There are 6 State parks on Maui. Each one nicer than the next and not to be missed. Let’s face it, if you can make happy hour at Tommy Bahama’s you can sure as heck explore one of these world class wonders.
Let’s start with Iao Needle

Iao Needle

Emerald peaks emerge from the lush valley floor of Iao Valley. Located in Central Maui, this peaceful state park is home to one of Maui’s most popular landmarks, the 1200-foot Iao Needle. This rock peak overlooks Iao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.

Aside from its natural tropical beautiful, sacred Iao Valley has great historical significance. It was here in 1790, at the Battle of Kepaniwai, that King Kamehameha clashed with Maui’s army in his quest to unite the islands. Kamehameha defeated Maui’s forces in a ferocious battle that ultimately changed the course of Hawaiian history.

There is a well-marked path from the parking lot to view Iao Needle and the ridge-top lookout provides incredible views of the valley. The Needle is often covered in clouds, so an early start is your best bet for a good view. Families can also take a rainforest walk or explore interactive exhibits at the Hawaii Nature Center, which is also located within Iao Valley.

Chùa Kỳ Viên Trung Nghĩa.

Sinh Trung là tên của một ngọn núi nằm trong lòng thành phố biển Nha Trang, bên cạnh Quốc lộ 1.

Trên ngọn núi này, từ xưa đã có một ngôi miếu thờ thần tọa lạc, được thiết lập vào năm Ất Mão (1795), sau khi Nguyễn Ánh chiếm lại vùng đất Nha Trang và thành Diên Khánh. Ngôi miếu được dựng lên để thờ những vị công thần và chiến sĩ trận vong đã có công với nhà Nguyễn. Năm Tự Đức thứ V (1852), triều Nguyễn cho trùng tu lại và đặt tên là Trung Nghĩa miếu.

Từ năm 1948 đến năm 1950, Đoan Huy hoàng thái hậu, thứ phi của vua Khải Định, sinh mẫu của vua Bảo Đại, thường được gọi là Đức Từ Cung, đích thân nhiều lần đến viếng miếu, tổ chức những buổi tế lễ lớn và sau đó đã cùng với một số hào lão của làng Vạn Thạnh vận động hiến cúng ngôi Trung Nghĩa miếu cho Giáo hội Phật giáo tỉnh Khánh Hòa. Hòa thượng Thích Thiện Minh về làm trụ trì đầu tiên đã đổi tên miếu thành khuôn hội Kỳ Viên. Cho đến năm 1990, trụ trì đời thứ 5 là Thượng tọa Thích Trí Viên đã cùng với đông đảo Phật tử đại trùng tu khuôn hội Kỳ Viên, đến tháng 2 năm 1992 thì hoàn thành, chính thức lấy tên Kỳ Viên Trung Nghĩa tự, dân địa phương thường gọi là chùa Núi.

Du khách vãn cảnh chùa, bước lên những bậc tam cấp rộng và dài, hai bên có bờ thành được trang trí thêm những bức tranh bằng đá mài, xen kẽ với những bệ trụ có chóp hình búp sen thật trang nhã… Du khách có thể dừng chân đọc và nghiền ngẫm những câu kinh Pháp Cú tuyệt diệu mà thật gần gũi được khắc trên những tấm đá mài… Ngôi chánh điện mái cong trên thềm cao hiện ra trước mắt với mái ngói rêu phong, các con rồng uốn lượn trên nóc chầu pháp luân và hai tháp nhỏ thấp thoáng nhô lên hai bên nóc điểm xuyết thêm cho vẻ cổ kính thiêng liêng, khoảng giữa là tên chùa được viết bằng chữ Hán nổi bật trên nền vôi màu ngà trước chánh điện. Trước thềm chánh điện là tượng của hai con sư tử xanh thật lớn án ngữ hai góc tả hữu. Trong góc sân phía bên phải cổng tam quan, một tượng Di Lặc Tôn Phật thật lớn được sơn thếp vàng trên hòn non bộ bằng đá núi, leo trèo đu bám trên thân Ngài là sáu đồng tử ngộ nghĩnh tượng trưng cho “Lục tặc” (tức lục căn: mắt, tai, mũi, lưỡi, thân, ý) đã được giáo hóa giác ngộ. Đối xứng với tượng Phật Di Lặc, phía góc trái là tượng Văn Thù Sư Lợi Bồ tát cũng thật cao lớn cưỡi trên lưng thanh sư, đang trong giai đoạn tô đắp sắp hoàn chỉnh. Tường thành bao quanh cổ miếu xưa kia, nay chỉ thấy còn một đoạn lộ ra bên cạnh cây đa cổ thụ có trên vài trăm tuổi nằm bên trái chánh điện.

