"Not Exactly What I Mean, But Appropriate Nonetheless"

Usually, I am a proponent of the idea of adding an orchestra into a rock song when the time is right. It can make a song sound very filmic in a good way, it adds atmosphere and a great feel of the epic. Metal and orchestras always go well together, but then, I’ve always had the theory that metal is the closest popular genre to classical (but that’s a whole other article). Take Dimmu Borgir for example.

Sounds just like something out of Lord Of The Rings in the background doesn’t it? Imagine that song without the orchestra, it would sound a lot blander. To change direction slightly, bands such as Aerosmith can use orchestras brilliantly too. Though, with them, rather than sounding like film sountracks, their songs end up getting chosen as theme songs when they use orchestras (I’m looking at you “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing”), but that may be just because they are a bigger and more radio friendly band than Dimmu Borgir.

I’m giving the impression that you need a really thickly produced song already to make an orchestra fit in, but you really don’t. Many a heartfelt acoustic song has moved its way into the category of heartwrenching with the addition of a swelling string section over the top. The classic example of this would be Green Day’s classic “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”, but here’s a unique version of The Beatles “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” from the Love show too, just to show you how strings can be used brilliantly.

A little note on The Beatles here; they are the only popular band I can think of who have made popular rock songs with only an orchestra for backing. I think that’s an achievement not as much for the band, but for the arrangements of George Martin, in his ability to get hit songs for The Beatles without them using their own instruments for a single note. This loops round nicely to the beginning actually, as I had always thought that “Eleanor Rigby” would make a great metal song, but I am yet to hear someone pull it off successfully. Oh well, here’s “She’s Leaving Home” just for argument’s sake too.

Considering all I have just said, how the hell did Ben Folds manage to ruin the single version of his song “Landed” by adding an orchestra? By all rights, this should have made it even more heartfelt and powerful but no, the strings feel tacked on and in the way. The original is bordering on a perfect piano led pop song, why did he feel he had to add strings to the single, the version most people are going to hear, if it ends up sounding like that and turning from heartfelt and charming to overwrought and sappy. Just listen for yourself and form your own opinions on it, I’m going to go back and compare two different versions of The Beatles’ “Across the Universe” to see whether my theories work there.

Num mundo em que a mulherada se empolga quando toca Piriguete na night (juro. meninos, eu vi!), olhar pra história da música pode ser uma saída para enxergarmos se temos salvação. Será que temos?

Preciso dizer qual a primeira colocada de 8 de setembro de 2009? É I Gotta a Feeling, do Black Eyed Peas. A ideia é batida: “todo mundo espera alguma coisa de um sábado à noite”, diria Toni Garrido. Os Black Eyed Peas estenderam isso pra todos os dias da semana. Só isso. E colocaram a Fergie pagando de gostosa (gata, você não nos engana. Até Lady Gaga é mais feminina que você). Mas, confesso: eu gosto da música. Daqui a umas 3 horas eu não mais aguentarei ouvi-la, pois ela toca demais.

Há dois anos, a metade-homem-metade-mulher Fergie também era a primeira colocada. Com a bizarra Big Girls Don’t Cry. Se você nunca prestou atenção na letra (fez bem, aliás), ela diz que sente falta do carinha como um bebê sofre com a falta do cobertor (???). God.

Os anos 2000 estão mais pra Piriguete, mesmo.

A década de 1990 nos deixou pelo menos duas primeiras colocadas que ainda tocam como se tivessem sido lançadas mês passado. I don’t want to miss a thing, do Aerosmith, de 1998, e ela… a mais dançada around the world desde 1996:

Olhando as melhores da década de 1980, vi que 8 de setembro é o dia das músicas grudentas. Checa a primeira em 1983:

Eu juro que não queria colocar aqui. Juro. Mas no topo da Billboard de 1989 estava uma música que toca meu coração. Perdoem-me. Eu tinha nove anos (não é uma das minhas favoritas, tá? sim, eu tenho músicas favoritas do New Kids on the Block).

Pra fechar o post, que já está longo demais, mais uma música hiper bem sucedida até hoje. Since 1973:

Ah, pra vocês concordarem comigo acerca das “músicas grudentas de 8 de setembro”, vejam só a lista: Blaze of Glory, Bon Jovi (1990); Sweet child of mine, do Guns (1988); I shot the sheriff, Eric Clapton (1974) e Help!, Beatles (1965).

