Yes. Anyone that’s read the Escapist this week, Destructoid in August last (or even back in 20

Yes. Anyone that’s read the Escapist this week, Destructoid in August last (or even back in 2008), or even just be a fan of 2D platformers will probably be aware of this game’s existence. Most will seethe with unfiltered rage at the slightest mention of it, others will roll their eyes and say “Oh… THAT game.”

You see, I Wanna Be The Guy (from here abbreviated to IWBTG), is a 2D platformer that is inspired by classic games from the late 80s and early 90s. Games that had no save points, were damn near impossible and required a lot of skill and memory to even get so far, let alone complete it. IWBTG is a tribute of sorts to that style of game – albeit with save points, unless you play on Impossible, which I REALLY wouldn’t recommend – in the way that it’s beatable, but damn near impossible to do so without dying a few times. And you will die. Lots. Anything you touch that isn’t solid ground can and will kill you at the slightest of grazes. And even that said ground can kill you if you’re not careful how you stand on it.

This game really wants you to hate it. It taunts you. It goads you. It throws things at you when you least expected it and that last half of a screen that took you 2 days to clear? Yeah, you forgot to shoot the Save Point, you have to do it again. But you end up loving it. Why? Because it makes you angry. Everyone’s got anger in them somewhere, at someone, at something or other. This game’s the best way to vent that anger without punching someone square in the face, although if your PC desk is near a wall, I’d make sure it’s padded if I were you, just to be on the safe side. There’s nothing like having a good shouting match with your screen and nobody on the receiving end to shout back at you, unless you count Guilty Gear music and the omnipresent Game Over screen as shouting.

If you liked your frustrating NES platformers that killed you for no reason other than “just because it can”, the likes of MegaMan, Ghosts and Goblins and Bionic Commando in particular, you’ll love the nostalgia trip on offer here. If you grew up in the modern-day era, PS1-onwards, I suggest giving it a go but I can guarantee you that you won’t like it’s off-the-charts difficulty (Medium’s the easiest and even that’s insanely hard) and original NES-inspired looks and music. However, I think there’s a part of this that everyone’ll love. From the trap level where the only way to get out is avoiding falling Tetris blocks and use them to get to a gap in the GUI tat takes you to the next section, to the pit of spikes with randomly-appearing platforms that you have to memorise the order of, it’s a real test of character and will to want to continue playing this game, just to see what other insane trap’s lying in wait on the next screen.

Kayin. I wanna save the Kids gibt. Viel Spaß odr Frust wünsche ich! Falls jemand einen guten Mega Man-Klon kennt: her mit nem Link!

Since this blog is getting next to no attention for the obscure video game related stuff, I figure n

Since this blog is getting next to no attention for the obscure video game related stuff, I figure now is my opportunity to go several levels deeper and talk about an obscure “indie” game that is driving us all mad. I referred to “challenge gaming” a while back, suggesting that it is a bug that a few gamers have, but many are glad they lack. If you want to truly test yourself (and your patience), check out I Wanna Be The Guy.

I started playing it for the same reason that one climbs a mountain: because it is possible to do so. Obviously playing a hard as hell video game is considerably less manly than climbing a mountain, at least I’m realizing one of my callings in life and not freezing to death.

I Wanna Be the Guy is an extremely well made freeware game made by a dude named Kayin that makes nods to many 8-bit classics. Unfortunately, it’s only available for windows, but if you have an intel chip in your mac, it runs just fine under “wine” emulation, which is a beautiful thing. I’ve had access to a spanking new mac with an intel chip (or a “that chip” to some), so i’ve gotten halfway through the game and died 596 times already.

My roommate referred to it as “a theoretical exercise in gaming”, and that’s kind of exactly what it is at times. As you space out and try 50 times to make the perfect double jump between two moving spikes, you will probably end up reflecting on what exactly makes a game a game, and what the relationship is between you, the player, and the game designer. It’s downright unfair in many places as well. Just when you think you’re safe, you get blindsided by an unexpected spike that comes out of nowhere, a falling block, or maybe a killer bird. Still, if you have the right mindset, you will press on… because the game compels you to. Sometimes it’s really glitchy too and your game will crash and you’ll lose your progress. This only seems to fit with the nature of the game itself.

I said it’s really well made, and it is. It’s full of hilarious references for those who are willing to look for them. Often you will be caught off guard by some really lame way of dying, only to laugh about it later. For the player, it presents a weird mindset where you know you are constantly being fucked with, and you’re trying to consistently expect the unexpected. It’s purposely bad in many places, but it’s an extremely nostalgic and well designed bad game… if that makes sense.

You probably don’t need me to tell you if you will like this or not. Enjoy it, it’s difficult, but rewarding. The struggle will be one of the greatest you will ever face. This also means that when you do achieve something in this game, it will feel better than most other gaming experiences. Maybe you’ll forget for a minute that you are sitting in the dark, listening to the same ghouls ‘n’ ghosts music loop over and over again, and think for a second that you did something incredible. Of course, right after that you’ll get smacked by a falling tombstone and scream at the top of your lungs.

