I’m going to try not to sound like a 13-year-old girl here but . . .

Oh.  My.  God.

Okay, so here’s what happened.  In the last few weeks or so, I happened to blog about my two favorite songs in, oh, let’s just say THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE.  The first song was I Want It All by Ben Mallott.  Which, as you might me remember me saying, is a DAMN good song.  I play it so much around here that my kids walk around singing it, which basically means my kids walking around singing the blues.  But don’t worry, they have sweet, happy voices, so it’s not as depressing as it sounds.  Anyway, a few weeks after blogging about that song, I got to go hear Ben sing that song live.  At The Saxon Pub.  In Austin.  These three things taken together are what’s known as a “triple threat.”  And right before he started that song, he said into the  microphone “Is Jennifer still here?” because he knew I’d come to hear him sing it and he wanted to make sure I didn’t miss it (so yes, he’s got a voice to die-for, he’s cute as can be AND he’s sweet — this is ALSO known as a ” triple threat” . . . ladies, please discuss among yourselves).  So anyway, he sings the song.  It’s just Ben and his guitar and that voice of his that’s like a slice of heaven.

And it was sublime.  And I take the use of the word “sublime” seriously; I don’t just throw it around.  It is used only for occasions that are, truly, sublime.

THEN I wrote this entry called Songs to Share, wherein I wrote all about this other song that I am head-over-heels-for, I mean I really, REALLY love this song.  It’s called Little Pieces by Gomez.  Oooooooh this is a good song.  Okay, I know, I already went into all that in that entry so I won’t do it again.  But seriously, did you click the little sideways triangle and listen to it?  Oh yes.

And here’s where it gets really good, at least for me.  In fact it gets damn good.  You see, tonight, I went to see Gomez.  They played right here in Austin, at a place called Stubb’s.  If you know Gomez, you’re excited for me.  If you know Gomez AND you know Stubb’s, then you are downright giddy and envious.  And I went with these two girlfriends who are funny and funny and they make me laugh and oh did I mention funny?  So we are having a really fantastic time, laughing and talking and then listening to Gomez play.  Listen, I don’t know a thing about music but let me say this about Gomez.  Even I could tell that these men are not just some guys in a band.  They are musicians and they have talent that you just don’t get a chance to see very often.  In between EVERY SINGLE SONG, most of the guys would put down their instrument and pick up some other instrument.  They’d kick that instrument’s ass for a few songs and then switch to some OTHER instrument.  I counted 12 different guitar/bass thingys (again, sorry, I’m awful with which instruments are which but some looked like regular guitars, some looked like “electric guitars” and some looked like something in between but at any rate there were 12 of them and only three guys playing them ALL).

And I was waiting and waiting for my song, Little Pieces.  That’s not to say I wasn’t enjoying the other songs because I was.  Oh, I was.  In fact I fell so in love with ANOTHER song (Sunset Gates, but just save yourself the trouble and buy the whole album, A New Tide, just do it) that I almost felt I was cheating on MY song.  But then, right near the end, they played Little Pieces.  And they played the HELL out of it.

And it was sublime, too.

So I guess my point is that within just a few weeks, I came to know and love two songs very, very much.  In fact I came to consider those two songs among my favorite songs EVER.  I don’t say that lightly, I really don’t.   And in that same couple of weeks, I got to hear both those songs played live.  Played passionately.  Played to perfection.  How lucky am I?

One of the lines in Little Pieces is:

“There’s a fine line what you want and what you need 
Standing right there in between”

There IS a fine line between what you want and what you need.  But this time, hearing those two songs live, I feel like I got what I wanted AND what I needed.  I know that doesn’t happen too often and believe me, when I was listening to those songs, I knew it was something special.  I knew every second of it was something extraordinary that I wouldn’t soon forget.  And if you think I’m over-speaking it, well then you haven’t heard YOUR favorite song played live, or at least not lately.

And that, my internet friends, is the power of a good song.  Or two.

Cercant per la web informació al respecte, vaig trobar que la Lupe ha tingut la brillantíssima idea de treure un disc de versions en català de clàssics del rock, amb un repertori excepcional (les meves preferides, I Can’t Stop Loving You, de Van Halen, From The Inside dels Linkin Park, i Winds of Change de Scorpions), i amb el suggerent nom de KCOR DE ROCK, que us recomano especialment si us agrada el Rock amb majúscules.

Col.laboren en el disc Víctor Estévez, Ramon Ramos i Joanjo Bosk a les veus i els Dragonslayer al complet als instruments.

Una pena que sigui difícil reunir a tots aquests músics per fer una formació estable i tenir-los al menys unes quantes dates de gira, esperem que al menys aquest estiu tinguem algun dia de veure’ls en directe encara que només sigui una vegada.

Poco antes de Navidad haciendo zapping me encontré en Olot Televisió con la noticia de la gravación de un videoclip en la ciudad, de un tema que se me pegó enseguida, como no podia ser de otra forma, ya que se trataba del “I Want It All” de Queen, pero en una versión en catalán firmada por la que fuera guitarrista de Sangtraït, Lupe Villar.

