Approaching the final stretch of school, I find myself having more and more time to procrastinate. It’s not that I have loads of free time — it’s that I’m too ADHD to focus on one aspect, like my term paper!

And from all the distractions, I find something new about myself: Katy Perry is my guilty pleasure…

I came across a jazz version of “I Kissed a Girl”, which sounds way better than the original. Okay, that’s like saying I enjoy apple juice over Sunny-D, so I take it back. I enjoy both.

A little while ago, Katy Perry released her MTV Unplugged Sessions CD/DVD. It’s a series of live acoustic versions of some of her songs, as well as a cover of the Fountains of Wayne song “Hackensack.”

Overall, it’s a solid performance–nothing too out of character, nothing too new. Most of the songs she performed were already relatively “unplugged.”

Track-by-track:

1. “I Kissed A Girl” – The first half of “I Kissed a Girl” has been remixed, and while it’s decent, it feels inferior to the original.  The melody’s been played around with a bit, and when she returns to the original in the second half of the song it feels like she’d been holding back for the first half.
2. “Ur So Gay” – Katy doesn’t venture far off the original for this one.  Vocally she does a good job, although she gets a bit nasally at parts (which is pretty much true for the whole album).  It’s a little rushed-sounding after the few changes that she did make, and it feels like she should have slowed it down a bit instead of trying to keep up to the speed of the original “Ur So Gay.”
3. “Hackensack” – Easily the best song on the album, Katy’s version of “Hackensack” is essentially the original with her vocals.  It’s a beautiful song, and Katy does a great job vocally on it.  It’s definitely worth a purchase, even if the rest of the album isn’t.
4. “Thinking of You” – Wasn’t “Thinking of You” kind of unplugged already?  Even so, Katy ventures away from the original arrangement quite a bit, and this version may even be better than the original (which was unintentionally hilarious as opposed to sad and pretty).
5. “Lost” – “Lost” is a great song, and it translates even better into an acoustic version.  This or “Brick by Brick” are probably tied for the second-best song on the album.  Once again, she gets a little nasally on this one.
6. “Waking Up in Vegas” – Sadly, this version doesn’t quite stack up with the original “Waking Up in Vegas.”  The chorus sees her joined by a crappy male backing vocal, and the whole song feels a little rushed.  This might be the worst song out of the session, despite the original being one of her best songs.
7. “Brick by Brick” – “Brick by Brick” is a beautiful song, and it, like “Hackensack,” is a new track for the session.  It brings the whole session to an eloquent close, much like “I Think I’m Ready” ends the iTunes version of One of the Boys.

Is the album worth a purchase?  The songs are pretty hit-or-miss.  “Hackensack,” “Lost,” and “Brick by Brick” are undoubtedly worth buying, but the others are either so close or even inferior to the originals that they feel superfluous.  Still, since each of those songs cost $1.29 on iTunes, it’s probably worth it to just pay a little over double that and and get the whole album, which includes video versions of the performances and an interview with Katy Perry.

I’ve been wanting to put a music video on here, but unfortunately, it doesn’t go with the topic of my blog.

But, I’ve been inspired by my previous post. I Googled “songs about lip gloss”, and I didn’t really have a choice. Unfortunately, no one sings about makeup that much anymore.

So, I chose the lesser of two evils: I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry.  Enjoy!

Last night I went to my first show since I moved to Vegas. KÀ is a show by Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand. Created and directed by Robert Lepage, the show and the theater cost $220 million to develop.

Even though I was pretty lost as far as the plot was concerned, The production and theatrics was AMZING. KÀ lacks a conventional stage with a permanent floor; instead, two giant moving platforms and five smaller lifts and platforms appear to float through a bottomless space. A narrow boardwalk separates the audience from a deep abyss where the stage floor would normally be. From the stage level of the boardwalk up to the high grid is 98 feet, and the pit drops 51 feet below, amounting to a total of some 15 stories from the highest ceiling grid to the lowest floor level. The opening width and depth of the performance area are each 120 feet. This enormous performance space is reconfigured with each scene change by the complex movements of the show’s lifts and platforms.

Overall the show was DANQ and would highly recommend seeing it while you are in Vegas.

Max Vernon is a god. Well, not really, but damn his music is beautiful. Best known for his doo-wop cover of Katy Perry’s ”I Kissed a Girl,” his range extends far beyond a superficial Auto-Tune.

Powerful vocals blended with a command for the piano give Vernon something really special. And when I say special, I mean sexy.  “When Your Body Breaks” is not only spectacular in terms of composition, but filled with insightful, passionate and inspiring lyrics. So kiddies, next time you want to climb a mountain, quit binge drinking at frat houses or get caught ahead in all your classes — listen to this song, and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

It is 2008 and the airwaves are bursting at the seams with dance/pop; synthesizer led anthems that would more befit an under 21s in Ibiza than Virgin Radio drive time. The live sound of the pop/rock of yesteryear is rapidly being replaced by high tempo loops and throbbing bass lines reminiscent of the late 90s ‘Euro Pop’ trend; even Britney Spears has abandoned her patented pop production and jumped into the carbon copy tech-pop machine and you wonder how the acoustic sounds of James Morrison and the Kooks even get air play. Then in the midst of repetitive, synthetic loop purgatory and RnB too insipid to digest, there is Katy Perry.