Y si en el mundo nada te recordara que se siente tener paz, podes empezar a buscar la canción de este post.
Asi es, después de tanto tiempo de estar sin escucharla, practicamente diría 10 u 11 años, tuve la suerte y el agrado de ver la película armageddon de nuevo, recordandome que existia esta canción.

En aquella época (1998) era muy chico y al no saber ingles ni tener un interés profundo en la música, no me percaté de la maravillosa letra que tiene. Por lo que averigué en Wikipedia, no la escribió ninguno de los miembros de Aerosmith. Sin embargo, creo en que no existe banda mas perfecta para interpretar la canción. Bueno, por lo menos quien la canta. Simplemente con otra voz no quedaría tan bien. No me gusta Aerosmith, salvo unos pocos temas. Pero tengo que reconocer que con este se pasaron, especialmente Tyler, que le pone toda la onda, cantando con el alma o quien sabe que.

Puedo afirmar que la letra es la mas terrible que leí hasta el momento. Es la versión mas acertada EN PALABRAS, de lo que siento.

Tente descrever um relacionamento de cinco anos e meio. Um namoro que começou quando você era apenas uma menina e continuou crescendo com o passar dos anos, assim como você. Hoje, já mulher (pelo menos teoricamente) você olha para trás e pensa em tudo que já passou, tenta espalhar os fatos ao longo de todos esses dias e só então percebe como a jornada foi longa…

Eu namoro desde os meus 15 anos e hoje, no auge dos meus 21, ainda compartilho meus momentos com o meu namoradinho da escola. São cinco anos e meio (que vão ser completados no próximo dia 20!!) de tantas emoções. Momentos muito ruins, momentos de muita tensão e muitos, mas muitos mesmo, momentos de alegria. O importante é: todos foram passados lado a lado.

A verdade é: era uma adolescente quando conheci o Luiz, e decidi que nossa história tinha que ter uma música. Teimei, teimei, demorei, mas enfim escolhi. Alguns meses depois decidi que seria I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing, do Aerosmith. O Luiz não se opôs, claro, e isso ficou pra trás, como muitas das minhas manias.

Mas subconsciente é uma coisa complicada, e toda vez que eu ouço essa música penso em mim e no Luiz, então realmente, para mim, é a nossa música, e sempre vai ser. Já que tenho essa série decidi que seria perfeito colocar esse clássico aqui, apesar de não falar só de mim.

This weekend, number one hubby and I “celebrated” our 17th wedding anniversary. Blink. When did that happen? Not really sure – but it’s been a good ride. I still like him a lot and he continues to put up with me. And ever since I started blogging he has officially recognized that I can be funny. We really make each other laugh and smile. We probably have at least another 17 years in us.

This is the song that makes me think of him – it’s I don’t want to miss a thing – by Aerosmith.

I say “celebrated” because number one hubby went to work, Bear had a track meet, we hosted two visiting athletes from Katmandu, Flower and Angel went with me to a craft fair – it was a little “un”anniversary like.

And if you know me at all, you’ll understand that I am not exactly all over hiring a babysitter in a foreign country to watch my kids so that hubby and I can pay way too much for a dinner out. Yeah, Laxmi made butter chicken for us and I am good with that.

There isn’t really much that either of us wanted, so gift giving pretty much went to the back burner, too. I am also good with that. I know the men are rolling their eyes here – but really – I don’t like gifts just for the sake of gifts. Hubby is generous anytime I want something – I don’t have to wait for anniversaries and birthdays. See how that works? It’s better that way.

Number One Hubby loves fresh flowers and he is especially fond of lillies. I did not want our day to go unnoticed so I got him these. They are from the flower stand in our neighborhood and they are really beautiful.

And so began the parade of flowers and gifts. The war of the roses.

Number One Hubby’s office sent this cake. It came one day early, so I had to promise that we would cut it at midnight. We cut it and I am sure it was midnight (somewhere). It was delish.

Then came this elephant pot from Number One Hubby’s assistant. It is tres cool. Number One Hubby had actually been looking at these – we love it! (Before you fall out of your chair, remember that the swastika here is an auspicious symbol – it has nothing to do with all that Nazi hate baloney. It is a lovely symbol here and it is often drawn out in fresh flowers. So, just to be clear, we are not joining the Third Reich – we are just being wished much love and happiness.)