Vòng ra phía sau lưng chánh điện, bước qua cây cầu nhỏ bằng xi-măng bắc qua một hồ cá tai tượng có bố trí các hòn non bộ xinh xắn, sẽ thấy gác nhà chuông sáu trụ nằm giữa những chậu cây cảnh được bài trí hài hòa chen lẫn với những cây bồ đề xanh rì lá, phượng vĩ đỏ lòe hoa… Tiếp tục dạo bước vào sâu phía sau chùa, được chiêm bái tượng Bạch Y Quan Âm lộ thiên với dáng vẻ thanh thoát dịu hiền đứng trên một đài cao hướng nhìn về biển Đông… Tận cùng sân sau của chùa, trên triền dốc xổ bằng những bậc tầng cấp, chợt hiện lên một khu Ô Linh Cốt được thiết kế như những dãy nhà chung cư thu nhỏ, có mái che lớp ngói hồng, bao bọc chung quanh một điện nhỏ thờ tượng Địa Tạng Vương Bồ tát, tạo nên một không khí trang nghiêm và ấm áp. Bên trong chánh điện, các tượng Phật và Bồ tát đều vàng rực lên giữa những tràng phan, bảo cái, phướn lọng, đèn hoa… Đặc biệt ở phía sau nhà hậu Tổ, nằm bên một góc im ắng là một bàn thờ đầy linh vị và di ảnh của chư hương linh ký thác, trên đó có di ảnh của Đức Từ Cung và con trai của bà là vua Bảo Đại cùng nằm ở vị trí trung tâm. Bên cạnh bàn thờ này, trên tường bên trái có treo hai khung kính lớn lồng bên trong là các thư tịch văn bản cổ giấy đã ố vàng, nhưng Hán tự vẫn còn rõ từng nét: “Đại Nam quốc – Trung hưng công thần linh vị”. Đó chính là bài vị liệt kê danh tánh của 350 vị công thần có công với triều đại nhà Nguyễn.

Từng bước chậm vãn cảnh Kỳ Viên Trung Nghĩa tự, ngắm từng vết tích xưa cũ, trông từng cảnh sắc tân kỳ, mới thấy được rằng ngôi chùa này đúng là một “khu vườn kỳ lạ khác thường”, xứng đáng khi đã được Nhà nước công nhận di tích lịch sử – văn hóa của xứ Trầm hương.

Today was our last day up in Iao. Sadly, it was pouring down rain so no pictures.

Just realized that I forgot to upload a picture I took today. Anyway, two days ago they did some work up by the site I have been doing my fieldschool. Repairing walls and all sorts of other things. They were able to planet one patch of Taro. I’ll get better shots tomorrow.

Did a couple of pictures to test out CS4 Photoshop’s Photomerger thing. So, I have 2 pictures today, was going to have an HDR photo but clouds moved to fast and someone got in my shot. Anyway, one photo uses the Windows Live Photo Gallery way and the other is using Photoshop.

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono voted in support of a federal appropriations act that helped to secure $3,065,000 in funding for Hawaii.

Maui’s ‘Iao Flood Control Project is one of six projects included in the request, which passed with a favorable 307-97 vote in the House.  The $250,000 ‘Iao allocation is expected to provide better protection for adjacent commercial and residential properties in the area.

The FY210 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act also includes $300,000 in funding to initiate the study of possible improvements to the South Maui Watershed.  The study would be aimed at reducing flood damage and protecting ocean water quality.

The South Maui Watershed includes the south slope of Haleakala, consisting of Kula and Ulupalakua, as well as the Kihei-Wailea-Makena area.   It also includes residential, commercial, industrial, and resort properties, as well as farms, ranches, and natural areas.

Other Hawaii projects slated for funding under the Act are as follows:

• $1,000,000 to demonstrate the feasibility of commercial bioenergy production at the University of Hawai‘i. The project will be conducted by the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources and the Hawai‘i Natural Energy Institute.

• $705,000 for the Army Corps of Engineers to inspect all flood damage reduction and coastal damage reduction projects in the State of Hawai‘i on an annual basis. These inspections are needed to protect against structural failure, which could result in damage to property or loss of life.

• $570,000 to support management of the state-wide harbor dredging program, hydrographic condition surveys of our harbors, and inspection of 25 navigation projects throughout Hawai‘i with federal breakwater structures.

• $240,000 to provide funding for a photovoltaic system at the Hawai‘i State Chapter Headquarters of the American Red Cross. The system will serve as a critical backup energy source in the event of a disaster.

“The main thrust behind all of these projects is ensuring the safety of Hawai‘i’s people, whether by establishing an emergency power source for the American Red Cross or determining how to best control floods and protect coastal areas.” said Congresswoman Hirono.

“Three weeks ago, I visited Haleiwa harbor and received a briefing from the harbormaster along with the Army Corps of Engineers on the work that’s being done to keep our boat entrances clear from growing underwater obstacles.  That meeting reconfirmed my belief that, as an island state, we need to remain diligent in monitoring and maintaining our waterways,” Hirono said.

In addition to funding for these projects, the energy and water bill provides $5.5 billion nationally for the Army Corps of Engineers to address water resource investment needs and $2.25 billion to increase investments in technologies that use energy more effectively and produce clean, inexpensive energy from domestic sources.