Production wise, the debut album of singer/songwriter Perry, One of The Boys, leaves little to be desired, a lot to be left behind. Seconds into its namesake first track it is clear that, despite what her first few singles and odd dress sense may have led you to believe, Perry is not nearly as ballsy or as edgy as she seems set to prove, a theme that stays throughout the album. By the second track, 2008’s anthem I Kissed a Girl, the vocal production alone is so sickly sweet it will leave you reaching for a bucket. Although the lyrics may be comedic tongue-in-cheek and the overall melody of the track is undeniably catchy, the overproduced, distorted guitars and tumbling bass line, together with far too clean-cut vocals are presented in a plodding fashion when really they feel like they should be stomping.

I Kissed a Girl ends and I am seriously considering switching off altogether, because surely, if this is like most albums, then that was the highlight and what is to follow will be an extra thirty minutes of substandard album fillers. Then something beautiful happens. Waking Up in Vegas snakes into a bright guitar riff alongside Perry’s slightly more relevant vocals, bursting into a completely gratifying assortment of road trip ready, college chick-rock and echoing melodic hooks from early Avril Lavigne, I start to think that maybe this is not ‘most albums’.

Thinking of You fails to disappoint. The sultry power-pop ballad starts off with an Alanis Morisette on a bad day type choppy vocal and acoustic guitar accompaniment, which compliments Perry’s quirky stylistics beautifully. The production begins to sit perfectly as, not hindered by over conscious lyrics or a mediocre vocal, Thinking of You simply exists as pure pop indulgence rather than an over exuberant monologue undermined by the irrelevance of the melody keeping it afloat.

Mannequin and Ur So Gay re-introduce Perry’s flippant lyrics, however, where the title track and I Kissed a Girl seem to lack sincerity and believability, these tracks seem to take themselves far less seriously and with killer hooks and laugh-out-loud innuendos (‘you’re so gay and you don’t even like boys’) are the ironic, male bashing pop/rock songs usually associated with the likes of P!nk. Ur So Gay seemingly brings out the ‘artist’ in Perry as she ditches the typical punk rhythms and popular chord structures in place for an almost mockingly dark, piano led, nursery rhyme-esque anthem. A lounge-like brass section ignites a punchy staccato piano over the lyric ‘you’re so gay’ on the chorus, which by the end almost snowballs into a chant. Desp

ite its questionable lyrical content, Ur So Gay is as infectious as head lice in a school playground. This makes way for the equally as catchy second single Hot N Cold and cheeky chick-rocker If You Can Afford Me. The rest of the album echoes previous tracks, too little to bore, but enough to be palpable in their own right.

ised as a foray into modern music, however, this selection of exquisite pop flies the flag for classic popular code and with lashings of modern trends fits in nicely with current music without succumbing to the trends itself. Much like Kelly Clarkson’s 2004 triumph, Breakaway, One of The Boys is seemingly chained together with tracks that have s

taying power. This will ultimately see it perched firmly in the charts when today’s dance/pop hits get banished to summer sale hell. So as the synth’ hits come and go, Perry’s contagious writing style and distinctive vocal (though sometimes lacking in technical prowess) will continue to be the breath of fresh air in a stifled industry, which leads me to wonder, could Katy Perry be the unlikely pop saviour we’ve all been hoping for?

La mujer con los ojos más grandes del pop hace por fin su debut en este blog. Y esta vez no se trata de una payasada de las suyas (tirarte encima de una tarta solo es gracioso si estás gorda), sino de la poquísima vergüenza que tiene la tipa al grabar un Unplugged. Debe ser que los regalan, porque no se nos ocurre nadie menos adecuado para un concierto acústico. Bueno sí, Britney, pero ella cree que las guitarras son atrezzo para hacerte sesiones de fotos fálicas cuando tienes 17 años.

En defensa de Katy, hay que decir que aunque no lo parezca ella compone sus canciones. Eso quieras que no la sitúa a la cabeza de la nueva era dorada del pop que estamos viviendo. Teniendo en cuenta que la única artista blanca en ser #1 en USA durante los 2000 fue Gwen Stefani (que a ver cuando pasa de No doubt y vuelve a vestirse como una mujer), era muy necesario que un nuevo grupo de putillas devolviera el chochi-pop al lugar que le corresponde (nuestros corazones). La diferencia entre las cantantes blancas y las negras es que estas últimas solo tienen una actitud posible: navajera adicta al leopardo. Las blancas tienen menos sentido del ridículo y enseñan las tetas con más facilidad, por lo que su reinado es imprescindible.

