We have finally, after a long wait, released a new podcast. This is in my opinion our best one yet and it is the first to be wirtten recorded and edited using Apple’s Garageband 6. This edition includes tales of our lab’s building a G3 iBook from spare parts, A short review of the Apple iPod Touch, information about the recently announced USB 3.0 and much more. This podcast was recorded with corresponding visual effects, and high quality compression. Will work on any iPod and almost every other MP3 player. This edition also contains a new theme song that works best onvery high quality headphones. For any comments or questions you may email me at forrestesoftware@hotmail.com.

I was just reading a cool article on Wikipedia about the history of audio recording and stumbled acr

I was just reading a cool article on Wikipedia about the history of audio recording and stumbled across an article about audiophile equipment. I’ve seen some of this equipment; $5000+ phonograph record players, expensive tube-based amplifiers, and expensive CD players with remotes the size of a laptop. Are they really worth all that money?

I personally listen to a lot of music, and I enjoy equipment that sounds “accurate”, not “warm”, or “lifelike”. I am the kind of person who loves to listen to near-field audio reference monitors. Call me crazy, but flat frequency response is sexy. I love to sit in front of a pair of KRK Rokit Powered 5 studio-reference monitors and listen to my CDs played through an iBook G3 with a 24-bit audio interface. So what happens along this chain of audio goodness?

First, Apple’s iTunes software takes my 16-bit/44.1KHz audio CD and dithers it to 24-bit/44.1KHz making the response much quicker and allowing sounds to be easily distinguishable from each other. It also takes out the harshness in the treble area that occurs sometimes at 16-bit. I think it also “re-inflates” my 24-bit master CDs so they sound a little more true to the original. Case in point; I just bought new Polydor releases of ABBA, and they were mastered at 24-bit. It sounds like I am listening to the original analog or digital master sometimes! It leaves my iBook G3 through an M-Audio GrooveLab 24-bit audio interface at a 108db noise level with hardly any noise at all. I direct connect two KRK Rokit Powered 5 studio reference monitors via balanced inputs with 1/4″ cables. I control the volume from my iBook G3.

I get totally clean, proper bass and all of the sounds are even, expressive, and very accurate. I hate muddy bass, or the kind of bass that rattles the walls. I love treble that comes right to the edge but doesn’t hurt the ears after listening for twenty minutes or so. This setup only cost me a few hundred dollars and it’s 95% as accurate as the professional sound equipment used to master records in control booths at sound studios. It’s probably as good or better than all that expensive audiophile stuff that probably colors the music in ways that a normal person wouldn’t notice. In other words, I like it. It’s honest sound.

I guess if you want to spend $5000 for an audio system go ahead. I love hearing music as close to the artist’s original intentions as possible, so I prefer accuracy rather than any coloring of tone or accurate delivery. No audio system is 100% perfect, but mine is close enough.