A few highlights of the bill include:   $259 million for research, development, and demonstration projects to make solar energy more affordable; $235 million for grants to improve production of alternative fuels such as cellulosic ethanol and biodiesel; and $220 million in weatherization grants to help struggling families save money and energy by improving the energy efficiency of their homes.

Found a few things today while digging. One, a rock with a red coloring on one side. Second, a tool maybe used for sharpening. Both found by me and one of the bigger finds of the day. We did find a lot of charcoal and just before we packed up, someone found a nice ash deposit and we did a core sample. Sample looks like we only need to go few more inches till we get a nice change in the dirt along with some ash.

Another day of Archeology. Today was a really clear day so took a lot more pictures. several were stitched together to make a Panoramic.

Finally brought my camera and stand to take pictures of what I have been doing for the past few weeks. We just broke ground on a new area to check out if it used to be a fire pit.

Yesterday I had the day off because it was King Kamehameha Day.  Kate had the day off because she wasn’t scheduled to work.  In the afternoon we went a few miles up the road to Iao State Park. 

 It was pretty hot in the house so I figured it would be nice and cool up there.  It was. Actually it was pretty overcast with no sun.  See?  The clouds are nice and low over the mountain:

There were lots of people there yesterday.  Look at those people on the bridge.  They are looking at either the Iao needle, a waterfall, or the pool at the bottom of the waterfall where some local people were swimming. 

I overheard some lady proclaiming, “It’s not a water waterfall.”  Hmmm…what?

We hiked along the cement path (maybe it’s called a sidewalk) for a while, then went down to the stream.  I tried to photographically capture the movement of the water but was only mildly successful.  I need to use an even slower shutter speed with a tripod next time. 

I was a little too impressed  by the moss and lichens.

For a more rugged experience and more of a “hike” we ventured off the cement walk and went on a little path through the woods.

The little path gradually became less distinct as we made our way up.  We saw these bumpy trees:

There were a bunch of them in that one spot.

This huge rock had small rocks wrapped in ti leaves.  I’m not sure what that was supposed to represent.  But I took a picture of it.

There weren’t many blooming plants, and there weren’t any ripe guava.  There were a few littered Coke cans.  But everything was lush and green.

We did obviously find our way back down after leaving the beaten path.   I’ll leave with one more picture: my artsy-fartsy one:

The Author’s Opinion #1

In The Authors Opinion I understand that work is what we do here on earth. I find it difficult to work on something that I am not passionate about. I would almost dare to say I have learned a major fact about myself, I Will Not Work if I don’t enjoy what I am doing. No I will not work for food nor shelter. Hmmm I’d go hungry huh? I’ve worked for these things before and my life was empty, meaningless.
There’s something in this universe that really loves me, it pushes me towards my goals. It will not allow me to settle or to fail. True I have had some major set back’s in life, MAJOR….. But I have never stayed down for long.
Work, I can’t believe that I will not work for food…WOW. What am I, just stubborn, just crazy?
Could it be that I really do believe in myself? YES…I really agree with the small voice that tells me I am meant to be a Star!!! Ego….. Lessons on the Ego gave me a warning not to be so seduced with myself; I choose to be a channel for the light. Riches will enter this world through me; I will allow the light to use me as a channel to allow love, healing, money and more light in to this world.
What the world needs now is love sweet love right? Well yeah, I agree but a whole lotta money would be splendid to go along with some of that love. Millions….or more!
It is what it is! We live in a universe that revolves around currency and at our stage of evolution in this great game, that currency is called money. Little pieces of printed paper…. Created to represent ……. Success, gold, happiness, FREEDOM….. Yes…FREEDOM and really….. you would not be a part of this reality (earth) if you claim that life can truly be experienced without DOLLARS!! You’d be too much… too holy, too spiritual for your own good…. I’ve been there… and you need money….PERIOD!

So I will get in line and be channel and allow currency to flow through this universe by way of me……
Sounds fun huh??? Yes, it makes me smile…. I’m starting to understand, and it feels good.
I requested passion and I got it….. Then I became frustrated because the passion had arrived and I didn’t know what to do with it all. It was simply overwhelming…that energy of Passion. Then the ideas started to flow in….. Once I got outta my own way and allowed myself to become….. (Myself…ha funny…like it’s somebody else)….. And here we are…. 14 hours later….I’m not tired but I have decided to rest!
So work is not work anymore, work is fun, its achievement, is smiles and love. It’s SPIRITUAL. Work or could I dare to say FREEDOM….. is doing something with Passion and Ideas that flow through me this is my new definition of work.
In the Authors Opinion, W-O-R-K in its conventional sense holds no weight for me anymore. Work is necessary, heck I’ve been laid off before, and when you have nothing to do you do, either one of two things happen… You either find yourself…..Or you lose yourself…….

