A ex hóspede do Brasil e rechonchudinha Mariah Carey, acaba de lançar seu vídeo para o single “I Wanna Know What Love Is” (em português: “Quero Saber O Que É O Amor”), uma regravação de 1984 da banda Foreigner.

A música está na trilha sonora da novela global: “Viver a Vida” e já faz um estrondoso sucesso pelo mundo.

O o clipe é dirigido por Hype Williams, que já dirigiu vários artistas como Cold Play (Viva La Vida) e a novíssima de Jay Z feat. Alicia Keys (Empire State of Mind).

Assistam abaixo e comentem:

Eu particularmente não gostei muito, o que vale a pena são as demonstrações de amor, entre amigos, entre um casal gay, entre pai e filho, marido e mulher, médico e paciente. E acreditem, ela está magérrima (Photoshop?).

Quanto a qualidade do vídeo, tá ruím mesmo, foi o único que vazou até agora no próprio site da cantora.

Agora, em compensação, o clipe de Empire State of Mind, dirigido pelo mesmo Hype Williams tá bem legal, uma homenagem a Nova Iorque (adoro).

I found the above in the library the other day. Trip the fuck out. It basically functions as an addendum or corollary to my previous post about the World box set. Clyde brings to light some of the same points, especially with regard to Rocco. However, I do have a couple [Popeye's chicken] bones to pick here. First, not including The Creeper among the list of elite Nineties graphic design dudes.
Come on now.
In addition, including the almost universally-maligned Lick in any list of elite Nineties videos surprised the fuck out of me, but if he’s co-signing the XYZ vid and Uno it kind of makes sense from the persective of Mr. Singleton’s un-edited mindstate. However, when combined with listing Alphonzo Rawls as one of the elite talents of the whole decade, that seemingly left-field choice caused me to draw the following conclusion: Alphonzo Rawls is underrated as fuck. I would also go so far as to say the following:
Alphonzo Rawls was The Black Danny Way.
The dude was one of five or so people in the whole world that could pull legitimately cool, progressive shit on both vert and street. Alf, however, displayed a much more palatable delivery than Way’s trademark “mechanized Aryan super-soldier” style.

Maybe an “In Defense of Lick” post lurks somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind. That might be too challenging of a thesis, though. Here’s my deal: Lick will always have mad personal nostalgia value because it was the first video that my friend acquired after we all started “going hard” at skating. Consequently, we hung out at curbs all day in the middle of the summer and tried to find as many 2 cm ledges down stairs as possible. This was before kids started using the term “hubba,” so I think we called them “jibs” or some shit. However, much to my dismay, Lick’s ponderous length, cliche security guard encounters, preponderance of helmet footage (mostly filmed at a Mezozoic-era version of the Berrics known as the Powell SkateZone), not-very-memorable skating, and questionable music supervision* have relegated it to the shitcan of history–even moreso that its philosophical counterparts Da Deal is Dead and Whatever. Indeed, if I remember correctly, the dudes in Lick sported a pastel-colored pant for each of the pastel-colored test pattern bars on the box cover. I could probably write a dissertation solely about the pants of Lick. Consider, if you will, Misha Gundman; in addition to skating to some kind of wacky Swedish rock ‘n roll (I thought Sweden only produced death metal?!), one could probably fabricate two additional garments from the cuffs of his pants alone. All this didn’t matter to us, though, because, in essence, we were just fuckin’ psyched on how exponentially beyond what we were doing the skating was.

Like Alf’s part. Funny thing–in the Next days, he was essentially on the same level as both Way and his bro Koston. Unfortunately, by the end of the decade he had become just another 16-stair f/s boardslide dude. Back then, however, It seemed like Alf and Koston were both spawned in some grassland Southern California commune where all those wacky H-Street multi-spine Frankenstein ramps popped up. At least, that was how they existed in the ol’ Theatre of the Mind. Furthermore, Alf’s pro models sported some of the coolest album-cover rip-off graphics ever:

His part in Lick, in addition to containing a line at that indoor basketball court ledge that went around in a complete circle (bro) and a caballerial back-foot flip and that Marc Johnson trick from that Chocolate commercial sixteen years ago on vert, features an early-Nineties hip-hop classic from Positive K that may or may not have been ghost-written by Grand Puba or BDK or one of those fuckin’ guys. Skate videos and hip-hop videos from this era had a lot in common (click to enlarge below Venn diagram). I spent countless hours watching both. They both were intensely intimidating, yet simultaneously attractive as fuck, portraying a world I would have given my left arm to have been a part of. Looking back, though, they both seem more than a little goofy–just some bros filming their bros on some bro-cam shit.**

The tune, “Night Shift,” is a gripping tale of how a gentleman–in this case, Positive K himself–uses his interpersonal skills to persuade young ladies to join the ranks of the world’s oldest profession. Not only does he persuade them to make this vocational decision, but, as you can see from the video, they deliver to him their gross earnings on a handsome wooden table. Said table is indeed a fine piece of furniture, despite being fabricated by someone other than Anthony Popparlardo. Seriously, I also like how all the girls in this video, and in videos in the early Nineties in general, dressed like they were going to an interview at a law firm or some shit. That’s class, baby.

