Si vous nous suivez depuis le début, vous avez pu voir quelques posts à propos du fameux (et mystérieux) Night Works. C’est en février dernier que débarquait sur le net et sur certaines ondes (big up Radio Nova) le morceau ‘I Tried so hard‘. Fort bien accueilli, ce titre avec son clip génial (dont le concept n’est pas aussi simple qu’il n’y parait) a marqué les esprits et surtout éveillé un intérêt certain pour cet artiste. Derrière Night Works, on retrouve Gabriel Stebbing qui n’est pas un nouvel arrivant sur la scène musicale. En effet, il a fait partie dès les débuts du groupe Metronomy qu’il a par la suite quitté en 2009 pour mener d’autres aventures (plus particulièrement son groupe Your Twenties).
C’est donc avec Night Works que l’on retrouve Gabriel, et celui-ci a accepté de répondre à toutes nos interrogations sur ce nouveau projet. Go!

Sébastien :  Salut Gabriel, cela fait maintenant quelques mois que nous suivons ton projet Night Works et que nous l’apprécions, et nous souhaitons bien sur en savoir un peu plus sur celui-ci.  Car c’est vrai, peu d’infos sur le web, un profil Facebook et un tumblr y sont dédiés, cela fait pas beaucoup à se mettre sous la dent.
Pourquoi ce pseudonyme ‘Night Works’ ?
Gabriel Stebbing :  En anglais, il y a plusieurs sens : on peut y voir le sens de ‘travailler la nuit’ (qui est mon moment préféré), ou le fait que pendant la nuit tout continue de tourner (comme en journée).

Seb : Et à propos de tes inspirations musicales?
Gabriel Stebbing : Il y a 2-3 périodes ou lieux que j’ai à l’esprit lorsque je compose et enregistre: Los Angeles dans les 70′s, la Grande-Bretagne dans les 80′s (plus précisément des groupes comme Prefab Sprout et Scritti Politti) et Ibiza vers la fin des 80′s (l’arrivé de l’acid house en Europe).

Seb : Nous t’avons découvert avec 2 titres, ‘I tried so hard’ et plus récemment ‘The Eveningtime’, que nous prépares-tu pour les mois à venir? De nouveaux titres, collaboration ou même un album?
Gabriel Stebbing : D’autres titres sont prévus. Tout est prêt pour être sorti, c’est juste une question de temps, cela sera diffusé au compte-goutte, lentement. Il y aussi un morceau que j’ai spécialement crée pour la France, mais je le garde secret pour l’instant. Vous allez devoir attendre!

Seb : Les clips de tes 2 premiers morceaux sont signés Daniel Brereton, qui est aussi derrière les clips d’artistes tels que Django Django, Connan Mockasin ou Kindness. Comment en êtes-vous arrivés à travailler ensemble?
Gabriel Stebbing : J’ai rencontré Daniel quand nous avons travaillé ensemble sur des clips pour l’album ‘Nights Out’ de Metronomy, et nous sommes restés en contact. Il a vraiment un sens artistique et nous avons développé ensemble la totalité du parcours narratif du projet. Il en fait la totalité des vidéos.

Seb : Tu as l’air d’avoir un rapport un peu spécial avec la France…que ce soit sur ton Tumblr ou sur ton profil Facebook tu y fais souvent référence, peux-tu nous en dire +?
Gabriel Stebbing : J’ai passé beaucoup plus de temps en France que dans aucun autre pays, à part l’Angleterre bien sur. J’ai de la famille et des amis qui ont vécu ou vivent encore là-bas. J’ai dû certainement passer plus de temps à Paris qu’à Glasgow ou Manchester. Je pense que les français ont une sensibilité spéciale vis à vis de la musique, et de manière générale, une sensibilité culturelle assez unique. J’aime le Tour de France aussi. Je souhaiterai juste savoir parler français!

Seb : On retrouve Joseph Mount de Metronomy à la production de The Eveningtime, quels rapports entretiens-tu avec lui?
Gabriel Stebbing : Il est l’un de mes plus vieil ami et collaborateur. Que pourrais-je dire de plus ?

Seb : Si tu devais partager un titre qui te tient à coeur, vieux ou récent, de n’importe quel style musical, ce serait lequel?
Gabriel Stebbing : Alors voici un classique anglais de guitare en picking. Martin Carthy, guitariste anglais de légende que j’ai eu le privilège de voir en concert dans un très petite salle, montre dans cette vidéo comment jouer ‘The Siege of Delhi’. Donc vous allez aussi apprendre quelque chose avec cette vidéo.

But I stumbled across a new remix by producer Derwin Panda, aka Gold Panda, that I just had to post. He completely reinvented “I Tried So Hard” by Night Works, the new project from Metronomy bassist Gabriel Stebbing.

The simple, soft original was the perfect canvas for Panda to mold his own vision of the song. He adds beautiful textures, pushing the delicate soul ballad into expansive new dimensions. It’s not just a new beat or a chopped up structure, it’s a completely different song.

Today Summertime Swag is getting a little dirty, with some much more Electronic Dance influences then the last couple. Justice and artists such as Daft Punk, are almost un-remixable, but everyone once in a while someone nails one, Lazerdisk Sex Party did it to Justice‘s track Helix. Pretty Lights new single called You Get High, pretty much love anything from Derek. AaA & Majestry throw down a Glitch Hop infused banger remixing a classic funk track, its called The Line. Next Vacationer gets taken on a Electronic Funk infused ride by Giraffeage remixing their track Trip. UK’s night works released a record store day track this year titled “i tried so hard” the first single from their new album got some remixes. stream and download them below as well as the video for the track.

A couple of months back we posted NIGHT WORKS‘ debut single I Tried So Hard, which was released as a Record Store Day 12″.

The track was widely praised and to build on that success two remixes have emerged from electronic producer GOLD PANDA and London’s NZCA/LINES.

Gold Panda’s is virtually unrecognisable, as he builds his own up tempo  track around vocal sample snippets, while Ncza/Lines stays truer to the original’s soul feel. Listen to both below.

The UK producer Gold Panda just put up this remix on Soundcloud today.  He just can’t do wrong when remixing.  So make sure you grab this for free above.

I Tried So Hard is the first release of former Metronomy bassist Gabriel Stebbing’s new project, Night Works. Or NGHTWRKS. So much better once you figured out how to read it, right!? After having been reworked into a sweet mix full of bassy waves by fellow Londoner NZCA Lines, the originally mellow and laidback track was now remixed by Stebbing’s buddy Gold Panda and ended up a truly bouncy office-chair-dancer. Let’s enjoy and pretend it’s Friday cause lying to yourself can be oh so easy.

Hello Sunday, hello sun and hello air. This mixtape serves you to open your apartment window and say hello to happiness. In this very moment, we are doing the same thing and preparing ourselves for a day of indulging ourselves, walking to the Berlin streets listening to laid back electronic tunes of all kinds. From a fantastic Clams Casino-Style but not clammy hip hoppy tune, towards aired out electronica involving ocean sounds and windy rhythms and a quite lo-fi-y come down. This is one of the simplest songs I’ve heard all year (I know it’s only March, but still…) It consists of a piano loop, sweeping strings and soft vocals. It’s beautiful. Anyway, I’m going to shut up and let the music ‘talk’.