Su visión a partir del 9/11

Esta entrada es una actualización de un artículo escrito poco después del ataque del 9/11. Lo dejamos tal como estaba salvo cambiar los tiempos verbales para hacer notar el transcurso del tiempo. Este hecho despierta globalmente una aletargada “Realpolitik” de finales de la larga “Guerra Fría”. Hemos agregado algunas definiciones y ejemplos de esta dura mega estrategia política.

¿Estados Unidos o Una Coalición?

Los hechos del 9/11 dieron lugar a un cambio muy pronunciado en la política exterior de los Estados Unidos. Lo importante desde el punto de vista de la Realpolitik es la fuerza de éste cambio en términos mundiales. Se puso  en marcha un proyecto sobre el que se “invirtieron” alrededor de 600.000 millones de dólares, una masa de dinero suficiente como para eclipsar a otros proyectos políticos en curso. Este proyecto iba pues a condicionar a todos los otros proyectos nacionales y multinacionales en marcha y a todas las economías mundiales.

Estados Unidos ha preferido como estrategia global apoyar la legitimidad de su reacción en lo que en ese momento se denominó “La Coalición”, centrada fundamentalmente en Estados Unidos y en el decidido apoyo del Reino Unido. Una vez aprobado el programa operativo para La Segunda Guerra del Golfo, las Naciones Unidas por Resolución Número 1843 crea el IAMB, Consejo Internacional de Asesoramiento y Monitoreo. Este ente fue solo un formalismo inoperante. Más involucrado fue el CPA, Gobierno Provisional de la Coalición. Esta Coalición tendría su brazo militar en el MNF-I, La Fuerza Multinacional para Irak.

En ese momento creíamos que podíamos intentar predecir posibles futuros y cursos de acción. Por ejemplo dar respuesta a preguntas elementales tales como cuánto tiempo van a estar las tropas de la Coalición en el Golfo Pérsico y en sus alrededores: nos atrevimos a pronosticar que todo el tiempo que estimaran necesario los principales actores del proyecto, Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido. Los proyectos tienen inercias en función de sus masas y de sus cantidades de movimiento y las masas movilizadas en éste caso eran enormes. La inversión se fue concretando fundamentalmente en proyectos militares y de seguridad que contaron inicialmente con plena unanimidad en el frente interno de Estados Unidos y algo más limitada en el Reino Unido y con desconfianza en el resto de países miembros de la Coalición. Nadie podía imaginar en ese entonces que luego de semejante paso las tropas movilizadas iban a retornar prontamente a sus bases.

 ¿De la Unipolaridad hacia la bipolaridad?

 A toda acción le corresponde una reacción igual y contraria

Esto significó también que con alta probabilidad se iría formando, por reacción, un proyecto opuesto al proyecto Anglo-Americano, que iba a tener que movilizar también, en dinero y/o en “especies”, una masa similar. Esto significaba también que crecía la probabilidad de una Cuarta Guerra Mundial, si consideramos que la tercera fue la Guerra Fría. En oportunidad de esa tensa tercera guerra, las dos potencias hegemónicas o polos del mundo bipolar de esos entonces acumularon tanto poder bélico de destrucción masiva que si el enfrentamiento hubiera pasado de su etapa fría a la caliente no estaríamos aquí para contarlo. La tensión llegó a ser tan fuerte que uno de los polos, la ex Unión Soviética, se desintegró por si sola en forma espontánea, aparentemente en la cúspide de su poder político y militar.

A partir de allí, quedó el mundo con una desorientada unipolaridad que siguió creciendo, por inercia y por ausencia de oposición, en poder económico, en poder financiero y en tecnología, dando lugar a lo que hoy conocemos como Globalización y a la exacerbación de formas patológicas de capitalismo.

Los actores de las guerras son funcionalmente siempre los mismos

Tenemos hoy (en tiempos del 9/11) un mundo mucho más informado y con depósitos llenos de armas convencionales y de destrucción masiva que supuestamente fueron construidas para ser “usadas”. Estados Unidos se vio tentado a seguir sustentando una peligrosa “unilateralidad” y por cuestiones de seguridad intentó, sin mucho éxito hasta ahora, controlar el armamento del mundo. Dentro de éste complejo, sombrío y poco estudiado panorama geopolítico, nos íbamos a encontrar con actores e intereses de todo tipo que no son nuevos. En efecto, el papel que en las dos primeras guerras mundiales desempeñaban los grandes empresarios de armamentos y de productos químicos industriales, tales como Krupp y Bayer en Alemania,  los vamos a ver representados hoy por grandes corporaciones como Microsoft y Novartis respectivamente, y desde el lado de las reacciones populares extremas vamos a ver al sabotaje y a los anarquistas reemplazados por el terrorismo.

