Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)

The sub zero heroes are back.Scrat is still trying to nab the ever elusive nut, while maybe finding true love. Manny and Ellie await the birth of their mini-mammoth. Diego the saber toothed tiger wonders if he’s growing too soft and Sid the sloth gets into trouble when he creates his own makeshift family by hijacking some dinosaur eggs. On a mission to rescue the hapless Sid, the gang ventures into a mysterious underground world, where they have some close encounters with dinosaurs,battle flora and fauna, run amuck and meet a relentless, one eyed, dino-hunting weasel named Buck.

I’m visiting Jenny and her family from 7/8-13 in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Jenny and I have known each other for 19 years – since August 1990 when Jenny moved to Austria for one year as part of an exchange program (AFS) to live with my family and attend high school (BGD) in Dornbirn. It was great having her as a sister that year and after she moved back to Florida and  I continued living in Austria (and other places) we loosely stayed in touch throughout the years. When I moved to the U.S. 7 years ago that’s when we started to see each other on an almost regular basis. When I was living in New York I visited her about once or twice a year – I remember her wedding, her baby shower for Madison, two thanksgivings, one Christmas, and numerous other visits in February or in the summer   It’s been really nice to live so “close” and be able to visit her so often over the last 7 years. Somehow Jenny really is like a sister to me and her family is somehow family to me. Thanks, Jenny! I’m so glad we met!

I spent the days with Jenny, her daugher Madison (who is 2 1/2 now and such a cute girl), their two dogs (Jake and Zach) and their cat   On Sunday Ed joined us to go to “Lion Country Safari” where we were having a lot of fun – especially in the water park   Jenny and I went to the movies twice: Ice Age III ( a little scarier than the first two, especially considering it’s a children’s movie) on Thursday and “Bruno” today. OMG, “Bruno” was quite hilarious! I have never seen a movie like this (I haven’t seen “Borat, I must admit, though) and seeing such a movie in the States was even more unexpected. Anyway, I enjoyed both movies for very different reasons and both movies were fun – again for very different reasons

Tomorrow I’ll be flying back to New York – to meet more friends

PS: On the flight from New York to Miami on Wednesday- just as we were about to take off – there was the following announcment: “WHOSE BABY is this in the middle of the isle? We’re about to take off! Please, take your baby!!! The plane is about to take off! Take the baby if it’s yours!!!”

Having a great weekends ahead. Back to my weekly movie since I am back from China.

Watched it over at AMK Hub Cathay. Ever since, nowaday, Cathay is my No. 1 cinema that I will go.  First time experiencing 3-D effect of movie. Feeling fresh, but after awhile, feeling uncomfortable with the 3D spec on for 1.5 hours. After which, home sweet home.

Revenge of the Fallen

Watched it together with the group to Suzhou. Again, watching it over at AMK Cathay. Well, rating for this movie, I would be giving 8/10. Its was a great movie, so I think most guys out there will fancy with Transformers. So, conclusion – Thumb UP! After 2.5 hours of transformers, we proceeded on the nearby S11 for dinner. Then after which, guess what did we do? Since its over at AMK, we went over to Sin Ming Rd there for Prawn Fishing.

Though I stayed quite near there, yesterday was my first time going over there. Spending 6 hours of prawn fishing, result of the numbers of catches was not bad.  Cool. Around 6 am, everybody home sweet home.

Right now, I am staying home. Perhaps not going out already. As, i came home too late this morning. Watching Hongkong drama right now, “The Burning Flame III”.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Review
A perfectly acceptable purchase… if you’re a little kid.

Is it a Game of the Year contender? No, but Ice Age shouldn’t be written off as movie cash-in, either.

Time to make the dinosaurs extinct… again.

Classifying the gameplay can be a bit difficult. In the beginning, it’s pretty much a straight platformer with you taking Sid the Sloth through the paces — baby-proofing the wooly mammoth nursery, battling hedgehog-looking dudes, and collecting fruit to be used as currency. However, the deeper you get, the more there is to do. Later levels have you playing in a shooting gallery where you blast passing dinos with your plant shooter, flying pterodactyls in massive dogfights as Buck, and plowing through side-scrolling levels as Scrat.

This variety is appreciated and a nice change of pace, but in the end it won’t do much for the older players among us because the game’s pretty frickin’ easy. You have a health meter in the upper-left corner that’ll deplete when you get hit or whatever, but there are plenty of strawberries to pick up to refill that meter as well as the ability to purchase upgrades. From there, it’s just hitting bad guys, learning where to roll your egg so you don’t die, and so on.

The fact that there isn’t any challenge to the game makes the title a bit ho-hum, and that feeling isn’t helped by the fact that the story is all over the place. If you haven’t seen the latest movie, you’re not going to fully understand what’s going on here. Each level opens with the camera set on some cave drawings depicting the events of the film while Sid and Diego tell the story to the baby wooly mammoths. Usually they do a super-summary of the movie part and then pitch it to whatever videogame event was supposed to be happening at the same time. If you’ve seen the flick, that’s great; if not, you might be lost because no one’s ever really introduced that well and sometimes it’s hard to see how your videogame event fits in with the bigger picture; Diego’s pretty much a forgotten story thread, but that might be for the best because his voice-a-like is so bad.

