Taking advantage of another nice, somewhat sunny day, I went off to visit Animal Kingdom in Bordento

Taking advantage of another nice, somewhat sunny day, I went off to visit Animal Kingdom in Bordentown, NJ. They have a lot of different kinds of monkeys there, and of course, the main attraction for me – the giraffes.

Back when I was younger, I was really into animal rights. PETA was fairly new then, and not as well-known (or as insanely insane) as it is now. I would order their pamphlets, check out their books, write letters, get involved with whatever I could. At the time, I was against zoo and aquariums, believing that animals shouldn’t be caged up and should be allowed to live free.

Today, I realize that it’s quite more complicated than that. Many zoo host endangered and rare species, some of whom wouldn’t survive if it weren’t for breeding programs in zoos to keep the species going. Plus, many zoos have great environments for the animals to be in. (Of course it’s no comparison to being in the wild, but still.)

Sometimes, though, I have flashbacks of those moments and those feelings when I was younger and today was such a day. The zoo at Animal Kingdom is pretty small, with many of the animals in small enclosures and what seems to be not too much stimuli, etc. So I don’t know how I feel about these animals being there. Here is what the website says:

Animal Kingdom boasts one of the most extensive wild animal collections in New Jersey. Many of our Animals are endangered species, which is why the zoo is so important. Our mission is to educate visitors about the importance of preserving the environment and, as a result, the animals that live here.

Another thing really got to me as well. The zoo allows you to feed some animals, such as some of the monkeys. Other exhibits, such as the giraffes, have clear signs that say not to feed the animals because they have special diets. Yet, you will see a bunch of people – adults chief among them – carelessly feeding them popcorn or whatever else because, ooo it’s so fun and cool and freaky! The giraffe’s tongue feels so slimy! The signs could not be bigger or more obvious yet people remain oblivious. I even saw a guy read the sign and feed the giraffe anyway! What the hell, that kind of stuff just really pisses me off.

I tried to enjoy my time there even after all that. Here are some of the photos I captured:

The baby giraffe, Rocket, was so cute! He was running around all over the place. He was actually born at the zoo in July 2008.

Giraffe booty!

Another one of Rocket, the cutie!

Giraffes have long tongues.

They had hyenas! In pretty small enclosures…

White peacock. That’s the unscientific name.

Camel (with one hump, in case you were wondering).

Odd how there are always peacocks just running around in zoos.

The emperor needs his groove back! I love llamas. I’m not sure why.

I looked around everywhere to figure out what this was but couldn’t find a sign. After examining the photos I came to the conclusion it is a tapir and my zoology professor mom-in-law confirmed. Then we Googled it – South American Tapir! Do I know my animals or what!

Kind of ending on a sad note, but the monkeys in cages killed me. This one looks like some kind of lemur, based on the eyes.

The above picture was taken on a game drive in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. There are 3 different animal track in this one photo, can you see them? The matchbox is there to give you an indication of size.

A – This is the back foot print of a Chacma Baboon. The large size indicating an adult male and the average track length is 90 mm.

B – This paw print with the massive size can only belong to the biggest cat in Africa. The lions paw print is on average 110-130 mm broad and 90-120 mm long.

C – The claw marks and round shape indicates the track of a hyena.

Professional trackers must be able to identify the small details that are left behind by the animals they are tracking. A vast amount of information can be collected about the animals and their movements and this was how I explained the scenario to my guest.

Track A belongs to a primate, the baboon and their behaviour is sometimes more ‘human” than animal. One example: baboons will sometimes follow big predators, like the lion, this has been documented many times. They will even mock the predator. We might think that the baboon is mad and putting himself in danger, but it is actually saver when the baboon can see the enemy, that means that the predator is not busy stalking the troop.

Track B is a lion paw print, or pug, it is slightly miss-printed because the lion step on a small stone. The stone is clearly visible under the front, right digit. Lions can consume 30kg of meat in a sitting and that makes them very heavy. This lion clearly had a very full belly. The extra weight was the reason the lion almost tripped over a little stone.

When lions are done with a carcass, the pride will move to the nearest waterhole to quench their thirst.

Track C belongs to a Brown hyena and this scavenger was heading for the carcass the lion just left behind. Lions do kill Brown hyenas and the latter will only approach the carcass once the lions had left the area. The spotted Hyena, on the other hand, will even chase lions away from their kill. The Brown hyenas are strictly scavangers and can smell meat over vast distances.

This ability to smell meat is effective only if there is a prevailing wind in the area and with this information a tracker can calculate the previous days wind conditions. The hyena was heading in the opposite direction of the lion, the heading was north east. That means there was a South Wester blowing the following night and that can be used to predict the next rains. Remember, I am only telling you what I saw in the tracks.

This is why I love the art of tracking. I am able to show my guest all these miracles with out even seeing the animals. The subject of my next article will be on elephant tracks and unbtil then, “Totsiens”.

Kelompok Topi Jerami berusaha mencari informasi menuju pulau langit.

A hyena is a large wild, doglike animal that lives in Africa and Asia.

Hyenas known as spotted hyenas are sometimes called “laughing hyenas” because they make sounds that resemble hysterical human laughter.

But the hyena is not really laughing. The laughing hyena usually makes it weird, laughing howl only when it is frightened or excited.

Hyena have the reputation of being cowardly animals because they prefer to eat meat already killed by other animals.

They often follow lions and eat the leftovers of the larger animals’ meals. They even eat the leftover bones, crushing them with their strong teeth and powerful jaws.

Hyenas are not particular about what they eat. They are mostly scavengers and will eat any “garbage” they happen upon.

For this reason, they are useful as animal “garbage collectors” and help keep the ground.
