~The Preparation~

(Continued from “His gift to Her”)

“You are MINE!”

The prophecy has come to pass…

~

The news of his selection has been announced

His most trusted messengers have been sent to bring word

The Lords of his five regions begin their required journey

They come to pay homage and honor their sacred union

He will honor them with the showing of his choice

She must prepare herself for the presentation

The celebration of a new beginning

~

The passing of the days are quick

She is overwhelmed that the moment has arrived

He will be coming soon to make ready his new prize

Her nervousness begins to grow with each passing moment

As he enters her chamber, he senses her distress

“What troubles you my pet” he softly inquires

“Nothing my Lord” she timidly replies

Without warning, he pulls her to him with fire in his eyes

Holding tightly to her hair, he commands…

“When I ask you your thought, you will not deny me”

“Always remember that you are Mine…” he orders

“I will always be here to protect you”

“Yes my Lord” she trembles… “I will do as you say…”

“What am I to do with you?” he asks

“I must be punished my Lord” she timidly replies

His look tells her that he is eager to confirm her suspicion

~

He takes hold of her with a rough but careful motion

Her breath begins to quicken

Bending her across the bed face down he proceeds to strip her of her clothes

“Are you ready” he calls to her

“Y-yes my Lord” she answers with caution

Crack! His hand meets her tighten skin

She is shaken by the sharpness of his touch

Crack! Crack! His pace quickens growing sharper

Her pain begins to fade… She has turned it into anticipation

Crack! “Thank you my Lord” she calls out

Feeling her wetness growing his hand becomes gentle

Leaning down to her he whispers

“You have done well my pet.. You are ready…”

~

He gently pulls her to him, holding her tightly to his chest

“You belong to me… I will always care for you” he assures her

“Thank you my Lord… I need you to guide me”

Taking her hand, he pulls her to her feet

Slowly caressing her body he speaks “Prepare yourself”

He has chosen her garments “I want you to look your best”

“I am here to serve you my Lord” she proudly replies

He silently departs the room taking his place in the Great Hall

His guest are eagerly awaiting her arrival

The sudden sounds of royal horns announces her arrival

She takes her place beside her Lord

The celebration begins…

Being sick, for a vocalist, really sux ass! I have been up and down for over a month now, and yes I am going to the doc on Friday to get some antibiotics….. Anyway, Steven and I sat down and went through all the Welsh/Celtic tunes and the originals on guitar and percussion. It was pretty cool! That was the first time I have ever just sat down with a drummer like that! It’s a very cool sound and it keeps me honest on my tempo. Weeeeeeeeeeeeee! I only have to lock down my rhythm pattern on Dac’w Nghariad and finish the structure on Greensleeves and other than regular rehearsals before the gig on Saturday I am almost ready, if only my voice would cooperate. I can take being sick, what I can’t take is this damn laryngitis! Other than that we added 3 new songs to the list as of last night, “It’s A Long Way to the Top” by AC/DC, “Taking Care of Business” by BTO and “I Am the Highway” by Audioslave. 3 good song choices and that means I get to take a couple off the set list that we are tired of doing. So, “After Midnight” is gone and possibly “Boardwalk” I am kind of on the fence with that one because it is still a crowd pleaser. With that I leave you with Audioslave….enjoy…..

Rehearsals went good last night. We got through all the new stuff and the entire set list. I decided

Rehearsals went good last night. We got through all the new stuff and the entire set list. I decided to cut “Knockin on Heaven’s Door” off the set list and leave it for a request only song. Now, I know a lot of people like this song, however, we really are kind of tired of playing it and there are so many other great songs out there that we want to play. Another reason that I think cutting that song this weekend particularly is that we are at Barb’s Barr this weekend and one of their regular customers passed away. So this is turning into a celebration of his life/wake. I really want to avoid playing songs that might make anyone cry. I am going to find out from Heather, the owner, what his favorites bands were and we will be dedicating a song to him and his friends.

