trying to stop me from running.
trying to stop my flight.
pullin at me, pullin at me, pullin me back……
but i have to keep…….keep running,
i have tooo

oh pleeaase dear God please help me run just a little faster.
see over there. up in the sky. thats what i have to do .
run run run …….when i get going fast enough I have to kinda throw myself to the ground but I can’t touch the ground with my body if I do I know it will be over

run run faster faster
oh pleeasseee God help me be fast enough
this is it I’m running out of breath I have to do it NOW!
I throw my body to the ground. at first I’m just a few feet off the ground.
oh god they’re gonna catch me! out of breath I have to get higher I have to get higher or …….or ….or

I jerk straight up in bed, in a cold sweat.
scared.
so very scared.
trembling all over.
crying.
by myself.
always by myself

The memories come flooding back whenever I allow them to. I tried so hard to keep them blocked out for many years. Then I realized that the nightmare I started having when I was a child and continued having for many, many years, was a result of my blocking those memories. I haven’t had that nightmare in probably 3 years, maybe more, Who knows. Noone does. Noone ever did know.
I’ve never felt that anyone would care even if they had known.
So it became another one of those things that sat on a dusty shelf in the back of my mind. But there are others that don’t go away so easy.

Crickey!]

Topic title is relevant in all senses of the word. Well, the site is back to normal. Honestly, there

Topic title is relevant in all senses of the word. Well, the site is back to normal.

Honestly, there must be something wrong with me to get so sentimental over.. well, anything, but especially an anime. I must be either getting old, turning into a woman, or just have mental illness. Granted, those three are one in the SAME OH BURN. I don’t even know how to explain it so I’ll leave it for the end.

So.. Eureka 7, I’ve not really heard much of it, I just knew it was by BONES and was pretty good, other than that I knew nothing of it, I didn’t avoid it like I did with Geass (due to the art style I despise in Geass) I just.. didn’t watch it. Now, if I’d watched this several years ago, my opinion would no doubt’ve been drastically different.. anyway.

So, what’s Eureka 7? An anime, to me it thematically felt like a cross between FLCL, EVA and Cowboy Bebop. WHAT you cry!? Well, I’ll admit I’ve only watched End of Evangelion, but in the end it seems to be a story about growing up, puberty and the like. Much like how FLCL is, FLCL is a tale of a young kid growing up and going through puberty, there’s countless things I could mention that are subtly hidden in the show and cross-referenced – but I won’t.

So, the plot is set on a strange planet. It’s very similiar to Earth aside from stuff called Trapar(or that’s how the sub I watched spelt it) which.. I don’t really know how to explain it, it’s like some energy on the planet which people can use like wind, but it’d be too hard to explain it properly. Anyway, they mention that 10,000 years ago, something happened and humans left earth etc. So on this planet, in the “worst” city, lives a kid called Renton Thurston who’s the son of a legendary hero Adrock Thurston. Via certain circumstances, he ends up on the crew of a.. hmm… ship of freedom fighters? Mercenaries? Terrorists? Well, he ends up on the ship of Gekko state, a group of essentially terrorists who oppose the military/goverment etc and do essentially any job for money – but that’s really just the backbone of the story, the heart, so to speak, would be in the girl called Eureka (which they pronounce like Eruka) who’s a member of the crew.

The best thing about the show, I would have to say, is the character growth between Renton and Eureka, it is realistic in a sense, much more so than anything else I’ve seen, ESPECIALLY in anime. I don’t think I’ve ever really watched anything, anime or otherwise where I’ve watched it mainly for two characters, to see how they progress.

So, that aside, how’re the other factors in E7? Animation? Music? Voice Acting? Pacing?

Hmm, well, here’s a video (spoiler free more or less) that will speak my words for me.

(Ignore the random waves I don’t understand them either)

That’s a sample of the music, along with some of the amazing animation, it’s hard to see on youtube but.. it is very good constantly throughout all 50 episodes, and at times it really is amazing. It’s also nice that, despite being a “mech” anime in some aspects, the combat takes a back seat – when they do fight, it’s more like dancing than anything else. It’s also nice to see them taking advantage of the mech combat for once. I mean, when Renton is fighting them, he doesn’t think about that who he’s fighting, who he’s killing, are real humans inside, people with families of their own.. at least until a certain part of the story, which then brings him back to reality. What is also refreshing is that there are no good and evil, sure, you can argue that Dewey is the “main enemy” or whatever, but he’s entirely justified, infact – if this was our world, I’m sure we’d think what he does is the right thing. The shades of grey aspect of the show is also very interesting, but it’s second behind the amazing (or at least I thought so) character growth and amazing pacing throughout the series.

Some examples? Well, when Renton joins the Gekko-state early on in the series he’s being made fun of alot, being picked on and such, I can sort of sympathise with that – I wasn’t really liking many members of the Gekko-Go. Yet, without some cheap “dohoho sudden change in one episode” style shift (like Geass.) I found myself liking them as the series progressed, much like Renton growing more comfortable around then. Holland especially, my opinion of him changed alot, even at first when I learnt why he was being suck a prick to Renton, I was thinking “even if he has good intentions it doesn’t change the fact he’s being a prick”, but by the end I think I understood it a little better, all the characters in E7 are very human and not 2D (no pun intended) at all.