Hacia un Orden Mundial compartido

 Hoy (en tiempos del 9/11), salvo apoyos nacionales erráticos, débiles y circunstanciales, puede decirse que no hay naciones ni pueblos que se opongan abiertamente al proyecto Anglo-Americano pero creo que es muy probable que se vaya formando un bloque antagónico cada vez más visible, un segundo polo que restablezca una “entente” mundial más equilibrada y justa, que podría llegar a ser la semilla de un nuevo orden mundial, pero diferente del “Nuevo Orden Internacional” (NWO, Nuevo Orden Mundial) imaginado por George W. Bush padre durante su presidencia, centralizado en Estados Unidos, pues ello no sería ya posible en un Mundo Uno. Hoy, estamos en presencia de una verdadera “guerra asimétrica”, con Estados Nacionales por un lado y por el otro grupos y bandas armadas, terroristas y no terroristas. La Coalición – o su metamorfosis- debe entender que con o sin terrorismo, se va a formar al menos un segundo polo de opinión mundial  – casi podríamos decir que ya se estaba formando previo a los hechos detonantes del 9/11- y que la formación de un segundo polo visible es infinitamente mejor que un escenario de guerra asimétrica, de pánico generalizado y sin nadie visible a quien enfrentar.

 Sería un error que la Coalición piense – e influya en la Opinión Pública del mundo Occidental para que comparta su pensamiento -  que el estar cobijados bajo un mundo unipolar asegura la libertad, la racionalidad, y la ética y por el contrario: en el resto del mundo, fuera de ese cobijo, espera la intemperie, la barbarie, la irracionalidad, la esclavitud. Esa Coalición ha querido convencerse que piensa y difunde como paradigma que lucha por la superación de la especia humana en contra de los que buscan el retorno a la edad de piedra. Por otra parte, la guerra asimétrica juega a favor del terrorismo, que por su invisibilidad, convierte a cada terrorista en un soldado tremendamente eficiente. Un ejemplo, el terror provocado por el ántrax, donde unas pocas personas enviando unos pocos sobres con o sin esporas de ántrax produjeron escenas de pánico colectivo y pérdidas económicas multimillonarias, en una relación de varias decenas de mil a uno.

Decimos Hoy

La realpolitik nos plantea un problema moral y ético. A la corta o a la larga la política fundamentada en el principio cínico de “el fin justifica los medios” – véase “Consecuencialismo”- toca las fibras más íntimas de nuestro ser y pone en tela de juicio la unidad de nuestra conciencia y la coherencia de nuestra conducta: una moral como individuo y otra como eventual líder o gobernante.

Una cuidadosa lectura de los hechos de famosos políticos expertos en realpolitik: Nicolás Maquiavelo, El Primer Ministro Chanakya del Imperio Maurayana denominado el “Maquiavelo Hindú”, el Cardenal Duque Richelieu –Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu- Primer Ministro del Rey Luis XIII de Francia, el Primer Canciller alemán Otto von Bismarck, Adolf Hitler, el Primer Ministro británico Neville Chamberlain, Henry Alfred Kissinger y de la lectura de obras de intelectuales que no solo la justifican sino que la consideran un arte político necesario para la evolución y supervivencia humana, tales como: John Stuart Mills, Jeremy Bentham, Peter Singer, Philip Noel Pettit, y Shelly Kagan, nos hace reflexionar y hasta podría producirnos un fuerte sentimiento de rechazo.

Veamos algunos ejemplos de acotaciones de Henry Kissinger:

• Los soldados son animales estúpidos usados como peones (se supone de ajedrez) en política exterior;
• La mayor parte de las políticas exteriores a lo largo de la historia y de cualquier país, han sido pensadas e instrumentadas por líderes que se oponían a los argumentos de los expertos;
• Lo ilegal lo hacemos en forma inmediata. Lo inconstitucional toma un poco más de tiempo;
• En clara referencia a Chile, gobierno de Salvador Allende): No veo por qué debemos quedamos parados observando como un país marcha hacia el comunismo a causa de la irresponsabilidad de su propia gente. Hay temas que son demasiado importantes como para que los decidan los votantes;
• Aún un paranoico tiene enemigos reales;
• Me encanta mirar la TV alemana haciéndome un reportaje, pues finalmente puedo hablar sin acento. Y me escucho como hablando con acento sueco;
• ¡El poder es el mejor afrodisíaco!;
• Nadie podrá ganar la batalla de los sexos. Hay demasiada fraternidad con el enemigo;