We are ready to move on and our list of new songs for next week are “It’s a Long Way to the Top” by AC/DC, “Smooth” by Santana, “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream and “I Am the Highway” by Audioslave. When we pick songs we always try to do it democratically, in other words, everyone throws their choices in the hat and we pick and choose from everyone’s choices. I am at this point where I am trying to avoid slow songs because we have too many. So the deal is if the guys come up with slow songs we have to dump one of the other slow songs off the list, which is perfectly ok with me because there are a few I would like to see go bye-bye.

I haven’t had as much time to work on the acoustic project as I would have liked. I have to really get on it next week. I have added a new song to the acoustic set list called “Love My Way‘ by the Psychedelic Furs. I woke up the other day with that song playing in my head and I have always loved it. I found a cool acoustic version on Youtube and with that I leave you with :Love My Way”….

These conversations would inspire ideas when working on the revival of Star Trek, ideas for a new television show we named “The Big Bang Theory”, Kurt Cobain deciding to name the band “Hole”, and me writing the songs “Supermassive Black Hole” recorded by the band I named Muse, as well as ”Black Hole Sun“ recorded by Soundgarden.

I first met Chris Cornell with Kurt, who offered me to him. This was not unusual for Kurt or even Joe Elliott to act as a pimp, who I found were offering me to artists in exchange for promotion by the founder of Island Records and others who wished to keep me quiet and take their revenge. I even briefly woke from the drugged stupor to hear a man talking to Kurt and say, “I hope Chris (Blackwell) appreciates this.”

Fortunately, Cornell turned Kurt down on his offer, but others did not and includes Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, the lead singer and a guitarist for Creed, and many others. This is also why Scott Stapp, with Kid Rock, and Tommy Lee agreed to release of a fake “sex tape”. There was a reason, since I knew the “particulars” about their privates, for example Tommy Lee’s extremely large member. I am surprised Mark Tremonti of Creed also did not partipate in the “sex tape” considering the fact that I know he is even larger than Tommy Lee. Scott and Kid Rock’s sex tape also has Scott repeating a line from “Titanic” which was inspired by Muhammad Ali which I worked on with Michael Jackson.

This same meeting with Cornell, Kurt asked him at some point to temporarily disband Soundgarden for a new band named Audioslave to also record songs I was writing. Cornell would also be asked to record a new theme song I wrote for the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006), “You Know My Name.”

For the 1989 album Louder Than Love I wrote the song ”Hands All Over“.

I named the 1991 album Badmotorfinger inspired by the band Badfinger who were signed to The Beatles’ Apple label the year I was born, 1968. John Lennon wanted to call the band “Glass Onion”, but no one liked the name. Lennon later used the name for one of his songs on the White Album. Instead, The Iveys chose another Beatles-inspired moniker: “Badfinger.” This was a reference to “Badfinger Boogie”, an early working title of “With a Little Help from My Friends,” from “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” For this album, I wrote the song ”Outshined“.

For the 1994 album Superunknown I wrote the songs ”Spoonman“, “The Day I Tried to Live“, “My Wave“, “Fell on Black Days“. Before a street artist in Seattle was hired to become the “inspiration” behind the song “Spoonman” there were many performers I would watch as a kid on television playing unusual instruments, such on Hee Haw, The Gong Show or The Barbara Mandrell Show in the 70′s, and one was a spoonman.

In fact, it was Hee Haw’s “The Gossip Girls”, musical pieces featuring various female members of the cast surrounding a washtub and clothes wringer, that inspired us to work on ideas for a “novel series” to television show named Gossip Girl.

The Beatles always being an inspiration to me, especially while writing ”Blow Up the Outside World” released on the 1996 Down on the Upside album. The composition of the song started with a mash up of “Strawberry Fields Forever” and ’I Am the Walrus‘ but with a slower tempo. On the same album I also wrote “Pretty Noose” inspired by Trent Reznor calling me “Pretty Hate Machine”, “Burden in My Hand“.

Someone else wrote the song “Ty Cobb” which was inspired by the Major League baseball player’s nickname of “The Georgia Peach“. With my mother being from Georgia, I made many references to her with “Peaches and Cream” in Pour Some Sugar On Me, “Peach and Black” in U Got The Look, naming the diner in Beverly Hills 90210 “The Peach Pit”, all of which also inspired Bob Geldof and Paula Yates to give their daughter the nickname “Peaches.