Buscando por la web información al respecto, encontré que Lupe ha tenido la brillantísima idea de sacar un disco de versiones en catalán de clásicos del rock, con un repertorio excepcional (mis preferidas, I Can’t Stop Loving You de Van Halen, From The Inside de Linkin Park y Winds Of Change de Scorpions), y con el sugerente nombre de KCOR DE ROCK, que os recomiendo especialmente si os gusta el Rock con mayúsculas.

Colaboran en el disco Víctor Estévez, Ramon Ramos y Joanjo Bosk en las voces y los Dragonslayer al completo en los instrumentos.

Una pena que sea difícil reunir a todos estos músicos para una formación estable y tenerlos al menos unas cuantas fechas de gira, esperemos que al menos este verano podamos tener alguna oportunidad de verlos en directo, aunque sea sólo una noche.

We are going out of town tomorrow to see my little (much-littler-than-me) brother graduate from college.  So there’s a lot to do.  SO since there is so much to do . . . well, it seems like just the right time for a little blog entry about some little triumphs around here that really aren’t so little.

So the first is the kids’ teachers.  I got them all end-of-year-gifts today, so that’s done. Teacher’s gifts:  So much pressure, they really do deserve SO VERY MUCH; I would give my childrens’ teachers the entire world if I could, I love them all that much, each and every one of them.  They have been so so so above and beyond all year.  And what I need to do tonight is sit down and write a letter to each of them, trying to articulate how much they have meant to me and my kids this year.  And how freeing and ABSOLUTELY amazing it has felt to leave my children with someone during the day that I know loves them and teaches them and takes care of them and sees them for who they are.  Triumph Number One.

The second victory is that I went to see Ben Mallott sing this week at The Saxon Pub here in Austin.  Oh, you’ve heard me go on and on about him when I fell head over heels in love with his song “I Want It All.”  I knew it would be so, SO good to see him sing it live.  But still I wasn’t prepared for how good it was.  How good he was.  This guy is something special.  So if you want to see someone who will knock your socks off and quite possibly make you cry but definitely will make you call me the next day and THANK ME for turning you on to him, well, then go to his website and see where and when you can see him play sometime soon.  And buy his CD.  From the bottom of my heart, I can tell you:  You’ll be glad you did.  Triumph Number Two.

Thirdly, I got a call from my neurologist.  The MRI and the EEG I got last week came back normal.  No brain tumors.  And, much more importantly, lots and lots of people who reached out to me last week, being friends beyond measure.  Thank you, all of you.  *Big Exhale*  and suffice to say:  Triumph Number Three.

The fourth is that my dad called me a few weeks ago to tell me my godfather had died the night before.  His name was Bob and he was extraordinary.  My dad met him when they were both flight surgeons in Vietnam, which, not surprisingly, turned out to be a very bonding experience for them.  What I know about Bob, and what I knew from a very young age, is that he made me laugh.  Laugh really hard.  How many of us get to have a godfather in our lives for 38 years that makes us laugh really hard?  Especially when that godfather has lived with HIV for the last 20 years?  Triumph Number Four.

I’m gonna wrap this up now because my life is calling.  The fifth and last triumph for today is a piece of paper that my son brought home from school.  He pulled it out when I was making dinner tonight and brought it over and just placed it on the kitchen counter in front of me.  He is about to turn 8 years old next week so he knows me pretty well by now.  In fact I’m going to say he knows me REALLY well because he is a very perceptive person.  And he knew that when I read what he wrote, it would make me happy and it would make me smile.  And here it is:

Now some of you know me and some of you don’t.  But those that know me — can you even imagine how this made me feel?  My son thinks I am funny.  And my son thinks I am good at dancing.  And my son thinks I am cool.  It is decidedly uncool how happy this makes me.  I love that I make him laugh.  I love that somehow, someway, I have done something, though I have no idea what it is, that puts me in the “cool” category.  And I love love love that he thinks knows I am a good dancer.  Because I am, you know.  I am a REALLY good dancer.  And even if he only thinks these things temporarily, he does think them today.  And that’s why, today, that is Triumph Number Five.

I am quite sure life doesn’t get any better than that.

So here’s the deal.  Every once in a long while, someone I know says to me “Oh you don’t know that song?  You HAVE TO listen to it.  It’s AMAZING.”  Or something like that.  And you know what?  I love that.  I love that they are so into this song that they want to share it (and with me.  ME!  They must really like me or something.  Yay!  Anyway….).  And I really DO want to hear the song, even if I end up thinking it’s mediocre or worse.  I am really into sharing music with people.  I think a lot of this comes from being a teenager in the 80’s when my friends and I would lay on the floor of my bedroom, listening to the radio, waiting for a song to come on so we could record it.  Remember how annoying it was when the DJ would talk over the beginning of a song you were trying to record?  Aaargh.  Anyway, we were 13 years old and we’d record a bunch of OH MY GOD THE BEST SONGS and then we’d pretend we were the DJ’s and we were at some sort of party.  We’d announce the song coming up (I always used a British accent, it added some edge), hit “play” and then we’d all dance around like . . . well, like a bunch of 13-year-old girls.  That may be what Heaven is going to be like for me, it was THAT fun.