 Algunos interrogantes comunes

• ¿El crecimiento conjunto y armonioso de adversarios reales o potenciales seria sistemáticamente posible?; Según la realpolitik, a la larga o a la corta, hay que exterminar a los más débiles y/o potencialmente peligrosos.
• ¿La moral y los principios morales serian un lastre en la política?. Por lo que nos dicen o dan a entender  la “historia oficial” y los medios, respectivamente influenciados por los victoriosos de turno, sí son efectivamente un lastre. Desafortunadamente si el ganador es el que permanece y el perdedor el que física o virtualmente desaparece no hay manera de analizar qué hubiera sucedido si el cinismo hubiera sido reemplazado por la comprensión y la compasión.
• ¿Es realmente mucho más difícil ser bueno que malo?. Todo parece indicar que sí y esto lleva agua al molino del “Consecuencialismo” implícito en el fin justifica los medios: el hombre sería una bestia Hobbiana que al decir de Bentham: busca maximizar la felicidad y minimizar la pena.
• ¿Es coherente ser buena persona como individuo y mala persona como líder?. No es coherente pero si un comportamiento demasiado frecuente en política.
• Una típica descarga de conciencias sería: Lo que es bueno para “mi gente”, “mis amigos”, aunque malo para mis adversarios y enemigos ¿lo hago o no lo hago?. Si lo hago, a la larga mi gente se va a poner contenta, mas si no lo hago mi gente va a comenzar a desconfiar de mi conducción y mis enemigos se envalentonarán. Una actitud distinta podría ser: si por comprensión y compasión decido no hacerlo podría intentar justificar mi decisión ante mi gente y amigos e incluso podría estar preparado para disuadir los avances y envalentonamientos de los enemigos. ¿Podría ser este un razonamiento “a lo Obama”?

 Consecuencialismo

El consecuencialismo propone que una acción moralmente correcta sería aquella que produce un “buen” resultado, a diferencia de la “deontología” que propone que lo correcto o incorrecto de una acción deriva no del resultado sino del carácter del acto en sí mismo. También se diferencia de la “ética de la virtud” centrada en el carácter del agente  más que en la naturaleza o la consecuencia de la acción. Veamos un ejemplo: Mentir. El consecuencialismo arguye que mentir está mal por las consecuencias negativas del acto. La deontología podría argüir que mentir es siempre incorrecto, independientemente de potenciales bondades derivadas de mentir. Finalmente, un partidario de la ética de la virtud argüiría que  la simple decisión de estar dispuesto a mentir habla del carácter –incorrecto- de la persona y de su comportamiento moral.

Política del Poder

ES un término afín y a veces confundido con realpolitik. Es un modelo de relaciones internacionales “pre-beligerante” y de atemorización mutua entre naciones, un decir “aquí estamos nosotros” mediante señales las más de las veces amenazantes y priorizando los interés nacionales sobre los de los demás. Ejemplos de estas amenazas son: amenaza nuclear, bacteriológica, hambrunas, exageradas militarizaciones de fronteras, guerras e invasiones preventivas pretextando problemas de seguridad nacional,  sanciones económicas,  maniobras y campañas extorsivas internacionales, operaciones encubiertas, siembra de guerras asimétricas, fomentar directa e indirectamente que los potenciales enemigos se desangren, “pase de la pelota” eludiendo posibilidades de mayor confrontación, y muchas variantes derivadas de la “guerra fría”.

Noopolitik

Finalmente tenemos este neologismo surgido en los albores de la Sociedad de la Información sustentada en redes. Aconsejamos leer al respecto el trabajo The Emergence of Noopolitik – Toward an American, Information Strategy, Emergencia de la Noopolítica Hacia una Estrategia Informativa para Estados Unidos de América, de John Arquilla, experto en Redes Militares y David Ronfeldt, preparado para el Departamento de Defensa de Estados Unidos como propuesta de Sistema Informativo de los Estados Unidos de América, año 1999, por la Organización RAND.

Fundamentalmente trata del dominio y control del Ciberespacio y de las distintas formas, tácticas y estrategias de las guerras informáticas –i-wars-. Ver también el proyecto TIA, Total Information Awareness, Sistema de Detección Total de la Información del Ciberespacio, de la IAO, Information Awareness Office, Oficina de Detección Total de la Información, perteneciente a DARPA, Agencia de Proyectos Avanzados Para la Defensa Nacional (Estados Unidos de América), madre de la actual Internet.

IAO TANK SITE WELL DEVELOPMENT

The county of Maui completed an environmental assessment for the development of a Tank Site Well at Iao.  The site is located approximately 2 and a half miles southwest of Wailuku at the already existing 3 million gallon Iao Tank site.  The purpose of the proposed outfitting of the site with a pump and controls is to distribute pumping over a wider area of the aquifer.

WEST OLINDA TANK REPLACEMENT

The County of Maui, Department of Water Supply (DWS) proposes constructing a new 300,000-gallon concrete tank in Olinda.  The West Olinda tank would replace the existing 50,000 gallon tank and is expected to improve the life efficiency of booster pump systems.  In addition, the new tank will provide storage capacity for another 30 to 50 years.