Another classy, timeless, transcendent element to “Night Shift” is the following life lesson from Big Daddy Kane:

Man, you got to work your women by the scale

I mean, if she skinny, make her bring you home a good penny

And if she fat, make her pay like she weigh

Seriously–if Lick is The Outsiders, that’s the Robert Frost poem.

*notable exception: “Releasing Hypotical Gasses” by Organized Konfusion, which I only realized was cool when I became a college radio hip-hop backpacker years later. And the Tribute version of “I Don’t Know” at least five months before VR (I seriously just now realized that. I don’t know why that didn’t register the first time I saw VR; perhaps that particular facet of my skate nerdery had not yet developed). And “Don’t Stop “Til You Get Enough.” Come to think of it, the music supervision wasn’t that bad. Alice in Chains was kind of an inspired choice, but I would have chosen something from Jar of Flies. In all honesty, I am shocked that no one has used “I Stay Away” in a video part yet. You wanna talk about a record that transports one on a journey through time and space? Fuck. New AIC record is decent btw

The wools not getting pulled over these eyes, technical difficulties my ass. A tactical mission was underway when Beyonce psyched up the masses for her ’historic’ collaboration with Lady Gaga only to send the internet into a meltdown akin to the opening of the 7th seal when there was no video to be seen. I myself was at work while the world waited in front of computers and television screens, can’t front like I didn’t check for it when I got home though. I’ve got to hand it Beyonce, she is the lean green money making machine we call pop stardom in full effect. This was an age old marketing strategy which was sneaky, simple, but effective. Build anticipation to generate a buzz, dissapoint to build a buzz, and double the buzz and anticipation in the process. Even those who really don’t give two expletives about Lady GaGa or Beyonce will now be compelled by forces beyond their control to watch this video when it does air. I can’t lie like I didn’t want to see it too, but it’s mostly due to the fact I’m a huge fan of Hype’s work and wanted to see what he came up with, and I did like the song enough to put it on my December 2008 mixtape. Back to my main point, Beyonce plays her fans like Miles played the trumpet….I find her domination of pop music fascinating in regards to her business sense and ability to build her brand. I’m still waiting for the independents to overthrow the empire that is the major music labels but until then behold the power……

Ok…. So I was trying to explain to my friend the other day that there are 2 DIFFERENT songs from Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, but BOTH are featured on each other’s songs. The music video directed by Hype Williams “Video Phone” by Beyoncé is out now. ”Telephone” by Lady Gaga is being shot now featuring Beyoncé. I can’t wait to see that video. As we learned from the 2009 VMA’s, five people in the music industry really care about music videos. Three of them are involved up there (Beyonce, Lady Gaga [ooo la la], Hype Williams), one of them is suffering the effects of most of the nation hating him for expressing his views on music videos (Kanye West), and the last is just really grateful because she sings country music and it has always been a dream for her to one day win a VMA and now she has one and she can’t tell you how much it means to her (Taylor Swift).

I am glad that three of those people got together. I am not sure what the video “means” but I can tell it has something to do with female objectification, nouveau film noir, advances in telecommunications, short people and what their names are, robot people, bust support science/hypotheses, hostage taking, hostage being, plastic toy guns, real ray guns, brassieres that match one’s skin color exactly, concealing weapons in garters, hubba hubba, Bettie Page, neon assault rifles fitted with silencers, rising sun onesies/sensible swimwear, archery (and by association Geena Davis), chairs, dancing in chairs, motorcycles, and the possibility we are living in a world where Beyonce is more dangerous than her boo (You crazy for this observation, J!).

We should just give Beyonce and Gaga the keys to the world, let them run things for a while at least. I am for that.

