Boa parte das visitas que este blog recebe são, até hoje, destinadas a links de notícias sobre dois filmes em particular: I Can’t Think Straight e The World Unseen. Pois bem, para quem é fã de ambos os filmes, ou mesmo para quem nunca ouviu falar deles, uma notícia séria e importante, que já circulou aqui pelo blog em alguns comentários durante este ano… A atriz Lisa Ray, que estrela em ambos os filmes mencionados acima, foi diagnosticada em junho deste ano com um mieloma múltiplo, um câncer raro que, até agora, como bem frisa a própria Lisa, não tem cura.

Mas Lisa, que é linda em qualquer pose e careta, é acima de tudo uma pessoa de uma energia incrível. E é com essa energia que ela pede ajuda a todos que a conhecem a admiram seu trabalho (ou apenas admiram sua beleza) a ajudá-la a levantar dinheiro para pesquisas científicas sobre o mieloma múltiplo.

Para tanto, Lisa criou um blog seu, em que ela conta seu dia-a-dia depois que o tratamento da quimioterapia começou e lançou um fundo para onde qualquer pessoa pode enviar quantias de dinheiro que vão direto para a pesquisa sobre essa doença. As doações podem ser realizadas até este próximo mês de dezembro.

Shamim Sarif has the amazing gift to simultaneously be an exceptional movie director, screenwriter, and novelist; a talent rarely found.  In "I Can’t Think Straight" she has, with integrity, exposed the soft underbelly of two ancient traditions and cultures (Indian and Palestinian); yet, accompanied with hilarity, political punches, mesmeric songs, and portrayal of tender love between two young women; all paced at a tempo that makes the audience want more.  Her direction of Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth is par excellence, and their acting brilliant. Hats off to the remaining cast and crew as well! The Soundtrack music composed by Ramond Mizra, with songs by Nadine Khouri, and singer/songwriter Leonie Casanova is incredible!

Shamim established Enlightenment Productions Ltd. with Hanan Kattan, who is also her life-partner and Producer of I Can’t Think Straight”.  They live in London with their two sons.

Le gens devant ton ordi, tu sais que j’ai une nette preference pour les filles a la peau tres pâle, pour ne pas dire que je ne mange que de cette viande là… Et bien je m’en vais te parler d’un film, avec des madames dedans, que elles sont un peu colorées, et que exception qui confirme la regle, moi je veux bien les meme a la maison pour faire un scrabble.

Wattention il est 3h du matin, tu l’as senti la critique decousue ecrite pendant le film. Pwak.

A l’origine, j’ai chargé ce film par curiosité, juste pour le titre, sans meme regarder l’affiche ou de quoi ca parlait, jm’attendais a une bouse, et en fait, ce fut une excellente surprise, ca vaut presque un Imagine me & You. Dommage d’ailleurs qu’il soit si peu connu ( j’en avais jamais entendu parler, meme pas sur les sites repertoriant les films gay ), alors qu’il est vingt fois plus savoureux qu’une bouse type My summer of love. Ou ptet que en fait il y etait, mais l’affiche est tellement affreuse que j’ai pas relevé. BREF.

Des le depart le decor est posé. L’histoire va evoluer au sein du milieu aisé jordano-musulmo-anglais. Tu sens le combo arriver.

On nous presente la premiere fille, Tala, d’origine jordanienne. Reputée pour avoir eu 4 fiancés jusqu’a present, tous jetés le jour du mariage sauf le dernier en date. Sure d’elle, charismatique, une belle femme. Elle rejette en bloc le principe de religion, qu’elle trouve dangereux.

Puis on nous presente la seconde fille, Leyla, d’origine indienne. Simple, mignonne as a little girl, un brin timide et reservée, et elle ecrit des fictions ( et elle lit Sarah Waters ).
Nul besoin de te dire cher lecteur, que c’est avec une certaine satisfaction qu’on va rapidement voir les roles s’echanger, un peu trop meme, on est pas en club echangiste, merde.