De Internationale Arbeidsorganisatie (IAO) veroordeelt ons land voor de criteria die het hanteert om vakbonden als representatief te erkennen omdat die criteria niet objectief zijn. Het systeem is volgens het IAO derhalve strijdig “met de elementaire beginselen van syndicale vrijheid”. Dat meldt Roger Blanpain, emeritus hoogleraar arbeidsrecht aan de K.U.Leuven op basis van het jaarverslag van het Comité van Deskundigen van het IAO. Om representatief te zijn in België moet een vakbond 50.000 leden tellen, voor het gehele land opgericht zijn en in de Nationale Arbeidsraad zetelen. De minister van werkgelegenheid beslist echter discretionair en soeverein over wie in de Nationale Arbeidsraad zetelt. Representativiteit geeft het ABVV, het ACV en ACLVB een syndicaal monopolie. Ze verwerven hierdoor het recht om bindende CAO’s af te sluiten, kandidaten voor te dragen voor de ondernemingsraad, te zetelen in de paritaire comités, arbeidsrechtbanken en worden bovendien ook financieel gesteund door de overheid en werkgever

Het beleid van de Belgische staat om de vakbonden aan zich te binden, hen een monopolie te geven en zo dus te neutraliseren is, zoals je hierboven kunt lezen, veroordeeld door de IAO. Initiatieven zoals CAO’s, de NAR en het sociaal overleg (corporatistische ideëen) vallen uiteraard alleen maar goed te keuren. Maar niet wanneer die bereikt worden door instellingen die niet de personen vertegenwoordigen die zij menen te vertegenwoordigen.

Tijd voor eenheidsvakbonden per sector en gedaan met het syndicaal monopolie van de grote drie. Slechts wanneer de vakbonden opgesplist worden per sector, en vervolgens in elke sector één grote vakbond vormen, zal de sociale strijd op een eerlijke manier gevoerd worden. Een staalarbeider dient voor zijn arbeidersvoorwaarden immers alleen te onderhandelen met de werkgevers van de staalsector met de staat als bemiddelaar en desnoods als scheidsrechter. Daar moeten geen landbouwers, leerkrachten of bedienden aan te pas komen. En omgekeerd ook niet natuurlijk.

Le CAPC de Bordeaux accueille à partir de fin novembre une exposition consacrée au psychédélisme en France depuis 1968. L’expo est accompagnée par un festival de trois jours organisé par alifib. On y verra notamment Expo 70, Turzi, Skaters, et les mythiques Ame Son dont l’unique album sur BYG est un des fleurons psychédéliques / free rock / prog du tournant des années 60 et 70. Les voir jouer en 2008 est un étrange raccourci spatio-temporel. Ame Son jouera d’ailleurs à Paris jeudi 27 novembre au Chiquito (plus d’infos sur : www.myspace.com/alifibgigs). En France, quels étaient les principaux tenants du psychédélisme en 68 ?

1968 est une date-clé pour l’émergence, dans différents domaines artistiques, de différents artistes et groupes que nous avons rassemblés autour du mot d’ordre psychédélique, malgré toutes leurs différences. Même si les premiers disques importants de rock psychédélique paraissent en France à partir de 1970, dès 68 la scène française est sous tension : Jean-Jacques Lebel a réalisé l’année précédente un happening avec la participation du groupe Soft Machine, le groupe Gong est en gestation, qui travaillera rapidement avec l’artiste Martial Raysse, les cinéastes Jérôme Laperrousaz ou Peter Földes, le compositeur Bernard Parmegiani, les Films Zanzibar (Garrel, Clémenti, Serge Bard, Patrick Deval…) sont fondés cette année là et incluent les artistes Frédéric Pardo, Olivier Mosset ou Daniel Pommereulle…
Tous ces artistes naviguent entre les disciplines artistiques, expérimentent, collaborent autour d’une idée directrice, celle de l’expérience. D’où le peu “d’oeuvres” présentes dans l’exposition mais la mise en scène de traces, de films, d’événements pour tenter d’être au plus près de ce que pouvait représenter un tel moment de créativité.
Mais nous n’avons voulu, à aucun moment, être dans la nostalgie des années 60, et c’est pourquoi il nous a semblé essentiel de nous ancrer dans le présent et faire de l’intérêt des artistes d’aujourd’hui pour cette période une manière active de rendre vivante cette période. Nous n’avons surtout pas souhaité proposé un panorama mais proposer des pistes : la jeune artiste Lili Reynaud Dewar, qui travaille entre sculpture et performance, très intéressée par les notions de communauté, de pop et d’utopie a réalisé une scénographie qui met en scène la mémoire de cette période d’une manière extraordinaire et fait de l’exposition une espèce d’oeuvre d’art totale qui inclue les formes rejouées, les archives, les concerts en une immense installation, à la manière d’une image dans la laquelle on plonge… Les groupes Turzi, Principles of Geometry ou Feedback 66 sont des groupes français qui actualisent chacun à leur manière lors du festival la “tradition” psychédélique sans la singer aucunement. Un light-show sera même rejoué lors du concert de Turzi, avec la participation de Tim Blake (clavier de Gong) et d’artistes qui ont fondé l’un des groupes de light-shows les plus importants de la période, Open Light… Une installation vidéo hypnotique en forme de vortex des artistes autrichiens Barbara Doser & Hofstetter Kurt constituent à l’entrée de l’exposition une extension vers un autre domaine…

Que reste-t-il des années psychédéliques aujourd’hui ? Y a-t-il un héritage ou une descendance des expérimentations musicales, visuelles, graphiques des années 60 et 70 ?

