Comic, actor, and writer Owen Benjamin is living in a world gone queer. That’s the premise of Benjamin’s new show on Crackle, Gaytown, where one average straight guy fights for acceptance in a small town full of intolerant and backwards gays. It’s like that weird Travolta movie White Man’s Burden where black people are bigoted and white people discriminated against. Except it’s fablarious (hilarious + fabulous)! Benjamin recently answered a few of our questions about Gaytown, the place, and Gaytown, the show.

Crackle: How did you get the idea for Gaytown—had you spent a lot of time in the Castro or West Hollywood recently?

Owen Benjamin: Living in Hollywood for sure was huge. Seeing rainbows on the police cars out here definitely was inspiring.

Crackle: You had a small part in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which was about two dudes who pretend to be gay for financial reasons. Did this movie have any bearing on your creation of Gaytown?

OB: No, that was just insanely fun. I’ve been thinking about doing Gaytown for years.

Crackle: How have your gay friends reacted to the show—are you afraid at all of offending them?

OB: No, gay people seem to like it the best. I didn’t use the gay stereotype very much and I think a lot of them will see it as an eye opener to the straight community for what a lot of them go through. Of course some will be offended, but there are always people [who are] offended [by] everything comedic.
I’m sure “why did the chicken cross the road” wasn’t very popular in the chicken community.

Crackle: What is the closest you’ve ever come to a real-life Gaytown?

OB: West Hollywood and Chelsea [in NYC]. But neither of those places are anything like Gaytown. A main joke of Gaytown is that it’s very conservative. The gay communities I know are very artistic and liberal and open. In Gaytown its as if you’re in the center of Alabama but everyone is gay.

Crackle: You’re a Punk’d alumnus; how would a Gay Punk’d go?

OB: Probably not very well, haha. [ed: We'd had in mind something along the lines of staged repossession of all of Perez Hilton's hair product. But whatever.]

Crackle: Legally speaking, what’s it like to be straight in Gaytown? Can you get married? Are there laws against vaginal sex?

OB: There’s an anti-straight ordinance that forces all men to wear fannypacks.

Crackle: IMDB says that you’re in the upcoming movie The House Bunny, the story of a down-on-her-luck Playboy Bunny who teaches life lessons to a group of clueless sorority girls. Did any of this wisdom make it to you?

OB: I played Hugh Hefner’s shirtless butler. I don’t think my character was capable of too much wisdom, haha.

Crackle: On a scale of 1 to 10 and with as much commentary as possible, rate how much displeasure the following activities would cause if performed in a public place in Gaytown, where 1 is no displeasure and 10 is maximum
displeasure:

- Holding a ‘Bette Midler Sucks’ sign
7 – Don’t fuck with Bette.

- Wearing clothes that don’t fit right
1 – It’s actually encouraged.

- Buying tickets to ’10,000 B.C.’
[The movie] doesn’t exist in Gaytown. It’s RENT everyday all day.

We’ve been getting a few hits on the forum [visit here to watch all the movies] for the movies, but yet no take downs on the Veoh end. The movie “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” has been on Veoh for 6+ days now. The new movie “War” and “Simpsons The Movie” was recently added to Veoh yesterday. We’re hoping to keep track on how long the movies stay up, although we’re not going through the extent of pinging the server with the file name.

The biggest shocker on Veoh is the Porn! Here is a video link on Veoh to a porno to watch off their site. I didn’t want to post it here. So any kid can log on to Veoh.com and watch it. Do you see the issues transpiring here yet?

It’s funny too see big business get away with this. They’re allowing it to get more exposure for their website.

We decided to post the videos to make some valid points in the battle of the MPAA [Motion Picture Association of America] and the movie “pirates” of our time.

What makes this story so unique is the fact that movies are being posted and hosted on VeohTV, a popular and growing video community over the internet. To learn more about VeohTV, please read our previous article reviewing their website. Veoh is backed by some big names and big TV and Movie Networks. What’s so unique about posting movies on Veoh, allows users to watch the videos in its original resolution that it is uploaded as and allows users that have the VeohTV software installed to download the movies directly to their pc.

Using Veoh’s excellent P2P file transfer protocol allows you to download the videos to your pc faster than any BitTorrent linked video. In the picture above, I downloaded all three pieces of the movie “The Last Legion”. With a standard high speed cable connection with Comcast, it took less than 30 minutes to download 700mb’s of video.

It’s a huge slap in the face for the MPAA and this latest news will leave a painful sting. With this latest news and our recent article on EpisodeNetwork, it has given internet users a legal way to watch movies for free.

The MPAA is polluting all the movie screens in theaters before each movie to warn viewers not to record the movie with a camcorder. They are going after other individuals that have uploaded movies through BitTorrents to stop others from downloading. With such aggression towards fighting more and more movies showing up online, it’s an embarrassing battle that the MPAA is losing. What will happen next will continue to be interesting and great news. I have my money on the “pirates” in this fight.

Obviously with the movies on Veoh, they will eventually be taken down once they gain knowledge of it. In the near future though, don’t be surprised to see new programs being created to use Veoh’s P2P system and without Veoh’s knowledge.

I just saw the first two Bourne movies and will be seeing the third soon.  Overall they were quite good.

Today I saw “I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry”. It was hilarious! Adam Sandler was so funny, my brother was laughing uncontrollably throughout the whole movie.

This month, getting people to crack up will be a sign of a job well done. In her new movie, the comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Jessica portrays a gay-rights attorney who ends up falling for her client, played by Adam Sandler, who is pretending to be coupled up with Kevin James’s character to receive domestic-partner benefits. “Finally, I get to play the goofy outgoing girl, which is much more my real personality,” she says. Case in point: She and her group of girlfriends have a tradition of getting dressed up in crazy ’70s clothes and neon wigs and going roller-skating at a Los Angeles rink. The other night, they even donned the wigs to stay in and play board games. “I am just not this aloof and sexy woman,” she says.

Does anyone actually watch MTV anymore? I guess someone did last night.

When the tabloids started spotting Biel with Justin Timberlake in January shortly after his breakup with Cameron Diaz—the two were seen snowboarding together in Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival; sharing a glass of champagne at Prince’s Golden Globes party; and backstage at Timberlake’s concert in San Diego—her personal life suddenly became of great interest to the public. She dodges a probe about her relationship with Timberlake while knocking back shrimp tempura with aplomb, saying that she was in Park City with girlfriends and holding meetings for her production company, Iron Ocean Films. Nor does she want to discuss her past relationships with actors Ryan Reynolds and Chris Evans, or Yankee star Derek Jeter, “for no other reason than I can’t even go to the dry cleaner by myself anymore,” she says. “You’re seen in public with anybody that you might not even know, and you’re speculated about.”

Asked if the constant attention makes dating hard, she says, “It makes everything hard because you can’t even go to pick up a prescription without somebody trying to snap a photo of what you have in your Longs Drugs bag. Thank goodness I’m a nice person,” she says. “Thank you, Mom, for teaching me that.”

The film is set to be directed by Adam Shankman, he of Hairspray fame. He said, “It’s basically a mash-up of Liar Liar and The Princess Bride, [mixed] with the fantasy side of The Lord of the Rings.”

Adam can be seen in the current release, Reign Over Me, and the upcoming movie, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, due out in July, with Kevin James.

The King of Queens is ending their nine-season run on May 21st. Kevin’s next project is an upcoming movie with Adam Sandler, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which will hit theaters this summer.