Premiere scene marquante, le match de tennis. Que si t’as pas encore succombé a leurs regards de biche, c’est qu’il faut songer a consulter pour frigidité. Ou que t’aimes les hommes, et là j’peux rien pour toi.
D’emblée on sent venir leur relation a 20 km, la tension entre les deux en devient presque palpable.  Et toi tu as hate de les voir ensemble, parce que leur alchimie est deja belle. Et leurs soeurs respectives ne sont pas dupes, il sera amusant de voir par la suite combien elles vont manigancer en douce d’ailleurs…

Puis arrive l’inevitable scene où tout derape avec moulte calinous-bisous-dans-l’cou, qui se fait tout naturellement pour Leyla, alors que Tala d’habitude si sure d’elle, semble savoir qu’elle s’apprete a faire une connerie. Ca se lit meme un peu trop bien sur son visage, au point qu’avant meme qu’elles aient fini de se caliner, tu sens venir la cacastorm de force 8 dans pas longtemps. Impression tres aidée par les violons un peu trop aigus en fond, tu sens dans ton ventre que ca va mal finir…

Et pif paf pouf, rebondissement qu’on s’y attend, mere qui s’en mele, familles ne comprendront pas, baisers volés, larmes et coeurs brisés. Le classique.

Et là, il s’est passé 5 minutes, mais t’es soudainement persuadé qu’en fait si, ca va bien finir.
Tu finis meme par VOULOIR que ca finisse bien, tellement elles prennent leur temps pour faire avancer les choses.

Scene de coming out particulierement reussi, avec la juste dose de violence qui parvient presque a t’arracher une larme si elle avait duré 2 minutes de plus. Le deuxieme sera d’ailleurs beaucoup plus drole.

Et là vlan, tout s’embrique, y faut finir le scenario poulet, y’a plus que 20 minutes de film là. Meme si certains elements restent legitimes, la fin s’enchaine presque un peu trop rapidement, meme si ca choque pas plus que ça.

Un bien joli enchainement un peu avant la fin qui te fais des guilis dans le ventre, bon c’est ptet juste parce que j’suis en manque ça maiiiis….

Sans oublier la note d’humour ” Elle est QUOI ? Et alors? Certaines de mes meilleures amies aussi sont libanaises. ” Les scenaristes sont geniaux. D’ailleurs en voila d’autres preuves que je tiens a relever, et que je savais pas où caler dans ma critique :

- Une phrase qui tue prononcée par Tala à sa soeur ” Quel genre de personne te laisse t’investir dans une relation qu’elle sait condamnée d’avance ? ” dixit la nana qui vient de faire exactement la meme chose.

- J’ai egalement bien aimé le ” Aimes t’il toujours autant les comedies musicales ? ” en parlant du frere pédé comme un phoc

- Replique ultime egalement ” – Elles se detestent. – Tu n’as donc jamais regardé L word ? Ca creve les yeux! Elles sont amoureuses. “

La ” sous quete ” si je puis dire de la servante est d’ailleurs assez amusante a suivre.

Pour resumer: un excellent film un peu trop previsible, mais ces previsions changeant constamment, donc en fait ça le fait. Beaucoup d’humour (britannique ET drole) et pas mal de petits clins d’oeil que toi lesbienne tu sauras apprecier ( les bouquins et cds sur le bureau de Leyla par exemple ). Un film a voir sans apriori le moindre. Et je vous presente mes plus plates excuses pour le manque cruel de qualité et de synthese de ma critique filmique. J’ai un peu perdu la main je dois t’avouer.
Moi j’ai beaucoup aimé, j’espere que ce sera votre cas aussi.

taylor swift & t-pain @ the CMT music awards

In plaats van mijn gewoonlijke tactiek van berichtjes typen en op die manier vertellen wat ik ergens van vind en waar ik voor sta, vind ik dat ik voor Femme 2009 ook buiten de platgetreden paden moet treden. Daarom heb ik mezelf en de wedstrijd de afgelopen dagen op verschillende manieren in de kijker gespeeld