After watching the video for Video Phone, my appreciation for the directorial talents of Hype Williams remained solidified. He makes a mean ass video and this was no exception. Hype is known for is his ingenious application and use of color within his compositions. Brilliant neons, muted purples and metalics, amplified earth tones, his creations perfectly fit the tone and energy of the musical pieces they accompany. As a young grafitti artist he wanted to be the Basquiat or Keith Haring of the streets, an ambition as indicative of his artistic prowess as it is of his extraordinary aesthetic ideology. His canvas is film and he masters it with the grace of Boticelli and the eye of a visionary. I became somewhat of a fan when Beyonce dropped the video for Single Ladies. Like Kanye, I must agree that it was one of the best of the decade. It was stunning in it’s simplicity, a perfect blend of stylish direction and flawless performance that will certainly be heralded as a classic 20 years from now. After it, however, Beyonce’s video game slipped a tad which was probably due to the pressure of trying to top herself. Hype single handedly up’d her cool points in my book about 50%. It seemed she let go of what her fans have come to expect and just had fun with this video, and it worked. Hype shoots women as surreally beautiful creatures, an augmentation of the qualities already existent within his female subjects. In this respect, since he’s dealing with Beyonce’s self proclaimed hardcore alter ego Sasha Fierce, we are presented with Beyonce as a collage of femme fatale archetypes complete with pop art shotguns, high heels and side-swept bangs. Influences range from Betty Page and Priss Asagiri, to Sin City’s Gail, Barbarella and g’d up chulas in the style of Mr. Cartoon. The men play the background as Beyonce’s faceless playthings, tied to chairs, stroked with instruments of death and impailed on spinning wheels. The song itself is coquettishly airheaded, lyrically vacant but you know it wasn’t intended to be a grammy nominee. It’s a slice of friday night/saturday morning sexiness better suited for 2am strobe light and smoke machine induced frenzies. Flash editing, festive and opulent colors and tight close-ups of cat eyes and moist lips provide the ambiance for Beyonce’s phone freak fantasies, leaving the viewer with a 5 minute exhortation of pulp magzine-esque visuals. The result is something like a bondage/peep show you would see at Cirque Du Soleil. I can dig it

Can you handle it? The highly anticipated video for Beyonce’s “Video Phone” (featuring Lady Gaga), shot by Hype Williams, is finally out! B’ is working it to the max. And you can definitely tell that it’s directed by Hype. I would’ve liked to see Gaga in more outfits though, and see her go all out like she always does. Maybe when it’s Gaga’s turn for her “Telephone”, where she also teamed up with BK from Texas. Time will tell… Overall, do I love it? I don’t know. But Beyonce is a boss b*tch though!

Filmed in Brooklyn Last week, and produced by no one other than Hype Williams, Beyonce and Lady Gaga star in a visual treat. This Fantasy like video is definetley set to make a statement, with AK-47’s and a whole lot more. This definetley takes us away from the clean cut Beyonce we’re used to. We also see the beginning of the video pay homage to Quentin Tarintino’s 1992 film “Resevoir Dogs”, and Beyonce dress up as the 50’s star, Betty Paige. Lady Gaga brings a more mellow approach, flipping the script on us, ditching her normal ‘Avant-Garde’ costumes. The dance routine is hott, it’s a good look.

Just watched the video and all I can say is FI-NA-LLY, theres so much more substance in this video compared to Beyoncé’s others. In fact really and truly she did not need Lady Gaga to be on this song at all, If anything all it did was take away from the video. It could be because Gaga’s style was so downplayed and Beyoncé’s was how can I put it, ON POINT! It kind of made her look like an extra.

So yeah great video, nothing breakthrough, but it’s very interesting to watch and feel’s very close to the quality we got with the B’Day Album. I LOVED the swimsuit intro, so typical B she know’s how to strut, and the Army General outfit. FIYAH!!

The video for “Video Phone” has finally been released, after much hype and anticipation…

Directed by Hype Williams, the video sees two of music’s BIGGEST stars collaborate. B has done something similar before (with Shakira on “Beautiful Liar”), but it’s definitely cool that Lady Gaga has not only decided to jump on this track, but B’s featured on “Telephone”, a new song off of Gaga’s “The Fame Monster”. So expect another video, featuring the two singers…

Back to this video though, I think the dancers look JOKES with cameras as heads. The set may be simplistic, but with the outfits B and Gaga are rocking and the fact that they’re both in it, accounts for what some may say appears to be a ‘budget’ vid.

ok, so i’ve never been a real fan of this song; it’s alright. but i do like the addition of lady gaga on the song. and surprisingly enough, she looks normal in the video & pretty too….BUT this video is dope. it’s really simple, but dope. love all the little scene changes