I would also write the song ”Live to Rise” released in 2012 and featured in the film The Avengers.

…………..AUDIOSLAVE……………

I named the band Audioslave which follows a theme from having written the songs “Slave to Love” recorded by Bryan Ferry and “I’m a Slave 4 U” recorded by Britney Spears, and Kurt Cobain deciding to name the band Alice in Chains. For the self titled album released in 2002 I wrote the songs, “Cochise“, ”Show Me How to Live“, “Like a Stone“, “Shadow on the Sun”, Gasoline, and “I Am the Highway“.

Welcome to another edition of Music Monday, with me, Pierre Von ‘Ard. I’m sure you

Welcome to another edition of Music Monday, with me, Pierre Von ‘Ard. I’m sure you’ve all been waiting anxiously for another round of awesome music provided by yours truly.

Music has always been important to me, since a young child. Granted, when I was a child I didn’t really know what good music was but that was because I was young and naive. I mean, you wouldn’t catch me buying a Spice Girls, Britney Spears or Boyzone album in this day and age!

After a day at work there’s nothing that unwinds you more than some of your favourite music and if you’re like me and you’ve literally just been to the dentist due to a broken tooth and told that it’s going to cost over £400 to have a veneer fitted, after paying £96 for a “temporary measure” then it’s definitely music time.

I’ve talked about Chris Cornell much in the past, he is definitely my favourite artist of all time; I’ve been to see all of these bands at Leeds and random gigs such as Noel Gallagher, Limp Bizket, Blink 182, The Fray, Athlete, Muse etc etc and there are only two bands left that I haven’t seen live before, they are Goo Goo Dolls (Oh yes) and Cornell/Whatever Band He’s In At The Moment.

He started out with Soundgarden and were successful until they broke up in the mid 90s, then he did a solo album then moved on to Audioslave which is where I’d first heard of him. Since then Audioslave have broken up and Cornell has reunited with his old Soundgarden brethren. I remember buying the first Soundgarden when I realized how awesome Audioslave were and instantly became hooked. I then bought the rest of the albums and hearing that they’d reformed was great news for me. I need to keep my eye out when they’re next going to be playing in England because I’m definitely going.

As much as I love listening to the awesome sounds by both Audioslave and Soundgarden my favourite thing about them is Cornell’s voice and my favourite music is when he’s performing unplugged. Chester Bennington said he has the most beautiful voice in rock and roll and the above video solidifies that fact.

Everyone has a favourite song by their favourite artist, a song which they hold in such high regard, for me mine would have to be “I Am The Highway” which he wrote while he was apart of Audioslave, when he sings it live and without the rest of the band backing him it sounds infinitely better.

This song along with two others are songs that I usually include on every music playlist I make for the car, the first being the first single which is what introduced me to Audioslave and Chris Cornell to begin with and in my opinion it’s pretty much the best music video ever. The amount it must have cost for all the fireworks would have been considerable.

Just the fact that the beginning of the song builds, builds, builds and then literally explodes into awesomeness.

Lastly the next song that always manages to make it on the playlist is entitled “Show Me How to Live” which somehow holds a strange power over me that seems to encourage me to speed (sometimes over the speed limit *shush*). But isn’t that what car stereos are for anyway? Before I come to a close this week there’s so many more awesome songs by Audioslave that I haven’t listed here, I could just post a long list of videos but you’d never watch them all.

If anything you should listen to “You Know My Name” which was written for one of the recent James Bond films, making Cornell the first non-English person to do so, I remember when it first came out. It’s not often Cornell gets played on the radio but when that was released it was on every five minutes and it most likely brought him a lot of new deserving fans. And of course “Sweet Euphoria” if you want to listen to something depressing but equally epic.

Until next time.