Renton especially, I imagine he’s a character that many people could relate to, had a tough time at school, no parents, his sister who acted as his mother for so long leaves and doesn’t come back. So when somebody shows him even the slightest amount of kindness, even if it’s unintentional as they don’t know better – he at once falls for them. Renton is the Simon, he is the Naota. He starts off as a kid thinking he’s an adult, but during the series he realises he is still a kid, and that’s by no means a bad thing, and he’ll grow up in his own time. His character also changes, in a realistic manner. I’m thinking that E7 has the best character progression I’ve seen in anything. Video game, movie, anime or book. Well, maybe tied with a few book characters I can think of, but the fact that he’s brought to life by his voice actor adds alot to it.

Hell, the show makes you think, and I’m trying hard to not to spoil anything much at this point, but when he meets Charles and Ray, I was genuinely feeling happy for his character, yet then it makes him choose something that is almost impossible, certainly.

Maybe I just grow a tad to attatched to characters, but I don’t really care considering that’s just a good example of storytelling, when you actually care what’s going to happen to them.

However, despite the above average story, amazing character development and great music/animation, I think there are some people who wouldn’t understand E7, it’s.. there are things you have to experience in life to properly understand it. Of course, it’s something not everyone can do. Not everyone has experienced not having parents, not everyone has experienced being bullied, or being a loner, or indeed, having been in love. Not trying to sound pretentious, I just think that’s a truth about anything. You always relate better to someone if you have experienced similiar situations, I find. As for which of the above I’ve experienced, I’ll leave it to your imagination.

As a last point, I really liked how, despite it being 10,000 years at least into the future, humans didn’t wear silly suits, didn’t have shiny metal houses (sort of) and they were, in general, they same as we are now, only with better technology. I can’t really go into the Scab/Scurve Coral side of the story as that was pretty much all spoilery, but I’ll state that I really enjoyed that side of it too.

Next bit has spoilers, albeit small ones.. sooo.. if you don’t wanna know, skip to the next paragraph down.

Of course, I’ll admit I did have a huge worry that, after watching other great shows such as TTGL and FMA for example, I was worried it would have a GAINAAAAAAAAAAAAAX end. That is to say, let’s look at TTGL, Simon fights against unbelievable odds, to rescue Nia. Yet, in the end, Nia dies anyway. Why? Why couldn’t it be a happier ending? Sure it was sort of happy but.. Nia should have lived. It added nothing to the story, and was one of the few bad points about TTGL. FMA also, the anime that is, why did it have to have such a non-happy or fufulling ending? Not only did they fail at achieving any of their goals (well, Al got his body back but that’s it) they ended up in different worlds.

So, what do I rate E7? It may or may not come as a suprise to you that I’m gonna rate it 10/10. That’s the first thing I’ve rated 10/10 like.. ever. Of course, although this is a review and entirely my own opinion, I don’t expect or even want everyone to agree with me. It’s just, well. I think if something touches you in any way, be it a game, piece of music, film or book, or animation. I think that makes it special in its own way. I’ve not really been touched by anything in a long time. TTGL was amazing for sure, it had likeable characters, amazing action and so on, but, the relationship between characters wasn’t something I understood. Nia and Simon’s relationship was extremely fast in development – I can understand that as it’s an action genre. Yet, more so in TTGL seemed to be the bond between Kamina and Simon, that was something I can’t understand. I’ve never had a “big brother” type character to me in my life, so I cannot understand that relationship. E7, I can understand, Renton’s relationships to all characters, especially Holland, Charles, Ray, yet more so, Eureka.

So yeah I’d give E7 a perfect 10. I can’t think of anything I disliked about the series. Of course, when you finish a 50 episode series in 3 days, and even semi-skip work to continue watching, that tends to happen.

Well, I hope that review came out right, I’m pretty bad at explaining. Never the less I’ll end by saying I’d reccommend it. I can’t comment on the dub but I’ve been told it’s very good for a dub. I would still advise the sub though, simply for the hilarious I………CAN……..FLYYYYYYYY.

Consider this a one off, this is your one chance to see Kaonazhie non raging, I honestly have nothing I think was wrong with E7.. well, okay, one thing. Although the OPs were above average, all of them, they still weren’t great. Oh, the animation was amazing, especially in the second one, the bit where that thing gets blown up? Wow. (2:48 in the below video)

In fairness, OPs are just random J-pop songs that’re vaguely related to the show in some form or another so it’s not really a bad point about the show.. just, I don’t see why they can’t take the Bebop approach and just have a kickass OP. I mean, the show has great music, they should’ve just used a piece of that to the animation, timed it and voila.

Yet still, I only really found myself watching the 1st, 2nd and last OPs, and occasionly skipping them. Now, that’s probably just down to the fact that I don’t really like Japanese j-pop, but oh well. Now I shall post le OPs (all of them) for the sake of being complete. Doesn’t have the EDs but shrug.

Abayo, daichikou, etc. It’ll be back to the fury next time, don’t think I’ve let you off that easily.

Oh I’ll also briefly clarify, I think TTGL, Stranger, Akira and Gintama and so on are AMAZING as entertainment, but when you consider the whole and such. I rate E7 higher simply because, as I mentioned, it did touch me, which none of those other shows have. Not saying TTGL and such are bad I just have to be highly objective.

Maybe I’m just in a mood…but I started off really liking this book and then it just sort of petered (there’s a pun there…stay tuned) out on me.

Peter David’s Tigerheart is a reworking of the Peter Pan (see, told you there was a bad pun connection) story. The best parts of the book are when the narrator gives his asides. It reminded me a little of The Princess Bride movie version. Oddly, the book is listed at our library as Adult, when it could equally be at home under Children’s or Teen. In fact, I think tweens would enjoy it the most.

Since, as you know, I am too lazy to actually write a review…please enjoy this one. Peter David must be writing in his sleep, as he has published more books in more formats than you can imagine. Just take a gander here for example.