Another stumbling block for this title is repetition. Having to roll an egg down a snowy mountain via Sid’s logrolling-like skills is fun enough, but having to do it three different times back to back to back is a bit much. Individual levels limp on like this as well — I have to shoot down 25 pterodactyls, 10 eyeballs, and fly through 10 smoke rings? How many times to I have to shoot this rock above the final boss? Let me finish the game already!

Fire Makes It Better

Even if the game’s disjointedness gets you down, you can take the gameplay elsewhere. There are a number of challenges for you to tackle, which are races to see how fast you can get through a level with just one life to live. On top of that, there’s actually a healthy sampling of multiplayer modes for you and your kiddie friends to try out. These eight modes — Sloth Barge (knock your ball-rolling opponent off the platform), Dino Stomp (have colored the most tiles by the end of a game), etc. — each have a bunch of different variations and are available for between two and four players but you’ll need the appropriate number of controllers to play. Again, a game of Sloth Says isn’t the most difficult thing in the world, but if your child is all about Ice Age, this is definitely a good way for him or her to kill some time with their friends. Plus, it keeps them from doing drugs and dropping out of elementary school… probably.

Closing Comments
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is a game that should satisfy the franchise’s young fan base. It’s got the characters they know and love, it’s got a bunch of different gameplay types bundled together to keep hold of short attention spans, and it shouldn’t be too difficult. Still, the game probably won’t appeal to players outside of that limited demographic — it’s way too easy, characters float on top of stuff, some of the voices are annoying, and so on. I personally enjoyed the variety of gameplay and chasing the the best times in the challenge modes, but I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone but an Ice Age super-fan under the age of 10.

It’s raining so heavily today. Do I hate heavy rains? The answer is both Yes and No. I love rains till the time I don’t get stuck in the middle of the drain water or some car splashes the dirty water right on my face. It’s Saturday so I can afford to sit in my balcony and enjoy the lovely rain. There are very few things in life that are better than watching the rain drops falling on the palm trees. It’s just great to sip Assam team admiring the beautiful rains.

The rain did irritate me a bit today. I couldn’t go to watch Ice Age III because the roads were flooded with water. Another problem is that it becomes virtually impossible to get auto rickshaw or cab during monsoons in Mumbai. But the beauty of the monsoon rains is worth suffering this much trouble.

BTW I made another mistake of watching Kambakht Ishq today; like New York wasn’t enough. I had stopped watching Hindi movies, but some good movies like DevD and Gulaal made me rethink about my decision. I had started feeling really good about Bollywood. But, alas, the feeling couldn’t last any longer.  How can you not stop watching Hindi movies after watching movies like Kambakht Ishq and New York? Both are full of icy dialogues. I felt embarrassed watching these movies.

If there is anything that Bollywood could teach you is to keep patience

B : To oppose against the rising costs

A : WHAT !!!! Not for any Mandir or any religious Land issue ??????????

Me : Means we dont have to come to office tomorrow ?? I can go with my son to his skating rink !!

B : Yes.. no petty Mandir Issue.. No hindu muslim no insult of any saint, no insult of any religion, its just to oppose against rising costs

Me : Means we dont have to come to office tomorrow ?? Rite… !

A : Who is calling this bandh… ?

 Clerk : Congress… !!

Me : Arre bhai… can you guys see me… is tomorrow a holiday ??? in office or do we have to come ???

A : How can congress call it… they are the ruling party… !!

B : They are ruling party in centre not in this state… in MP BJP is ruling party

Me : Answer my question… Is tomorrow a holiday ??

A : Is this Bandh nation wide ??

B : Dont know…

Clerk : Well Congress calling a Bandh wont be effective.. this is a BJP state… !! rite…

Me : What… why cant it be effective… this is a common issue

Clerk : Its a common issue… not a religious issue you idiot…

Me : I ll call and say they are not allowing me to come to office…. there must be a bandh… the best thing is after the morning bandh things open in the evening and I can go to a restaurant or a movie… Ice Age III is here…

B : He he he… boss also lives in the same area… !! he will know…

Me (crest fallen) : This bandh issue is totally ridiculous… !! If prices are increasing why should I close my office closed… infact I should be working harder so that I can earn more to face this crisis of rising costs… shouldnt I ??

 A : Suddenly you are concerned about something other than the holiday… !!

Me : well since you all say its not going to be an effective Bandh… I might as well question it…

Today morning I came to office unstopped, unscratched and unopposed… as I entered our export section…

Y : Arre… aaj to Bandh tha na… ????

Me : Bahot kaam hai… isliye aa gaya…

Y : haan.. haan… apne blog ke comments ko reply karna hai… Bahot kaam hai…

It would have been so much fun staying at home and accompanying sonnie to his skating rink, watching Ice Age III in the after noon and then some nice dinner at a restaurant… Instead here I am on saturday working full day…