Then came these from our driver….

Number One Hubby’s admin staff sent these – yep, we ran out of vases, glasses, and anything that could hold liquids, so these are in the blender.

But before all of these arrived, hubby decided to surprise me. He ordered 17 vases and 17 dozen roses. Yep, you read that right. 17 of each. While, I was dropping off our visiting athletes and Bear for warmups at the track meet, Number One Hubby, the real Flower, and Angel worked their little florist fingers to the bone. They arranged 17 dozen roses all throughout the house.

Some of the vases are lined with rice paper that creates this very artsy mosaic look. Hubby says the paper will eventually dissolve – but until then – fabulouso!

And yes, you are absolutely right, I am very lucky!

In Week 6 of competition, the Top 7 finalists performed songs from films. In an American Idol first, the judges used their one time only “Judges Save” to rescue Matt from elimination Wednesday night.

Once again.  Adam continues his roll as the contest’s most exciting, versatile, consistent singer.  Although, not as “iconic” as his Motown Week or Birth Year Week performances, his rendition of “Born To Be Wild” was by far the evening’s highlight.

“Everything I Do (I Do It For You) by Bryan Adams (“Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves” 1991)
Anoop Dogg has cemented his status as a “ballads specialists”, which is good and bad.  He tends to stumble when he picks up the tempo.  But, with that said, his rendition of this song was absolutely beautiful without being schmaltzy.  His control and finesse with the melody were noteworthy.  Great job.

Over all good.  I feel the song got a little unwieldy, especially toward the end.  It is a testament to this girl’s solid technique that she was able to maintain control and pitch, but it was definitely a “white knuckled” performance for me.

The beginning of this was not good.  He was unstable, seemed nervous and unsure.  But as the song progressed, he found his footing and I have to say the second half of the song was the best singing he has done to date.  The end was gorgeous.

7:07: Allison Iraheta is singing “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” (The theme is music from movies.) Q thinks she’s gonna do a great job. She shrieks about watching “you” sleep. The judges talk about spicy sauce (because she’s Hispanic?). Simon says she’s the girls’ only hope, disrespecting Lil.

7:15: Anoop Desai does “Everything I Do I Do For You,” and I realize I’ve long thought of it as the same song as “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” Just move the words around a little and get your instant movie generic love song. Q wants Anoop to growl out the words. Q punches the air to demonstrate and, with that big jaw of his, he looks like Popeye. Anoop has a nice tone to his voice and he’s modestly soulful.

7:20: Q only “got a taste” of Adam Lambert, who’s doing “Born to Be Wild,” and he’s excited about tasting the whole thing. Adam is going to take the world in a love embrace. I just love this guy. Very thrilling and cool performance. (Hey, did I ever tell you I saw Steppenwolf in concert in 1970?) Simon tries to criticize him by saying “It was a little like watching the ‘Rocky Horror’ musical in parts.” And Adam’s all “I love that musical!”

7:29: “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman.” Incredible. I’ve also long thought of that as the same song as “Miss a Thing”/”Everything I Do.” Is everything by Bryan Adams? Matt Giraud, the boring guy who’s supposed to remind us of Justin Timberlake. Q tells him to enunciate. He’s pretty bad.

If this is retirement, thank God for social security.

One more note: tMiM is brewing an American-Idol-As-Social-Indicator post, featuring Adam Lambert as The Next Freddie Mercury, but in the meantime, know that Mr. Lambert is the real thing. Really. His natural vocal abilities are beyond belief, and his stage presence is developing while we watch. Producers should end the season now, cancel any future broadcasts, and declare him the Last and Only American Idol.

Tonight’s episode of American Idol was dedicated to movie music. Quentin Tarantino was the special guest guide. He has brilliant taste in movie music – almost all of his soundtracks are spectacular. So I definitely agree with the choice of asking him to be a guide this week. I just wish he could have helped the contestants pick their songs.

Overall, the night was just alright. I never thought I was much of a movie snob or a music snob, but maybe, just maybe, I am a bit of a movie music snob. There are so many brilliant songs to choose from. How could the producers allow one cheesy ballad after the next?