Audioslave is a band that I have not used of late. I find that they were inspirational at times when

Audioslave is a band that I have not used of late. I find that they were inspirational at times when I have needed that sort of thing, however. Some of their songs were about refusal to give up. Others were about outlasting, and still, some were about love. Audioslave was not a band that was perfect for my writing, however, and so I have cut them from my playlists lately.

This isn’t to say Audioslave is devoid of good music—or good messages—simply that they did not fit into the area that my mind needed to shape and formulate ideas for the type of stories I was writing. If I had been writing a story about a motorcycle cowboy riding off into the desert where he finds peace in solitude among the cattle he rounds up while on the bike, maybe Audioslave would’ve fit.

They do have some good songs though, and their bassist, Tim Crommerford, has a plethora of stylistic bass knowledge. I find that their best talents came together for the short time Audioslave did exist, but at the same time, there could have been more.

Cornell’s vocals were great for the style of the band, and I find it useful sometimes when I need to set up a gritty mindset for part of a story. Audioslave is best useful for a car chase or at least a scene where there is a lot of travel at high speed. Cochise exemplifies this with its opening to their original self-titled album. Of their three albums, Audioslave sounds the most badass, but the second album exemplifies more branching out.

When it comes to inspiring lyrics, I prefer Light My Way. The song speaks to the inner artist, coaxing the muse to illuminate the path to a plot or poetical arrangement, much in the same way that the song’s narrator is asking to be led by God, Fate, or simply the universe at large. I find it helpful when a character needs to discover him/herself or get on with their lives. Along the same lines is I am the Highway. This song is more spiritual than most of their songs on the following two albums, but there is a great amount of imagery and perseverance present in the song’s lyrics. It is useful for a character who is a figurative knight or protector. The narrator describes himself as something subtly defined, and always bigger/stronger than first perceived, yet still missing someone very close, whom he must separate himself from.

As far as music goes, Audioslave doesn’t inspire me nearly as well as Dream Theater, Stone Temple Pilots, or even NIN. Nevertheless, they do have some good arrangements and the occasional song that can help with formulation within a story.

Audioslave is the hard rocking, metal edged super group that is ¾ Rage Against the Machine (Tom More

Audioslave is the hard rocking, metal edged super group that is ¾ Rage Against the Machine (Tom Morello, Brad Wilk, and Tim Commerford), and ¼ Soundgarden (Chris Cornell) that formed in 2001 on the heels of the breakup of the afore mentioned Rage Against the Machine. The fortuitous paring of the band was craftily handled by none other than producer Rick Rubin who did indeed produce the first two albums for the band.

Audioslave released three albums as well as received three Grammy nominations between 2002 and 2006. Their sound was evocative of 70’s hard rock with a healthy dose of the 90’s alternative sound. A source of pride for the band was the fact that all sounds on their albums were produced from one of the following sources:

Vocals

Guitar

Drums

Bass

Audioslave Discography:

Audioslave

Out of Exile

Revelations

Their self titled debut was released in 2002 and eventually went triple platinum and was the best selling album for the band. The release was met with mixed reviews as some expected more based on the pedigree of the members while others heralded the band as an adrenaline shot to mainstream rock music.

2004 saw the release of their sophomore album, Out of Exile, which was nominated for three Grammys two in 2004 and one in 2005. Shortly after the release, Audioslave performed a free show in Havana, Cuba before an estimated crowd of 50,000 fans becoming the first American rock ban to perform an outdoor concert in Cuba.

Top 5 Audioslave Songs:

Cochise (Audioslave)

I Am the Highway (Audioslave)

Your Time Has Come (Out of Exile)

Original Fire (Revelations)

Like a Stone (Audioslave)

With the unique vocal prowess of Cornell and the immediately recognizable music of Rage, Audioslave created a distinctive sound that was both innovative and fresh yet at times had a déjà-vu type feel.

Their third album, Revelations, was released in late 2006 amid rumors and speculation of the departure of lead singer Chris Cornell. While initially denied, it eventually came to fruition and Cornell went on to again pursue his solo career while the remaining members of the band reunited with mercurial Rage front man Zack dela Rocha for a one time show at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

With the unique vocal prowess of Cornell and the immediately recognizable music of Rage, Audioslave created a distinctive sound that was both innovative and fresh yet at times had a déjà-vu type feeling.