A pesar de que la sombra de Lady Gaga es alargada, es cierto que Katy tiene buenos temas, aunque carezcan del halo de acontecimiento que tienen Just dance, Poker face, etc, etc. De hecho Perry es mucho mejor letrista que Gaga, y no solo porque no abusa de cualquier onomatopeya que se le ocurre, sino porque utiliza frases subordinadas. Tiene unos video-cortometrajes bien majos y muchas ganas de ser una estrella de verdad, para lo que se ha construido una estética propia, y ha sabido explotar su vis cómica. Probablemente su falta absoluta de sentido del ridículo hiciera que la gente le tirara chetos en los pasillos del instituto, pero lo bueno de estar maciza es que puedes ser una payasa integral y seguirán queriendo acostarse contigo. Eso, sumado a su obsesión por ser Dita Von Teese (no entendemos quién querría ser algo tan desagradable), convierten a Katy en una mini-estrella con posibilidades, y mira que tenía un rollo zara trafa intolerabe al principio. Claro que con esas tetas lo único que podía hacer en su vida es hacerse puta o pin-up, y Christina Aguilera ya ha acabado con las existencias de todas las peleterías de Los Ángeles.

El problema que tiene es que (como todas las verdaderas estrellas) no tiene ni zorra idea de cantar, y encima tiene la desfachatez de hacer una versión jazzy de I kissed a girl, esa canción que en realidad es insoportable y que ensombreció el verdadero TEMAZO de ese disco, Hot ‘n cold. Alguien le ha hecho unos arreglos decentes, y ella va muy apañada para la ocasión con esa estrella de mar en la cabeza, pero comete el error de intentar entonar, con un tema que además tiene una melodía nula. No solo desafina como una perry perra (worst joke ever), sino que encima intenta alardear. Lo dicho, muy poca vergüenza.

El resultado es una actuación más parecida a Labuat que a Ella Fitzgerald, así que esperamos que Katy siga moldeándose el pelo hasta su siguiente disco, donde estamos seguros que habrá al menos una canción que cambie nuestras vidas durante dos semanas.

Ear Worms (from the German phrase Ohrwurm) are those songs that weasel their way into your head like uninvited guests and then proceed to stink up the inside of your cranium by playing themselves there over. And over. And over. And over. They’re those songs that just get stuck in your head, and no amount of screaming, pounding, protesting, and banging your head into your desk will get them out. Someone infected with an Ear Worm may find themselves prone to bursting out into the song in inappropriate places, tugging at their ears in fury, and can end up distracted in the middle of conversation (or other important activities) by the continuous snatches of song wavering between their ears. And it’s only a matter of time before, like Darryl Revok, they drill a hole in their forehead to let the voices out.

Thank you TV Tropes for giving a name to this phenomenon. Millions of us suffer from Ear Worm infection; in our cars, our offices, on the internet and in our iPods. Most are vapid pop songs churned out from the bowels of Hollywood & Vine (or the equivalent London address). Of course, each ear worm is distinct to each sufferer, like a virus that mutates to fit your brain chemistry. Some become classics in spite (or because) they inspire you to bob your head, raise your hand or scream (screw?) like you don’t care…or some such.

Some of my reasons bouts with ear worm include the following symptoms:

Questioning whether I am human or am a dancer? I don’t know, I really, really don’t know….

Miss the time when I ruled the world, although I can’t remember when that was. A past life perhaps?

Wonder why the lovers are losing or why my love is spiraling down and out of control. Seems a tad unfair to me.

Or why am I waiting here? Or for.  I hate waiting.

I know the world is stage, but is it a sickly sweet yet bitterly ironic show for everybody else amusement, who don’t realize that they are also part of said show?

Or course kissing a girl is a fun to do, and more so when its your girlfriend kissing another girl! Bet you like that! Then she dumps you for that special somebody that is hot, sexy and female (and not you). Bummer dude!

And the latest ear worm. It involves fireflies, that much I know. Plus a cool retro tune and toys. Maybe you can figure out the lyrics?

HE MAY be the teenage heartthrob of the competition, but X Factor hopeful Lloyd Daniels’ looks weren’t enough to keep him out of the bottom two last week.

His rendition of Katy Perry’s I Kissed a Girl failed to secure him a place in the final eight, and he was forced to sing for his survival.

But his mother, Lisa Daniels, think Cheryl Cole is to blame, as she feels the Girls Aloud singer doesn’t seem to know what songs work for Lloyd.

The 41-year-old from Treharris said: “She isn’t doing him any justice.

“He should be able to make his own choices – songs he knows he can do best.

“The Jason Mraz song he chose for his first audition in Cardiff was much more suited to him and the song he sang for survival on Sunday was beautiful, even if he had lost his voice and could barely talk. He knows what works for him but Cheryl doesn’t seem to be taking any notice of that.

“Why is she giving him girls’ songs? First Leona Lewis and then Katy Perry – what is she playing at?”

Mother-of-three Lisa said although Lloyd’s song tonight for film soundtrack week is more his kind of type, it’s still not perfect.

She added: “It was so hard seeing him in the bottom two last week and we were completely shocked because we know how many fans he’s got.

“We can’t understand how he went from having 100,000 fans to being in the sing-off – the only thing that I can think of to blame is Cheryl’s song choices for him.”

But fellow Welsh contestant, Lucie Jones, has less sympathy for Lloyd and the song choices Cheryl has made for him.

The 18-year-old from Pentyrch said: “As a performer you have to be versatile and make every song your own and make it suit you.

“It’s a cop-out to say the song doesn’t suit you.”