I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game is a freeware adventure platformer game for the PC that was

I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game is a freeware adventure platformer game for the PC that was released October 2007 by Mike O’Reilly, who is better known by his alias, Kayin Nasaki. It, like the many games that it parodies, is 8-bit. Apparently this game is in it beta version. When the real version will come out (which most people do not want), no one will know.

The plot is simple, but it hard to type it out because it, once again like the many games that it parodies, is based on the crappy translations from Japan to the US. Here’s the plot, quoted from Wikipedia:

In the year 200x on his 15th birthday… a child left home on his dangerous and epic quest to become The Guy! Many years ago, “The Guy” left world and retreat to “Dungeon of Doom”. Now “Young Boy” goes to defeat “The Guy” and become “The Guy” with his gun pass handed down by former “Grandfather the Guy”. Go find the “8 units”. Now become “The Guy”.

The plot does not have any affect on the game. Even without the plot, the game would still be intact…. without the plot, that is.

The music is fun to listen to, but it’s nothing special. It revisited the songs of many old games, and the song perfectly matches wherever you are playing. It can be loud sometimes though.

Finally, the gameplay….. ugh, the gameplay. In this game, you control the “Young Guy”, or as I would like to call him, “The KId”. The arrow keys for moving, Shift for jump, and Z to shoot, but if you would like, the controls are changeable, so yay for the people that don’t like those controls!!! That’s basically it for the gameplay, Sounds pretty boring so far, right?

What has attracted many people , like me, to play this game (and also why many people have stopped playing this game) is how difficult the game is, even in it’s easiest mode. The Kid basically has a total of 1 HP, so if get hit by something or if you crash into something, you have to play your way all the way back from the savepoint (which can be used by shooting at them) or from the beginning, depending on which difficulty the game is played on, which is very hard to do because there are traps at every step that you take, literally. Most people that do play this game, will usually stop after the first three screens because it’s just that hard, so expect the unexpected….

ZE FINAL STAND:
As long as I talked about how fucking hard this game is, then I am satisfied. So if you want a free game, try this game. If you’re looking for a challenge, play this game. If you’re just bored and want to have something to really concentrate on other than the games that you already have, then play this game.

I’ve been following this Let’s Play series and I respect what these YouTubers do with these videos, they play video games and you watch their suffering as they constantly get parts wrong, and there’s not much more suffering while playing a game than I Wanna Be The Guy. DarknesstheCurse also posted some Let’s Plays of the same game which I’ll post later on, but HyperSonicX2’s is the series I’m watching. He’s a lot more patient and calmer than DarknesstheCurse because he actually takes breaks inbetween the save points. And he’s good at I Wanna Be The Guy. Enjoy!

Welcome to the NGP Video Gallery. This blog, unlike my other one which is to do with Anime reviewing, is a depository for internet videos I find interesting. Those of you who know me from my Anime blogging will know that I used to call myself New Geek Philosopher when I was reviewing Anime, but when I changed my name to Asperger’s Anime Blogger I decided to take a new direction with that blog. But this one is different because it details a number of videos I found interesting. I feature a lot of “Let’s Play” video game marathon genre videos because I like them, but I also feature other videos I like which aren’t Let’s Plays. Here’s the first one, let’s see if the embedding works:

If that works, then we have ourselves a blog entry. Hope you enjoy it.

I Wanna Be The Guy).

Hello loyal readers! Recently I had the pleasure of playing Godhand for the first time. I know, righ

Hello loyal readers! Recently I had the pleasure of playing Godhand for the first time. I know, right? I’m like, 8 years late here. Anyways, this was my assessment of it :

GODHAND=HARD.

Now for those of you who don’t know, Godhand is a 3D brawler by the late Clover Studios. The gameplay mechanics, plot, and characters are all centered around punching (and sometimes kicking, but I’m trying not to spoil too much). Now at this point you’re probably wondering; “wait, didn’t Kilroy just say he was way late to the scene and everyone had already played this game already? Then why is he bothering to explain things everyone already knows?” The answer is, because it’s a review, silly! I have to use some sort of device to lead into the body of the article, and I figure I might as well stick with the most convenient one even if it seemingly contradicts something I said a sentence earlier. That’s just how I roll.

Well, being all Pro like I am I jumped straight into normal mode and promptly got my ass handed to me 80 or 90 times while trying to learn the gameplay mechanics. I gradually caught on to the fact that this game doesn’t let you “feel it out” like many other games would. It’s strictly action. This is actually something that works strongly in the games favor, however. I would say there are two twin portions of the overall aesthetic, in terms of gameplay. The first deals with how the player is forced to interact with the game. Now hopefully no one will spite me for drawing on fighting games for comparison. If they do, then, uh, darn, but here’s the comparison that comes to mind.

