Pour l’anecdote : j’ai encore le 45 tours acheté à l’époque. Et ce morceau servit de générique d’ouverture à une trop éphémère émission de Philippe Manoeuvre sur France Inter qui s’appelait – je crois me souvenir – “Je fais du rock”, où défilait la crème de la scène hexagonale d’alors, entre l’écoute des nouveautés d’outre-Manche ou d’outre-Atlantique fort éloignées d’une soupe mainstream montante.

One of Homestead’s two main events this past weekend was RibFest, a hog haven for big rib eaters and other carnival junk foods (I particularly like funnel cake). As usual, it took place at the Air Reserve Park grounds and Homestead MediaJive arrived late in the evening (to avoid all traffic, and we did!) to check out the closing show. Well, we heard Homestead was about to get punked, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts rocked the night away!

WOW! Speaking about a blast from the past, Joan’s classic look in tight leather pants and awesome haircut. The concert was filled with a bunch of generation X-ers, ex-punk music lovers and now mommies and daddies looking to reminisce those rebel years with a little punk rock, by legendary sexy rebel.

As usual, Jett rocked, opening with I Don’t Care About My Bad Reputation and singing a repertoire of old tunes like Love Hurts, Dirty Deeds, Crimson and Clover, Do You Wanna Touch Me, and of Course I Love Rock-n-Roll.

Only one complain: Joan, this is not Fort Lauderdale, I know it makes no sense, coming from the big apple South Florida may seem like one huge chunk of America’s great outdoors, but sorry to disappoint you, this is Homestead. Fort Laud is 90 miles North. We still like you and hope you are back to rock us out of our flip-flops!

I’ve been wanting to do a countdown featuring songs about songs (you know, songs about music, dancing, and/or a certain genre).  I have my 10 songs, but even as I posted Number 10, I wasn’t sure about the order.  So, this one will form as I go.  I normally have my list ready to go before I start.  MY TOP 10 is a music video countdown, but with some songs (maybe two in  particular) occuring before the MTV era, I will  have to improvise and pull something from Dailymotion or YouTube.  Here goes.

1. Joan Jett & The Blackhearts “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll”

Joan Jett cemented her place in music history with this cover of  The Arrows’  1975 original; she could have done nothing before with The Runaways and nothing since with The Blackhearts.  As the first single of her first solo album, it jump-started her career.  Probably the greatest ode to any musical genre, you could replace “rock ‘n’ roll” with any other and it would still resonate as strongly.  The sentiment is translatable and universal.  You get the color version as a BONUS.

The Friday Flashback today is Joan Jett.  Jett had many hits in the 80s and a number one smash with I Love Rock ‘n Roll.  She was named in Rolling Stones’ 100 greatest guitarists of all time and only 1 of 2 women on the list (Joni Mitchell being the other one.)  Her songs all have a hard edge to them, true to her Philadelphia roots.

Mr P is back and I just saw a dude with a “Systembolaget” plastic bag (Systembolaget is where we purchase our alcohol here in Sweden) That reminded me of that it’s friday today. 1982 was a very interesting year for me. It was a year of major decisions. It was the year I finally started to take control of my life instead of allowing life to control me. Of course, all this stuff didn’t happen until the very end of the year, and there is so much cool stuff to get to before we get to that. So, without further delay, here we go … 1982 in all its splendor and glory.

We begin with an 18-year-old college freshman in the midst of changing his major 15 times. Well, maybe seven.

I went back for my second semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Jan. 17. At the end of that week, I was nearly crushed at a tiny little club in Madison called Merlyn’s while watching Joan Jett’s guitar go over my head and her sweat fall on my person. My roommate, Paul II, got tickets for us well in advance of the show. He was going to write a review for the Mad City Music Mirror.  He knew all about Joan from her previous band, The Runaways, an all-girl punk band. She’d had this Blackhearts thing going for an album or so, and we figured it would be fun. Well, by the time the show arrived, Joan’s first hit single was climbing the charts. ”I love Rock N Roll” eventually hit the top 40. In March, it hit No. 1.