La chronologie est complexe, et le temps n’est malheureusement pas linéaire. Par exemple, le terme “psychédélique” a été employé pour la première fois par Aldous Huxley dès 1957, c’est à dire dix ans avant le Summer Of Love. Déjà bien avant lui, différentes figures avaient expérimenté les drogues hallucinogènes, et en avaient établi le récit.
Et, de nos jours, on peut considérer sans aucun doute comme psychédélique différentes formes d’art récentes.
Cette expérience traverse l’espace et le temps, ce que nous montre la multitude des artistes, groupes et collectifs actifs aujourd’hui, et dont une part est présente dans l’exposition. Il est tout à fait juste de parler de musique psychédélique aujourd’hui, en 2008, quarante ans après, même si cette musique revêt aussi des caractères très différents, informée de l’histoire des formes depuis quatre décennies.
Pour autant, l’ambition est la même : expérimenter, permettre d’accéder à une expérience autre, celle de la transe, du bruit, de la répétition entre autres, et de partager cette expérience collectivement, voire de manière communautaire.
Il me semble que la chose la plus significative est en l’occurrence cette manière dont plusieurs artistes aujourd’hui proposent une vision du monde mis à distance, créent des univers dont tous les éléments sont pensés et qui sont comme un miroir tendu face au monde actuel, une parodie en quelque sorte, qui proposent quelque chose comme autant de contre-mondes au coeur même de la réalité. C’est une autre manière de penser la teneur politique de l’art : faire “un pas de côté”.

En quoi le psychédélisme français différait-il des autres (US, UK, etc.) ?

Tout d’abord, “psychédélisme” est un terme problématique, auquel nous préférons celui “d’expérience psychédélique”, celle, comme nous l’avons dit, de la méditation ou de la drogue. L’art, qui opte pour différentes médiations pour restituer les visions produites par cette expérience d’un côté, ou recréer chez le spectateur les conditions de l’expérience psychédélique de l’autre, peut à la fois peu et beaucoup face à cela. Sa définition par catégories (arts visuels, sonores, performatifs) le limite par définition.
L’art psychédélique tente alors de proposer une nouvelle fonction rituelle de l’art qui fait de la scène (et du concert de rock psychédélique en particulier) le point de convergence évident de ces questionnements. D’où la forme de l’exposition que nous organisons au CAPC, qui opte pour un certain nombre de scènes qui sont activées par différents actes live. C’est dans cette temporalité que se situe l’expérience psychédélique, alors que se mêlent sons, images, et corps dans un même dispositif.
En France, la scène psychédélique prend une forme toute particulière.
Elle est d’un côté influencée quelques années après les Etats-Unis et l’Angleterre par les expériences psychédéliques anglo-saxonnes (à partir de 1967-68, grâce entre autres aux articles d’Alain Dister qui part alors en Californie) soit au moins deux ans après les Etats-Unis.
Mais le psychédélisme se développe en France sur un terreau singulier, grâce aux expériences des avant-gardes Lettristes, situationnistes ou néo-dadaïstes, la présence de la Beat Generation à Paris dès les années 1950, ou encore les expérimentations optiques du Groupe de Recherche en Arts Visuels ou la critique du Pop Art par les Nouveaux Réalistes. La scène psychédélique française naît dans un contexte de révolution politique en crise contre le conformisme bourgeois et la répression des années De Gaulle, contrairement à l’Angleterre qui offre des espaces de liberté réels pour la contre-culture. La poésie et la littérature, le happening, le free-jazz sont les parents directs du psychédélisme français, qui vont être rapidement métissés d’influences multiples, allant de la Pataphysique au cinéma expérimental d’Etienne O’Leary, des light-shows de Mark Boyle (qui oeuvre pour Soft Machine entre autres) en passant par le Pop, la musique orientale, les spiritualités orientales, et la fantasme de La Route. Le magazine Actuel emblématise cette convergence d’intérêts qui mêle esthétique et politique, pensée et délire potache, communauté et activisme. Le psychédélisme en France est finalement assez loin des clichés du Flower Power et du Summer of Love hippie, il est bien plus sombre, politisé et brutal, car il se développé plus tardivement, dans un contexte plus dur, et informé de différentes influences plus critiques.

Ya, jadi hasilnya itu adalah diambil 14 dari 30 peserta pelatihan tahap 1. Harusnya 15, tetapi karena ada satu peserta (Alfred Virad Abidondifu) yang mengikuti APAO di Kirgiztan, maka kuota penerimaan untuk tahap 2 berkurang 1. Akan tetapi apabila Alfred berhasil mendapatkan penghargaan di ajang APAO, maka dia secara otomatis akan masuk ke pelatihan tahap 2 IAO/IOAA.

Sekedar informasi, tahun ini akan dijaring 5 siswa sebagai peserta IOAA dan 2 peserta sebagai peserta IAO.