While they made some pretty great music and filled a much needed musical void during the break up of both Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine, I am happy that all members came to their senses and returned to the musical greatness of the former bands. Rage has been intermittently touring the festivals and Soundgarden has recently reunited and are slated to put on a few shows this summer as well.

Before Diwata invited me to join her and her friends up north, I was listening almost non-stop to nu

Before Diwata invited me to join her and her friends up north, I was listening almost non-stop to numerous versions of Waters Of March and other songs that had ‘water’ in them. Moonrivers, Wave Of Mutilations, I Melt With Yous, Bridge Over Troubled Waters – you get the drift. These songs made up pretty much my entire December working playlist. Therefore, they were the same songs that bridged my last two journeys – the southern one and the northern one.

I don’t know – there’s something in the groove of those songs that somehow echo the laid back air of the shores, and hearing them gave me the feeling that I am ever on my way to the next place. I may be sitting here, now, but I am actually on the move. Or something like that.

When the holidays set on, for the first time, I did not play much carols. The songs I mentioned would not let go. They even invited more songs, journey songs, songs that had something to do with ‘place’ and ‘roads’ and ‘movement’ – which was what had me singing I Am The Highway for the most part of the holidays –

especially since the song sounds even more potent if you imagine it’s God speaking in the chorus. Try it: you take the verses, and let Him take the chorus – it becomes one little weird dialogue. You get to be reminded that there’s just no running away from Him.

Yeah, maybe it was meant to be a dialogue. Maybe those ‘pearls’ and ‘swine’ references were actually biblical. And didn’t the song open with an organ? Musicians have so often employed the use of an organ, which is a church instrument, to connote spirituality.

Well, actually, I don’t know what the hell those Audioslave boys intended. All I know is it made me shed geeky, guilty tears to be imagining that God was nagging me through Chris Cornell’s tough voice, “I am not your carpet ride, I am the sky!”

During the New Year, I happened to see Great Expectations again after so many years. In one of the scenes, where a heartbroken Finn walks the streets (?), a song sung by Cornell was played. It was familiar but I could not recall the title. I felt it a hassle to ask my host to open her computer just so I could Google the lyrics and find out what the title of the song was. I had to wait until the holidays were over and I got back to this desk to finally find out: Sunshower. God will finally get a break from tough-loving me through I Am The Highway, I thought – there’s a new song for comfort.

* * *

On the long road to the north, I remembered a few more road songs – A Horse With No Name by America and Everybody’s Talkin’ by Harry Nilsson.

A Horse With No Name made its real impact on me ages ago, when I heard it played in Hideous Kinky, over the montage where the character of Kate Winslett and her daughter were hitchhiking their way through Morocco to reach the Sufis – meeting strange fellow hitchhikers, stopping on the side of the road as their Moslem drivers prayed, watching the desert landscape unfold before them as they moved on.

This is the best clip I could find with the montage – you will have to wait quite long to get to the song, and the montage is even cut, but if only to give you a glimpse, here –

As for Everybody’s Talkin’, the song was originally performed by Harry Nilsson, off the film Midnight Cowboy. For the longest time, again, when I still worked back in the courthouse, one of the songs that got me through was that song. It was anthemic and it suited my needs – it spoke of not fitting in, and going away where one could belong. That time, I was always in the look-out for such songs.

I preferred playing it rather than listening to Nilsson, though. I just was not so much into its original country feel. I had never been into country. Folk I love, but not country. So, if only to keep hearing the song whenever I wished, I learned the chords and figured out how to play it without the country bouncy feel. I chose a more feminine key, and sang it. I used to sing it daily on my way to my rotten bundy clock enemy –

until Borat came out and made a travesty of it. :/

I shall never be providing a clip of that.

Actually, I loved the sick hilarity of Borat. I was achingly laughing out through the movie – until they dared play my anthem, my comfort, over some scene where Borat was cruising the New York streets for a score, to spoof Midnight Cowboy. I stopped laughing at that point.