Naar aanleiding van mijn eigen persbericht ben ik bijvoorbeeld geïnterviewd door RTV West (beluister het radiofragment hier) en het AD Haagsche Courant (wordt nog gepubliceerd). Het AD plaatste vorige week al een berichtje ter vooraankondiging:

Verder ben ik ook samen met de andere twee finalisten druk bezig geweest met promotie! Afgelopen zaterdag reisden we – inclusief de Smart – naar Zwolle, Amersfoort en IJsselstein. In Zwolle en Amersfoort hebben we – gewapend met flyers – ‘het winkelend publiek’ aangesproken en verteld over Femme 2009. De bedoeling was om hiermee zoveel mogelijk stemmen te werven, maar uiteraard ook om Femme 2009 meer bekendheid te geven. Dat we in Zwolle gevolgd werden door RTV Oost, was dan ook alleen maar positief!

Na afloop van onze promotour begaven we ons naar het FemFusion-hoofdkwartier in IJsselstein, waar we gezamenlijk geïnterviewd zijn door Michelle. Het interview duurt ongeveer 50 minuten en is elk oneven uur te beluisteren via deze link. Voor mij persoonlijk was afgelopen zaterdag voornamelijk heel erg gezellig en een mooie gelegenheid om Eline en Giullitta ook wat beter te leren kennen!

It’s Tuesday.
I’m sick.

So, yeah. I sorta have a head cold, you know the one where it hurts to move your head an inch and it feels like your brain has gained weight and your nose is so blocked you’ve given up blowing it and what formerly was your booming voice is now nothing more than a mere croak or two?

I seriously beleive my immune system has a grudge on me. It’s thinking:

“Oh look, Stevie has just got back from two weeks of school vacation (in which she was perfectly healthy), now look at her, she only has assignments for every single subject (six) due, a stats exam, an eco exam, an english essay test, a trip to the limited time only Monet exhibition, a Wayne Brady concert to go to and house music production all in the next three weeks, it looks like the perfect time to make Stevie sick as a dog cause she’s so totally not busy.”

So yeah, I think I’m going to do a half day tomorrow cause I have piano and I need to pick up some books cause I can’t afford to miss out on class right now – I’ll have to text book learn ):

Okay, enough sob story.

I fell asleep in the bath today, I’ve still got odd lines on my fingers which make it look like I’ve got Grandma hands. That was pretty much the most interesting thing that happened to me today. I just finished watching ‘I can’t think straight’ online, I’ll order it on DVD when I have some more money – Wayne Brady and the Stacyann Chin book has set back my unemployed teenager bank account too far. So anyway, the movie was really cute. I enjoyed it.

Even more enjoyable was Wayne Brady last night, he is so talented! By far, not my favourite comedian, but it was money well spent. His improv skills are amazing, if he didn’t go the showbiz route he could be a very entertaining polititian.

Well, I’ll keep it brief for today – I’m going to go have some of mum’s amazingly yummo mac and cheese and then try to sleep this thing off!

A começar por Terapia D’Urgenza (alguém aí se lembra que essa série ainda existe???). Pois bem, a adaptação italiana para a série espanhola Hospital Central foi abruptamente tirada do ar em outubro do ano passado (justamente depois do episódio do beijo entre a médica Marina e a enfermeira Esther), e a RaiDue finalmente decidiu exibir os 10 episódios restantes a partir de junho deste ano (cara, quase UM ano de delay). Ainda no tópico “médicas-danadinhas”, foi confirmado esta semana pelo spoilerman Ausiello que a Dra. Arizona Robbins está, a partir da próxima temporada, no elenco fixo de Grey’s Anatomy. O que significa, assim espero, muito mais Calzona pela frente!!!

Por último, mas certamente não menos importante, já foi lançado em DVD os filmes I Can’t Think Straight e The World Unseen…mas esqueçam se vocês já estão animadas em adquirir os seus exemplares da Livraria Cultura mais próxima. Porque, por enquanto, os DVDs estão sendo vendidos diretamente pelo site oficial da Enlightnment Productions. Mas enfim, isso significa que em breve eles devem estar por aí, na loja mais próxima…ou não.