We had no idea she’d become so popular in such a short time. I guess her management didn’t either as this tiny little club was filled beyond capacity. I’m glad there wasn’t a fire. Anyway, this band called The Suburbs opened. They were somewhat dark and from Minneapolis, which back then was a somewhat hip place to be from, musically speaking. They weren’t bad.

We were used to seeing a local band, The Shivvers, perform there, and there was always room on the dance floor. This time, the dance floor was pretty well packed. After The Suburbs finished, my roommate and I managed to slip up to the stage, such as it was. I think this stage couldn’t have been any higher than 18 inches off the dance floor. We stayed right there, just a tad to the left of Joan’s microphone. And that’s where we stayed until the show was over.

It didn’t take long before the crowd to press forward and force us to put our knees against the edge of the stage to keep from falling right on top of Joan’s high-top Keds. The bouncers sitting on the edge of the stage did a good job trying to keep us upright, but we ended up hunched over much of the show. To her credit, Joan saw us getting squashed and asked everyone to back up a bit. It was to little or no avail, however. My roommate was in even more dire straits than I was as he seemed to be crushed to the floor on a few occasions. But he said he was most comfortable that way. As for me, I just tried to keep from falling into a mic stand or guitar as my knees rubbed ever so hard against the stage, which was carpeted.

When we finally got free and left the place, I was so hot that I walked out in the Wisconsin winter carrying my coat. There were holes in my jeans and blood on my knees. It was my own personal badge of honor.

I ended up seeing the Joanmeister two more times that year. She opened for the Police at the Rosemont Horizon in Illinois, and played at the Wisconsin State Fair.

That semester, the tuition was raised $30. My roommate and I considered this somewhat of a minor travesty, and he decided we should write a letter to the editor of the school newspaper, and also send a copy of it to the chancellor, Irving Shain. I have a couple copies of the letter. It ran in the Jan. 28, 1982 issue of The Daily Cardinal. Here it what it said:

Letter to Shain

We, the undersigned, as students of the University, hereby give you, Chancellor Shain notice of a lawsuit currently pending in Kangaroo Court Circuit Number 873. Named as the defendants in this suit are Chancellor Irving Shain, the Board of Regents and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The plaintiffs claim unjust economic and psychological hardship induced by the Regents’ imposition of a $30 tuition surcharge this semester.

The suit seeks the following settlement: The revocation of the surcharge, the refund of all surcharge fees to the students who paid them and, in compensation for the great psychological hardships caused by this unforgivable action, the elimination of the College of Engineering.

The plaintiffs, however, expressed willingness to negotiate an out-of-court settlement. They have cordially invited you to lunch at Pop’s Club in Gordon Commons on Friday, Feb. 5, at noon to discuss this most distressful matter. We sincerely hope that you will attend this important meeting.

We never actually thought the chancellor would show up for lunch at a student hangout, and we never expected the chancellor of a Big Ten university to even respond to this letter that obviously was written in jest. In fact, we figured some secretary would read it, grumble and/or laugh … or both … and toss it in the wastebasket.

So imagine our surprise when we actually got a letter back from the chancellor. I wish I had that letter. But basically what he said was (in a similarly tongue-in-cheek serious tone) he’d love to discuss this important matter with us, but he thought our choice of meeting sites was not up to snuff for a matter of such grave importance. Therefore, would we meet with him and the dean of students, I believe his name was Peter Bunn, at Ella’s Deli, a fine establishment in downtown Madison.

So we did … on Feb. 26.

The two of us actually had lunch with the chancellor of a Big Ten university twice. And he paid both times, which was cool. We had lunch at Ella’s Deli, then we had lunch at some fancy joint out in Cuba City. It was one of the cooler experiences I’ve had in my life.

Years later, after Chancellor Shain retired, and I’d become a sportswriter at the Milwaukee Sentinel, I wrote him to let him know what had become of me. I think he’s still living in the Madison area, which would make him about 138 years old about now. What a great guy.

