MARKHAM, Ill. (CBS) — Northbound Interstate 57 was turned into a virtual parking lot Thursday morning, as crews attended to a four-car pileup in a construction zone near the Tri-State Tollway.

As CBS 2’s Kris Habermehl reports, the four vehicles all rear-ended each other in a work zone on I-57 just south of the Tri-State sometime around 6 a.m.

Several ambulances from multiple southern suburbs responded to the scene, but the number and extent of injuries stemming from the crash was not immediately learned.

The left lane on northbound I-57 was blocked for cleanup from the crash, resulting in what Habermehl calls a “disaster.”

Slow travel times are expected between Interstate 80 and the Tri-State.

CHICAGO (STMW) – A 24-year-old Chicago motorist was cited with DUI following a fatal wreck that left a South Holland man dead early Saturday on Interstate 57 in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the Far South Side.

Keith Albert Green, of Chicago, was cited with DUI, according to Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper Jasen Woo. Further charges are possible, according to Woo.

Woo said Green and three others including a man identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as Andre D. Jelk, 24, of 16707 Clyde Ave. in South Holland, were ejected from the car when it crashed. None of the occupants were wearing seat belts.

About 12:45 a.m. the 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora was traveling northbound at a “high rate of speed” when it lost control and hit a light pole on the right embankment, rolled over onto the embankment and ejected the four male occupants, Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sgt.
Woo said the other two men who were in the car are 20 and 24.

An EMS Plan I response, which sends at least five ambulances to the scene, was called by the Chicago Fire Department.

Inbound lanes were closed for several hours as crews investigated the single-vehicle crash. At about 7:45 a.m. inbound lanes and the 111th Street ramp reopened.

Effective in January, basic I-Pass toll rates will increase from 40 cents to 75 cents, with those who use cash to pay $1.50. Some toll plazas will cost as much as $1.90 for I-Pass.

When asked if the toll hike was breaking faith with motorists who were once promised an end to tolls when bonds were paid off, Quinn says that pledge was made a long time ago and the state needs the tollway expansion now.

“We’re expanding the number of lanes, for example, on the Jane Addams Tollway, there will be an extra lane,” Quinn said Thursday. “There will also be room for mass transit for the first time in the history of the tollway. We’re going to have room for a bus-only lane.”

Illinois Toll Highway Authority executive director Kristi LaFleur pointed out Thursday that for I-Pass customers, basic tolls have not increased since 1983.

Revenue from the toll hike would pay for a number of new projects — reconstruction of the Jane Addams Tollway, reconstruction I-90 from O’Hare International Airport to Rockford for the first time in 50 years, construction of a south suburban interchange between I-294 and I-57 and construction of an additional leg of the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway that still connects neither Elgin nor O’Hare.

Quinn said the I-294/I-57 interchange is also a must-do project.

“We’re one of the very few places in the United States where two interstates cross — they intersect — but they don’t connect, and that’s down at 294 and I-57,” Quinn said. “We’re going to change that. We’re going to have those two connect for the first time ever.”

MARKHAM, Ill. (CBS) – Interstate 57 was shut down overnight for a dramatic rescue following a crash.

The response created a long backup on I-57 near Kedzie Avenue. Both sides of the expressway were shut down.

The crash happened in the inbound lanes of the expressway around 12:30 a.m. Monday. A man driving a car apparently fell asleep at the wheel, and the vehicle veered off the road just north of Kedzie Avenue near a construction area for a new interchange with the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), Illinois State Police said.

The car then struck a tree and landed on an electrical junction box, which is a container for electrical connections used in the nearby construction, state police said.

The lanes had to be shut down to allow a helicopter to transport a female passenger injured in the crash, the trooper said. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with non-life-threatening injuries, he said. Officials also worked to shut off power to the electrical box.

It was not immediately clear if the driver would face citations in connection with the crash, the trooper said. No one else was in the vehicle and all lanes of the expressway are open again as of early Monday.

CHICAGO (CBS) – A car slammed into a carnival ride in the Morgan Park neighborhood Tuesday morning, prompting authorities to shut down an off-ramp on Interstate 57.

The driver of the Jeep Wrangler apparently lost control of the car while exiting the expressway at 119th Street, and went careering right into a carnival that was set up in a parking lot at the intersection with Marshfield Avenue.

Rescue crews were on the scene as of shortly before 7 a.m., and had to remove the hood of the car.

The ramp from southbound I-57 to 119th Street was blocked off.

Fire officials said the driver was extracted and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious-to-critical condition. It was not known if this was the driver, or how many people were involved in the incident.

State Police spokesman David Sneed says the first crash involving an SUV was reported at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The second wreck involving two semi-tractor trailers happened in the same area just north of West Frankfort a short time later.

A 2001 Oldsmobile, driven by a 28-year-old man, lost control, veered off to the right shoulder and struck a fence before colliding with a tree, the master sergeant said.

The only passenger, — identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as John C. Vivetter — was killed.

Vivetter, of 6201 S. Champlain Ave., was pronounced dead at 3:13 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, the medical examiner’s office said.

Witnesses told police the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed, and authorities think alcohol may be a factor in the crash, the master sergeant said. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.

The wreck shut down all inbound lanes of the expressway starting at about 4 a.m., and at least one or two lanes are expected to reopen about 6:30 a.m., he said. Vehicles are using the left shoulder to travel through the area in the meantime.
