Tonight is my 2nd-last night in Japan. I’m not really sure what to say to this besides “wow.” Not “wow, already,” because the act of returning to Tokyo made it clear to me in advance that the trip was almost over. Also not “wow, finally,” because apart from the odd disappointing destination, things have been pretty good. Anyway, the last two days.

Yesterday I went to Akihabara Electric Town, aptly nicknamed nerdvana by someone I know online. In my last post, I said “I’m under budget, so maybe I can catch up by buying geeky things.” Akihabara had no problem supplying me with enough geeky things, but I restrained myself and didn’t buy some things I saw, for reasons of “I’ll never use/wear this.” If my PS2 could play NTSC-J games, believe me I would have bought the International versions of several Square Enix games. And God Hand. When I get back I’ll probably just buy the NTSC-U/C version.

Also in Akihabara, I found English instructions for the Gundam game I previously mentioned, Kidō Senshi Gundam: Senjō no Kizuna. I forked out some money and played a few rounds, it’s crazy fun 4v4 action in the original Gundam setting. Virtual On’s got nothing on this. I dominated my first couple newbie matches but once I got to players closer to my level I started losing hard. I seem to have always had the high score on my team though. How about that?

I never found any Mega Man figures, but I did get a Mega Man Zero 3 strategy guide, which is written with furigana, so I think I’ll try to translate it in my spare time, develop my language skills. I’ve always learned best by doing. The furigana is important, as trying to decipher kanji I’ve never seen before would be an exercise in inefficiency at best.

On the way back from Akihabara, I stopped at a noodle place within Suidōbashi station for dinner, it was yummy and as often I burned my tongue by trying to eat too fast.

Today I went to check out the Sony building. It wasn’t open when I arrived at Ginza station, so I wandered towards Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace grounds. Since the Imperial Family resides there, very little of it was accessible to the public but what I saw was all very well kept and pretty. Across the street was a park full of fountains that put on various shows of water, it was nice to sit and watch the waterworks for a while.

Finally I made my way back to the Sony building after a brief arcade stop. It was basically a several floor showroom of Sony products, not really worth the time for me to go since I had no plans to bring a new TV, camera, or PSP back to Canada with me.

So, off to Tokyo Tower. At the base of the tower is a four level building with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The tower itself has two observatories, both with different and interesting views. It was pretty busy though, and hyperactive kids abounded. Still good times.

For lunch/dinner I had pizza and for dessert, a cool waffle/ice cream combo. Check it out in the photos, it was delicious. I would have gotten another crepe (there was a crepe place nearby) but that waffle bowl just looked too good not to try.

Tomorrow’s my last sightseeing day. What to do?

Okay so I must admit this was my first attempt at making my own recipe..from scratch. I did a little research but obviously not the right kind because it was a fail. I suppose not a complete failure since it was edible and not too bad tasting..but it didn’t quite turn out. This was my attempt at making a healthier chicken pot pie..

Yep that’s what it should like after you eat it, and see it coming back the other way. Gross. I was trying to use yogurt and it coagulated. I think I would need to heat it up slowly? Any thoughts?

I added a little smart balance and flour and it thickened up. I was getting a little flustered trying to figure all of this out..but I pressed on. Imagine those people who have already lost the game but keep playing to hang on to their dignity…that was me. Good thing this is a healthy living blog and not just a food blog. This is why I am more of a baker!

Lessons learned:

Practice makes perfect, and I need to do more research!

I had made a pot of half-caf coffee earlier and drank half of the hot mug, and used the rest to make an iced coffee.

I ate one small scoop of the failed pot pie and it filled me up. I had one sip of this..

..before realizing I would rather run then finish it. We headed to the gym and I ran for 40 minutes, mostly an easy pace but I ran 3.02 miles! I barely made a dent in this glass at all. Sad..but true!

I had dessert afterwards, some yummy coconut cookie dough ice cream!

Nope, that probably equaled a scoop and a half! I’m a huge fan of using smaller plates and bowls! It’ll be one of my tricks for not overdoing it on Thanksgiving.

Another note, I realize I have been eating pretty heavy things. It’s important to remember balance this time of year. I plan on eating lighter the days before and after Thanksgiving to balance out the calorie overload that will be inevitable Thursday. I am just writing down this goal since writing it(especially on the blog) really helps me to follow through!