There’s only one contestant that chose what i would consider a brilliant, must have, and must listen to over and over again movie song. That was Kris, who sang Falling Slowly from the movie Once. Hands down, one of the best movie songs of all time. He couldn’t quite bring the utter and complete that Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova do in the original, but it was definitely a respectable version, particularly the middle of the song.

Alison is probably my favorite contestant. She sang a great song: I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith, from the movie Armageddon. Dig her and the song, but it was not my favorite performance of hers. The rehearsal with Tarantino was better than the live performance.

Anoop sang (Everything I Do) I Do It For You by Bryan Adams from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. The boy can actually sing but come on, could you choose or a more blatant movie song. I’ll pass. This was number one for like a year and a half. I have heard it too many times to want to listen to it again.

Not to be out Bryan Adams’ed or out cheesed, Matt sang Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman from the movie Don Juan Demarco. I just can’t do it. Decent version of the song, but I could not get into it. Maybe if he had worn a zoro mask like in the video.

But we’re not done yet. Danny busted out Endless Love by Lionel Richie (and Diana Ross) from the movie of the same name. It reminded me of cinnamon oatmeal – not bad but kind of bland. He needn’t the duet to make it real. The harp wasn’t person enough. Wouldn’t buy it, wouldn’t rewind it, maybe would ffwd it. The video is worth seeing though. Brooke Shields was gorgeous in this movie.

If I were a betting man, I would have put a hefty sum on Lil Rounds singing the entire soundtrack to the Bodyguard. Fortunately, she did not. Unfortunately, she ruined the Bette Midler classic (yes, I said classic) The Rose, from the 1974 film The Rose.

What you could expect was that Adam was going to try something weird. He took Born to Be Wild (Steppenwolf’s classic from Easy Rider) and made it tamer in a frenetic crazy over the top indulgent sort of way. Last week’s Mad World was brilliant, but I am over the shrill. Hate mail press send now.

I can’t imagine a meaner gift than to buy somebody you hate tickets to see this band live.  The Police are only good for two things.  Writing articles about how much they suck, and getting dangerously drunk.  This band should only survive on your computer, heard only when playing the infamous “Roxanne” drinking game.  Hey Sting, stop dating prostitutes.

Verdict: Why is this band popular?

 Aerosmith

A bunch of ballady songs that seem to be faked by the clownish lead singer Steven Tyler and the oversized guitar slangin’ Joe Perry.  They don’t rise above anything other than “rock.”  Aerosmith is just Journey but with a dirty heroine addiction.  When’s the last time you ever really just fucking craved to hear some Aerosmith? They’re like a grilled cheese sandwich, if it’s in front of me I guess I’ll eat it, but you will never ever see me order it.  Aerosmith doesn’t do anything so special for music that there isn’t already another band that can do it better.  It’s time they start realizing this and act accordingly…with the humility that contracting Hepatitis C naturally brings.

Influence: True, without Aerosmith and “Armageddon” none of us would have had that romantic arms-length dance in the 7^th and 8^th grades.  So for that, we are ever grateful and always willing to sarcastically and overdramatically sing along with “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.”  But other than that, there are plenty of other bands that easily pick up the slack in the eradication of Aerosmith.  But if you questioned any astute microphone, it would tell you that the influence Aerosmith had on scarves and microphone fashion in general cannot be overstated.

Verdict: Why in the fieriest hell would anyone have purchased “Guitar Hero Aerosmith?”

With the passing of my Mother Gabrielle Godling, November 11, 2008 we are all saddened and miss her so.

At this time I am looking forward, and  feel  extremely grateful, to have the opportunity to continue her legacy.

I hope to fulfill her wishes  and desires to keep her business alive and growing.

My Mother loved her business and associates.

She believed in helping others to reach their dreams if they were willing  to put forth the effort,
and I share her successful business philosophy.

I have ten years leadership experience in direct marketing, retiring a leader in 2006.

I have a wonderful blessed life being married to my husband twenty-four years, and we have  two beautiful daughters.

I look forward to helping each and every one of you obtain the goals that you set for yourself today and moving forward.

Teresa and her family, Chris, Katy, and Kary, are  enjoying a trip to Florida this  week, of November 24th,  that was generously provided for by her Mother.  They planned to meet in Florida for a family reunion.

Oh Great Master Spirit, I hold your power and grace to take responsibility for my behavior,

now in the present,

and anytime in the past,

that does not,

or has not served me or others in the highest way.