Most stand-up comedians stand around and tell jokes. In Demetri Martin’s Comedy Central special Person., taped live at Austin’s Paramount Theater, the sneaker-sporting performer draws, sings, plays instruments, and, yes, tells jokes. There are even a few animated interludes. So, you get more bang for your buck than just a guy, a stage, and a bevy of zingers. For those unfamiliar with his work, Martin’s specialty is observational humor in the vein of Steven Wright, i.e. “How fast does a zebra have to run before it looks grey?” and “I saw a transvestite wearing a shirt that said Guess.” Some bits are laugh-out-loud funny, while others are more thought-provoking (aside from stints on The Daily Show and Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Martin is a former law school student). Topics include weird handshakes, heavy doors, and Hummer owners–you know, everyday stuff. The extras are in keeping with his down-to-earth persona. The commentary track includes the comedian, his mother, his grandmother, his sister, and his uncles (three of whom appear in the skit at the end). Suffice to say, his family isn’t big on ego-stroking. “Not for me,” his grandmother says, dismissing Martin’s whimsical animations. The DVD also includes his installment of Comedy Central Presents, deleted scenes, and a glimpse at some early gigs. Throughout, there’s a sprinkling of profanity, but Martin generally avoids sexist and/or mean-spirited material. Person. is for comedy fans who prefer indie pop to corporate rock. –Kathleen C. Repaso del fin de semana (además del coñazo de Obama y Mcain, el horror importado de Halloween y la maldita crisis…)

Mientras, por los pelos ante Massa y ante el disgusto de muchos españoles, Hamilton ha ganado el mundial de fórmula 1, sigue la polémica de Pilar Urbano sobre la biografía de la Reina (¿qué hacía esta mujer, a la que no se le entiende nada cuando habla, este pasado sábado en el programa “La Noria”?). Pero hay más, Quinín, el “cerdo-perro”, también continúa de actualidad por su dudoso futuro.

Pues sí, en estos últimos días los medios de comunicación se han hecho eco de la iniciativa comandada por un blogero. Este“señor virtual” busca recaudar el dinero suficiente para comprar al gorrino que, desde pequeño fue tratado como un animal de compañía y que, se ha convertido en uno más de la familia de su dueño. Pero…, ahora el “padrazo” dice que la matanza está próxima y que cada cerdo tiene su “San Martín”. Se siente…

La razón o el corazón…? Las imágenes que hemos podido ver en televisión nos mostraba un animal cercano, entrañable…, que se comportaba ante los vecinos del pueblo de Dumbria como un “perrillo” (…de 200 kilos). Unos cuantos apuestan por sensibilizar a donantes para que este animal se libre de convertirse en embutido y pueda terminar sus días en una granja escuela (o algo así).

Uff… ¿y ahora qué hacemos? …Si nos ponemos en este plan ¿podría este hecho marcar jurisprudencia?,  y  si la marcara, ¿acabaría esto con el buen jamón?

Tras su paso por la banda “Runnaways”, Joan Jett conseguía en mayo de 1982 el número uno en las listas americanas con la canción “I love Rock n Roll”. En 1995 el grupo aragonés “Los Berzas” adaptaba este tema, con una letra, donde que se olvidaba del R&R para alabar tan apetitoso manjar.

Umm, I have a confession to make.
I own everything No Doubt released until Rock Steady. Most people who grew up in the 90s will concede that Tragic Kingdom was an awesome album. Everything before that I own because I went through this happy-go-lucky ska phase. And I’ll say it – Return of Saturn is my favorite. It’s new wave-y and girly and mature and relatable to ladies like myself who are torn between wanting to be in love and wanting to be tough. Deal with it.

But around Rock Steady I got skeptical. I said, “Umm, Gwen, what are you doing? Hey, uh, rest of the band – why are you letting this happen?” “Hollaback Girl” threw a permanent rift in there, and we’ve been in a fight ever since. Or at least until I continued my higher education and developed an ironic appreciation for dance music, that maybe turned into a sincere appreciation. I don’t know. The jury’s still out. Whatever.

We can blame this inner turmoil on Girl Talk.
Mash-ups were originally fun because they kind of poked fun at the fact that pop songs were generic enough to be played over each other and fit together perfectly. Then Gregg Gillis had to come along, rocking his laptop, and mashing up songs on such a skillful level that indie kids and pop fans alike had to embrace him with sincerity. Now nobody knows what’s going on.