I kept a grudge against the movie because of that Everybody’s Talkin’ desecration. Since seeing that scene, all I could remember, whenever I heard or thought about the song, is Borat. In that idiotically stretched underwear. It couldn’t be helped – soon I was asking myself whether my misery, salved by the song, can actually just be equated to the perversions of Borat. It wasn’t fair, eh?

When I got back from the north, during the short work period between my Christmas and New Year break, I sought the two songs. In the process, I came across Madeleine Peyroux’s take of Everybody’s Talkin’ –

and just like that, all my Borat grudge was washed away. It never occurred to me that the song could be given a jazzed up arrangement. Before I knew it, I was already checking out her discography, and found out that she also sang Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen songs. And that she wrote songs too. And that she played the guitar –

Peyroux, referred to by some as Billie Holiday on hi-fi, is highly noted for her choices of song to cover, when she covers. Fleshing out the Leonard Cohen-penned Half The Perfect World, she sings –

“On that fundamental ground

where love’s unwilled, unleashed, unbound

and half the perfect world is found”

Now if I could only write like that. I can’t be just stumbling upon lines like that, and they won’t just come to me, too.

* * *

And just as I have been carried by songs to and fro, I heard something from the bus very recently that took quite a challenge to catch –

All I knew of the song is its melody. And that it’s quite old, maybe from the late seventies. I could hum it in perfect pitch, but I could not make out much of the lyrics. Which made it virtually impossible for me to Google for its name.

I typed the words as I heard them – “sentimental” “flowing through my life again” “fourteen” “’cause there may come a time”.

Nothing came out, because as I found out later, I did not hear accurately the few that I heard. But I had to work on what I got in hand, which brought me to try various possible combinations of that set. Remove the quotes, add the plus sign between the phrases, place ‘lyrics’ upfront. Didn’t work.

I even went as far as singing those words to my fellow writers, who are all practically still kids, and were all still likely unborn when the song probably came out. They either just laughed me off or gave me the look.

I kept typing combinations, though, the song was too good for me to give up. At last, I stumbled upon a search page which had in bold most of the words that I typed. I’ve forgotten the exact combination I typed. All I can remember is that when I sang the words from the link that I found, they all perfectly fit in the melody. I got the song, finally! Next goal, to play it.

It’s one happy song. I could stay in it for a while.

.

Só eu posto no blog, agora morram vadias.

eu quero, :(.

sense, this picture makes none.

até a proxima, vagabundas.

Hello everyone,

Quick update today. Today in practice we focused on our covers of The Stooge’s “No Fun” and Audioslave’s “I am the Highway.” We have “No Fun” down pretty well, and are just breaking into getting familiar with “I am the Highway.” All in all the two hours rehearsing today were rather productive, and we’re happy with the direction the band is going. Our goal is to learn two new covers a week, in addition to creating original material throughout our practices. Our next gig will probably be a party for Independence Day weekend, so we hope to have a filling setlist ready by then.

Hello,

Let us take a moment to introduce ourselves. We are The Horsemen, a new band originating from rural Connecticut. With influences ranging from classic to modern rock, we will be covering a lot of fan favorites as well as writing and producing our own original material. We have Matt on lead vocals, Jahi on lead guitar, Jordan on rhythm guitar, Ryan on bass, and Dave on the drums. We are new as a group so we have a long way to go but we believe the ceiling for our potential is high. The following video showcases a few highlights from our first few days of rehearsals, with a few moments of comedy thrown in for fun. Besides the clips of “Louie, Louie” and “No Fun,” all material is original and improvised on the spot.

On a great note, yesterday afternoon our band played a short set at a benefit for St. Jude Children’s Hospital! We played two of our own songs and covered “Louie, Louie” in its entirety. We hope to have the videos up shortly!

“But the kid is not my son”).