I love the way sugar transforms into a rich, silky caramel with nothing more than a pan and some heat. I melt the sugar until it turns golden brown. I then add a mixture of nuts that toast instantly from the heat of the sugar. I add a mixture of ground allspice and ancho chile. I then add the cream and a cloud forms and the sugar disappears. Moments later the cloud comes to a rest and the sugar re-appears as a silky, golden caramel sauce with a luscious combination of nuts all bathing in the sauce. The allspice is such a natural with the ice cream that the sauce is bound for. The ancho chile powder keeps you guessing and gives the sweet dessert the savory balance it needs. There is very little heat and the chile is not overwhelming. When the sauce hits the ice cream you understand the true meaning of holy matrimony! You now have an entirely new decadent sauce in the bottom of your bowl as the caramel sauce mixes with the melted ice cream. The nuts stay perched on top of the ice cream for a moment until they give in to the temptation to dive into the sauce.

I always need dessert at the end of a meal. Sometimes I buy a fancy dessert, sometimes I make a fancy dessert and sometimes I don’t have the time, money or energy for either. I created this late one night after a dinner party. Everyone was in the mood for something sweet but I had very little on hand. Sometimes the last-minute dishes are the best ones. Give it a try. Enjoy!

½ C. granulated sugar
¼ C. each of walnuts, green pumpkin seeds, peanuts and slivered almonds (you can use any form or combination of nuts that you have on hand or like).
½ tsp allspice
½ tsp ground ancho chile (or chile powder)
½ tsp salt
¾ C. heavy cream

Place the sugar in a medium size pot with a large surface area (you don’t want the sugar to be deep). Cook over medium heat. DO NOT touch or stir because it will potentially form crystals that will make the sauce seize up.
When the sugar starts to become golden you can swirl the pan gently. Once fully golden add the nuts, the spices and the salt. Allow the mixture to become a little darker than you think it should because the cream will lighten it up.
Pour in the cream and turn off the heat. Whisk to combine. Be careful, this stuff is really hot! Pour over ice cream. Resist doing shots of this even though you will be tempted!

I returned to the “real world” for a week and a half of normal eating.  I didn’t track my food at all.  While I tried to eat healthy and tried to resist temptation, I knew I wasn’t specifically following a strict diet that prohibited sweets and late night snacking….  So it basically meant I went back to skipping breakfasts and snacking on fruit, crackers, and nuts at night.  Oh, and one night with a big bag of baked potato chips.  And a friend’s birthday celebration that included 7 glasses of wine, two desserts, and at least 5000 calories of food.  

I’m actually kind of surprised and very relieved that, in this week and a half, I only regained the 2 pounds I lost from the Modified 3 Day Diet.  Unfortunately, my body fat percentage went up 1.4% points.  This is going by one of those scales with the weak electric currents, and I don’t really trust its accuracy.  But recognize our limitations and go with it.

So, in preparation for the upcoming diet buster known as Thanksgiving, I decided to use these last three days to go back on the 3 Day Diet.  According to WebMD, there are rumors (albeit unsubstantiated) of there being some sort of metabolic reaction from the food combination.  So this time round, I’m sticking to the menu plan exactly, and we’ll see if I can get closer to the promised 10 pound weight loss.

Quick thoughts from the day:

1. It is actually a burden to have to eat breakfast in the morning.  I’m always running out the door, and I’m not hungry anyway.  It seems like a waste of time and calories to force myself to eat.  Managed to eat most of the grapefruit half before running off to tennis.  And ate the toast and peanut butter after tennis on my way to school to help in Cayman’s class.  
2. One cup of ice cream is ALOT!  I gave myself two scoops of ice cream from a store-bought container of Haagen Dazs Vanilla ice cream.  Visually, it looked like a cup.  But it was probably only a quarter of the container, and aren’t those containers supposed to be a pint?  That means I could have had twice as much ice cream!  Well, they say people always underestimate the amount of food they are eating, so I decided to stick with my two scoops just to be on the safe side.
3. Any diet that lets you end the day with a cup of ice cream is a great diet in my book!

I’m not going to lie, this is my new favorite picture. My life in one frame, haha. The Brooklyn Bridge and ice cream. Yes, please.

