“Live and Direct from the Honky Tonk of Electro, comes three shit-faced extra terrestrials known amongst the elite simply as Donny, Preston and Holly. The trio formed Hyper Crush, a Doo-Hop, Electro, Death-Core super group, destined to be acclaimed in epic proportions.”

 Hyper Crush began with Donnie and Preston. Originally, the name of the band was the Bel-Airs, but the name changed along with their style. They sought a female vocalist to go along with Donnie, and their long-time friend Holly took the job.

Their song, “Keep Up,” has been described as “a dance floor banger, sure to make you dance so fast you can barely see your sneakers.”  They have a Clinton Sparks mixtape out and there is a  Benny Benassi remix of the hit song “Sex & Drugs”. To top it all of they have an upcoming full length album in 2010.

OK so I have never been a big fan of the 80’s especially the fashion. I have resisted this inevitable comeback as long as I could. Then Hyper Crush came along and hit me in the head. I like them original good show great music. Check them out let me know what you think. It also does not hurt that they tend to splash into the 90’s sometimes.

Wenn mir letzte Woche wer gesagt hätte, dass ich auf das Lady Gaga Konzert gehen würde, hätte ich wohl laut losgelacht und den Kopf geschüttelt. Naja, das Leben ist voller Überraschungen und man sollte bekanntlich niemals nie sagen. Aber fangen wir mal ganz von Vorne an: Heute wollte ich eigentlich endlich loslegen und ein paar Zeilen für meine Diplomarbeit schreiben (Oh mein Gott, in zwei Monaten ist Abgabe!), blätterte konzentriert in Büchern, recherchierte online, als mich plötzlich völlig unerwartet meine großer Bruder anrief. Seine Stimme klang kränklich und es stimmte, er und seine Freundin haben sich beide eine aggressive Bauchgrippe eingefangen. Ich ahnte schon, es ging um meine kleine Nichte, Linda, um die ich mich kümmern sollte. Hm, kümmern ist gut – mein Bruder bat mich darum die 13-jährige Linda zum Lady Gaga-Konzert zu begleiten! Okay, wieder nichts mit wissenschaftlichem Schreiben, ab geht’s in den Gasometer!

Um 19h war Einlass, wir waren erst kurz vor 20h dort, weil ich mich mal wieder verspätet habe. Die Schlange vor dem Eingang war ziemlich lang, es ging aber flott voran. Mein Deo-Spray und meine Wasserflasche wurden mir von den Securities weggenommen, na Danke auch! Whatever…Linda wollte natürlich ganz ganz vorne stehen, da blieb uns nichts anderes übrig, als uns irgendwie durchzuquetschen. Es war verdammt heiß und die Halle wurde immer voller. Überall sah ich nur kleine Lady Gaga-Kopien herumlaufen – amüsant! Um 20h15 kam die erste Vorgruppe an die Reihe. Eine Band aus Los Angeles mit dem Namen „Hyper Crush“ von denen ich noch nie etwas gehört habe. Trotz des kurzen Auftrittes von einer knappen halben Stunde, haben sie mich aber schon von sich überzeugen können. Geniale Beats, coole Sängerin, lässige Raps und Melodien….das Publikum war eher weniger begeistert, kaum jemand klatschte! Ich fand die drei Amis echt spitze und hätte gern noch mehr gehört und gesehen. Für alle die die Band noch nicht kennen, hier ein Video von dem Song „Robo Tech“:

Kurz vor neun Uhr sollte die zweite Vorband dran sein, „Gary Go“, aber die auf der Videowall war nach dem Auftritt von „Hyper Crush“ zu lesen, dass es keine zweite Vorband geben wird. Hm, schade! Ich wäre verdammt gerne raus gegangen, aber als ich die Massen hinter uns sah, überlegte ich es mir anders und blieb bei meiner Nichte stehen. Die war übrigens völlig aufgeregt und konnte den Beginn der Show gar nicht mehr abwarten. Um kurz nach halb Zehn ging’s endlich los, der Vorhang fiel und Lady Gaga als eine riesige Discokugel verkleidet die Show eröffnete. Ich wurde von den Teenies an den Rand der Bühne gedrängt, war aber froh, denn so konnte ich wenigstens ein wenig Luft kriegen. Positiv überrascht hat mich, dass Lady Gaga teilweise live gesungen hat, obwohl ich leider sagen muss, dass sie so manche Töne nicht ganz getroffen hat. Sie versteht es aber mit ihren ausgeflippten und sehr kurzen Kostümen, sowie mit coolen Dance-Aktionen eine passable Show zu inszenieren. Aber muss man gleich völlig aus dem Häuschen sein, wenn ein Popstar ein Loch in der Strumpfhose am Po hat?! Ich weiß nicht…Während sie sich ständig umzog wurden den Fans “Kurzfilmchen” gezeigt, in denen sich Lady Gaga als Andy Warhol darstelllte. Naja, nicht wirklich spannend…Die Stimmung im Gasometer war auch so lala, hätte mir mehr Kreischereien erwartet, hm, viele waren damit beschäftigt mit ihrem Handy Videos zu machen, statt abzutanzen. Mir stellt sich auch die Frage, ob Themen wie Sex, Drugs and Alcohol für ein so junges Publikum wirklich angebracht sind, aber ja, was soll’s. Nach einer kurzen Stunde saß Lady Gaga an ihrem abgefreakten Klavier, sang Teile von „Poker Face“ quasi A capella. Es schien aber fast so, als würde sie die letzten paar Minuten der Show einfach “totschlagen” wollen, sang irgendwas daher und dann wurde ihr Megahit “Poker Face” noch mal mit ihren Tänzern gemeinsam präsentiert. Ein kurzes Verbeugen, ein bisschen Gewinke, dann war sie weg. Zugabe? Nein, Lady Gaga hat genug und die Masse beharrt nicht all zu sehr darauf, sie noch mal auf der Bühne zu sehen. Einige verliessen schon den Saal, Linda und ich blieben verwirrt stehen, bis die Lichter in der Halle angingen. Okay, das war’s also, Lady Gaga zu Besuch in Wien!