I told you about the song I Want It All by Ben Mallott a while back; maybe you liked it and maybe you didn’t (okay, I actually find it damn near impossible that you didn’t like it, but it does take all kinds in this crazy world).  I thought every so often I might tell you about another song I think is great.  Sooooooo, today I’m telling you about this song.  At the risk of insulting some of you, I’ll let you know you need to click on the little sideways triangle next to “play this track.”  It’s called “Little Pieces” by Gomez.  I don’t know much about it except that when I hear it, I want to turn it up so it’s really LOUD and dance around.  Which just happens to be my  main requirement for liking and wanting to share a song.  That or if a song makes me cry.  Oh, also if I’m slowing down on a run and a song comes on that gets me really moving again, I’ll like that song, too.

There’s also one other little tidbit about Little Pieces that made me a fan, and BIG KUDOS to anyone who can tell me what that little factoid might be.  Notice I didn’t say big prizes because as my dear friend Jenny knows (Hi Jenny), last time I promised a prize in the form of an extra  iPod I wasn’t using anymore, I went to package it up and mail it to her and realized that it had gone kaput and was no longer working.  I felt so badly that I almost went out and bought Jenny a brand new iPod.  Almost but didn’t (sorry Jenny).  SO I’m offering big kudos nowadays rather than prizes.  I’ll even applaud you.  I will stand up right here at my desk and applaud you if you can guess the tidbit.  In fact you know what?  I’ll do that for you even if you can’t because we all need someone to cheer and whistle and clap for us every once in a while, just for being a part of the human race.  And who hasn’t always wanted a standing ovation?

And, spring: stationery from Korea that are way too cool for me. Add in film-esque photography, wooden tables and minimalist aesthetic by way of indie-inspirations and no-frills MUJI and you’ve got me craving this stuff. Clean-pressed grey shirts with short sleeves or sleeves rolled up, or wrinkly ones in neat, grid-like plaids, messenger bags, notebooks tucked into back pockets.. forget Parisian chic or polished oxfords strolling down the streets of Milan, give me unfinished concrete, roads with loose gravel, coffeeshops manned by wizened grandfathers who followed his father who followed his and sipping dark, rich coffee in cheap ceramic cups and saucers, anytime.

This post has been sitting in my drafts for the longest time and left by the wayside for reasons of, I don’t know, memory (forgotten) and the relentless passage of time (excuses).

I was clicking around on Facebook the other day and I noticed that my friend Nanette’s status had something to do with Brewster McCracken, who is running for mayor of Austin.  I’m not even sure what she said but I did notice that some guy named Ben commented that seeing Brewster McCracken’s name always made him want to yell it out really loudly in a Scottish accent.  Now, see, that made me laugh really hard.  I think it was the whole Mike Myers vibe to the whole thing but also that it was really random and, well . . . random.  So even though I don’t know Ben, I added a comment letting him know that his comment made me laugh out loud (always let people know when they make you laugh, it can only do good).  So Nanette quickly replied (as she is wont to do, which is why she is such a FUN friend to have on Facebook) that Ben always makes her laugh, except when he is singing, at which time he gives her goosebumps.  I was like “Say what . . .?” because I don’t know Ben so I certainly don’t know that he sings, and MOST certainly don’t know that he sings well enough to give someone goosebumps.  I thought I should investigate.

So I google Ben.  Ben Mallott, that’s his name.  And I click into his website and go to the music page and click on the first song listed.  It’s called I Want It All.  I was so unsuspecting, just googling a name, clicking on a song.  We’ve all done it a thousand times, right?

Well, let me just say: HOT DAMN that’s a good song.  In fact, let me say it just one more time:  HOT DAMN that’s a good song.  I don’t know if you read me often but if you do, you know that I absolutely do NOT use bold type.  Ever.  And I’m using it now.  That’s how good that song is.  Damn.  Good.  Song.

I went on to read more about him and he’s definitely been very regaled lately, especially during SXSW, and everyone is all “Ben this” and “Ben that” so I’m just late to the party (as usual).  But I’m there now, at the Ben Mallott party.  I mean that figuratively since I haven’t yet gotten a babysitter and actually gone to hear him sing in this freakin-amazing-town-of-mine-where-people-like-Ben-Mallott-are-singing-at-the-place-around-the-corner-so-how-lucky-are-we-to-live-here town, but I will one of these days soon.

The song after that is good too, Heartbreaks.  And guess what?  So’s the next one.  You get the idea.  And as for that first song I mentioned, I Want It All, well, let me just say this.  After you’ve listened to it a few times through, then just go ahead and visit the lyrics page for that song and read along the next time you listen, just in case you didn’t get every single morsel out of it the first few times.

And here he again tempts me to separate me from my money: the Fujifilm Pivi MP-300, which is (helpfully, for me at least) only available on eBay or in Japan.

I love the immediacy of being able to print out digital shots from my 5DMKII and update my travel journals on the go, so I have to say that I want to get my hands on that gadget real quick..