Traditional 2d fighting games tend to have a range of characters, that can generally be pegged into categories like “slow but does a lot of damage”, “fast, combo based, small damage per hit”, “joke character” and “WTF broken high-tier”. Now, classic 2d side-scrolling brawlers like Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, River City Ransom, or whatever tend to take after the first category. Your characters move like Zangief, although their attacks are a bit more generic, and you never do spinning piledriver level damage unless you picked up a car and hit an enemy with it, or something. Godhand is different. Well, it’s 3d to start with. What I mean though is that it takes more after the second category. If you play Yun in Street Fighter 3, or MVC2 competitively, you understand the sort of pacing this game has. You have to be setting something new up before you’ve even gotten your first thing out. At first this is aggravating. Actually, it stays aggravating for a while. The game is diverse enough that you have to change your strategy while retaining your pace. Boss battles are challenging, and require frequent, clever and novel use of the games dodging ability. All this constitutes the first part of the experience.

The second bit deals with how the game rewards or penalizes the player for their actual playing. Doing better makes the game HARDER. Doing worse makes it easier. The effect is a somewhat masochistic experience; you’re punished for excellence. However, death still looms over you as a disincentive, forcing you to keep pace at least even if you can’t react all that well to any given obstacle. In the mean time, you want to do better simply because, well, you’re still playing the game. There is no limit to the number of times you can continue, so death is largely just an inconvenience. However it is the ULTIMATE inconvenience in terms of the game, because the amount of effort it takes to progress through a single area is often substantial, not to mention a boss fight. Spending 5 minutes keeping up the ridiculous pace of this game, getting a boss down to their last sliver of life, and being done in will perhaps go down as one of the most classically infuriating experiences in all of gaming. I am quite honest when I say there are very few games that can match the level of aggravation generated by this one, or that require the same sort of masochism and dedication to perfection.

I Wanna be the Guy, the freeware game that gained notoriety for its mock 8-bit aesthetic, comically trivial plot and ludicrous difficulty, is a cousin to Godhand. So too, I would say, are the classic 2d Oddworld games. Although both of these are a different genre of game from Godhand, and play both differently and at a different pace, they share much of the overall feeling. Of course it makes sense, they all have similar philosophies about how to punish the player. Infinite continues reasonably let the games have a cliff-like learning curve. In traditional games, there are small obstacles accentuated by larger, cruder obstacles imposed upon you by the game, like how many lives or continues you have. Games like this cut all that crap and put all the obstacles up front, where they’re directly relevant to how the player interacts with the actual game.

Well, maybe not so much that. A life or limited continue based system promotes caution, and a conservative style of play. A system of infinite continues promotes a go-for-broke attitude. Building a game that requires such an attitude is a work of genius. Clearly one can take risks and gain rewards they otherwise wouldn’t have in many games that use a limited continue system. However, making a game require this type of aggression, and limiting the number of effective strategies so that the player is forced to get it right, either exactly right or a shade really damn close to it, is truly masterful. That’s where the aggravation comes from, the process of elimination.

I mean, what’s some crackpot stuff I can say about this game? This game makes me dig Karl Popper’s critical method. This game makes me dig Friedrich Nietzsche’s views on life affirming vs. life denying rules. Extremely specific rules are required to play the game, and so accomplishment is tied to order. Hence, these rules are liberating.

When you get them right. Well… I guess that’s the article.

I mean, I could speak about the characters, who are adequate, not literary, basically the sort of depth you would expect from people in real life whose primary interest is punching other people. I could speak about the camera angle, which imposes a sense of claustrophobia and helped make me feel pretty close to how I do when I’m actually getting the crap kicked out of me by 8 or 9 people. The truth is though that not only are these things are peripheral, I pretty much just said everything I have to say about them!

So, that’s that. The substance of the experience is in the doing, and it’s pretty damn impressive.

-Kilroy

Sorry for the delayed update, but Mario Kart Wii got ahold of me and wouldn’t let go the last two days. Excuses aside, I now present to best two rom hacks on the internet. They are…

What to say about this little gem? This game is a tongue in cheek platformer based on the 8-bit games of old. The game has bizarre level design and a crazy difficulty level, but I’ll be damned if you don’t feel like a million bucks if and when you manage to make it to the second screen of the game. The levels are packed with tons of hazards, almost all of which are impossible to avoid the first time through. The game has a medium difficulty level, which features more save points, but you are punished for choosing a lighter difficulty by having to play through the game with a pink bow added to the main sprites head. The levels are modeled after famous 8-bit games and bosses include Mike Tyson (from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out) and a giant Zangief (from Street Fighter 2). This game will definitely make you want to pull all of your hair out and kill the asshole who created it, but that is also the point of the game.

This is the greatest Mario game that Nintendo never made. If the NES had lasted just two more years, I would like to think that a game of this caliber could’ve become Super Mario Bros. 4. Coded by one guy over a period of a year and a half, this game is simply amazing. The creator managed to create a new and entertaining Mario platformer that is actually innovative. It’s not just Mario 3 with different levels. This game features all new enemies, power ups, sprites, backgrounds, and implements the one feature that Super Mario Bros. 3 noticeably lacks: the ability to save your progress. This game is truly a feat considering that a fresh, innovative, and fun gaming experience was created that can truly live up to the status of a Mario game.