Ok, I have to admit that the first few times I listened to this song (from Audioslave’s eponymous debut album), I found it very cheesy. I mean, the dude is singing about not being a flying carpet. Then in May of 2005, I took two weeks off from work and drove the length of Route 50, a mostly 2-lane highway that cuts through the middle of the US from Maryland’s eastern shore all the way to San Francisco. Because of the highway and traveling references, I decided that this would be my theme song for the trip. After a few days of listening and thinking about the song as I drove, the words began to mean something to me. I have no idea if my interpretation matches Chris Cornell’s intended meaning, but I’d like to think that it might.

Pearls and swine, bereft of me.
Long and weary my road has been.
I was lost in the cities,
Alone in the hills.
No sorrow or pity for leaving I feel.

I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky

Friends and liars, don’t wait for me,
I’ll get on all by myself.
I put millions of miles
Under my heels,
And still too close to you I feel.

I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night

Things are about to get deep here, and I may ramble a bit, so bear with me. You know how sometimes it’s possible to “lose yourself” in a relationship (or at least it is for some people)? To me, this song is about fighting to not lose yourself in that way. Relationships can be damned hard, and one of the things that screws them up the most is the issue of perception. I’m not talking just about romantic relationships here, either. Whether it’s with a mother, a friend, a lover, a brother, a colleague at work… in any relationship, we are to the other person what they perceive us to be. They see something in us that fulfills some want or need that they probably don’t even realize they have (and vice versa, of course). That’s why the first six months of a romantic relationship are so magical: We’re busy forming those perceptions, feeling that need satisfied, and haven’t gotten to the point at which we begin to feel that maybe that person isn’t what we thought they were after all. On the flipside, some people go out of their way to make themselves fit the other person’s perceptions, to be what that person wants, just to hold the relationship together. I think that in most cases, all of this happens at an unconscious level, but it really seems to explain that “We just grew apart” thing, as well as the “I lost myself in the relationship” thing.

As a kinda-sorta student of Buddhism, I realized that what it comes down to is seeing things as they really are. In Buddhism, great emphasis is placed on seeing the reality of things, on learning to realize when we’re projecting our own “story”, our own attachments and aversions, onto an event or person we’re dealing with. If you do that in a relationship, then you’re just setting yourself up to get miffed when that person doesn’t behave as you’ve come to expect them to, or when they have unrealistic expectations for you. I’ve dealt with plenty of this myself, from both sides of the coin. From my father and mother, to my sister-in-law, to the last guy I dated, to people at work who just rub me the damned wrong way… After coming to this realization, I now try to stop myself and ask “Am I looking at the reality of this person, or are my own expectations and assumptions getting in the way and creating this issue?” Even harder when you’re dealing with someone you care for is to ask “Is this person seeing me as I am, or are they wanting me to be something for them that I’m really not?” Before I begin to sound totally sanctimonious here, let me assure you that I don’t always succeed in asking or answering these questions. In any case, even if you can see the reality of the situation, it does no good if the other person can’t.

To me, it seems as if the character in Cornell’s song is someone at that point in a relationship, someone who’s maybe experienced it before and is determined not to again. It’s the ultimate anthem to self-realization and independence. This person would rather be on his own than to lose himself to another person in such a way. He’d prefer to be “lost in the cities, alone in the hills” than to be under someone else’s thumb just for the sake of being in a relationship.

To take it a step further, he even tells the person on the other side of the relationship what’s going on. When he sings “I am not your carpet ride, I am the sky“, he’s saying “Not only am I not just what you see me as being, I’m more than you can even comprehend of me as. I am greater than your conception of me and I will not be boxed in by your expectations.” “No sorrow or pity for leaving I feel.” A bit harsh, perhaps, but sometimes that’s what it takes to get through to that other person.

Again, I have no idea if this is really what the song is about, it’s just what it means to me. For all I know, Cornell was stretching his metaphoric muscles in another direction and I’m totally off-base. Either way, it’s become a personal anthem of sorts. “I am the highway…”, indeed.

If you can, try to get ahold of the demo version of the song that was leaked to the internet back when Audioslave was still just a rumour. Cornell’s vocals on the chorus are much more dramatic. And, yeah, I realize that it’s really Audioslave’s song, but the words are Chris’ so as far as I’m concerned it’s his song (No offense to Tom, Tim and Brad. Sorry, guys.).