I recognize that many times I fall short

of doing my best,

and I behave in ways that do not represent

the great loving being

and spirit that I was born into this earth with,

thanks to your presence in my life.

Through Your love,

Oh Great Master Spirit,

I am able to let my light of divinity shine forth,

illuminating my choices

and allowing me to act as a divine instrument

of Your Great Spirit.

For those whom I have hurt throughout my life here on earth,

I extend my love of sincerely asking for forgiveness.

I honestly did not understand

the truth, which is that “what goes around, comes around”.

“What you

reap, you sow”.

Why was I so blind?

Why did I not awaken sooner?

For those who have hurt me,

I accept their divine love,

knowing they “know not what they do”.

I sincerely ask for Your Divine Spirit to permeate their inner being

as you have done mine,

and, if it be Your will,

I ask that “they” also receive your great and mighty divine love

within their being.

that You so graciously gave to me

when I drew my first breath on this earth.

I ask that You continue to bless my every waking moment

to allow me to always be fully aware of my responsibility

to myself and others

My name is Teresa Sullivan.

I am the oldest daughter of Gabrielle Godling, (Beverly Jane Clarkson).

I apologize for not getting in touch with you sooner.

Although I do not know you, and you have not known me,

I want to take this time now to sincerely Thank You

from the bottom of my heart for your love for my

Mother, and the desire to honor her memory in the

best way you can, by expressing that in a memorial

conference call this evening.

My Mother truly touched so many lives, certainly

much more than I ever realized, which is always

the way it ends up. She never ran around bragging

about the "good that she was doing", nor the

recognition she was receiving.

I do realize now, and would like to express the fact,

that although every single person she touched, feels

that she has "saved" them, the reality is that they are

the ones that "saved" her, each and every day, and

allowed her to continue living for as long as she did.

The statement of "give and you shall receive" truly

is what my Mother's life embodies, and the fruits of

that life can be realized on your conference memorial tonight.

I ask you always remind each and every person you talk

to of this fact, for it is so true, and not just a cliché,

that the joy in my Mother's heart was passionate, and came

from other's happiness. Whenever she heard their expression

of wellness, happiness, completeness, joy, or healthiness,

her heart ran over with joy, and although they weren't aware,

it brought her strength that day, to keep her going to the next.

Because of them, I enjoyed her for a few years longer than I

would have otherwise.

I would like you to listen, if you could, to the Celine Dion's

song "Because you Loved me". Please do so before your

Memorial to her tonight. This is what says everything, to

everyone she knows worldwide.

I loved her, she loved all of us.

Gabrielle’s Testimony

When __________________ was introduced to me in October 2005

my health was below the pits, never before in my life had my

health been this bad…. I was not long to be on this earth…

….. my finances were also below the pits, so much that I

had to borrow the money to order the ________________.

After signing up, I immediately got on the conference

call and heard people whose lives had been dramatically

A pesar de ser conocidos como “Los chicos malos de Boston“, lo cierto es que las raíces de la banda no se encuentran en el estado de Massachusetts, sino en el vecino New Hampshire, concretamente en el pueblo de Sunapee. Allí fue, a orillas del lago Sunapee, donde comenzó la historia de Aerosmith en el verano de 1970 con Steven Tyler (vocalista), Joe Perry (guitarra), Tom Hamilton (bajo), Joey Kramer (batería) y Ray Tabano (guitarra) —quien sería sustituido al cabo de poco tiempo por Brad Whitford—, como protagonistas. Una vez formado el grupo, este se trasladó en busca de oportunidades a Boston, lugar en el que compartieron apartamento y comenzaron a hacerse un hueco tocando  en  locales nocturnos. No fue hasta 1972, durante una actuación en el club Max’s Kansas City de la ciudad de Nueva York, cuando llamaron la atención de una  discográfica, Columbia, lo cual les reportó el billete para grabar su álbum debut. Aerosmith vio la luz un año más tarde, y su fusión de Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues y R&B presente en temas como Mama Kin, Walkin’ the Dog o la célebre balada Dream On fue comparada  con el estilo de The Rolling Stones, y no sólo con el estilo. De hecho, la dupla Tyler-Perry fue bautizada  sarcásticamente como “Gémelos tóxicos” en alusión a sus adicciones y al nombre autoimpuesto de los satánicos Jagger-Richards (“Glimmer Twins”).