Mein Fazit: Lady Gaga live zu sehen ist ein Spektakel, aber es schien mir zu routiniert und „abgespielt“. Madonna wird sie aber noch lange nicht das Wasser reichen können, das ist klar. So aufregend wie Lady Gaga gerne sein würde, ist sie nicht. Vor dem Konzert wurde die Gratis-Zeitung „Österreich“ verteilt in der eigentlich der ganze Ablauf der Gaga-Show verraten wurde. Hm, keine großen Aha-Momente also und verdammt noch mal, ich krieg den Ohrwurm einfach nicht mehr weg: P-p-p-Poker Face, P-p-Poker Face…

I highly recommend you do yourself a favor and buy a discounted weekend pass while they’re cheap. Pre-Sale ends tomorrow and you wouldn’t wanna miss out on Franz Ferdinand and Cold War Kids. And if your real lucky you’ll hear Datarock’s cover of To The Rescue from the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. See ya there

I started listening to electro-rap a couple of years ago while I was in LA.  That was when I was first introduced to the music of LMFAO and Hyper Crush.  LMFAO has gained a lot of popularity lately so I’m really surprised that Hyper Crush hasn’t achieved the same success.  These guys probably won’t appeal to hardcore hip-hop fans, but if you need some feel-good party music, you can’t go wrong with Hyper Crush.

The Medic Droid was at the absolute forefront of the Myspace musical movement that I dubbed ‘Scenecore’ in late ‘07-early ‘08.  Unfortunately, after absolutely increda-sploding on Myspace and aligning an incredible touring schedule over the course of two years which included playing with A Cursive Memory, Breathe Carolina, The White Tie Affair, Innerpartysystem, From First to Last, We Are the Ocean, Hyper Crush, and Chronic Future, the band dissolved, citing the strain of constant touring.  The band’s form of next-gen techno/electro trance rock was the perfect accomplice to Breathe Carolina’s screamo-influenced dancecore mix, which, when their powers combined, produced the all-time best club mix in the history of CLUB MIXERY!!!  It’s too bad, had they continued we may have been on the verge of an all-out Scene Kid revolution of the mainstream.  And, really, who doesn’t love egregious amounts of eyeliner and neon hair dye?

I’m officially declaring my love of Holly Valentine from Hyper Crush. I’m bummed that I missed their show last night in San Francisco. This video illustrates the difficulty of being a Latina hipster. No matter how much of an ironic hipster you are, being bilingual and code-switching is still a novelty that will get you mocked. You can see the look of inner-turmoil on Holly’s face as Preston and Donny clown her, it’s burning with angst and conflict.

Seriously though, I love Hyper Crush. I can’t front either, I mess with Mariela all the time when she speaks Spanish on the phone (especially with her mom). She and Holly both can code-switch like seasoned pros; I am merely a humble pocho.

In January, we blogged about our Shutter Shades collaboration with the electro hip-hop group Hyper Crush. With the inclusion of their shades on the main page of our website, here’s a more detailed story of how we linked up with them to create the Hyper Crush Tron Edition Shutter Shades.  

We first met Hyper Crush in the fall of 2007, a few months after we started Shutter Shades. They were already established in the Hollywood club scene and had been performing in Hollywood and Southern California for a while. We were just starting to promote the brand and thought that the Hollywood club scene would be a perfect setting – where music, hipsters, fashion-forward young people gathered. When we first saw Hyper Crush, we had never seen or heard a music group like them. We met them and we instantly bonded with them. They loved our shades and we loved their eclectic style and futuristic music.

After a while of seeing them out in Hollywood and attending many of their performances, we were able to convince them to wear Shutter Shades on stage during some of their performances. Each time, they got a great response from the crowd about their performances and the shades. 

As a result of this observation, we talked about working together to create their own neon edition of the Shutter Shades Trons. They chose two of their signature colors, neon green and neon pink, and off we went.

Stereo Subversion just posted a couple of my reviews from mid-summer. Capitol Hill Block Party, Day 2 and Hyper Crush at El Corozon. I saw Hyper Crush again last night for a feature on Sound Magazine’s website. The band is getting bigger and bigger all the time, which thrilling to witness. They just got signed to Universal, so one of the highlights of the night was having a beer with the band and their entourage in their brand spanking new, totally pimped out tour bus. Congrats to Hyper Crush on all their success!