Yesterday I finally, finally was able to check out the New Amsterdam Market, a monthly market in the South Street Seaport where the Fulton Fish Market used to be. It’s butchers and bakers, farms and wineries, cheese and chocolate – all kinds of things – all local or locally sourced. And it’s amazing. Aaaamazing. And there’s lots of samples for you to try.

You’ll never guess what kind of flavor that ice cream is. It’s sweet potato pecan. I was a little apprehensive at first, but once I tried it, I was sold, sold, sold. It was from The Bent Spoon, an ice cream shop from Princeton, New Jersey. It had honey-candied chocolate pecans in it. Hello. I might have to buy myself a pint of whatever flavors they bring to the next market.

Before I tried the ice cream, I got myself a small lobster roll from Luke’s Lobster, which I have been hearing soo many wonderful things about. At their booth, they had a little chalkboard that told you exactly where today’s catch was from (in Maine, by the way). Luke’s had the longest line, well-deserved. I only got the “snack” portion of the lobster roll, but it probably wouldn’t have killed me to get a whole one, $14 or not.

This lobster roll is hands-down the best thing I’ve had in a month (okay, maybe besides Gotham Bar & Grill). They have a place on E. 7th street that I am going to visit immediately.

'The Burden of the Burgeoning Belly', brought to you by the letter 'B'.

While munching on a salad last week, Michele’s gums began to bleed. For a brief moment I thought Michele’s teeth – due to calcium deficiencies caused by the pregnancy – had fallen out and I was about to cheer and do the Kumbayah.

As it turned out, it’s just a common side effect. I couldn’t do much myself, so apart from stopping to check on her I didn’t think too much about it.

Baby’s also beginning to be more aware of its surroundings. It kicks and punches back when prodded, it rolls around when Michele’s eating and it practically does star jumps when she eats ice cream. Baby must like ice cream.

I reckon Baby’s having lots of fun in there. It’s like living in a perpetual state of Zorb. Michele and I went to Rotorua, New Zealand for our honeymoon and had a memorable time rolling down the hill in a wet, bouncing ball for twenty seconds. It cost us $40/person. Try doing that for nine months. Damn, that’s one expensive ride!

Michele’s walk has also officially become a waddle. I like teasing the way she walks. Instead of aping her movements, I exaggerate the way I swing my hands when I walk. She doesn’t know it but I reckon she looks really cute with the waddle.

We are also a little over the ‘halfway’ point of our exciting journey. I can’t believe in another 20 (or so) weeks’ time, Baby will be in my arms, demanding ice cream, creature comforts and telling Toby it’s now the Number One Priority.

But let’s take it a week at a time. Long way to go Baby! Daddy can’t wait to see you but you would have to grow big and strong inside Mummy first!

So we have a problem.

1. My camera broke. Yup. Dropped it last night and now the lens is stuck halfway open and won’t budge.

2. I had pictures of my Saturday eats pre-camera dropping, but I left the memory card on my desk at school. And I’m now home.

So….that’s that. I’m sorry guys! What a slacker blogger I am! And I can’t tell you how upset I am about my camera. Here’s the picture my roommate captured post-dropping to prove it.

In the midst of crying right there as I cradle my baby and try to fiddle with the lens. No joke. Also please ignore the couple behind us getting mighty close back there.

I’ll probably head out to get a new camera sometime this week, but please bear with me while I go through this mourning period! Celeste (my camera’s name) gave me a good 4 years. She will be missed.

Then today (Sunday), I packed up, and hit the road home for Thanksgiving break. All of my classes were canceled on Monday and Tuesday

I’ve also heard so much about this pumpkin pie Blizzard at Dairy Queen lately. I knew there was one on my 3 1/2 hour drive home, so I planned to get one the trip. Unfortunately, they said they stopped selling them last month! What? Last time I checked, November definitely = pumpkin pie month. Bummed out, I settled for a Tagalong blizzard.

This was my first blizzard, and I have to say I was a little dissapointed. I actually only ate about 1/4-1/3 of it. It tasted bland, if that’s even at all possible? It needed fudge or peanut butter ripples throughout!

For those of you who have enjoyed Blizzards, what’s your favorite flavor that you recommend to a newbie for next time?

In home news – it was nice to come home to BBQ chicken (which I ate 2 full breasts of for dinner. Yes – it’s my favorite) and a working washing machine. Ahh the life

♥ The CBD Milkshakes

Lovely sweet bites shops are appearing around the office area. Firstly, it was the Glace that relocated to Icon Village, then it was the frigidarium (the gelato place) at market street. And now, we have Once Upon a Milkshake at Maxwell Chambers.

