals may not survive if the earth&#8217;s temperature continues to rise. So everything must be done to convert to some other energy system as soon as possible. Many studies discuss the advantages of clean burning hydrogen, but are stymied by the difficulty of producing large quantities.</p>
<p>Hydrogen can be produced by wind turbines and electrolysers on the proposed WINDHUNTER vessels. These large ships or platforms will operate out of sight of land either moored or anchored while facing into the wind and the oncoming waves. Millions of them can operate on the world&#8217;s oceans with minimal environmental impact and human resistance.</p>
<p>Converting to a hydrogen energy system world wide will save earth&#8217;s resources, reduce heat trapping gases and bring peace since wars over land based resources will become unnecessary. The wind energy will be available for harvesting as long as the sun shines on our beautiful rotating earth.</p>

After 2030, biofuels will increasingly be used for trucks, shipping and aircraft, said Lew Fulton, a Senior Transport Energy Specialist at the IEA.<!--more--></p>
<p>IEA&#8217;s expert told the <a href="http://www.agra-net.com/portal2/home.jsp?template=productpage&#38;pubid=ag072" target="_blank">F.O. Licht World Ethano</a>l conference that after 2030, biodiesel demand was expected to be double that of ethanol, while around one-third of shipping would be powered by biofuels. In the longer-term, by 2050, the IEA sees biofuels taking a 26% share of the total transportation fuels market, but increasingly challenged by other renewable forms of energy.</p>
<p>In the short-term, the IEA sees continuing strong growth for first and second-generation biofuels to 2014, despite the recent economic downturn. With fast rising car sales in China and India, &#8220;we need six Saudi Arabia&#8217;s of new oil capacity just to stand still,&#8221; he commented. &#8220;Consolidation suggests a transition to a more economically sustainable production model,&#8221; said Fulton. Lower cost biofuel producers, such as Brazil, will also continue to flourish, he predicted.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Last month EIN talked about the potential to marry hydrogen fueling <a href="http://einow.wordpress.com/2009/10/01/hydrogen-fueling-infrastructure-help-from-heavy-duty-trucks-and-box-stores/">infrastructure</a> for light duty vehicles with forklift and heavy duty applications.  Along these lines, Whole Foods Markets recently switched from battery operated forklifts to <a href="http://blog.wholefoodsmarket.com/2009/11/hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered-forklifts/">hydrogen fuel-cell forklifts</a> in its Maryland distribution center.  The move will save operators time, provide a more safe refueling situation, and facilitate significant greenhouse gas emission reductions.  The Whole Foods blog estimates that each hydrogen fuel cell forklift operation will reduce greenhouse emissions by  80% over previous operations (approximately the equivalent of removing two traditional cars from the road per year).</p>
<p>Check out this video showing how the hydrogen fueling process works.  Whole Foods estimates that this process will save 3,750 hours per year when compared to their old lead acid batteries.</p>

<p>Whole Foods would not have been able to proceed with this project without money from the <a href="http://www.recovery.gov/Pages/home.aspx">American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)</a> to bring down the cost of the fuel cells. These types of public investments are necessary to get new, environmentally beneficial, technologies off of the ground.  They should be leveraged to the maximum extent possible.  In this case, Whole Foods could not have justified the fork lift transition without ARRA funds.  These funds helped not only pay for hydrogen fuel cell forklifts, they justified the installation of hydrogen fueling infrastructure (without ARRA funds).  If designed with the future in mind, these types of infrastructure investments can be used to help fuel the early adoption of hydrogen fuel cell cars.</p>

<p>The Policy Council’s Best &#38; Worst examines environmental legislation to anticipate in the 2010 session. Taxpayers need to be vigilant for initiatives that will have little or no impact on global climate change or local environmental protections – but will drive up costs for South Carolina homeowners and consumers.</p>
<p>At the same time, be on the lookout for the good ideas we hope will resurface in the coming year – measures that let local communities guide environmental decision-making, and returning control over the energy market in the state to the private sector.</p>

<p>Here’s a quick look at the good and the bad:</p>
<p><strong>Best Ideas for 2010</strong></p>
<p>1)       <em>Empower Localities. </em>Whenever possible the General Assembly should defer to localities regarding environmental concerns.<em> </em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p>2)       <em>Privatize the Energy Market. </em>The state’s monopoly power over energy distorts the market, reducing competition and increasing costs to consumers.</p>
<p>3)       <em>Energy Deregulation.</em> Legislation creating energy regulatory bodies is 40 years old, and its original mission to bring energy to rural areas is obsolete. It’s time to loosen state regulations on energy providers.</p>
<p><strong>Worst Ideas for 2010</strong></p>
<p>1)       <em>Mandating a Renewable Energy Portfolio</em>. Legislation requiring electric utilities to expand the use of renewable energy resources threatens to cost jobs and raise consumer utility bills.</p>
<p>2)       <em>Cap and Trade</em>. This sweeping legislation now in Congress would create a system that caps CO<sub>2</sub> emissions at a politically acceptable level and creates a global marketplace to buy and sell allotted emissions levels. We estimate that the bill would cost South Carolina 18,965 jobs by 2020.</p>
<p>3)       <em>More Subsidies for Hydrogen</em>. Federal and state lawmakers persist in pushing hydrogen technology that experts agree is “<a href="http://www.scpolicycouncil.com/research-and-publications-/budget/769-alternative-energy-promoters-cant-visualize-alternatives-to-taxpayer-funded-research">one of the least efficient</a>, most expensive ways to reduce greenhouse gases.”</p>

<title><![CDATA[Water Wheels: A Transition to Hydrogen Cargo Ships]]></title>

Large cargo ships emit fossil fuels just as any other form of transportation such as a car or a heavy metal locomotive, however the newest innovations prove how hydrogen based cargo ships can make drastic changes in society. Some consider the global shipping industry as an emission juggernaut, but hydrogen-hybrid boats can easily switch over to a zero-emissions glide into the oceans. The first design was actually created and based off of a British Waterways vessel and is powered by stored hydrogen. Unlike normal hydrogen based vehicles, the cargo ships actually store the hydrogen-lithium-hydride power safely to avoid dangerous accidents because there is no need to carry high pressured gasses on board. Another positive benefit is that the weight of the heavy hydrogen is no longer a problem on smooth sailing waterways. With all of this taken into consideration, the ships that carry our precious goods can easily be powered by the water that they’re gliding across on the ocean.</p>