A propósito de I Can’t Think Straight, tive a oportunidade de assistir a esse filme há certo um tempo, mas confesso que, como fã de cinema que sou, fiquei um tanto quanto decepcionada e terminei não postando a crítica do filme, o que eu só farei se vocês realmente pedirem.

I Can’t think straight Synopsis

Mas já que estamos em final de ano e as listas dos mais mais sempre fazem muito sucesso nessa época, decidi criar uma premiação própria (com apenas um único e democrático voto, o meu) dos melhores de 2008 aqui no Brasil. Lá vai.

nem tchuns pro preconceito

Sheetal Sheth, uma das protagonistas dos filmes I Can’t Think Straight e The World Unseen, conversou um pouco com as meninas do AfterEllen. Bem, na verdade, o AfterEllen conversou com ela e mais a diretora (Shamim Sarif) e a produtora (Hanan Kattan, também mulher de Shamim) de ambas as produções, mas por motivos estritamente pessoais, não posso deixar de reproduzir o depoimento de Sheetal que, gostaria muito, fosse um pensamento mais comungado pelas atrizes em Hollywood:

Sabe o que é engraçado? É que nunca me ocorreu (que ela estava fazendo um papel gay). Pra ser bem franca, toda vez que tenho que entrar no set e beijar alguém, eu fico tipo “ah que ótimo, estou na cama com um estranho. De modo que um cara ou uma mulher, é tudo igualmente constrangedor. Pra mim, não há diferença… Eu só pensei que era uma história de amor bonita e, ok, é com uma mulher e isso é maravilhoso!

Shamim Sarif’s, I Can’t think Straight, is her 2nd film after The World Unseen (which I unfortunately missed in theaters and netflix says will take a while to be added to my queue).

I really had high hopes for this movie because generally anything queer not made in America or made by non-american  directors generally stand a better chance of breaking stereotypes and not being terribly cliche.

In the upper echelons of traditional Middle Eastern society, Reema and Omar prepare for the marriage of their daughter Tala. But back at work in London, Tala encounters Leyla, a young British Indian woman who is
dating Tala’s best friend Ali. Tala sees something unique in the artless, clumsy, sensitive Leyla who secretly works to become a writer. And Tala’s forthright challenges to Leyla’s beliefs begins a journey of
self-awareness for Leyla. As the women fall in love, Tala’s own sense of duty and cultural restraint cause her to pull away from Leyla and fly back to Jordan where the preparations for an ostentatious wedding
are well under way. As family members descend and the wedding day approaches, the pressure mounts until Tala finally cracks and extricates herself. Back in London, Leyla is heartbroken but learns to
break free of her own self-doubt and her mother’s expectations, ditching Ali and being honest with her parents about her sexuality.   When Ali and Leyla’s feisty sister Zara help throw Tala and Leyla together again, Tala finds that her own preconceptions of what love can be is the final hurdle she must jump to win Leyla back.

The Good:

• Any movie that isn’t about white lesbians is already off to a good start (no offense) but there is definitely a lack of films about middle-eastern communities dealing with homosexuality in comparison  to what’s out there.
• Leyla’s smart ass sister has some funny lines and really its not that hard to look at her for a good part of an 1 1/2 hours.

The bad:

• Very very cheesy dialogue.
• Very predictable plot.  Things seem to work out way too easily for the characters.  Tala gets the accounts she needs to expand her business and Leyla’s book just so happens to get published.  Their families seem easily forgiving of what is perceived to be at least a social stigma and at most a religious offense.  Now that’s not to say I wanted death and destruction and that happy endings in queer movies are bad (there are certainly a lack of those as well).  I should be thankful the two lead didn’t turn out to be serial killers or vampires or both but paired with the dialogue it was just a little to much cheese for me.
• End credits being accompanied by Jill Sobule’s “I kissed a Girl”.  Enough already. I suppose, at least, it wasn’t Katy Perry.