I had them sometime back, but i didn’t have my camera with me. This is my second visit, and it turned out better than before.

We were so tempted to order all the flavours! They have various ingenious names for the ice cream flavours / milkshakes like the cerious maple, which is definitely meant for the serious maple syrup lovers.

The shop is quirky, small and absolutely pretty. The combination of dark violet and grass green, alongside with the simple minimalist furnitures, makes the place a real cosy place to have your desserts. It’s a total contrast to the rest of the shops around Tanjong Pagar.

I’m a maple syrup lover and i absolutely have to try ‘cerious maple’  when i saw it on the menu.

This time round, we had the ice cream instead. It’s pretty common for ice cream to be paired up with caramel or butterscotch, but ice cream with maple syrup, that’s new!

Cerious Maple is definitely for the sweet tooth! I love this! The ice cream is smooth and tastes really good with the sweet maple syrup in it.  It would be better if there’s more of the crunch maple cereals though. But the taste of the maple syrup in my mouth tastes really good.

It is definitely one of the rare places to be found in CBD area.

For the drivers out there’s free parking coupon of $0.50 for every $10 spent between 11am – 10pm. Parking rates for the rest of the day could be found below as well.

Surely, the price of the milkshake might be a little bit pricey for some. $3.30 for a real mini milkshake. 

Well for me. I’m afraid i would have to give in to my sweet tooth and grab the ceriously maple ice cream and milkshakes! I simply love ♥ the taste of maple syrup ice cream and I would love to come back at night, to see how the place would look like with the use of candlelight.

My week has been quite amazing, quite a few meetings coming up this week .. I am currently eating some ice cream relaxed as I type this to you guys (kinda tired) I think im going to lay it down for some winks before bouncing to yalls new spot (it looks GREAT) its around that time of year people have to start realizing they need to be thankful. Me I praise all year and don’t let it out of rotation. .thank each of you and thank solem sleep, I am about to partake it .. check back when I wakeup and get at this again!

I survived! Yes! Yes I did! So happy that today is over! MAN! As expected, Shop Rite was mad ass crazy! like seriously! WOW! lol. Every register, also as expected, was open, and every cashier had a bagger. In fact, this is what I heard, every single cashier was working today. (hmmm….really? there was about several people I didn’t see there, wonder why is that? why should they have the day off when everyone else is working on probably the busiest day every?) Although, however, I wasn’t immediately rushed on a register. In fact, I was one of those baggers, for about 2 hours of bagging! UGH! I rather be doing bagshop (returns) or something, but bagging! come on! I suck at bagging, I am so slow at it! lol! if someone asks for paper and plastic, it takes me 5 minutes just to open the damn bag! lol (not really just exaggerating, but it does take me a few seconds to get the bag set up) Luckily time went by real quickly (THANK GOD!) one day down, 4 to go! AHHH! lol (hopefully Friday and Saturday won’t be to bad since it is after the holiday)

Other then that, my day was once again, just filled with excitement. Did a little hw before I left for work, and that’s pretty much it. Went to Friendly’s for dinner with dad after work, yeah….the typical Sunday stuff. LOL!

Trying to think of what else to put in this blog…but right now I am so frustrated I can’t even think! A number of things are really just driving me up the wall and I can’t get off my mind. I hate being frustrated, when I am frustrated I usually put away what is bothering me, therefore, ignoring the whole situation. I know that’s not the proper way of handling things, but I feel comfortable doing so. I have a lot of growing up to do, and god I hope this personal counselor thing works out because I have no idea what I am going to do next…where my life will lead me. idk.

Anyway….let’s move on…to something less deep and more, idk…..lol I can’t think of the word…less therapy describing? idk. haha lol!

Here is what I ate today:

BREAKFAST: A bowl of Speical K Protein Cereal

LUNCH: Some hearty Campbell’s Minestrone Soup! (mmmm! mmmm! good! possibilities! haha lmfao!)

SNACK: A Clif Kid Organic Z Bar Chocolate Chip bar

DINNER: At Friendly’s I got the usual, Oriental Chicken Salad! (and it was really good tonight, there was a lot of croutons, there were actually oranges in it this time, and lots of almonds! the best tonight!)

DESSERT: Can’t be at Friendly’s and not have dessert! that’s just unacceptable! lol. I had an M&M Friendz (and a plus, it had chocolate ice cream! yay!) lol.

LATE NIGHT SNACKS: A Jello Pudding and Stauffer’s Animal Crackers for some reason, when it really, really wasn’t necessary!

Well…that’s it for me. Weekend’s over (damn!) but then again it is a holiday week! (WHOO HOO!)

The home of Big Macs and Quarter Pounders definitely isn’t the first place you think of going for ice cream, but it’s the cheapest.  I’m not a huge fan of McDonald’s.  I probably have it once or twice a year, and that’s usually when stopping at a rest stop where there aren’t any better options.  One day this summer, though, I was driving by one of the many McDonald’s in my hometown, and I saw a sign advertising 39 cent ice cream cones! I just had to stop.

I love soft serve ice cream, especially on a hot summer day, so I went through the drive thru, and got my vanilla soft serve ice cream cone. Vanilla’s the only flavor they have, and they don’t have sugar cones, but I’m not complaining when I can have my favorite dessert for only 39 cents.

Supposedly, McDonald’s soft serve is “reduced fat” and only has 150 calories per cone.  Not bad at all. So as much as you may hate their greasy burgers and fried food, you can’t beat their deals when it comes “healthy”-ish ice cream cones.

I’m not sure if this was just a limited time offer, or if the cones are always 39 cents.  I’ll have to figure it out.  I know that McDonald’s changes their prices based on location, though.  For example, McDonald’s in a big city (like Boston) or at a rest stop or in an airport is always more expensive than just your average suburban store. So, in Boston, I’m assuming their cones are a little more pricey. Probably around $1.00. Still reasonable.

Where else can I get some really cheap ice cream?

also I ate at a restaurant that is specialized in chocolate!!!!!!(even though it took so long to find) The dish I ate had  the cutest display..

while W had this huge bowl of ice cream!!! it was too much for anybody to finish..

I LIKE THE SONG AND THE VIDEO ESPECIALLY THE HUUUGE ICE CREAM CONE AT THE END…

There was an emotional void, and it needed filling:

♦ Brittani’s romantic life has suffered some … setbacks … lately
♦ I hadn’t seen April in weeks
♦ We’d all been working too hard, and I for one have been far too much of a homebody lately

Solution?

A good old-fashioned Girls’ Night.

Whilst preparing to add the whipped cream topping: "Here, you stir, I'll get it ready ... Oh, get it? Because it's 'Reddi'-Wip!"

Brittani and I agreed that there are various must-haves for an authentic Girls Night:

♦ A happy, crowd-pleasing movie
♦ Unhealthy victuals
♦ Booze
♦ Nail polish

I searched valiantly for little umbrellas, but to no avail ... I did find neon bendy straws, however.

We purchased all the ingredients needed for spiked faux-Italian soda, and Brittani crafted delicious concoctions for us. I also found some blackberry cobbler ice cream … heaven on earth.

Heaven. on. earth.

We lamented the lack of Pretty Princesses or Mall Madness – it would have completed the joyous archetype, but unfortunately/fortunately, none of us owned either.

We were quickly hungry, but as April started to put the pizza in the oven, Brittani stopped her in horror.

“You can’t put it in like that!” she said, aghast. She quickly started re-arranging the pepperoni slices haphazardly bunched in the middle of the pizza. “It has to be modular!”

After rampant giggling thwarted her first two attempts, Brittani coached herself, saying "Focus .... FOCUS ... " as her legs slowly rose into the air.

While we waited for the pizza and fries to bake, we started painting our nails.

Apart from an indistinguishable shade of light pink for my sister’s wedding two winters ago, I hadn’t painted my nails since I was maybe 16. Not surprisingly, I ended up begging April to help … and so did Brittani.

April was our lifesaver -- she only painted her toenails, and so as we waited for our fingernails to dry, she patiently performed any task we couldn't ourselves ... even fastening my belt for me after I used the bathroom.

(Photo by Brittani) I'm actually really digging my nails. It was distracting at first, but I'm enjoying the "girliness" of it. It's a fun change of pace to have something so frilly.

As for the movie, we went with a tried-and-true feelgood classic.
